Like many local children, five-year-old Ivy Didcote is looking forward to attending the annual free event, especially the opportunity to see two of her favourite celebrities perform, Santa Claus and popular Australian children’s TV host and actress Justine Clarke.

“I’m already excited about going. I really enjoy dancing and singing to Christmas songs,” said Ivy.

With a crowd of up to 40,000 people expected to converge on Civic Park, people are encouraged to arrive early to reserve a place to sit.

Local Channel Nine media presenters Kate Collins and Will McDonald will compere the evening.

Guest artists, including Michael Griffiths and the Elliott Sisters, will be backed by a community choir and a band of Adelaide-based musicians.

More than 35 Christmas songs will be performed. See our pull-out program in this publication for more details.

Food and drinks will be available to buy from a variety of Fork on the Road food trucks.

The family fun zone, with jumping castles, face painting and amusement rides, will start at 4pm. Pre-show entertainment begins at 5pm.

An eight-minute fireworks display will conclude the event.

SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO CTTG Modbury’s Civic Park will once again come alive with the sound of Civic Park Carols on Sunday 16 December from 7.30 to 10pm – an event now considered to be one of the leading annual outdoor carols events in Australia.

Justine Clarke: Queen of the kidsBeloved Australian actress and children’s presenter Justine Clarke will make a popular return to Civic Park Carols on 16 December.

Clarke, a crowd favourite at our 2016 Civic Park Carols event, said she jumped at the chance to return.

“Civic Park Carols is all about bringing Christmas alive for children and adults alike.

“Having a sea of kids across that beautiful park singing and dancing is so heart-warming and so much fun! I couldn’t resist the opportunity to come back!”

Host of ABC TV’s Play School and The Justine Clarke Show, Clarke will perform early in the event with Santa.

Make the most of the summer weather and visit one of the many walking, hiking and cycling trails around our City.

The diverse geographical terrain of our City offers plenty of places to exercise and walk dogs.

Anstey Hill Recreation Park (Tea Tree Gully) and Cobbler Creek Reserve (Golden Grove) feature hiking trails and mountain biking tracks.

Enjoy a country walk without leaving your City, among the backdrop of creeks and vibrant vegetation and ridge-top views.

Visit the linear parks along the River Torrens, Dry Creek and the O-Bahn track to find more stretches of walking trails and cycling paths.

There are also plenty of spots to picnic or to simply take in the beautiful surroundings.

Visit the Walking SA website for more information.

Exercise groups are about so much more than just fitness, according to semi-retired accountant Bill Shields.

The 67-year-old is a regular at Modfit, one of our exercise programs for over 50s.

“It’s not just exercise, it’s social. When you go to Modfit, you’re with a group of people who have bonded together and it’s a lot of fun.

“When I come out, I’m sweating. I feel better in myself and it also keeps me in reasonably fit condition,” said Bill.

Bill has been attending Modfit solidly for about 18 months, while his wife Angela has attended for about five years.

Modfit is held at Golden Grove Recreation Centre on Wednesdays at 9.15 and 10.15am, and at Turramurra Recreation Centre (Highbury) on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9.30am.

Visit our website for information on other fitness programs for over 50s, including Strength for Life Aqua.

STRONG COMMUNITY

The Golden Fields Skate Park (Golden Grove) and Modbury Skate Plaza (Ridgehaven) are a hive of fun and action for skating enthusiasts.

These purpose-built facilities cater for skateboarding, inline skating, scooters and BMXs.

Both parks are equipped with the latest skating facilities, with plenty of space for rail slides, ledge grinds and carving it up in the bowl.

In addition, seating, drinking

fountains and toilets make the parks a popular space for sport and recreation throughout the year for both beginners and experienced riders.

Riding, skating or scootering at your local skate park is great fun for kids and adults of all ages and abilities. And who doesn’t want to have more fun in their day!

Visit the link below for more information about both parks.

Ramping up fun for skating enthusiasts Artistic designsGolden Fields Skate Park at Golden Grove now has a stunning new mural.

Well-known street artist Tarns One (aka Adam Poole-Mottishaw) created the mural following input from community members earlier this year.

Upgrades to main road streetscapes in Modbury are being driven by plans to transform the suburb to attract investors and foster business growth.

A funding commitment by Tea Tree Gully Council and the state government will see about $4 million invested in the Modbury area over three years until 2020, making the area more attractive for the local community.

Council will contribute 80% of the funding, with the rest funded by the State Local Government Infrastructure Partnership job program, backed by the state government and the Local Government Association of SA.

This financial year, $900,000 will be invested in upgrades to North East Road to improve pedestrian connections and the appeal of the area between Civic Park and Westfield’s new dining and entertainment development.

Upgrades to Smart Road will also continue, with an additional $900,000 allocated to upgrades between Reservoir Road and North East Road.

This will deliver improved footpaths, tree planting, and landscaped verges and medians, complementing recent upgrades to Tea Tree Plaza, Modbury Triangle Shopping Centre and proposed redevelopments at Modbury Hospital.

TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE IN MODBURYMajor makeover to add street appeal With home buyers looking for new housing near quality parks and transport, a major upgrade of Modbury’s Dalaston Reserve will help create new opportunities for investors and developers, while delivering improved community facilities.

New pedestrian and cycling paths to the O-Bahn Interchange, irrigated recreation spaces and landscaping, a new playground and improved lighting are set to be installed at this creekside reserve.

The $365,000 Council-funded redevelopment is expected to be completed by June 2019.

TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE IN MODBURYThe reserve is in a section of Modbury rezoned in 2015 to encourage the development of new and diverse housing – especially high quality medium- and high-density residential developments, such as townhouses.

The reserve upgrade is part of long-term plans to transform Modbury, create more jobs and boost economic growth in our region by improving public spaces.

Work was carried out in 2016 to address creek-bed erosion at Dalaston Reserve, with rock beaching and erosion fencing installed.

Wally, Jack and Jeanette Stepanek have been growing their business, Boating Scene, for close to 25 years.

Specialising in the service and sale of outboard motor boats, the business based in Golden Grove Industry Park assists boating and fishing enthusiasts from the City of Tea Tree Gully and beyond.

While they developed a reputation for providing exceptional service to their clients, there were areas of the business they wanted to build upon to achieve further growth.

So the Stepaneks sought the expert advice of Polaris Business and Innovation Centre – and, in doing so, they have gained valuable and practical business skills.

“It has been a wonderful learning experience,” Wally said. “Business owners are skilled in their particular

line of work, but not necessarily in marketing or budgeting.

“After attending the Polaris Business Fundamentals workshop this year, we gained a renewed interest and love for our business.”

The family has since attended other workshops hosted by Polaris and has found each one just as valuable.

“Polaris workshops are structured in a way that’s not overwhelming. They’re broken down into layman’s terms. And the one-on-one help afterwards is individualised,” said Wally.

Polaris is contracted by Council to provide support and services to local businesses.

Visit the Polaris website to learn more about free events, low-cost workshops and more.

GET BUSHFIRE READYNo matter where you live in the City of Tea Tree Gully, now is the time to prepare or review your bushfire plan, with fire danger season having already arrived.

“While we do as much as possible to prepare rural and other at-risk areas of our City, residents need to have bushfire plans in place to ensure their best chance of survival,” said Daryl Klingberg, City of Tea Tree Gully fire prevention officer and CFS member.

Council staff have already cleared about 80 km of fire tracks and cleared fire breaks in the Para Escarpment, a high bushfire risk area adjoining residential areas of Golden Grove, Greenwith and Wynn Vale.

Clearing of vegetation along all rural road verges has also commenced.

Mr Klingberg said staff would continue to maintain the fire tracks, fire breaks and verges throughout the fire season to reduce bushfire risk.

Your bushfire plan Visit the Country Fire Service website for details on how to prepare or check your bushfire plan.

The website can enable you to put together a basic plan that can be saved to your phone and shared with family and friends.

The website also includes information on understanding daily fire danger ratings, how to care for animals, and where to find bushfire safer places.

SUMMER FOOD SAFETY

In the rush to prepare Christmas lunch or dinner this year, please take a moment to consider the environmental impact it might have.

Something as simple as choosing to use regular plates and cutlery will make a positive difference to our environment.

If you do decide to use disposable plates, please consider buying paper plates rather than plastic.

Dirty paper plates can be disposed of

in your green waste bin (even if they have food on them), while plastic plates, cups and cutlery go in your recycling bin once food scraps have been removed. All food scraps can also go into your green waste bin.

Be aware of the amount of plastic packaging that comes with some food items. Any unavoidable clean, soft plastic, which can be scrunched into a ball, can be dropped off at major supermarket collection sites.

The installation of smart bins at two parks in the City of Tea Tree Gully is a sign of things to come.

Solar-powered smart bins, recently installed at Civic Park (Modbury) and Golden Fields Reserve (Golden Grove), compact rubbish so they can hold up to seven times their usual capacity.

While the bins cost about $8,000 each, they will pay for themselves in about three to five years due to the efficiencies they offer, helping to reduce the cost of waste services.

Because the bins compact rubbish, they don’t need to be emptied as often and less bins are required, resulting in savings of fuel, time spent to collect bins and CO₂ emissions.

The bins also notify maintenance and collection crews when they are full.

The move to install the bins follows a successful smart bin trial conducted at Golden Fields Reserve last summer.

Using smart bins shows how innovation can improve services and help reduce litter.

LIBRARY EVENTS WITH A TWIST ON OFFERFrom bringing military tanks to Civic Park, launching a mascot toy echidna into space, and hosting after-hours cocktail events, Tea Tree Gully Library at Modbury is building a reputation for delivering community events with a twist.

Testing the boundaries of what libraries do is all about breaking stereotypes and taking risks, according to library events officer Symon Williamson.

“Our library has become a community lounge room – a place to increase reading and digital literacy, as well as a place to socialise and relax.”

One of the most popular recurring events has been the Library Up Late series, an exclusive, gold-class-style

event with catering, champagne, live music and access to resources.

After our library showcased some of its events at a national library conference earlier this year, other libraries across the nation are now conducting similar events.

Symon says there are still people who think the old rules apply.

“They believe libraries should be quiet places with dusty old books, and no food or drinks. These stereotypes are what we have to break to maintain relevancy in a changing society.”

Visit our website for more information about what you can do at our library.

Symon Williamson, Penny Cowell and David Brooks are part of the team who bring events with a twist at Tea Tree Gully Library.

A welcome change is on the wayWe’re working on plans to make Tea Tree Gully Library visitors feel even more welcome than they already do.

Planned works for 2019 include creating an improved entrance, automating book returns and installing new carpet.

Last month we surveyed library visitors about collections, customer service and opening hours to see what else we can do to improve our service.

Keep up to date with what’s happening through our website or chat to a staff member next time you visit the library.
