CAPITAL ONE SURVEY FINDS HIGHER INCOME LEVELS MAY MEAN A LESS-THAN-RELAXINGHOLIDAY

Comparedtomen,womenprefertovacationwithafriendoveraspouse.Toronto,ON(July21,2010)–While71%ofCanadianstakeavacationtorelaxanddisconnectfromtheirday-to-daylives,theunfortunaterealityisjustasmanyofthem(72%)experiencesomeformofstressplanningtheirholidays.TheCapitalOneAspireTravelSurvey(www.capitalone.ca)foundthatthree-quartersofwomen(76%)saythey'vefeltsomestresswhenplanningavacationcomparedwithonly68%ofmen.Surprisingly,thesurveyfoundthatstresslevelsappeartogoupforpeopleinhigherincomebrackets.Onaverage,75%ofCanadianswithanannualincomeover$50,000havemorestresswhenplanningavacationthanCanadianswhoearnunder$50,000(69%).

SURVEY FINDS NEW CANADIANS KNOW MORE ABOUT ESTABLISHING CREDIT

SurveyidentifiesfinancialknowledgegapsandasubsetofnewCanadianswhomayfacegreaterfinancialobstacles.Toronto,ON(November16,2010)–AnewsurveycommissionedonbehalfofCreditCanadaandCapitalOneCanadafoundsurprisingdifferencesinfinancialknowledgebetweenCanadianswhowerebornhereandnewcomerstothecountry.Whilethegeneralpopulationhasafinancialliteracyedge,interestingly,theresultsshowthatnewcomersaremorefamiliarwithcreditscoresthanthegeneralpopulation.65percentofnewcomerswhohavebeeninthecountryforfiveyearsorlessand74percentofthosewho'vebeeninthecountryforsixtotenyearsreportthattheyknowenoughtomakegooddecisionsabouttheircreditscore,comparedtojustoverhalf(52percent)ofthegeneralpopulation.Thesurveyresultsalsoshowthat,asindividuals'financialknowledgeandfamiliaritywiththeCanadianbankingsystemimprove,theirperceptionsabouttheirpersonalfinancesimproveaswell.Infact,Canadiannewcomerswhohavebeeninthecountryforsixtotenyearsaresignificantlymorepositiveabouttheirfinancesthanthegeneralpopulation,with75percentofthesenewcomersreportingtheirfinancesaregoodtoverygoodcomparedto69percentofthegeneralpopulation."OursurveyalsoidentifiedaspecificsubsetofnewCanadians–themajorityofwhomarelow-to-moderateincomewomen–whoreporttheirfinancialsituationas"poor"andsaythattheyhavedifficultyaccessingcredit.Thedatashowsthattheyarealsomorefrequentvictimsoffinancialfraud,"saidLaurieCampbell,executivedirector,CreditCanada.

ThefindingsdeterminedthatthisgroupofnewCanadians:Isalmosttwo-thirds(63percent)womenIsreasonablywelleducated,yet40percentliveinhouseholdsthatmakelessthan$25,000peryearHavesignificantlylesstrustinbanksthanothergroupsofnewCanadians,yetmoretrustingovernmentAretwiceaslikelytogetaPayDayloanthanothernewCanadiansSignificantlymorelikelytoindicatetheyhavebeenavictimoffinancialfraud(29percent)"Asacountry,wedoagreatdealtowelcomenewcomersaspartofCanadiansociety,"Campbelladded."Werecognizethattheirsuccesscontributestooursuccess.ButtheresultsofoursurveyshowthatwecouldbedoingabetterjobofreachingouttohelppeopleunderstandthebasicsofCanadianbankingandfinancesothattheycanaccesstheinformationandfinancialtoolstheyneedtosucceed."

Thepollidentifiedanumberofinterestingdifferencesbetweennewcomerswho'vebeeninthecountryforonlyonetofiveyears,thosewho'vebeeninthecountryforsixtotenyearsandthegeneralpopulation:Comparedtonewcomers,Canada'sgeneralpopulationismorelikelytodescribetheCanadianfinancialsystemasconfusing(44percentto26percent).Bycontrast,newcomerstoCanadafindCanada'sfinancialsystemsignificantlymorestable(53percentto44percent)andaccessible(38percentto28percent)ascomparedtoCanada'sgeneralpopulationWhilethevastmajorityofnewCanadianshavecreditcards(85percent)anddebitcards(83percent),only37percenthaveaLineofCreditcomparedto49percentofthegeneralpopulationWhilefamilyisthetopchoiceforbothgroupstoturntoforfinancialadvice(45percentfornewCanadiansand40percentforthegeneralpopulation),newcomersaresignificantlymorelikelytopickfriends(37percentto24percent),theInternet(27percentto17percent),government(12percentto2percent)andbanks(41percentto28percent)Growingup,newCanadiansaretwiceaslikelyasthegeneralpopulationtohavebeentaughtindepthaboutsavingmoney(26percentto13percent)

AbouttheSurveyFromJuly21-27,2010,AngusReidPublicOpinionconductedanonlinesurveyamong531newCanadiansand500Canadianswhoaremembersofthegeneralpopulation.Forthepurposesofthestudy,newCanadiansaredefinedashavinglivedinCanadaforlessthantenyears.Themarginoferror–whichmeasuressamplingvariability–is+/-4.4percent,19timesoutof20forthegeneralpopulationand4.25percentforthepopulationofnewCanadians.Theresultshavebeenstatisticallyweightedaccordingtothemostcurrenteducation,age,genderandregioncensusdatatoensureascloseamatchaspossibletotheactualpopulationofnewCanadians(includingcountryoforigin)aswellaswellasforthegeneralpopulation.Discrepanciesinorbetweentotalsareduetorounding.
