WelcomeThe Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) is contributing to wealth creation through excellence in technology-oriented career and professional education and training, applied research and service. As an academic community, we continuously strive to produce enhanced economic utility through scholarly activities, as expressed in discovering, preserving and applying knowledge.

The Institution was established in 1994 through an Act of Parliament and is situated in the heart of the City of Windhoek, Namibia. Since then the University has grown to become a top performing higher education institution and was rewarded many rewards including the PMR Africa Reviews.

Currently, NUST has over 11,000 students studying on a full-time, part-time and distance education basis. It consists of six Faculties namely, Computing and Informatics; Engineering, Health and Applied

Sciences, Human Sciences, Management Sciences, Natural Resources and Spatial Sciences. Additionally, the University established the Harold Pupkewitz - Graduate School of Business (HP-GSB) to provide world-class business education that meets the needs of economy and society in Namibia, SADC and Africa.

Our qualifications are nationally and internationally recognised through a rigorous development and approval process including benchmarking and quality assurance.

All our students are equipped with relevant computer skills and knowledge of information systems. Our campus has wireless connections in strategic places enabling students to use their own computers to access the Student Kiosk, Webmail and Internet. With almost 2000 computers available in Computer Labs all over the main campus and regional centres, students can use these facilities to quickly access the Internet between and after classes.

Admission Point ScaleNUST uses the Admission Point Scale to facilitate admission based on your school-leaving results. Your school-leaving subject symbols or percentages are converted into points, then added up to determine if you have obtained the minimum number of points required to be considered for entry into your preferred programme of study.

Note:

1. English is always counted in the calculation of points.

2. Mathematical Literacy (NSC) is not accepted for programmes requiring Mathematics as an admission requirement

The National Qualifications Framework is a register of all relevant and legal qualifications in Namibia kept by the Namibia Qualifications Authority. Rules for Applying• Before you apply to NUST please familiarise yourself with

the programmes/qualifications on offer as well as the admission requirements.

• After deciding on a qualification, you may apply online (www. nust.na) or you may submit an application form at the NUST Main Campus, or at any of the Regional Centres or via the post.

• Applying online provides you with immediate notification that your application has been received. You will also be able to follow the progress of your application online and NO application fee is charged. Strategic self-help stations have been established on the Main Campus as well as at the Regional Centres for those applicants who do not have access to internet services. These points will be in operation from 08:00 to 15:00 daily.

• Submit only ONE application. Make sure that you complete the entire application form.

• Incomplete applications will not be considered for admission.

• All documents as stipulated on page 9 of this Guide must be enclosed with your application.

• We do not accept faxed copies of application forms or supporting documents.

• You will need a valid email address since all admission correspondence to you will be conducted via email.

• After registration, you will be assigned with a free NUST email address, where all your future correspondence will be send to. No private emails will be used for correspondence after registration.

General Admission Requirements

Current Grade 11 and 12 learners or learners who completed Grade 12.

25 points in 5 subjects including a minimum E-Symbol inEnglish on NSSC Ordinary Level.

Mature Age Entry Scheme

Applicants who do not meet the General Admission Requirements, but who have passed at least Grade 10/ Standard 8.

Applicants must:- have reached the age of 23

years on 1 January of the academic year for which admission is sought;

- have at least a Junior Secondary Certificate (Standard 8/Grade 10);

- show evidence that they have worked for at least three years and;

- pass the NUST Numeracy and English Language Proficiency tests which will take place from 24 to 26 September 2020.

Advanced Standing

Advanced Standing

Applicants with NQF Credits or qualifications from other accredited institutions of higher learning who would like to enter higher study levels within a programme.

Admission with advanced standing shall be considered under the following conditions:• NQF Credits must make up

at least the equivalent of one study period (one semester or one year) of the programme for which advanced standing is applied for; and

• NQF Credits must not be older than eight years and must be presented in an official original academic transcript from the institution concerned

Postgraduate Studies

Honours Degree At least a Bachelor’s degree at NQF Level 7 or equivalent

Master Degree At least a Bachelor Honours degree at NQF Level 8 or equivalent

Doctoral Degree At least a Master’s Degree at NQF Level 9 or equivalent

Online Applications

COMPLETE STEPS 1 TO 7 Step 1: Ensure that your biographical information is correct. Enter your email address. All correspondence will be via email.

Step 2: The acceptance of the Declaration and Undertaking is mandatory and serves as your electronic signature. The

indicator will be stored on your student file and can be used as a Legal Agreement in a dispute/disciplinary matter.

