A WAY TO SAVE IN 2016

Since 1998 the Chamber has been helping members save on their Labor & Industries for Worker’s Compensation. The program is called Retrospective Rating. It is a State program that help’s employer’s save on premiums paid to L & I. Through the Chamber, one can receive possi-ble refunds on those premiums paid as a group.

The Chamber has three groups. Maybe your business fit’s one of them?

MANUFACTURING 3 MILLION IN PREMIUMSThis is a group that has been together for 17 years. Those members average refund comes in at 44%. The majority of the members average rates are 20 to 30 percent lower than industry average. Additionally, they receive the annual claims free discount of 10%

RETAIL AND PROFESSIONAL SERVICES 1.1 MIL-LION IN PREMIUMS.In 2005 this group came together to help em-ployers in the Retail / Professional Service risk class. It encompass a larger sector of employ-ers not specific to a major industry. This group’s average refunds come in at 30%. Plus receiving the annual claims free discount of 10%.

HEALTHCARE 1.5 MILLION IN PREMIUMS This is our newest group formed in October 2015. This includes members from Vancouver up to Thurston County. It is a joint effort from your GVCC and the Thurston County Chambers. If you are in any type of medical field, see if you qualify for this group. The group has total of 67 members comprising of medical clinic, dentist ,medical suppliers and Hospitals. This group will receive it’s first refund in 2017.

The Small Business As-sistance Program (SBAP) is close to our goal of serving 30 low-to-mid income level small busi-nesses and/or start-ups in Vancouver.

We need your help to reach our goal! Do you know anyone who is trying to, or has started a business? Could they benefit from one-on-one business counsel-ing? Once an applicant has met the require-ments they would meet weekly or bi-weekly for tailored help. The first session will determine business goals and/or areas of focus. Assis-tance in time manage-ment, budgeting/fi-nance, human resources, marketing/outreach and city/county/state regula-tions are among our top requests. The SBAP has over 25 business sup-port partners and often clients are directed to existing resources in addition to their SBAP sessions.

In September the GVCC hosted it’s Annual “Officer Installation and Business & Leadership Awards” Event at the Hilton.

Over 300 attendees joined the Chamber to honor our outgoing chairman of the Board: Eric Sawyer of BBSI and welcome the new 2015-2016 Chairman: Eric Olmsted of On Line Sup-port, Inc.

The GVCC also awarded our first ever “Small Busi-ness Assistance Program” scholarship to Kendra Jones of Tailored Beauty.

The GVCC also honored five award recipients for the 2015 “Business & Leader-ship Award” program. • Annette Cleveland was

our Statesman of the Year Award recipient

• Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt was our “Busi-ness of the Year” (Small Category)

• Columbia Credit Union was our “Business of the Year” (Large Cat-egory)

• Trek Global was our 2015 Start up to Watch.

• Scott Campbell of Waste Connections was our Community Cham-pion.

The final activity of the night was a 300 balloon “DROP” and Shannon Decker from Columbian Credit Union won the $500 cash prize!

Our thanks to our present-ing sponsor the Port of Van-couver USA.

Chamber Events & Opportunities

There’s more than one way to net-work at GVCC.

This fall we’ve launched a new industry focused platform pro-viding you the best access to the people who can help you grow your business.

Thanks to Vantechy friends, our digital technology companies and our sponsor CheQitout for pulling together a great crowd in October for our first Industry Quarterly event.

The idea is simple: Pick an industry and create a networking cluster where ev-eryone in the room is connected to the industry and uniquely positioned to help one connect and build their network. We invite the digital company CEO, the ven-dors who provide a unique service to the company, the policy makers in city hall, and the statehouse who can help support the growing industry. We always place a premium on the value of face-to-face conversations

A New Way to NetworkA Message from the GVCC CEO

because we know you like do-ing business with people you know.

For new chamber mem-bers, service providers and

up-and-coming business leaders, we have our bi-week-ly Leads and Needs event. Thanks to our friends at Beaches for hosting the first and third Wednesday of each month at 7:30am. It’s a great way to be seen, introduce

yourself and gather a handful of new con-tacts or as we call them, new friends.

For our entire chamber community, the monthly “Business After Hours” events provide the best networking in SW Wash-ington. It’s where you’ll meet your fellow business leaders, the newest companies and potential clients. November’s BAH

is at Glenwood Place – November 17th - It’s an annual feast not to be missed. On December 15th we’ll gather at DeWil’s. Host Tracy and Lynda Wilson have a great evening in store.

