Reflections for 201213

This past year has been a year of exciting and

major changes for Girl Scouts USA and GSEWNI.

First, I want to thank Staci Huffman for steppingup from the 1st Vice Chair position to Chair of theBoard in August 2014, when Don Spencer passedaway. Staci and I would like to reflect on the pastyear and share a few of the many exciting changes,challenges and future opportunities for our counciland all those we serve.

Since June, we have been in the midst of acouncil wide transformation designed to make

us more nimble when providing services togirls, training adult volunteers and providing

real time information to our financial supporters. This was necessary for three important reasons:first, GSEWNIs human resources structure was evaluated and needed to be changed; second, theStrategic Learning Community Collaborative Process identified that a large gap existed in providingadult volunteers and staff with the professional development tools to excel; and third, the total CookieProgram revenue was significantly down in 2013 for the first time in almost six years.

Through this evaluation process, the board of directors worked in partnership with us to recommendand implement many difficult but positive moves to ensure our future sustainability. This reorganizationgave us the opportunity to re-think staffing, customer service, membership, programming, funddevelopment, technology and overall communications. By making the right decisions now, we have set a

course for renewed growth in all categories!

Our board of directors has become more diverse across our geography and in areas of expertise. Wehave representation from more areas in our council and have added two girl positions to the board.The National GSUSA Convention is coming up in November 2014 in Salt Lake City, and our national andalternate delegates are being recommended to the membership by the Board Development committeeat the Annual Meeting in April.

Girl Scout CEOs traveled to Savannah, Georgia in March, the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Lowe, tocontinue a yearlong conversation, as Anna Maria Chavez, GSUSA CEO, likes to say, on how to workat the speed of the girl. Our work towards creating future leaders is awe-inspiring as we mentor thenext generation of females to buildgirls of courage, confidence and character who make the world

a better place.

Community Leadership Event

March 26, 2013: A veteran of five

space flights, Bonnie Dunbar is anaccomplished engineering andscience educator. Dunbar is an M.D.Anderson Professor of Mechanicaland Biomedical Engineering atthe University of Houston, andthe Director of the UniversitysSTEM Center. She has devoted herlife to furthering engineering andscience education. Dr. Dunbarspoke to a packed room abouther experiences as a female

astronaut and her passion forSTEM education. She is a GirlScout alumna and a Sunnyside,Washington native. All but onefemale astronaut that has flownin space is a Girl Scout.

Tri-Cities Team

Advanced to FIRST LEGO

League World Festival

April 24-27, 2013: A team of five

Girl Scouts from the Tri-Citiesadvanced and competed in thechampionship of the FIRST LEGOLeague (FLL) World Festival inSt. Louis, Missouri. The team,named Geek Squad, developedan unique accessibility device forsenior citizens and programmeda Lego robot to navigate a fourby eight foot table of challengesrelated to senior living. The team,made up of four Cadettes and

one Senior, won regional andstate competitions to advanceto St. Louis. The teams Coachalso received one of two CoachAwards presented at the festival.Three teams advanced to the statecompetition in February 2013, andtwo of those teams were chosen asoverall regional champions.

WebkinzGanz2013 Road Trip

May 18, 2013: The Girl ScoutSpokane store was chosen as oneof the premier sites for the Ganz

2013 Road Trip. The store was oneof the top sellers of Webkinz, thewildly popluar stuffed animals thathave a playable online counterpartin Webkinz World. The Ganzvan only stopped in 11 states andGSEWNI felt fortunate to have itstop at the Spokane Girl Scoutstore. More than 100 familiesattended this one day event.

Dons Legacy Will Live On Forever by Pam Lund, CEOFrom the day I met Don, he was excited about Girl Scouts.Our first discussion was regarding the Girl Scout GoldAward. He had been a Boy Scout and wanted to know ifGirl Scouts had a similar award. So over lunch I explainedthe significance of the Girl Scout Gold Award. Shortlythereafter I asked him to join our board to help us getthe word out about Girl Scouting. He joined the GSEWNIboard and six years later he was sworn in as the boardchair. Four months into his term as Chair he succumbedto pancreatic cancer.

Don had a passion for strong governance and processevaluation and loved people who could make a differenceKnowing he was the Chair Elect, he worked side by side withme for several months leading up to his election planningfor future years. Don had worked with several of our stafftaking them through the Six Sigma training for processimprovement. He took pride in the fact that the staff whoparticipated in his first training trained others, and as aresult, changed and streamlined many business processes

Most Successful Year Ever!

