The Juniors were honored to welcome the Army Marksmanship Unit to their practice

expertise and insight as they prepare for a busy month of competition. In July, they will

compete at the 2018 Regional Match held at their home club of Canton McKinley Rifle and

Pistol Club in Canton, Ohio. The match is held July 6-8 and will finish in time for the Juniors

to pack and head north to Camp Perry for the NRA National Pistol Championships from

July 9-13th. There, the Juniors will compete once again for the title of High Junior Team,

which the program has previously won ten times. Stay tuned for results from a week of

16th Annual Ohio State Cowboy Action Championship Shoot

May 25-26-27, 2018

Your Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association (ORPA) was again a proud Match Sponsor at the 2018 Ohio Single

Action Shooting Society (SASS) State Championship, “Shootout at Hard Times”, at the Piqua Fish and Game

range. It was hosted by the Miami Valley Cowboys May 25-27, over the Memorial Day weekend. The match

was entitled “America the Beautiful”, and the event was dedicated to the memory of Bruce Kennett (A.K.A.

Buckshot Jones) who was so instrumental in establishing the Miami Valley Cowboys and the Hard Times

shooting range. He was among the many unsung heroes helping to make this country great. Semper Fi.

Mean Gun Mark and Boaz put on a stupendous match with over 165 competitors in attendance for this three

day event. It drew contestants from all over, from Maryland to Iowa and Canada. This year we saw younger

shooters…and they tended to dominate. Spud stole the show with his consistent speed, and watching him

shoot a stage in 13.9 seconds was amazing! Just picture this, at stage 10 you had a rifle loaded with 10 rounds

staged on a shelf, your pistols were loaded with 5 rounds each and holstered you had your shotgun staged on

another shelf several feet away and you were required to shoot it at least 4 targets. Yep, you counted right, 24

shots at 12 different targets at various distance from the shooter. And he did it under 14 seconds.

We also had some fantastic ORPA junior shooters as well. Kanshee Pick'em (A.K.A. Katelynn Hall) competed

in her first State match in the Buckerette division. Her fast and fancy shooting got her the prestigious First

Place ORPA award as well as first place overall in the State as well. We had some competition from returning

Buckeroo Big Ozz (A.K.A. Ozzie Gregg) who was also the ORPA and State champion in heated competition in

his division. But he bested them all by over 49 seconds! Not to be outdone, the Young Gun category was won

by Thomas Quigley (A.K.A. William Smith).

Our Ohio and Pistol Association was well represented with over 12 ORPA members competing in a variety of

shooting styles. When all the cling and clatter had stopped and the dust had settled the ORPA winners

emerged. In addition to the junior shooters, in the Senior Cowboy category it was Wilbur Green Rexroat

(A.K.A. Robert Steiger) shooting Senior Gunfighter while the Senior Cowgirl was Rose Louise Reasoner

(A.K.A. Karen Steiger) shooting Lady Gunfighter. The top ORPA Cowboy was Boaz (A.K.A. Jason Hardin)

shooting Frontier Cartridge Gunfighter.

Other ORPA shooters in the competition included: Blastin Brad (Brad Sabo) shooting Cowboy, Life-r (Michael

Life) shooting Frontier Cartridge, Rodent (David Volmer) shooting Cattle Barron, Ruger Ray (Ray McCoy)

shooting Frontier Cartridge Duelist, and Slow Poke Smith (Larry Dan Smith).

What an awesome match to shoot! Day one were all the side matches to include the Wild Bunch four stages

Mini Match, the Warm up 4 stage mini match, the Long range big bore and buffalo rifle matches, speed rifle,

speed shotgun and speed pistol events and the pocket pistol event. That evening was a fantastic steak dinner

at the PF&G.

The day prior to the match, Wilbur Rexroat hosted a SASS Range Officer I (ROI.) and Range Officer II Course.

The ROI Course is all classrooms and took about 6 hours then participants receive a ROI Certification Pin at

the end of the class. This is where they learn all of the rules of our game. The ROII Course was about 2-3

hours of classroom and then another couple of hours on the range doing Practical are that included having a

stage set up with safety problems and the class had to identify the problems and correct them.

Day one of the main match was HOT and it stayed that way throughout the entire event. Every target was

hittable yet no giveme's!.

There were only 14 clean shooters and your ORPA member who also shot clean was none other than Blastin

Brad.

The Final Overall Ohio Match winners were:

Sage Chick shooting Cowgirl and Skeeter Lee shooting Cowboy

The Final Overall Ohio State Match winner was:

Spud shooting cowboy

If you have not been able to compete in or attend one of these shoots in the past, it would be a great treat to

become involved. You will see shooters from all over the country converge. Sign up early as a lot of these

competitions have a ceiling and when full, they are full.

I hope everyone gets out and in the immortal words of the range officers, “Be safe, Have fun.”

End of Trail

This year we took a trip to a place just outside of Edgewood, New Mexico called Founders Ranch. This trip

was to compete in the Single Action Shooting Society’s (SASS) world championship match, commonly referred

to as End of Trail. This event brings SASS cowboys and cowgirls from all around the world to compete in a 12

stage match.

There were warm up shoots, side shoots and the main match. With awards being given for side matches and

the main match. The weather was 90 degrees during the day, 60 degrees at night. Little to no clouds with

winds 10 to 15 miles per hour, at an elevation of nearly 7,000 feet. The drive from Columbus, was a little under

1500 miles, with much of the way along route 66.

This year, there were over 620 competitors, representing 5 countries and the United States of America. This

match is shot over 3 days, with 3 different start time each day. Each flight of shooters would start at a different

time each day and shoot 4 stages. This would give everyone them close to the same weather conditions as the

other flights, at one time or another.

Most of the people in our posse (mine and William’s) were from the US, plus 4 from Australia. Not a diverse

group but well enough. With me shooting black powder, the wind basically allowed me to have no problems

seeing the targets. However that changed on the 3rd morning, no wind, no clouds and bright sun. The first 2

stages were difficult, since I was going for a clean match, the smoke just hung there. Then the wind showed up

for the last 2 stages.

My take from this match was that I had shot my fastest time for a 12 stage match by 50 seconds and I would

have to have been another 100 seconds faster to make the top 10 shooters in my category. However I did get

a white buffalo, 1 of 107 clean match winners. William also shot his quickest 12 stage match by 60 seconds.

He had one miss, but finished in the top 10 in his category. Many of our shooting friends that were at this

match finished in the top 10 in their respective category and a few of them are current world champions. We

have some of the best SASS competitors in the world in this state, and we are happy to shoot with them at any

match.
