Hi to all members, I do hope all well and coping with the present lock-down requirements. It is quite frustrating to go to the shed, look at your vehicle, maybe start up, warm up and shut

down with possibly limited upgrades you can carry out on your Special Vehicle, and all the time in the world to do it!! Hopefully early May we could see a limited number of restrictions lifted?

An update on a very positive fighter in Chris O’Hara, who had his right leg amputated below the knee and is recovering in Nathalia’s aged care centre, not only from the loss of his leg but a broken arm, the result of a fall in GV Hospital. Chris, on behalf of all Committee and Members we are thinking of you, wishing you all the very best – keep smiling mate.

Due to the complete halt to Club activities, I have limited news unfortunately, but please if any club member has a story, a restoration or pertinent information of interest to other club members, email or send to Brendan Walsh for our Journal. Thank you.

I am in the early planning stages of a Running Board Rally scheduled for ???? We are still hopeful of our Swap Meet, Rally of the Valley and 50th Anniversary celebrations

may go ahead ?? Really, we do not know of course yet. Emails will go out to members with updates when applicable, in addition to the monthly Drivers Journal.

To all members, please keep positive, healthy, happy and when legally possible we will be back on the road with our special vehicles.

Cheers for now. Kind regards,

Neil Rutherford

Another month with no Club events and it’s still hard to take. I’ve spent a lot of time in the shed organising my workshop (see page 12) but I’d still love to go for a drive in an old car!

I hope you’ve worked out some ways to keep yourself busy and your mind occupied. There are a few restoration updates in this Journal, so some other members are spending time in their sheds as well! Thanks to the members who sent those in – hopefully we’ll have some more next month.

Other clubs are working out different ways to keep their members occupied. Hughie sent me an email he’d received from the Chrysler Club asking members to go on a scavenger hunt. They had to find 10 items and then photograph them. The most imaginative photo won a prize. Have you got any ideas for us?!

Fred Williams sent me a link to an article about British car myths. It was actually written by an American who had owned quite a few British cars, and he agreed with some of the myths but not others. It’s at www.mossmotoring.com/british-car-myths/

Hopefully we’ll be back to just the normal car-owner-virus before too long! Brendan Walsh

After the February meeting when the Club decided to donate $5000 to Blaze Aid, Dennis and I decided we would volunteer with BlazeAid. We went to Kingston S E in South Australia. We spent 10 days there and Dennis went fencing each day and I spent my time in the kitchen helping prepare the meals, starting at 5:30am each morning.

We found volunteering with Blaze Aid a very rewarding experience. Attached is an update from the farm Dennis worked on.

Thanks, Helen and Dennis Paul

BlazeAid

Dear Dennis,

This is Rebecca McBride from Keilira Station near Kingston. I apologise that it has taken me so long to send through an update on the farm. BlazeAid are due to finish up soon so we have been very busy getting jobs done. I hope you are well and keeping safe in these strange times. Below is a quick update from Keilira but please let me know if you would like any other information.

On Keilira Station we lost about 60km of fence, 40% of our paddocks and pastures, along with about 100 cattle and 600 sheep. With the amazing help from BlazeAid, over the last 3 months we cleared all of the burnt fences and have so far rebuilt almost half (26km), most importantly this includes making our boundary secure again. The volunteers have undertaken all sorts of different jobs including: - taking droppers and wires off burnt posts - rolling up wire by hand and with a tractor - pulling out burnt posts with a tractor, cleaning out post holes and replacing with new posts - using a tractor and truck to collect and dump all of the rubbish - stapling new wires and tying droppers onto new fences (With an average of 1 post and 4 droppers every 15 metres on an 8 wire fence, our volunteers have hammered in 13900 staples and tied on 7000 droppers using 56000 clips!) - swinging gates Across the nine farms BlazeAid have cleared and replaced nearly 200km of fence.

We have received some good rain in the last few weeks (it is actually raining as I write this email!) and having the fences rebuilt means we can get our livestock back on to the pastures that are regrowing quickly since the fire. We are so grateful to you, all of the volunteers and everyone who fundraised and donated goods for making the tough job of rebuilding much faster and more enjoyable! It is easy to measure achievements in kilometres of fence but harder to measure the impact of friendly faces and an extra set of hands on the morale of local farmers facing the task of recovering from a bush fire. I think they are equally important and beneficial.

