Georgia Computes!

• Support: NSF Broadening Participation in Computing

• Goal: to address the entire pipeline by applying research findings and best practices in Georgia– Introduce middle school students to computing

• Girl Scouts, YWCA, summer camps

– Improve computing education in high school• Teacher workshops and summer camps

– Spread best practices to other Georgia Universities• Workshops for undergraduate faculty • Seed additional summer camps

– On-line community to support the entire pipeline

Girl Scout Robot Workshops

• All of the 24 girls at the Nov 2006 workshop said they enjoyed the robot workshop– They loved programming robots through

different courses– Some teams made their robots dance– Some teams played “bumper cars”– The undergrad mentors have fun as well!

• Quote from parent– Thanks for a great workshop. Becca, Jenny

and Brittany really seemed to enjoy it and they now want to start a competition team!

Beginning Programming in Java

• Quotes:– I didn’t like computers and didn’t want to

learn anything about them. My husband made me learn how to do e-mail a few years ago. I was nervous about coming to this workshop. I thought it would be boring, anti-social, and too much math. But, I am having fun!

– This is the best (non college credit) workshop I have ever taken.

Robot Lending Library

• I have mostly girls (20) in each technology class. They were excited about using the robotic kits, and did an excellent job programming them. My boys (7) were outstanding as well. I only had one mixed group (boys and girls). Overall, they worked well together.

• One girl said she hated computers in computer applications, but loved working with the robots in our programming class. She built a robot for the Technology Fair and won and now wants a career in robotics.