This form must be printed, signed and uploaded. (If you are under the age of 18, it must also be signed by your

parents or legal guardian).

Step 3: If you have any disability, kindly complete this step – if not, you may skip it.Step 4: Capture your Grade 12 results. Your results must be converted in to symbols / grades.

Step 5: If you have post-grade 12 qualifications, you can complete this step. If not, you may skip this step.

Step 6: Choose the programme which you would like to study. First choice must be indicated by the number 1 and Second

choice by the number 2. If you would like to change your programme of study you are welcome to send us an email.

Final Step: Your application will be incomplete without the necessary documents being uploaded.

How do I apply online?

• Log on to the NUST Website at www.nust.na and click on the “Admissions” link.

• Click on “online application” and choose the type of application e.g. Undergraduate, Postgraduate etc.

• Read the Notes at the top of each page before you continue to the next page.

You must provide us with a valid email address. Remember your reference number and pin. The pin should not start with a zero (0) and it should not contain double digits

• Some fields have drop-down lists to choose from.

• Part A and B, should be completed by first-time applicants only.• Should you already have a student number from NUST, please

login as a “Registered User.”

Certified copies of documents that must accompany your application:

• Identity Document/Birth Certificate (Namibian citizens); Passport (non-Namibian citizens);

• Proof of payment (e.g. original bank deposit slip) or receipt for applying manually;

• Latest school results e.g. Namibian Senior Secondary Certificate (NSSC);

• Current Grade 11 and 12 learners must apply with their August 2020 results;

• Declaration and undertaking - If you are under the age of 18, the form must be co-signed by your legal guardian or parent.

In addition to the above-mentioned documents, the following applicants must also submit the indicated documents:

Mature Age Entry Scheme Applicants: Reference letter from employer. Indicating your years of experience as well as the job title.

• Postgraduate Applicants: Certified copies of qualification(s) obtained after Grade 12 (e.g. Diploma, Degree, etc.) and Original Academic Record/Transcripts. For Masters’ and Doctoral Programmes applicants must also attach a proposal motivational letter and CV with at least three referees.

• Advanced Standing Applicants: Original Academic Record transcripts and complete syllabi.

• Foreign Applicants: Latest qualification in original language and a translation if the qualification is in a language other than English, NQA Evaluation if the qualification is obtained outside the SADC Region.

Final SelectionFinal selection for a programme will take place during February 2021, based on the final examination results of all qualifying candidates for that programme.

All qualifying candidates will report on campus on dates as determined by the Registrar and will participate in such specific selection processes as may be determined by the Department concerned.

A qualifying candidate is a candidate who has properly submitted an application for studies, who has met the general admission requirements and who has met the specific admission requirements for a programme.

The final selection process will generally not be applicable to students who wish to study on a distance education mode, but may be so applied in exceptional cases. Notices will be given in such cases.

RegistrationRegistration of students who have been selected and who have applied during the application period in 2020 takes place during February and March 2021. The dates will be stipulated in your admission letter. You are expected to report for registration on the exact date as indicated on your admission letter otherwise you may forfeit your place.

Hostel AccommodationThree hostels on campus provide a bed capacity of 417 to both male and female full-time students. Due to limited spaces available, preference is given to students residing outside the boundaries of the City of Windhoek. The Kitchen Services provide students with a wide range of nutritional meals served at breakfast, lunch and dinner. All residence students will be levied 50% of the meal fees per semester which is payable whether meals are taken or not. Application forms for Hostel Accommodation can be found on the NUST Website at www.nust.na. Registration for residence is done per semester.

Other Student Activities• Sport and Culture: Sports provides a platform for students to

participate in a variety of sport codes while cultural activities encourage cultural heritage including a week-long cultural festival, crowning of “Mr and Miss NUST” and other activities.

• Job-placement Services: Provide students with career guidance counselling e.g. Workshops in CV writing and job-hunting skills, career guidance programmes e.g. annual Career Fair, graduate recruitment programme and job placement of students.

• Health Services Clinic: Provides primary health care, focuses on the prevention of illness and promotes a healthy lifestyle and general hygiene.

• Social Welfare Services: Focuses on social problems and promotes mental health for students. Various workshops take place throughout the year, on topics ranging from relationships, sexual harassment, stress management, alcohol and substance abuse, etc.

• Student Counselling and HIV/AIDS Coordination Services: Provides academic and HIV pre- and post-test counselling. Various events take place throughout the year e.g. Leadership workshops, HIV/ AIDS Awareness Campaign, HIV/AIDS Peer Counselling Training etc.

