In India, 5 September is celebrated as Teachers’ Day to mark the contributions made by teachers to the society. The day also coincides with the birthday of a great teacher Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, who was a staunch believer of education, and was a well-known diplomat, scholar, President of India and above all a great teacher. In 1962, when he became the President of India, he was approached by his followers to celebrate his birthday on 5 September. Instead, he asked them to celebrate this day as Teachers’ Day.
