I. The slowing down global economic integration and

synchronized recovery

In 2013, the world economy continued its weak recovery from the

latest international financial crisis. The economic increment of developed

economies and emerging economies was somewhat differentiated. The

sluggish economy and financial turmoil in emerging markets diluted the

joy of the developed countries gained from recovery. The pace of global

economic integration and synchronized recovery had slowed. Among

major economies, the US economy continued to grow thanks to the

manufacturing recovery, the real estate recovery and the shale gas

revolution, and in anticipation of economic recovery, the US government

was the first to withdraw from a five-year-old hyper-normal monetary

policy of quantitative easing. The European economy rose from recession

and its contribution to global growth shifted from negative to positive.

The Japanese economy continued to recover. The “three arrows” of

Abenomics had eased the chronic economic downturn and deflation.

China stood out among emerging economies. This year, the Third Plenary

Session of the 18th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China

sounded the reform horn. The China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone

was officially launched. The dividends of domestic reform were

continuously released, and the opening-up opened a new page. Overall,

the Chinese economy continued to grow steadily and rapidly.

In 2013, the urbanization level of developed countries remained

high, and that of emerging economies continued to increase. The urban

population of China reached 730 million, and the urbanization rate

reached 53.7%, basically reaching the world average level. In addition,

significant technological advances were made around the world in 2013,

such as the 3D printing technology in the United States, graphene

applications in the United Kingdom, fuel cell catalysts in Germany, the

world’s thinnest nanofibers developed in Japan and the new

superconducting materials developed in Russia. The global technology

sector was booming.

Based on the above comparisons, the following three findings can be

drawn:

First, from the intercontinental distribution of top cities in the world,

that is, if you look at the intercontinental distribution of top 20 cities in

Page 24: gucp.cssn.cngucp.cssn.cn/yjcg/xslw/202008/W020200827567026155670.docx · Web viewFrom the regional distribution of the top 20 cities in the world, the largest number of the top 20

the world, it can be found that the influence of Asian cities in the world

has jumped dramatically, while Africa and South America lack the top 20

cities in the world. In terms of the number of top 20 cities in the world,

Asia has the largest number of cities in the list, with a total of 8 cities,

while North America and Europe have 6 cities in the list.

Second, the comparison of urban competitiveness and economic

increment in different continents shows that the urban competitiveness

and economic increment in Africa and Asia are characterized by low

average value and large fluctuation. A comparative analysis of the

economic density of cities in different continents shows that the density

of cities in North America and Europe is relatively high, while the density

of cities in Africa and Asia is low and the internal differentiation is large.

Third, from the comparison of the economic density of typical

countries, the economic density of American cities in developed countries

is increasing, while that of Chinese cities in emerging economies is

increasing. In addition, the economic density of German cities is among

the highest in the world, with 4 German cities in the top 10.
