Welcome to the National Easter Festival and Annual General Meeting of the

Guild of Servants of the Sanctuary.

We thank Fr Philip Barnes and the people of St Stephen’s Gloucester Road

for allowing us to hold our Festival in the Church.

After Mass lunch will be served in the Parish Centre which can be found

by immediately turning left out of the main door, walking down the road

and it is on the right hand side, just follow the crowds. A donation

towards the cost of the lunch would be gratefully received.

At the end of this booklet you will find full details of the AGM, so please

do bring this with you and remember to bring it back for this afternoon’s

liturgies.

It is always a great pleasure as a Guild to celebrate together the joy of the

Resurrection in this most magnificent place. The events of Holy Week I

am sure, for everyone of us, has been both challenging and rewarding and

so it is particularly nice that we can all just bathe in the glorious light that

shines brightly from the Easter candle and proclaim that Christ is Risen.

Today we give thanks to God for the many blessings He bestows on the

Guild over the last year and especially for the faithful men and women

throughout the country who are members of our Guild and we pray for

his continued blessing on all our work.

With the assurance of my continued prayers for you all.

Father Darren Smith

Warden

At 12 noon a Minister will enter church to lead:

THE REGINA COELI: (Sung by all)

All Joy to thee O Queen of Heaven: Alleluia!

He whom thou wast meet to bear: Alleluia!

As he promised, has arisen: Alleluia!

Pour for us to God thy prayer: Alleluia!

Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, Alleluia!

For the Lord is risen indeed, Alleluia!

O God, Who by the resurrection of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ has

brought joy to the whole world: Grant that through his Mother the Virgin

Mary we may obtain the joys of everlasting life; We ask this through Jesus

the Lord.

Amen

INTROIT HYMN

1.The day of resurrection!

Earth, tell it out abroad;

The Passover of gladness,

The Passover of God.

From death to life eternal,

From earth unto the sky,

Our Christ hath brought us over,

With hymns of victory.

2.Our hearts be pure from evil,

That we may see aright

The Lord in rays eternal

Of resurrection light;

And listening to his accents,

May hear so calm and plain

His own “All hail!” and, hearing,

May raise the victor strain.

3.Now let the heavens be joyful,

And earth her song begin,

The round world keep high triumph,

And all that is therein;

Let all things seen and unseen

Their notes of gladness blend,

For Christ the Lord hath risen,

Our Joy that hath no end.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit

Amen

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

The Celebrant then invites the people to call their sins to mind, and repent of

them.

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, firmly resolved to

keep God's commandments and to live in love and peace with all.

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against

you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed,

through negligence, through weakness, through our own

deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive

us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness

of life to the glory of your name. Amen.

KYRIE ELEISON

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon

you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and

strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through

Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

THE NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of

heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from

Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one

Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us

and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate

from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered

death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in

accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is

seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in

glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have

no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who

proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and

the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the

prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We

acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for

the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.

Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Let us pray with confidence to the Father in the words our Saviour gave us:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom

come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our

daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who

trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us

from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever

and ever.

Amen.

THE AGNUS DEI:

Jesus, Morning Star which never sets,

Jesus, Paschal Lamb and sacrifice:

Lamb of God, have mercy, Lamb of God, have mercy,

give us your peace.

Jesus, bursting from the shattered tomb,

Jesus, mighty Victor over death:

Lamb of God…

Jesus, Lord of life and Lord of light,

Jesus, here in form of bread and wine:

Lamb of God…

THE COMMUNION

This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed are those

who are called to his supper.

Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I

shall be healed.

COMMUNION HYMNS

(1)

1.Now the green blade riseth from

the buried grain,

wheat that in the dark earth many

days has lain;

Love lives again, that with the dead

has been:

Love is come again, like wheat that

springeth green.

2.In the grave they laid him, Love

whom men had slain,

thinking that never he would wake

again.

laid in the earth like grain that sleeps

unseen:

Love is come again, like wheat that

springeth green,

3.Forth he came at Easter, like the

risen grain,

he that for three days in the grave

had lain.

Quick from the dead my risen Lord is

seen:

Love is come again, like wheat that

springeth green.

4. When our hearts are wintry,

grieving, or in pain,

thy touch can call us back to life

again;

fields of our hearts that dead and

bare have been:

Love is come again, like wheat that

springeth green.