Thank you again and hopefully we can all get through COVID19 safely and everyone can come back sometime to check on progress.

Best regards Bec

Chrysler Restorers Club of Australia Annual Tour, Shepparton 6th-9th March 2020

As reported by Hughie in last month’s Journal, the Chrysler Club - Victorian Branch - held their annual rally in Shepparton over the March Labour Day long weekend. Their letter of thanks is copied here.

Annual Rally “Central West NSW” – 15th-29th April 2020

Here is a brief account of the Central West Rally.

Well, one thing was for sure, everyone was keen to go on the rally, however you could say the start of the rally was, well, a bit of a non-event really.

The first day went off without a hitch, no problems of any kind, a little bit boring to be honest. Day 2, well, it actually was a bit of a non-event as well. Again there were no problems encountered or any excitement to be had by any one of us. And so it went on, day after day, then the first week turned into the second week and then it was over, almost like the rally never happened.

Look, don’t get me wrong, our rally may well have been a bit of a non-event but there were a few pluses. Firstly, I could not believe how much fuel the Galaxie did not use, and you know, it’s generally quite thirsty. Other rally participants also reported very low fuel usage. There were no vehicle breakdowns or any mechanical trouble of any sort, no issues with our accommodation or meals either.

And poor old Bob from Deniliquin, I really do feel sorry for him as he has nothing, at all, to complain about.

1934 CHRYSLER Series CB Six convertible sedan – Ken Muston

Ken has been working on this Chrysler for about seven years and hopes to have it finished within the next year or two.

It’s a very rare car, being right hand drive originally. Unfortunately, a lot of the manufacturing records were lost in a fire.

As the factory build sheet was lost, it has been painted in an appropriate colour scheme selected by Ken.

The engine has been run in on the dyno with no oil leaks! It is hoped to have a short test drive sometime soon.

1964 MORRIS Mini 850 – Callum Walsh

Cal’s Mini got its first Club Permit just in time to be the bridal car at a family wedding on February 29th.

It’s been fully restored underneath, but the body and interior are basically original and untouched.

1971 HONDA 1300 coupe 9 – Ian Wright You might remember Ian’s silver Honda coupe at our

Christmas break-up in 2013 .

He’s working on another one and is fitting a rebuilt engine from the red coupe (bought in Tasmania) into the yellow body (bought in Canberra).

These cars are unusual in that the engine, drive shafts, lower suspension arms and rack and pinion steering are all mounted on the sub-frame . The car body is then lowered onto this subframe.

1928 SUNBEAM 20.9 saloon – Phil Podbury

“Time to Play” G.V.M.V.D.C.Inc. Permit Plate Inspection Day; 1928 Sunbeam 20.9 rolls over the pit, eager eyes and

hands check this, pull that; at the end of the pit, vehicle is jacked up by the front axle using a trolley jack, crowbar placed under nearside (n/s) tyre (21inch wheel)…. bearings ok, but, what’s this? 1/8’’ play (approx) king pin or worn bush…..not sure. Remedy! Replace or repair? “In the meantime, add a little more grease!”

Over the last few weeks myself and half the Australian population have spent more time on home territory due to COVID-19, leaving people like me with “time to play”, with the result that the n/s “King Pin” now resides in a new “Bronze Bush”(Top), “Thanks to a very skilful machinist” (Club Member).

1953 Austin A40 Somerset – David Grant

David bought his Austin in 2014 after retiring from the orchard. His wife Lea suggested he might need a project and perhaps restoring an old car would be good.

The car had been rusting away in a shed in Numurkah for about 25 years and needed plenty of work. Rats had done a lot of damage to the interior and the wiring loom, but the body was in reasonable condition.

David has spent many hours dismantling, cleaning, removing old paint and priming parts and panels ready for them to be professionally finished.

The car is called “Penny” after a 1954 penny was found in a rear door pocket.

Work is proceeding well, with the engine running for the first time late last month.

