Guns: To Restrict or Not to Restrict

Gun violence appears to be becoming a norm in the United States, which leads to

the conversation o gun control legislation and restrictions! "an# conservatives resist an#

legislation that intereres with their Second $mendment right, while most liberals eel

there is a dire need or stricter irearm regulation!

$ccording to the Gun %iolence $rchive, &',()* people were killed b# irearms in

(+& and (*,)&- were in.ured! These statistics illustrate that some change is needed, but

does the answer lie in restricting guns/ 0denti#ing shooters who are mentall# ill/

The conservative mantra towards restrictive gun control is 1guns don2t kill people,

 people kill people!3 "an# blame mental illness as the cause or the repeated acts o gun

violence in $merica! The passing o the "ental 4ealth Reorm $ct o (+& in the

Republican controlled U!S! 4ouse and Senate demonstrates this! 4owever, these same

representatives in the United States voted against legislation that prevented those on the

terrorism watch list rom bu#ing irearms!

1The general public should not be able to purchase an# ull# automatic weapons,

that2s or sure,3 said "c6inne#! 10 can understand wanting to protect #oursel, but there2s

not need or a regular gu# to have an assault rile around his house!3

When asked about how gun control should be implemented, "c6inne# admitted

that he does not have enough knowledge about the sub.ect to provide a speciic plan, but

said some sort o action needs to be taken!

1So man# people have died rom gun violence over the past several #ears,3 he

said! 10 don2t care i it2s 9bama putting in an eecutive order or background checks and

what not, 0 .ust think something should change!3

6ate Sieber, &-, is currentl# a sophomore at ;lon Universit# ma.oring in strategic

communications! Sieber does not personall# own a gun, but her parents do or saet#

 purposes! When it comes to gun control, Sieber would like to see some tighter

restrictions, but is doubtul o the outcome!

Sieber suggested that the best and least controversial gun control restriction law

that could be implemented would be background checks and perhaps some short training

sessions!

 background checks were more thorough and people were trained on how to use a gun