Other Services Offered:

• E-Learning: E-Learning is a method of learning utilising electronic technologies to access educational curricula outside of a traditional classroom. This means you can study anywhere and at any time, which is a real plus for those students who have a busy schedule.

• Free web-based email and student web service: Allows students access to student records, financial statements, examination time-tables etc.

• Different Societies/Clubs: NUST Debating Society, Religious Societies, Women in Engineering Society, Aids Awareness Club etc

Welcome to the Faculty of Computing and Informatics.

The vision of the Faculty is to provide the best regional practical-oriented tertiary education, in Information and Communication Technology and computer studies, through internationally recognised programs, research and service to enable students to be professional leaders within the national, regional and global knowledge-based society.

The Faculty consists of two departments: the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Informatics.

The Faculty also hosts the Centre of Excellence in Information Technology (CEIT) in partnership with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) and the government of India. CEIT offers students with the following qualifications in the computing field on NQF Level 6:

A warm welcome to all prospective applicants. If you are looking for an exciting and rewarding career in the increasingly high-tech world of the 21st century, engineering is the correct choice and NUST is the right place to be.

The Faculty of Engineering consists of four academic departments and a Material Testing Institute. The Departments are: Civil and Environmental Engineering; Electrical and Computer Engineering; Mechanical and Marine Engineering; Mining and Process Engineering.The Faculty offers National Diploma, Bachelor of Technology (BTech) and Bachelor of Engineering (BEng - professional degree) programmes in various Engineering disciplines. Your first year of study is common to give you an introduction to the general engineering principles before specialising in the different disciplines in subsequent years of study. We take pride in our strategic partnership with industry and partner academic institutions through research, collaboration and consultancy. We are proud of our vibrant team of professionals, whose passion lies in pursuing cutting edge research in the areas of renewable energy, water resources management, manufacturing systems and sustainable mining practices, amongst others.

The Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences at the of Namibia University of Science and Technology is designated to provide professional programmes aimed at producing cadres concerned with improving public health through; disease prevention, emergency medical care, disease diagnosis, patient care and management. As a Faculty, we recognise the importance of producing globally competitive graduates as development challenges increasingly interlink and intertwine beyond geographic and language divides. We ensure graduates champion the development aspirations outlined in NDP 2030 and espouse the values of NUST. Below, I share briefly the Departmental offerings including some of the career opportunities for our graduates.

The Department of Communication offers undergraduate and graduate programmes in Communication, English, Journalism and Media Technology. Graduates from this Department have brought passion and energy to professions such as teaching, journalism and public relations and the media. They serve in public and private sectors while others have ventured into cultural industries as entrepreneurs providing employment opportunities for the youth. Some graduates enrolled in the Master in English and Applied Linguistics programme affirming the need for post-graduate studies in the Faculty.

The Department of Education and Languages offers Technical and Vocational Education collaborating with stakeholders in the education and international development sectors. The TVET sector was identified as critical for driving youth skills development and employment in NDP 2030 and the Harambee Plan of Action. This has given impetus to our internal curriculum development process. Further, the global interest in enhancing and re-positioning TVET education has added to our own vigour to develop vibrant and relevant TVET programmes. The Department of Social Sciences offers a diverse range of programmes cutting across criminal justice, legal studies and public management. The criminal justice programme offers learning opportunities in policing and correctional management. The Department has developed crucial stakeholder partnerships with the Namibia Police Service and the Namibia Correctional Services. We value these partnerships given the challenges

of law enforcement, peace, security and justice at national and global levels. The public management programme has facilitated the development of critical

capabilities at local and regional levels. The Department’s contribution to building capacity for good governance in Namibia and across the continent

cannot be underestimated. As a Faculty, we believe our programmes will contribute to building just and safe communities and meeting the

aspirations of the Africa Union’s Agenda 2063.

To enrich the learning process, the Faculty contributes to scholarship through applied research and instructional development, as well as provides students with the background necessary to pursue advanced studies in business and management related fields. The educational experience in the undergraduate and graduate levels is designed to provide students with the intellectual flexibility to be successful in a dynamic business environment.

In addition, to provide support to employer community through the development of marketable skills in potential employees, the Faculty enhances the competitive capabilities of local businesses by providing continuing education courses and consulting services through the Centre for Enterprise Development (CED) and the individual efforts of faculty. The Faculty has further established collaborative relationship with the public and private sector institutions and industries in developing a rationale and effective system of higher education in Namibia.
