College Statement and Statistics

Guttman Community College

President Scott Evenbeck

The Stella and Charles Guttman Community College at CUNY opened with its inaugural class of 300 studentsin August 2012 at 50 W. 40th St. in Midtown Manhattan, an extraordinary location overlooking scenic BryantPark. It is the first new community college the University has established in more than four decades, and it isCUNY's second community college in Manhattan. In accordance with CUNY's Master Plan, GuttmanCommunity College, which has an unwavering commitment to educate students from all backgrounds, willserve an ever-increasing, ever more diverse population of New Yorkers.

Guttman Community College is committed to rethinking associate-degree education in an environment thatnurtures student success. Based on extensive research, it integrates excellence in teaching, pro-active and responsive student supports and community partnerships. The primary objective is to increase the number ofstudents, especially those not effectively served in higher education, who persist in their programs of study and attain a degree in a timely manner. Guttman Community College offers a clearly defined educational pathwaybeginning with a required summer bridge program and continuing through a first-year integrated corecurriculum with inquiry-based projects related to issues relevant to New York City. The college offers fiveacademically rigorous, multidisciplinary and experientially based majors that prepare students for careers andbaccalaureate study: Business Administration (AA), Human Services (AA), Information Technology (AAS),Liberal Arts & Science (AA) and Urban Studies (AA).

Community is at the center of Guttman Community College's mission, and students are at the center of thecollege. The college fosters an environment of cooperation and collaboration, where students, faculty and staffrespect and appreciate each other's perspectives, commonalities, differences and contributions. Studentsaddress compelling urban issues, and they move into the wider community through experiential learning andinternships. Graduates will have the intellectual tools and confidence to be engaged citizens and responsibleleaders.

College is a time and a place and an idea -- an opportunity to cultivate the knowledge and experience requiredto meet intellectual, creative and professional goals. Guttman Community College supports students in buildingthe knowledge and skills necessary to interpret and evaluate ideas they encounter in and out of the classroomand to make informed judgments. Students learn to express their ideas and know that their voices are valued. They will graduate with a greater sense of responsibility for their academic success and personal growth, andthey will be prepared to pursue additional studies, a career and lifelong learning as active citizens.
