Embed Size (px)

DESCRIPTION

Gu Xingqing's account of his journey to Europe during the First World War and his work as an interpreter with the Chinese Labour Corps in Belgium and France. So far this remains the only book-length Chinese eye-witness account ever published. Gu wrote his memoirs during the Japanese occupation of China to encourage his fellow-Chinese. The message is clear: wars are won not only by soldiers and weapons but also by the "labour" behind the front-line of ordinary citizens. This digital version is based on the third edition (Changsha 1938). It has never been reprinted since. No translations are known. A Dutch translation is forthcoming. More at www.clc-eu.net