1.Blest be the God and Father of

Jesus Christ our Lord,

for hope to sinners given, through his

unfailing word;

the promise of redemption eternally

is sealed,

and Christ in deathless glory by

broken tomb revealed.

2.Here let the bread be broken of

fellowship and peace,

and in our blest communion the

anxious find release.

Our life of common sharing foretells

the life to come,

where truth and justice flower in

heav’ns eternal home.

3.Although we have not seen it, his promise we believe;

what minds can never capture our hearts by faith receive.

Our spirits thirst with longing, like infants at the breast,

to see the Saviour’s gory, and in his presence rest.

(3)

1.Let all mortal flesh keep silence,

and with fear and trembling stand;

ponder nothing earthly minded,

for with blessing in his hand

Christ our God to earth descendeth,

our full homage to demand.

2.King of kings, yet born of Mary,

as of old on earth he stood,

Lord of lords in human vesture,

in the Body and the Blood

he will give to all the faithful

his own self for heavenly food.

3.Rank on rank the host of heaven

spreads its vanguard on the way,

as the Light of light descendeth

from the realms of endless day,

that the powers of hell may vanish

as the darkness clears away.

4.At his feet the six-winged seraph;

cherubim with sleepless eye,

veil their faces to the Presence,

as with ceaseless voice they cry,

‘Alleluia, alleluia,

Alleluia, Lord Most High!’

THE POST COMMUNION PRAYER

is said, to which all respond:

THE DISMISSAL:

The Lord be with you

And also with you.

God the Father, by whose glory Christ was raised from the dead,

strengthen you to walk with him in his risen life: and the blessing of God

almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and

remain with you always.

Amen.

Go in the peace of Christ. Alleluia! Alleluia!

Thanks be to God. Alleluia! Alleluia!

FINAL HYMN

1.Thine be the glory,

risen, conquering Son;

Endless is the victory,

Thou o’er death hast won;

Angels in bright raiment

rolled the stone away,

Kept the folded grave-clothes

where Thy body lay.

Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son;

Endless is the victory, Thou o’er death hast won;

2.Lo! Jesus meets us,

risen from the tomb;

Lovingly He greets us,

scatters fear and gloom;

Let the church with gladness,

hymns of triumph sing;

For her Lord now liveth,

death hath lost its sting.

Thine be the glory…

3.No more we doubt Thee,

glorious Prince of life;

Life is naught without Thee;

aid us in our strife;

Make us more than conqu’rors,

through Thy deathless love:

Bring us safe through Jordan

to Thy home above.

Thine be the glory…

GUILD OFFICE and BENEDICTION

All stand as the procession enters

O God, make speed to save us.

O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world

without end. Amen. Alleluia.

It is well seen, O God,

how Thou goest: how Thou, my God and King, goest in Thy

Sanctuary. Alleluia.

PSALM 18 (v. 24 to end)

Therefore shall the Lord reward me after my righteous dealing:

and according unto the cleanness of my hands in his eye sight.

With the holy thou shalt be holy :

and with a perfect man thou shalt be perfect.

With the clean thou shalt be clean :

and with the froward thou shalt learn frowardness.

For thou shalt save the people that are in adversity:

and shalt bring down the high looks of the proud.

Thou also shalt light my candle :

the Lord my God shall make my darkness to be light.

For in thee I shall discomfit an host of men :

and with the help of my God I shall leap over the wall.

The way of God is an undefiled way :

the word of the Lord also is tried in the fire; he is the defender

of all them that put their trust in him.

For who is God, but the Lord :

or who hath any strength, except our God?

It is God, that girdeth me with strength of war :

and maketh my way perfect.

He maketh my feet like harts' feet :

Page 16: Guild of Servants of the Sanctuary - additionalcurates.co.uk fileand it is on the right hand side, just follow the crowds. A donation towards the cost of the lunch would be gratefully

and setteth me up on high.

He teacheth mine hands to fight :

and mine arms shall break even a bow of steel.

Thou hast given me the defence of my salvation :

thy right hand also shall hold me up, and thy loving

correction shall make me great.

Thou shalt make room enough under me for to go :

that my footsteps shall not slide.

I will follow upon mine enemies, and overtake them:

neither will I turn again till I have destroyed them.

I will smite them, that they shall not be able to stand :

but fall under my feet.

Thou hast girded me with strength unto the battle :

thou shalt throw down mine enemies under me.