Networking can be as casual or as strategic as you make it. I encourage you to check out our newest approach.

Our next Industry Quarterly is Thursday, January 7th hosted by Regence BlueCross BlueShield and our focus is on Health Care. It’s a great opportunity to meet the people who are shaping our health care industry in Vancouver: our hospitals, clin-ics, providers, vendors, insurance groups, policy makers and yes, you!

Your Chamber This Month It’s the season for cele-brating with family and friends – but before you head to the mall or the big chains to buy gifts, food or entertainment, consider shopping at local, independent busi-nesses. Shoppers play an integral role in help-ing small businesses thrive and your choice makes a difference.

Strengthen your communityExperts say small businesses help drive job creation and promote economic growth. By shopping or dining at small businesses, you’re supporting the small businesses in your city and strengthening your local community.

At Columbia Credit Union, Making Life Better is our core value, and we believe a successful com-munity starts with ensuring the well-being of our residents and local businesses. That’s why we support charitable causes, provide financial edu-cational opportunities and connect businesses with the products and services they need to run smoothly and stay competitive.

According to BuyVancouverUSA.org, a recent study showed that every $100 spent at local in-dependent businesses generates $45 of second-ary local spending, versus just $14 at a big box chain. On average, three times as much of each dollar spent at local independent stores recircu-lates in the local economy compared to funds spent at chain-owned businesses. Experts call this the multiplier effect.

In addition to increased local spending, the American Independent Business Alliance (amiba.net) identifies a slew of benefits to shopping lo-cal:

• Builds community• Strengthens the local economy• Shapes our community’s character• Creates a healthier environment• Lower taxes• Gives back to the community• Increases wealth of residents• Enhances local democracy• Enhances health of residents

So instead of fighting the crowds at the mall, Columbia Credit Union invites you to join us in Making Life Better by shopping at local, inde-pendent businesses this holiday season. Your participation helps bring us closer to the best gift of all: a strong community and a successful local economy!

GVCC Launches new “Digital TEchnology Expo & Luncheon”

GOAL: To increase knowledge and

demonstrate applications of

emerging technologies to

benefit business.

On Thursday, April 28th the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, along with community partners will host our region’s first ever “Digital Technology Expo & Luncheon!” This one-day event will consist of five parts: a multi zone technology expo directed at business application, a live-ly demonstration stage, an education preview, a dynamic digital technology luncheon and, fi-nally a “Nonprofit & Technology Happy Hour!”

This event will be unparalleled in our region and com-bines the strength of the City’s Inno-vation Partnership Zone (IPZ) in Digital Technology, WSU-Vancouver’s Cre-ative Media & Digi-tal Culture Program, the CREDC and a number of other community partners.

This will be the premier venue for experiencing new tech-nologies, fueling the creative fire of students and increas-ing the community’s general knowledge and application of digital technologies.

The “Digital Technology Expo” will kick off with a dedicated “Educational Preview” with students from the Vancouver,

The Digital Technology Expo & Luncheon is presented by:

New Programming

Evergreen and Camas School Districts attending. This is a perfect opportunity for businesses and sponsors to have face-to-face time with our youth interested in the Digital Technology field. Exhibitors are encouraged to challenged and engage the students. This is an opportunity for the

Digital Technology In-dustry to spark the creative fire of our youth, their potential workforce, and to talk with instructors from WSU-Van, Clark and three local school dis-tricts: Vancouver, Ever-green and Camas.

The Digital Technology expo will then open to the public, as small businesses are the tar-get market. Vendors are encouraged to dis-play their small busi-ness solutions with the goal of attracting local

businesses as customers in the following zones: Online Presence, Mobile, IT Support, and Business Software Solu-tions.

We’ll host a “Digital Technology Luncheon” presented by Riverview Community Bank from 12-1:30 pm with a panel discussion on how our local sports teams: The Timbers, The Hops and The Trail Blazers are leveraging technology to en-gage their fanbases.

NONPROFITS:Five Tips for Getting GrantsIs your organization ready to apply?

Column by Gayle PalmerClark College Economic and Community Development

For nonprofit organizations

of any size getting grants can be a wel-come boost to your organization’s bot-tom line. Grants can fund special projects to accomplish strategic goals or they can help fund actions that improve nonprofit effectiveness. Whatever your reason to seek grant funds, you organization will be more successful if you prepare for a grant writing campaign. Here are some tips to help prepare the organization to apply to foundations for grants.