Instrument workshop – Brendan Walsh After a couple of years as an “apprentice” to master instrument repairer/restorer Denis Burr, I have

now shifted all the specialised equipment to my own workshop. Lucky for me, he’ll still be just around the corner if I get a problem I can’t handle!

May 2020

Page 13

The resurrection of a Triumph TR6 – Peter Vibert

Background The car was imported from USA in 2007. It had passed through

two or three sets of hands before I found it sitting in the open at Highland Valley in the hills near Adelaide in December 2016. Sills and “B” pillars had rusted badly but replacement components had been previously purchased and came with the car. Brake callipers, discs, shoes and cylinders were missing.

Preliminary Engine Test First job was to check out the engine before dismantling the car for its restoration. Twin Stromberg

carburettors were jammed solid with goo and gunk. After stripping them down and fitting overhaul kits they were fitted back onto the engine. Will it turn over? “Yes”! Will it start? “Yes”, on about the second revolution. Once it had spat out all the accumulated stuff it proved to be ok to use with a lot of TLC needed on all visible components, generator, distributor, radiator, starter and so on. The engine can now be removed.

Right Hand Drive Conversion. This was done before dismantling the car so that each

side of the scuttle and firewall could be made good at the same time that other body repairs were carried out later. Graeme Smith came up with a RH Drive steering rack which replaced the American one. Dashboard backing was cut up and welded into RH drive configuration. A new mirror image dashboard was made and veneered with New Guinea Walnut Veneer. Pedal box, accelerator linkage, brake booster and master cylinders, were attached through new penetrations on the RH side as was the steering column.

Body WorksNow it was time to remove the mudguards, bonnet, boot lid

and doors which had all their innards removed at the same time. Next, the body came off the chassis and along with the panels it was taken to Ryan at Shepparton Soda Blasters in Keppel St for bare metal paint removal. Then back to Mick Doherty’s panel works for an undercoat and for John Truman’s son Michael to work his magic replacing

panels and repairing rust. Mick and his daughter Brook then set about painting all components Mallard Green which is the original colour.

Chassis While all this was going on the chassis was stripped of every

component and taken to Oinka on Watt Road for sandblasting. This showed up significant rust damage which was carefully treated, and all damaged areas were repaired and returned to pristine condition.

Restoration Update

May 2020

Page 14

Chassis reassemblyIndependent Rear end

The differential tested OK so after replacing the seals it was reattached to the chassis. Driveshafts received new universals and bearings. Shockers and springs were replaced with new ones as were the brake shoes, cylinders and brake lines.

Front end All bushes, springs, shockers and tie rod ends were replaced and

Graeme Smith’s RH rack (now overhauled) was fitted. New callipers, discs and pads were fitted also.

Wheels 8-spoke Minitor (minilite look) alloy wheels replaced the steel wheels and new tyres were fitted.

Engine and transmission. The car came without overdrive. Ray Mullins put

me on to Bob Byham in Mt Gambier who came up with a suitable overdrive gearbox and overdrive. Both were in poor condition so each received a meticulous rebuild. After fitting a new clutch and thrust race, this was attached to the engine and mounted, on new mounts, to the chassis. The repaired radiator and repaired petrol tank were refitted at this time also.

Carburettors The incredibly complex American model Strombergs proved impossible to tune so a pair of earlier

Strombergs were fitted and with the help of Ray Manson at Ray’s Automotive the problem was solved.

Wiring While the body was away, I set up a big

table on which I mounted the dashboard and fitted the instruments, now repaired by Howard Instruments in Heidelberg. I then set about unpicking the old wiring loom so I could replace and extend wiring to reach the new RH drive locations of everything. At this time, I added wiring for cruise control, central remote locking, outside thermometer, Bluetooth radio, headlights left-on beeper, appropriate relays and so on. All these required an update to the fusing so 6 terminal “always on” and “Ignition on” fuse blocks were fitted.

Lighting Red indicator lights were changed to amber. Amber parkers were changed to white and American

headlights were replaced with RH drive ones.