Thou hast made mine enemies also to turn their backs upon me:

and I shall destroy them that hate me.

They shall cry, but there shall be none to help them :

yea, even unto the Lord shall they cry,

but he shall not hear them.

I will beat them as small as the dust before the wind :

I will cast them out as the clay in the streets.

Thou shalt deliver me from the strivings of the people:

and thou shalt make me the head of the heathen.

A people whom I have not known :

shall serve me.

As soon as they hear of me, they shall obey me:

but the strange children shall dissemble with me.

The strange children shall fail:

and be afraid out of their prisons.

The Lord liveth, and blessed be my strong helper:

and praised be the God of my salvation.

Even the God that seeth that I be avenged :

and subdueth the people unto me.

It is he that delivereth me from my cruel enemies, and setteth

me up above mine adversaries :

thou shalt rid me from the wicked man.

For this cause will I give thanks unto thee, O Lord, among the Gentiles :

and sing praises unto thy Name.

Great prosperity giveth he unto his King:

and sheweth loving-kindness unto David his anointed,

and unto his seed for evermore.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son:

and to the Holy Ghost.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be:

world without end. Amen.

All: It is well seen, O God, how Thou goest: how Thou, my God

and King, goest in Thy Sanctuary. Alleluia.

Give unto the Lord the glory

due unto his name: bring an offering and come before Him:

worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. Alleluia.

PSALM 84 Quam Dilecta!

O how amiable are thy dwellings :

thou Lord of hosts!

My soul hath a desire and longing to enter into the courts of

the Lord :

my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God.

Yea, the sparrow hath found her an house, and the swallow a nest

where she may lay her young :

even thy altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God.

Blessed are they that dwell in thy house :

they will be alway praising thee.

Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee :

in whose heart are thy ways.

Who going through the vale of misery use it for a well :

and the pools are filled with water.

They will go from strength to strength :

and unto the God of gods appeareth every one of them in Sion.

O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer :

hearken, O God of Jacob.

Behold, O God our defender :

and look upon the face of thine anointed.

For one day in thy courts :

is better than a thousand.

I had rather be a door-keeper in the house of my God :

than to dwell in the tents of ungodliness.

For the Lord God is a light and defence :

the Lord will give grace and worship, and no good thing

shall he withhold from them that live a godly life.

O Lord God of hosts :

blessed is the man that putteth his trust in thee.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son:

and to the Holy Ghost.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be:

world without end. Amen.

Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: bring an

offering and come before Him: worship the Lord in the beauty of

holiness. Alleluia.

Lord, I have loved

the habitation of Thy House: and the place where Thine Honour

dwelleth. Alleluia.

PSALM 122 Laetatus sum

I was glad when they said unto me :

We will go into the house of the Lord.

Our feet shall stand in thy gates :

O Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is built as a city :

that is at unity in itself.

For thither the tribes go up, even the tribes of the Lord:

to testify unto Israel, to give thanks unto the Name of the Lord.

For there is the seat of judgement :

even the seat of the house of David.

O pray for the peace of Jerusalem :

they shall prosper that love thee.

Peace be within thy walls :

and plenteousness within thy palaces.

For my brethren and companions' sakes :

I will wish thee prosperity.

Yea, because of the house of the Lord our God :

I will seek to do thee good.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son:

and to the Holy Ghost.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be:

THE SHORT CHAPTER. Malachi 1. 11

From the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name

He hath filled the hungry with good things :

and the rich he hath sent empty away.

He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel:

as he promised to our forefathers,

Abraham and his seed for ever.

HYMN BEFORE PROCESSION

During which a collection will be taken

1.This joyful Eastertide,

away with sin and sorrow,

my love, the Crucified,

hath sprung to life this morrow.

Had Christ, that once was slain,

ne’er burst his three-day prison,

our faith had been in vain:

but now hath Christ arisen,

arisen, arisen, arisen.

2.My flesh in hope shall rest,

and for a season slumber:

‘til trump from east to west

shall wake the dead in number.

Had Christ, that once was slain

ne’er burst his three-day prison,

our faith had been in vain:

but now hath Christ arisen,

arisen, arisen, arisen.

3.Death’s flood hath lost his chill,

since Jesus crossed the river:

lover of souls, from ill

my passing soul deliver.

Had Christ, that once was slain

ne’er burst his three-day prison,

our faith had been in vain:

but now hath Christ arisen,

arisen, arisen, arisen.