1. Get your legal and financial docu-ments in order. Work with your program staff to be sure your orga-nization’s information is up to date and relevant. Have in place these important financial and legal docu-ments:

• Verification of tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code;

• List of current board mem-

Upgrading to energy-efficient systems can save you money. Energy Trust of Oregon has the expertise and a network of specially trained contractors to get the job done—and our cash incentives help make it affordable.

bers (include member af-filiations and basic contact information); • Most recent IRS Form 990 (if available);• Organization’s current year operating budget.2. A single page state-

ment clearly states the problem you are addressing and how you plan to solve it.

3. One or two compelling, but brief stories that illustrate how your strat-egy has made a difference to your community.

4. An outline of your workplan that shows how your proposal that matches the funders’ requirements.

5. A project budget document that makes sense with notes that explain how you arrived at the costs.

When you begin with a plan for grant writing, you are able to answer the ques-tions required by funding sources and foundations. Grants should be part of long-term strategic funding plan that prepares your nonprofit to provide the compelling arguments that foundations and public funding agencies want in a grant application.

The “Holiday Heroes” Luncheon event is a time to showcase the GVCC’s Am-bassador team and their year of ser-vice in 2015. It’s also a time when the Chamber shines a light on one of our nonprofit members. This year we’ve chosen the Assistance League and their “JUST Because...” program which stocks the Foster Closet at DSHS. Of-ten, when a child is placed in foster care they leave with only the clothes on their back. This clothing drive fo-cuses on new and teen sized jeans, underwear, socks and t-shirts: J.U.S.T.!

The GVCC’s Holiday Luncheon is also the MEGA holiday office party of the season! We’ll have the Columbia Adventist Academy Handbell Choir, a delicious seasonal lunch, and gift

baskets galore!

Also, have your holiday wish list ready, Santa will be making an appearance, with a dedicat-ed photobooth area and keep-sake picture for you to take home.

Bring new and teen sized Jeans, Underwear, Socks and Tees to event!

Local Nonprofits Need Business SupportSpotlight: Share, Children’s Center, Meals on Wheels & Hough Foundation

SHARE For some Clark County families, hardship and struggle are not just words – they are the reality of their daily lives. The holiday season only adds to the stress for these families. Share’s Adopt-a-Family and Giving Tree pro-grams, the signature aspects of our Holi-day Cheer Program, are an opportunity for individuals, companies and organiza-tions to help families and individuals dur-ing the holidays by providing clothing, toys, household items and more. In 2014, more than 30 organizations established giving trees and 86 organizations/people adopted families. The needs of low-income families are expected to increase this year – and your business can be the difference between a joyous or somber holiday for a family in need.

Both programs are simple. When adopt-ing a family, you will receive a list of gift items requested by the family, you purchase the items and deliver them

to Share. Donation receipt forms helps us track the gifts and number of items to ensure all items are received by the families.

A Giving tree can be hosted at your business, club or church to collect gifts. Share provides hang-able gift tags and suggested items for different age groups. You can display the tags as ornaments on your Giving Tree in a common space or do something new and creative with them that inspires the holiday spirit. Or you can simply encourage guests at your holiday party to bring gifts to donate to Share.

Donations to the either program are tax-deductible. To adopt-a-family, please contact Hilary Torres at 360-952-8229 or [email protected]. For Giving Tree tags, please contact Becky Morgan at 360-952-8223 or [email protected].

CHILDREN’S CENTERThe Children’s Center is conducting two drives which businesses can take part in. 1.) A Food Drive that runs to the end of October (will take food after that date). 2.) A Holiday Toy Drive that runs to December 14. The Children’s Center is seeing more children and teens than ever in need. Approximately 95% of whom live in low income families. Contact the Children’s Center with questions at (360) 699-2244.

