Definite Articles (the)• Should I use Der, Die or Das?

• This is one of the first questions that you should ask when learning German, which article should you use – Der, Die or Das ?

• The first thing you need to understand, is it is not related to the preceived gender of the noun, to which it is attached.

• Here are a couple of quick examples:

• der Rock – the skirt die Hose – the pants

FEMININE NOUNS The basic plural ending for feminine nouns is -en. A large percentage of them form the plural with some variation of this ending.

All feminine nouns which end in -e pluralize in -n. Nouns which end in -er or -el add -n instead of -en. Nouns which end in -in add -nen.

MASCULINE NOUNS. The most common plural ending is -e.Masculine nouns which end in -er, -el or -en never add an ending when forming the plural; in some cases an umlaut is added.

NEUTER NOUNS Most multisyllabic and quite a few monosyllabic neuters form the plural with -e. All nouns ending in -chen and -lein pluralize by adding nothing. As with masculines, neuters which end in -en, -el and -er (following a consonant) always pluralize by adding no ending, generally without an umlaut.

Plurals1. All plurals will become die.2. There are many endings for plurals in

German: e, n, s, er, en, nin, umlauts, endings with umlauts, or no ending, etc. .

3. I suggest using your dictionary on pages 260 - 274.

4. Examples: der Kuli, -s = die Kulis

das Klavier, - e = die Klaviere

Grades in German schools are assigned numbers (1-6) rather than letters as we know

them. The following grading system is commonly used:

1– sehr gut/ausgezeichnet (very good/excellent)2 – gut (good)

3 – befriedigend (satisfactory)4 – ausreichend (adequate)5 – mangelhaft (inadequate)

6 – ungenügend (unsatisfactory)It’s difficult to receive a 1 in a German high

school! Both 5 and 6 are considered failing grades. Generally tests and quizzes in German schools are

more subjective (essays) and contain fewer objective type answers (multiple choice).
