AMA Principles of Medical Ethics PreambleThe medical profession has long subscribed to a body of ethical statements developed primarily for the ben-

efit of the patient. As a member of this profession, a physician must recognize responsibility to patients first

and foremost, as well as to society, to other health professionals, and to self. The following Principles adopted

by the American Medical Association are not laws, but standards of conduct which define the essentials of

honorable behavior for the physician.

Principles of Medical EthicsI. A physician shall be dedicated to providing competent medical care, with compassion and respect for hu-

man dignity and rights.

II. A physician shall uphold the standards of professionalism, be honest in all professional interactions, and

strive to report physicians deficient in character or competence, or engaging in fraud or deception, to appro-

priate entities.

III. A physician shall respect the law and also recognize a responsibility to seek changes in those require-

ments which are contrary to the best interests of the patient.

IV. A physician shall respect the rights of patients, colleagues, and other health professionals, and shall safe-

guard patient confidences and privacy within the constraints of the law.

V. A physician shall continue to study, apply, and advance scientific knowledge, maintain a commitment to

medical education, make relevant information available to patients, colleagues, and the public, obtain con-

sultation, and use the talents of other health professionals when indicated.

VI. A physician shall, in the provision of appropriate patient care, except in emergencies, be free to choose

whom to serve, with whom to associate, and the environment in which to provide medical care.

VII. A physician shall recognize a responsibility to participate in activities contributing to the improvement of

the community and the betterment of public health.

VIII. While caring for a patient, a physician shall regard responsibility to the patient as paramount.

IX. A physician shall support access to medical care for all people.

Last year, we hosted a fantastic con-ference on healthcare innovations withCedars Sinai Medical Center and this yearwe are excited to host another large ed-

ucational conference, titled “Internation-al Conference on Early Detection” tobring you the most up to date medicaleducation on topics from early detectionof heart disease, lung cancer, breast can-cer, childhood obesity, hypertension, cer-vical cancer, and diabetes.

This year, we also launched a medicalmission to help victims of Typhoon

Yolanda. I wish to thank our volunteersfor their time and to the generous donorsfor their contribution to these medicalmissions. Without cooperation and team-work, we would not have the opportu-nity to bring hope to these victims andtheir families.

and wreaked havoc upon South-east Asia, particularly in the cen-tral Philippine region, leaving6,200 casualties, 2,800 injured,and 1,700 missing. In response to the unbeliev-

able calamity, The Guam Med-ical Association decided to joinin on the reliefefforts by

coordinating medical missionsto areas just south of Manila inCebu and Tacloban, where theimpact of the storm was feltmost."I was the one that initially

said we needed to do a medicalmission since the typhoon hit. Iwas looking for ways to help andtalked to GMA members. We

of illnesses. We had an OB, den-tal, pediatrics and internal medi-cine. We saw hundreds of preg-nant women. Doctors Mike Cruzand Rick Eusebio did a lot of sur-gery. We brought over $30,000worth of medications and sup-plies," said Shieh.

The GMA team battled thetorn coastal cities laden with de-stroyed roads, bridges, buildings,communication facilities and alimited power and water supply

to aid the thousands of individ-uals who required medical as-sistance. "It's nothing that I've ever ex-

perienced before. They didn'treally have fresh running waterand power. We saw thousandsof patients and the biggest chal-lenge was infection control," saidShieh."It wasn't what I expected. I