Executive Director Vancouver’s Downtown

Association

Our vibrant down-town is made up of many different segments. We bank here, dine here, invest here, live here, recreate here, educate here and make our lives in many ways here. And, when everything is working at its best…those segments intersect to create a community. Downtown is the heart of our community. And, it is both a practical and a poetic truth that those organi-zations with a huge heart for creat-ing change for all in various ways are making a wonderful difference in our downtown. VDA would like to thank all of those community-building or-ganizations who have offices here, schedule meetings here, and who raise dollars for their efforts through their retail projects. We thank those of you who have purchased property here. Their investments are a sign of our good health. We thank all of them who connect with each other to build a stronger base. Communi-ties who fuse well become stronger. Networks….well…they work! Downtown events that are sponsored by nonprofits are a huge boost to our city center. Thank you to those who invite us all to enjoy concerts, walk our dogs, sample beer and wine, run/walk for a cause, and come together to discuss important issues. Thank you for those who sponsor auctions, sell roses and strawberries, put us in ‘jail’ so that our friends can bail us out. Thank you to the nonprofits, the people they love, and those who love them back. Your work is life affirming. And, you have added a lot of life to the heart of our city. Vancouver’s Downtown As-sociation is also a nonprofit. Our work is focused on the central core of our community. You can learn more about us at www.vdausa.org Our office is at 811 Main Street. Nonprofits, Essential to Downtown

of income. Want to become involved this holiday season? Here are some ideas: De-liver meals on Thanksgiving or Christmas – great way to get your kids involved! You can volunteer for a two-hour shift during Donate Dinner, Nov. 21-25, at independent grocers in the Vancouver area. Visit www.donatedinner.org for de-tails. Also, you can create holiday greet-ing cards for homebound seniors. there is an opportunity on Dec. 19th to assemble holiday boxes. Please consider giving a gift to a lonely, homebound senior like: warm socks, blankets, writing paper, postage stamps and novels are all great ideas for gifts.

Need more information? Visit our web-site at www.mealsonwheelspeople.org or call Mike Buck at 503.953.8101.

HOUGHFOUNDATION During Thanksgiving the Hough Foundation creates full Thanksgiving meal boxes to those in need. Recipients sign up or

are referred by a teacher, counselor, or principal. These meals come with all the fixings for a Thanksgiving meal and a gift card for $15 for Winco to get the perish-ables. 75 were distributed last year, and they expect a larger number of requests due to working with ESD112 this year. The foundation will start gathering for Thanksgiving boxes this November. The Hough Foundation also distributes food boxes for Christmas. The Foundation is asking for donors to provide gifts for families, including teens, items for food boxes, gift cards or Winco gift cards for food would be a perfect fit. For questions reach out to Jill Campbell at [email protected].

BE A SANTA TO A SENIOR! Businesses are invited to host a purple tree with gift tags for local seniors. This could be the only gift this senior receives. Requests range from clothing, lotions, chocolates and books. Contact Dianna for more: [email protected].

It’s tempting to tune out the po-litical noise that we’re subjected to on a daily ba-sis. At the public affairs commit-tee our goal is to focus on the issues that mat-ter most to our businesses and our community

AND work on issues where we can have an impact. This fall, we’ve encouraged our local candidates to come in and meet us. The Chamber doesn’t endorse candi-dates but we want to be informed vot-ers and we want our elected officials to know us,our issues and our priori-ties. At the Chamber we want you to have open and easy access to your elected officials. Whether it’s local street funding issues, regional plan-ning issues, legislative priorities, or deciding how to use YOUR tax dollars, your perspective matters.

On December 11th we’ll invite you to meet your state legislators at our Legislative Outlook Breakfast at the Hilton Vancouver. We will also en-courage you to come because of the other elected officials you’ll meet at the event during networking: your port commissioners, city and county councilors, your utility commissioners

WHY Business Advocacy matters

Final Thought

and school board members. By pro-viding access, we help build relation-ships between businesses and elected officials. Here’s an example of why ac-cess matters:

When the City of Vancouver proposed a new street funding tax that would impact business, the city came to the Chamber for input. We encouraged the city to reach out to businesses through a series of surveys. Several of our businesses volunteered to review their proposal at length. Our busi-nesses made several suggestions to help offset some of the cost to busi-ness. Our businesses found value in the city’s proposal to fix streets us-ing a combination of user fees. The city and the Chamber found middle ground to move forward with neces-sary investments. Our discussions will be ongoing as the Chamber monitors the workplan to ensure that our tax-payer dollars are being used prudent-ly. We have good lines of communi-cation open so that when there is an issue, you have access to your elected officials who are listening to the busi-ness point of view.

Access matters because it fosters a business friendly relationship with the people who have authority to set taxes and policies that impact our business community. We’re here to provide that access.
