The City Office in Mumbai undertook a study to investigate the skills issues affecting financial services firms in India and identify areas where UK

qualifications can be matched to these gaps. This summary document provides a guide to UK financial services qualifications and training

bodies that offer internationally recognised qualifications and certifications within Banking, Insurance, Capital Markets, Investment Banking and

Asset/Fund Management.

To identify the technical skills gap within the Indian financial services sector; data was collected through a survey, select interviews with senior

executives and desk research. Participating organisations represented the Banking, Insurance, Capital Markets, Investment Banking and

Asset/Fund management sectors.

The findings from the study indicate that for the banking sector, the key technical skills gaps are within treasury management and private

banking. In the insurance sector, companies face a shortage of technically qualified actuaries, underwriters, risk managers and new insurance

product developers. The capital markets sector highlights the need for well trained and certified equity analysts, financial planners, traders and

advisors. Under investment banking the requirement is for qualified and experienced M&A and project finance professionals. Finally for

Asset/Fund Management companies the key challenge is finding suitably qualified and skilled fund managers, portfolio managers and

investment advisors.

The guide provides a snapshot of the technical skills gap in India and matches the gaps with the available UK based financial services

qualifications and training institutions, as part of the City of London, City of Learning initiative1. The guide highlights the course type (Short term,

Certificate, Diploma or Advanced Diploma / MSc), most of the qualifications offered are online programmes.