Let us go forth in peace

In the name of Christ. Amen

PROCESSION

(1)

1.Alleluia, alleluia,

hearts to heav’n and voices raise;

sing to God a hymn of gladness,

sing to God a hymn of praise:

He who on the Cross a victim

for the world’s salvation bled,

Jesus Christ, the King of Glory,

now is risen from the dead.

2.Christ is risen, Christ the first-

fruits

of the holy harvest field,

which will all its full abundance

at His second coming yield;

then the golden ears of harvest

will their heads before him wave,

ripened by his glorious sunshine,

from the furrows of the grave.

3.Christ is risen, we are risen;

shed upon us heav’nly grace,

rain, and dew, and gleams of glory

from the brightness of thy face;

that we, with our hearts in heaven,

here on earth may fruitful be,

and by angel-hands be gathered,

and be ever, Lord, with thee.

4.Alleluia, alleluia,

glory be to God on high;

alleluia to the Saviour,

who has gained the victory;

alleluia to the Spirit,

fount of love and sanctity;

alleluia, alleluia,

to the Triune Majesty. Amen!

(2)

1.Come, ye faithful, raise the

strain

of triumphant gladness;

God hath brought his Israel

into joy from sadness;

loosed from Pharaoh’s bitter yoke

Jacob’s sons and daughters,

led them with unmoistened foot

through the Red Sea waters.

2.’Tis the spring of souls today;

Christ has burst his prison,

and from three days’ sleep in

death

as a sun hath risen;

all the winter of our sins,

long and dark, is flying

from his light, to whom we give

laud and praise undying.

Page 24: Guild of Servants of the Sanctuary - additionalcurates.co.uk fileand it is on the right hand side, just follow the crowds. A donation towards the cost of the lunch would be gratefully

3.Now the queen of seasons,

bright

with the day of splendour,

with the royal feast of feasts,

comes its joy to render;

comes to glad Jerusalem,

who with true affection

welcomes in unwearied strains

Jesu’s resurrection.

4.Neither might the gates of

death,

nor the tomb’s dark portal,

nor the watchers, nor the seal

hold thee as a mortal;

but today amidst thine own

thou didst stand, bestowing

that thy peace which evermore

passeth human knowing.

5.“Alleluia!” now we cry

to our King immortal,

who, triumphant, burst the bars

of the tomb’s dark portal;

“Alleluia!” with the Son,

God the Father praising,

“Alleluia!” yet again to the Spirit raising.

(3)

1.Love's redeeming work is done,

fought the fight, the battle won.

Lo, our Sun's eclipse is o'er!

Lo, he sets in blood no more!

2.Vain the stone, the watch, the

seal!

Christ has burst the gates of hell;

death in vain forbids his rise;

Christ has opened paradise.

3.Lives again our glorious King;

where, O death, is now thy sting?

Dying once, he all doth save;

where thy victory, O grave?

4.Soar we now where Christ has

led,

following our exalted Head;

made like him, like him we rise,

ours the cross, the grave, the

skies.

5.Hail the Lord of earth and heaven!

Praise to thee by both be given:

thee we greet triumphant now;

hail, the Resurrection thou!

(4)

1.The strife is o'er, the battle

done;

now is the Victor's triumph won;

now be the song of praise begun.

Alleluia!

2.Death's mightiest powers

have done their worst,

and Jesus hath his foes dispersed;

let shouts of praise and joy

outburst.

Alleluia!

3.On the third morn he rose again

glorious in majesty to reign;

O let us swell the joyful strain!

Alleluia!

4.He broke the age-bound chains

of hell;

the bars from heaven's high

portals fell;

let songs of praise his triumph tell.

Alleluia!

5.Lord, by the stripes which wounded thee

from death's dread sting thy servants free,

that we may live, and sing to thee.

Alleluia!

(5)

1.Jesus lives! Thy terrors now

can no more, O death, appal us;

Jesus lives! By this we know

thou, O grave, canst not enthral

us.

Alleluia!

2.Jesus lives! Henceforth is death

but the gate of life immortal:

this shall calm our trembling

breath

when we pass its gloomy portal.

Alleluia!

3.Jesus lives! For us he died,

then, alone to Jesus living,

pure in heart may we abide,

glory to our Saviour giving.

Alleluia!

4.Jesus lives! Our hearts know

well

naught from us his love shall

sever;

life nor death nor powers of hell

tear us from his keeping ever.

