Typical conventional units
1.2.0 General notes
Each medium size current transformer can bereplaced by an ABB KEVCD sensor. The earthingswitch is not a compulsory switchgear acces-sory.
Voltage transformers in fixed version are notequipped with fuses.
Low voltage compartment height is 705 mm if adifferent one is not mentioned. Other heights are580 mm and 1100 mm.
Total height of the unit includes the low voltagecompartment and is without an exhaust duct.
Indicated number of cables is the maximumavailable. Voltage transformers occupy oneposition as well as surge arresters.
Rating of panels with vacuum contactor isalways 400 A.
Voltage transformers cannot have a fuse statusindication if they are located in the cable com-partment.
Dimensions of panels may vary depending onproject requirements.

Each medium size current transformer can bereplaced by an ABB KEVCD sensor. The earthingswitch is not a compulsory switchgear acces-sory.
Voltage transformers in fixed version are notequipped with fuses.
Low voltage compartment height is 705 mmunless a different one is mentioned. Anotherheight is 1100 mm. Height 580 mm is notavailable for double busbar system.
Total height of the unit including an exhaust ductmay vary depending on the type of the duct. Theheight in the table is one of the options.
Indicated number of cables is the maximumavailable. Voltage transformers occupy oneposition as well as surge arresters.
Rating of panels with vacuum contactor isalways 400 A.
Voltage transformers cannot have a fuse statusindication if they are located in the cable com-partment.
Dimensions of panels may vary depending onproject requirements if there is any DTO (DesignTo Order) modification.

The value of the rated current is referred to45 C. The value of the rated current at thistemperature value is indicated in brackets on thefollowing pages.
Each medium size current transformer can bereplaced by an ABB KEVCD sensor.
The earthing switch is not a compulsoryswitchgear accessory.
Voltage transformers in fixed version are notequipped with fuses.
Low voltage compartment height is 705 mmunless a different one is mentioned. Otherheights are 580 mm and 1100 mm.
Total height of the unit includes low voltagecompartment (705 mm) and is without theexhaust duct.
Indicated number of cables is the maximumadmissible. Removable voltage transformersoccupies one position as well as surge arresters.
Rating of the panels with vacuum contactor isalways 400 A.

General characteristics
4.14
4.14.1 Degree of protection
The standard external degree of protection of themarine switchgear is IP42 or IP43.
IP42: protection against foreign bodies withdiameter 1mm and against water at 15;
IP43: protection against foreign bodies withdiameter 1mm and against water at 60.
4.14.3 Compact duct with top chimneys
The duct is fixed on the top of the auxiliarycompartment. In marine plants, the exhaust gas cannot generallybe evacuated out of the room and therefore thegas duct will always be closed on both end sidesand equipped with top chimneys or an absorber. If it is possible in some cases to evacuate hot gasout of the room, the standard gas duct can besupplied.
4.14.2 Busbar partitioning
On marine plants the units (busbars) need amechanical support for fault current due to thehigh level of vibrations; so bushings are put oneach unit.

The switchgear rated characteristics are guaran-teed under the following ambient conditions: minimum ambient temperature - 5 C maximum ambient temperature + 40 C maximum relative humidity 95 % maximum altitude 1000 m above sea level. presence of normal, non-corrosive and
unpolluted atmosphere.
The switchgear must also be installed in ambientswith the following characteristics: inside masonry or prefabricated structures; suitable for containing electrical apparatus; closed and not accessible to the public; only utilisable by personnel in charge of the

The rated values are guaranteed at sea level andunder normal atmospheric conditions (IEC 60071-2,pressure 1013 h Pa, temperature 20 C, relativehumidity 11 g/m3).The degree of air insulation decreases progres-sively as the altitude increases. In any case, therated values are guaranteed up to 1000 metresabove sea level.

5.5
5.5.1 Reference Standards
IEC 62271-200 Annex A.
Meaning of the criteria of the IEC 62271-200Standard for carrying out the internal arc withstandtests:
5.5.2 Switchgear characteristics
The UniGear switchboard satisfies all the criteriafrom 1 to 5 for guaranteeing safety of the person-nel in charge of the installation in the case of aninternal arc.The criteria apply to the external switchgearhousing.
5.5.3 Switchgear classification
UniGear is classified as IAC accessibility type Bacc. to IEC 62271-200
5.5.4 Overlapping period of IEC 60298
There is an overlapping period within the EuropeanUnion. IEC 60298 is valid until 31st Dec. 2007
Criteria Description
1 The switchgear doors must remain closed and there must be no opening of the coveringsheets
2 No part of the switchgear which is a possible source of danger for personnel must becomedetached
3 No drilling holes on the external housing of the switchgear must be made in the parts accessi-ble to personnel
4 The vertical and horizontal fabric indicators on the outside of the switchgear must not catch fire
5 All the switchgear earthing connections must remain efficient
Installation of UniGear with gas ducts
86
5.6.1 Introduction
The event of internal arc inside medium voltageswitchgear occurs very rarely and generatesoverpressures inside the compartment affected bythe arc, thereby causing exhaust of hot gases andmaterial particles. This exhaust must be carefully checked in order toguarantee safety of people and avoid damage tothe objects in the vicinity of the switchgearaffected by the breakdown.
UniGear can be equipped with a metal sheet ductfor collecting and exhausting the hot gases. This duct is mounted on the upper side of theswitchgear and is normally extended on both theright and left extremities (see Figure 5/1).
Figure 5/1
5.6
87
The minimum height of the switchgear room is3 metres and the degree of protection obtainableis up to IP53.
This solution is capable of guaranteeing safety ofpeople standing in front of the switchgear, accord-ing to Annex A of the IEC 62271-200 Standard(criteria 1 to 5).
If the extremities of the gas duct aredirected towards areas of the installa-tion building that are accessible topersonnel and/or dedicated to installa-tion of other equipment, machines andplants, these extremities must beextended in order to permit the exhaustof the hot gases in zones that are notdangerous for people and machinery.
The extensions must be realised usingmetal sheet gas ducts with a crosssection at least equal to the extendedsections already applied to theswitchgear. The extensions must becapable of withstanding a minimumpressure value of 80kPa and must beproperly supported. The presence ofbends and curves in the ducts must beaccepted only where strictly necessary:in this case, the bend must be realisedwith the maximum applicable bendingradius.
The solution recommended in order to avoidexhausting of gases and overpressures inside theswitchgear installation room is to extend theexhaust duct outside the substation (from left andright sides or front and rear sides). In this case, pay attention to accessibility of people to the gas-exhausting zone and protect the gas exhaustchannel extremity in order to avoid entry of water, dust, small animals and any foreign bodies.
Figures 5/1 and 5/2 show two examples of realgas ducts applications.
Installation of UniGear with gas ducts
88
The height B of the panel equipped with thestandard gas duct arrangement (Figures 5/1 and5/2) is 2675 mm (12/17.5 kV version) or 2775 mm(24 kV version). The switchgear height A is 2200mm (12/17.5 kV version) or 2325 mm (24 kVversion) if equipped with the 705 mm LV compart-ment.
Figure 5/2 Rear exhaust arrangement
The figures contained in Section 5.6.2 show thestandard arrangement (front and side view). If the dimensions and position of the switchgearroom do not allow installation of the switchgearaccording to the solutions presented above, it ispossible to arrange gas exhausting according tothe rules indicated in Section 5.6.3.
Test certification is not available for allthe described solutions. Please contactABB for further information.