May 2020

Page 15

Interior The interior had completely wasted away leaving pretty

much only a couple of rusty seat frames. These were duly brought back to life. New seat padding

and covers saw them looking good again in the original “new tan” colour. Door cards, lining and carpets, also in original colour, were purchased and fitted.

HoodA factory reproduction mohair hood in

beige will keep the rain out and will look good against the Mallard Green body.

Various Alternator and starter were checked out by Rod Wild. Water pump was replaced as was the timing

chain and front crankshaft seal. Front and back bumpers were re-chromed by Albury Electroplaters. All rubbers are new. Brake booster and slave cylinders were repaired or re-sleeved by ABS in Watson St.

Parts acquisition Rimmer Bros in UK were

able to supply every item needed. Prices are fair and delivery takes as little as 4 days. Pay Pal proved to be a convenient way of payment.

OK now. What next? Any suggestions?

Happy Motoring Peter Vibert

1939 Ford 10 Restoration – Barry Knight

I would think that nearly all of our readers would know Barry Knight from Shepparton.

Barry purchased the 1939 Ford 10 around 1974 from Mitch Harper, who at that time lived in Shepparton. The Ford 10 had been parked beside Mitch’s parents’ house for something like seven years. Mitch was a school teacher and he had used the Ford to travel to Melbourne to University before it was parked.

Barry took some new fuel and a battery, and the four-cylinder side valve Ford engine fired up on the third attempt. The Ford was driven onto the trailer and taken back to Barry’s home where he proceeded to strip the car for a full restoration in his spare time. Mitch told Barry that he thought that the engine had only been recently rebuilt before it was parked, and when the engine was stripped it was found to be in perfect condition. The carburettor did give some trouble, until Barry managed to purchase a new old stock item from the retiring Ford Dealer in Nathalia for the princely sum of $15.

The bodywork was the subject of a bare metal respray in Barry’s back yard. It was resprayed in the original colour of pale yellow. Some of the photos show it as white, but as is the case with a lot of photographs from that era, the true colour has faded. Enamel was used as it was the paint of choice at that particular time for vehicles of this age. The black mudguards were painted in “Killrust” thinned with petrol.

The electrics were converted to 12 volt, from the original 6 volt. This worked out well, until the extra load on the starter motor made it detonate and break a section off the gearbox. Thanks to Les Smith, this damage was repaired by careful welding of a suitably bent steel rod and further careful grinding.

The restoration took about twelve months and Barry was ably assisted by Les Smith, Lou Corbett, and Steve Merton, just to mention a few. When registered, the number was CH 0111. The only down side was that the original upholsterer chosen, failed to complete, or even start, the job in a lengthy period of time, so Barry reclaimed all the items and was forced to take the Ford on its maiden trip with blankets over the seats. Upon return from that first trip, Les Smith offered to do the job, and after only four days the entire interior, including door trims and carpets was completed. Barry couldn’t quite believe it! Les had done an excellent job.

The Ford then performed sterling service on numerous Car Club adventures. The Bendigo Easter parade was a regular attraction for Barry, his family and other members of the then Goulburn Valley Motor Vehicle Collectors Club, as it was then called.

The Ford had a top speed of 45 mph and a cruising speed of 45 mph. The gearbox was a three speed on the floor with synchromesh on second and third. It had four-wheel mechanical brakes but apparently it stopped OK – well sort of! The cooling system was thermo-siphon, as in no water pump. It was only very basic, but it never overheated. It was even used to tow a small trailer on some of the adventures.

The time came around 1991 when the Ford was sold to a gent in Melbourne. To the best of Barry’s knowledge, the same gent still owns the car.

Can anyone in the club help me with information about club member No 97, the late, Mr Henry Helsham Wheeler, of Euroa.

Henry was a Club member in 1973, I am reliably informed. During my research and general interest in things Rolls-Royce I came across his name. I then discovered he was the service agent for Mitchell’s Hire Cars of Alexandra who operated a fleet of R-R cars. If anyone who knew, or knew of, Henry and can help with information or photographs of him or his cars that would assist me in my research I would be most grateful.

I have been asked to identify the cars shown in the photos below. They were apparently from the Murtoa area. If you’ve got some thoughts, please send them to me. Thanks.