Alleluia!

Page 26: Guild of Servants of the Sanctuary - additionalcurates.co.uk fileand it is on the right hand side, just follow the crowds. A donation towards the cost of the lunch would be gratefully

5.Jesus lives! To him the throne

over all the world is given:

may we go where he is gone,

rest and reign with him in heaven.

Alleluia!

BENEDICTION OF THE MOST HOLY SACRAMENT

Sacred Ministers go to the altar:

O Saving Victim, opening wide

The gate of heaven to man

below,

Our foes press hard on every

side;

Thine aid supply, thy strength

bestow.

All praise and thanks to thee

ascend,

For evermore blest One in

Three;

O grant us life that shall not

end,

In our true native land with

thee. Amen.

Here may follow devotions or prayers.

Therefore we, before him

bending,

This great Sacrament revere;

Types and shadows have their

ending,

For the newer rite is here;

Faith, our outward sense

befriending,

Makes the inward vision clear.

Glory let us give and blessing

To the Father and the Son;

Honour, might and praise

addressing

While eternal ages run;

Ever too his love confessing

Who, from both, with both is

one. Amen.

Let us Pray

Lord Jesus Christ, you gave us the Eucharist as the memorial of your

suffering and death. May our worship of this sacrament of your body

and blood help us to experience the salvation you won for us and the

peace of the kingdom where you live with the Father and the Holy

Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

Please bow your heads as the Priest gives Benediction of the Holy Sacrament.

Blessed be God.

Blessed be His Holy Name.

Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true Man.

Blessed be the Name of Jesus.

Blessed be his Most Sacred Heart.

Blessed be his Most Precious Blood.

Blessed be Jesus Christ in the Most Holy Sacrament of the

Altar.

Blessed be the Holy Ghost the Comforter.

Blessed be the great Mother of God, Mary most Holy.

Blessed be her Holy and Immaculate Conception.

Blessed be her Glorious Assumption.

Blessed be the name of Mary, Virgin and Mother.

Blessed be St. Joseph, her most chaste Spouse.

Blessed be God in His Angels and in His Saints.

While the Sacrament is returned the following is sung:

Let us adore for ever the most Holy Sacrament.

O praise the Lord all ye heathen:

praise him all ye nations,

For his merciful kindness is ever more and more towards us:

and the truth of the Lord endureth for ever.

Praise the Lord.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son:

and to the Holy Ghost.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be:

world without end. Amen.

Secretary General’s Report 2018 This is my first report as the Secretary General after taking over from Terry Doughty last

year, I would like to start by expressing my thanks for all the help that Terry has given

me over what have been a very busy 12 months.

The Guild received and admitted 30 new members and 2 Priest Associates during 2018

from around the country, 3 of whom live and serve in Malta.

The Easter Festival remains fairly well attended with around 100 again in 2018, the

Autumn Festival at St George’s Cullercoates in October was not too well attended, our

thanks to Councillor Rowland Robbins for his work in organising this Festival.

I would also like to thank Fr Darren, Nigel Makepeace and Colin Squires for their help

this year as I have been getting to grips with the role of Secretary General.

On behalf of all the Council I would like to thank those members who have particular

responsibilities in the running of the Guild be it nationally or locally. I would like to thank

Peter Keat for the tireless work he puts into each copy of The Server, Nigel Makepeace

for his work as Treasurer General, Angela McMullen who produces the Prayer Cycle for

the Server Magazine, and all who maintain the website. Lastly but just as importantly all

the Councillors, Chapter Secretaries and Chapter Treasurers along with Chapter

Chaplains for without these dedicated and hardworking members the Guild would not be

what it is, it is through their work that the Guild meets for Worship and Fellowship

throughout England, Wales and Overseas.

As always we send our sympathies to all relatives and friends of members who have

passed on during the last year, May they rest in Peace and rise in glory.

During the last year I have found the task of Secretary General to be a lot more

complicated than first thought as I am sure you can all imagine, as I mentioned at the

start I am grateful to Terry for all the advice he has given me over the last 12 months,

and to the Council for their support especially over the latter half of the year which has

been very busy and difficult time for me. Difficult due to the loss of my Father in

September, and busy due to the birth of my daughter in October, as I am sure you can

imagine this has affected the amount of time I was able to spend on Guild affairs and I

have to thank both Fr Darren and Nigel Makepeace for holding the fort during that time.
