Chris Weems was elected a Director of Area VI, of Arkansas Retired Teachers Association at the Area meeting Wednesday, May 9. The meeting, at Woodland Heights in Little Rock, was attend- ed by about 100 retired teachers in Central Arkansas. Laye Bennett Area VI Director, presided for the opening of the meeting. Helen Holloway, DeValls 'Bluff, and past ARTA President, intro- duced the officers and those taking part in the program. Lloyd Black, Arkansas Retired Teachers System Trustee gave a report of the finances of the state-wide system. Les Upton, State ARTA president, told the members to get the new retirees started in the association as soon as possible. Also, he said “If you know of anyone who is having trouble with the annu- ity or anything else that the State Staff could help them with, to have her or him call the office. Someone will be able to help.” He reminded the members of the State Convention, September 13th. Mary Alice and Matt Hughes gave an update on insurance and Medicare status. Ella Rolfe, Little Rock, a director, presided for giving the door prizes. She also thanked the Saline County Unit for han- dling the registration. Sharon Johnson, Activities Director, gave the list of cruises and tours planned for the year. She stated that the Hawaii cruise and the trip to and in Alaska are filled up. The meeting adjourned with a tour of the building to see the living units, the public areas of the building and the area around the building. Those attending from Prairie County were Sharon Arnold, Carolyn Brakensiek, Thelma Gray, Vi Gresham, Helen Holloway, Vivian Novak, Joyce McNeil, Chris Weems, and June Whiteside. The next local meet- ing will be June 12, in Des Arc. The “volun- teer hours” reports are due at that meeting. Chris Weems elected Director of Area VI ARTA Local members of both the Hickory House and the Equine Adventurers 4-H clubs volunteered their time Friday, May 4 to help support one of the many events held by the Horse Tales Literacy Project (for- merly the Black Stallion Literacy Foundation). The Horse Tales Literacy Project is a nonprofit organization that helps motivate children to enjoy read- ing, specifically Walter Farley's horse centered books. The event was held for first grade school stu- dents and took place at the Camp Robinson Trail Area. It was a shaded environment with various corrals/stations set up to teach children topics like "grooming", "horse nutrition", "tack", etc. There was also a "read- ing barn" with a volun- teer and a book at each horse stall. Each child was either read to or encouraged to read the book to the horse. There was also a "game station" where the chil- dren could work off energy. Games were led by several of our 4- H youth from Prairie County. Our 4-Hers were able to share their knowledge and love of horses to help a remarkable cause. They showed excellent lead- ership skills and disci- pline. They functioned independently, man- aged groups of children successfully, facilitated orderly transitions between stations, and all the while, made each child feel special and listened to. We received multiple posi- tive feedback comments from several of the organization leaders about how well our 4-H members behaved and assisted everyone. We are excited to have been a part of this program and can't wait to help out again! We would also like to encourage anyone in the community who would like to join one of our 4-H clubs to do so. The Hickory House Club meets the first Monday of the month at 6:30 PM at the Hickory Plains Methodist Church and the Equine Adventurers Club, which is a horse club, meets monthly as scheduled either at the fairgrounds in Hazen or at members’ homes. Come join the fun!
