What is GSM?
Why do we need GSM networks?
What is the architecture of a GSM network?
What are the specificities of the GSM physical layer?
How is user’s separation achieved in GSM?
How is a call handled in the radio and core network?
What are GPRS and EDGE?
What are the limitation of GSM?
Audience : This course is suited for operator staff willing to gain
theoretical and practical knowledge on GSM networks.

GSM networks design and
planning
This course will cover how to perform GSM radio network design. It will provide a methodology for cellular planning for GSM and describe the main parameters that need to be considered such as BCCH and BSIC.
This course will also provide the major guidelines for GSM neighbouring, HSN and MAIO planning.
This course can be completed with additional practical exercises on a design software.
Objectives : By the end of this course the trainee should be able to answer
the following questions:
What are the different steps for GSM design ?
How to calculate a GSM link budget ?
How to estimate a GSM cell coverage ?
What parameters are to be planned for GSM?
How to proceed for BCCH and BSIC planning?
What are the considerations for a Neighbor plan?
What are the parameters to plan in case of frequency
hopping?
Audience : This course is suited for operator design teams
Requirements :
Strong knowledge of the GSM air interface is
recommended
Duration :
2 days
3 extra days for practical exercises

GSM tuning and
troubleshooting
This training will cover the main issues that can be measured during a drive test and the main metrics that needs to be analysed in order to perform initial tuning.
This course will also provide a description of the main metrics that can be captured with a drive test tool and the main network anomalies that can be observed during these tests.
This course is illustrated with real examples collected from live networks.
Objectives : By the end of this course the trainee should be able to answer
the following questions:
What are the main metrics that can be measured in
GSM?
What are the main events that can be detected?
How to analyse these results?
What are the causes of the detected events?
What can be done in order to solve any detected issue?
Audience : This course is suited for operator optimisation and
troubleshooting teams
Requirements :
Knowledge of the GSM air interface is recommended
Duration :
2 days
3 extra days for practical exercises

Drive Testing and
measurements
This course will cover the different algorithms available for the estimation of Voice quality in GSM networks.
It will include a description of several algorithms and an explanation of the differences between them.
Objectives : By the end of this course the trainee should be able to answer
the following questions:
How is voice quality evaluated?
What is the interpretation of this evaluation?
What are the possible causes for a low voice quality?
What are the different available measurement
algorithms?
What are the differences between theses algorithms?
Audience : This course is suited for operator optimisation,
troubleshooting and design teams
Requirements :
Knowledge of the GSM air interface is recommended

Voice quality
measurements
This training provides the major guidelines for the different drive testing scenarios and configurations.
It describes the different types of drive tests that need to be carried in a GSM network and the methodology to select the appropriate test protocol
Objectives : By the end of this course the trainee should be able to answer
the following questions:
What are the different drive test scenarios?
When each scenario should be used?
What are the metrics to collect during the drive test?
How to establish the appropriate script for testing?
What are the anomalies that can be detected during
these measurements?
Audience : This course is suited for operator optimisation,
troubleshooting and design teams
Requirements :
Knowledge of the GSM air interface is recommended
