In Orange Park, a local shooting range says their semi-automatic rifle sales have more than quadrupled. Last weekend, 49 people were killed and over 50 injured after a gunman entered a gay nightclub in Orlando and opened fire. Management at On Target Sports say this time of year is usually the store’s slow season for firearm sales. But not after the shooting in Orlando. According to the store’s staff, people rushed in to by Armalite rifles – also known as AR-15s, a gun similar to the Sig Sauer MCX that the Orlando gunman used. “They’re a pretty safe firearm to operate,” says Tyler Smith, Purchasing Manager for On Target Sports. “It’s all determined by how that person wants to use it.” Smith adds that the semi-automatic weapon is flying off the shelf. In just one week, sales went up 500 percent. “It’s gotten to the point where even distributors are running out of ARs as well,” Smith says. He says people are not only buying the guns for home defense, but also for shooting competitions. “There’s all sorts of competitions all over the world for shooting,” Smith says. Whether they’re bought for sports or home defense, owning just one of these guns could cost you thousands of dollars and every purchase involves a background check. “After the paperwork is filled out, if you come back approved, we process the payment and you can take your rifle home that day,” Smith says. He strongly recommends that you store your rifle or gun in a safe. “It’s important that everybody has a firearm and knows how to use it safely,” he says. “And goes out and purchases it safely and legally as well.” Smith also said that the fear of gun regulation is also boosting sales. Four separate gun control measures failed in the U.S. Senate on Monday. Many members of Congress have indicated they intend to try again, including U.S. House Representative Alan Grayson, Democrat of Florida.