September 6-8, 2013: More than100 women attended the annual

Womens Weekend at Camp FourEchoes. The 2013 event was themost successful yet, achievinga record fundraising goal! Onceagain the weather was amazing,guests were pampered and relaxedand GSEWNI achieved a 25%preregistration rate for the 2014weekend! Camp Four Echoes

Celebrated 75 Years

of Summer Resident Camp

August 24-25: More than 34,000

girls have spent their summer daysat Camp Four Echoes since 1938.During that time, the camp hasgrown into one of the most excitingyouth waterfront camps on LakeCoeur dAlene! A committeeof devoted and passionateCamp Four Echoes alumnaeand Spokane Central Lions Clubmembers planned and hostedthe 75thAnniversary celebrationat Camp Four Echoes in August.

More than 100 women, men andchildren attended the two daycelebration. Photos and video ofthe celebration can be found onthe GSEWNI website.

Christmas in July: National

Capitol Christmas Tree Project

Summer 2013: Troops fromthroughout the council hosted

several events during the summerto create tree skirts and ornamentsto adorn the 2013 U.S. CapitolChristmas Tree and severalcompanion trees. The 2013 U.S.Capitol Christmas Tree, known asThe Peoples Tree, was selectedfrom the Colville National Forestin northeast Washington in lateJune. GSEWNI Girl Scout troopspartnered with the Colville NationalForest to provide 27 tree skirts and

hundreds of ornaments for thecompanion trees.

Don often said to the board, staff andto me that Girl Scouts was the bestboard he had ever served on. I tookgreat pride in his statement becausehe had served on many boardsthroughout his career.

Dons legacy with our council will liveon forever. He is missed by all of us butlives on because of his commitmentto Girl Scouts and his deep love for hisfamily, friends and the great outdoors.

Girls Join the Board of Directors

This year we added two girl members to thecouncil board of directors, Nicole AmundsenfromLewiston, Idaho, and Tifany Nelson, from Spokane

Valley, Washington. This is a great opportunity forthese active Girl Scouts to help in the governanceprocess, which will enhance their Girl Scoutingexperience as they gain important leadership anddecision making skills.

Gold Award Recipients on the Rise

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest honora Girl Scout can earn. During the 2012-13 year,GSEWNI awarded six Gold Awards. This prestigiousaward challenges girls to change the worldor at

least our corner of it! By the end of the seven-stepproject, the Girl Scout will have solved a communityproblemnot only in the short term, but for years tocome. Gold Awards are usually presented before therecipient leaves for college, and are acknowledgedby GSUSA and the President of the United States.

Girl Scouts USA CEO Visit to our Council

We are excitedthat GSUSA CEO AnnaMaria Chvez is comingto our council and will bein Spokane April 15-16, 2014.She will be the keynotespeaker at the annualSpokaneCommunityLeadership

Luncheon event April 16.She will also beparticipating in a variety of activitiesdesigned for girls and adults to meether and learn more about the Girl Scout

Movement during her stay.

Rolling Billboards promote Girl Scouts

The council was able to purchase four vehicles totransport girls to and from day and resident camps,program outings and for use by council staff. The

dealerships and loan institutions collaboratedwith the council to wrap three of the vehicles withpromotional and branded messages. People canthelp but smile when they see these vehicles onthe road. Some even honk and wave! Thank youNumerica Credit Union, Dishman-Dodge andWendle Ford Nissan Isuzu for your partnership!

Randall Martin Scout Camp (RMSC)

The Randall Martin Scout Camp is a 3,400 acrewilderness camp, located in the Blue Mountainforest near the McKay River, situated 20 miles

southeast of Pendleton, Oregon. The campis owned and operated through an LLCpartnership with GSEWNI and the BlueMountain Boy Scout Council. The propertycontinues as a working cattle ranch with

an abundance of wildlife, natural flora,and diverse scouting opportunities to

camp, hike and train. The camp is primarilymountainous with forested terrain offering

unique camping, hiking and trainingopportunities. Also, with the installation

of a well this past year the camp nowhas running water for those who usethe property. This is exciting news as

we move forward with plans for morelarge scale scouting adventures. Staytuned for a spring event at the ranch

that will bring scouting families togetherto experience this wonderful camp!
