Teachers Rally for EducationSo, how do you spread the word and connect the families

Gulfton/Sharpstown with the Promise Neighborhood? First, yo

    start with teachers.

On August 17, 2011, the first ever Promise Education Rally wa

held at the Baker-Ripley Neighborhood Center. Approximately 45

teachers, administrators and support staff from schothroughout the neighborhood came to hear about the importan

of their role in building a neighborhood of Promise.

Teachers were welcomed by Houston Mayor Annise Parker anNeighborhood Centers Inc. Board Member David ChaumettMayor Parker got the crowd to their feet by talking about th

potential she sees in this Houston neighborhood. She characterized the Gulfton Promise Neighborhood a

important to Houston because it reflects the increasing diversity of the country. The success of this neighborhoo

is vital to the success of our city, and in Houstons role as the leader in innovation, she said.

By framing Houston as the place where the world goes for solutions,

Mayor Parker shared that, Houston, we no longer have a problemWe have a promise. Each teacher left with new tools and resources for the school year and

an understanding that the Gulfton Promise Neighborhood does things

differently. To ensure the success of all students in the neighborhood,

teachers signed a pledge and completed the phrase, I promise to...

with a commitment they are making to the students and families of the

    Gulfton Promise Neighborhood.

A Year of Planning is CompleteNeighborhood Centers was awarded a Promise Neighborhood Planning Grant from

the U.S. Department of Education in September 2010, and for the past year we

have been working with the community to create a plan to revitalize the Gulfton

Promise Neighborhood. At its heart, the Gulfton Promise Neighborhood is about

making education a priority , and creating an environment in which the whole

community rallies around the education of its children. This includes access to a

network of braided support services that builds upon the strengths of the

individuals and families in the neighborhood.

At the end of August we submitted a request for implementation funding through

the Department of Education that would allow Neighborhood Centers and 26

community partners to fully implement the strategies to improve the education

outcomes for the neighborhood. We will know the results of this request before

the end of 2011 and look forward to continuing to work with our partners in this

    unique and vital community!
