MGE motors
Product dataGrundfos' standard motor product range consists of two main categories:
• constant-speed motors
• speed controlled motors.
Constant-speed motorsGrundfos constant-speed motors, MG, are totally enclosed, fan-cooled, asynchronous squirrel-cage induc-tion motors designed according to existing IEC, DIN and VDE standards and guidelines.
Single-phase constant-speed motors are available in the frame sizes 71 to 90 and in power sizes up to and inclu-ding 2.2 kW.
• Single-phase MG 71 and MG 80 with run capacitor up to 35 µF incorporated in the terminal box.
• Single-phase MG 90 with run capacitor up to 80 µF incorporated in the terminal box.
Three-phase constant-speed motors are available in the frame sizes 71 to 132 and in power sizes up to and inclu-ding 7.5 kW.
For further information, see Grundfos' data booklet on MG motors.
EFF 1 constant-speed motors
Furthermore, Grundfos can supply constant-speed motors in efficiency class 1 (EFF 1). For further informa-tion, see Grundfos' data booklet on MMG motors.
Note: The rest of this data booklet exclusively describes MGE motors. Further information on MG motors and special versions can be seen in other data booklets.
Speed controlled motorsGrundfos speed controlled motors, MGE, are totally enclosed, fan-cooled, asynchronous squirrel-cage induc-tion motors designed according to existing IEC, DIN and VDE standards and guidelines. MGE motors have built-in frequency converter, motor protection and - as far as single-phase motors are concerned - power factor correction (PFC).
MGE motors have either single-phase or tree-phase mains connection and are available in frame sizes from 71 up to and including 132 and power sizes from 0.37 up to and including 7.5 kW.
Variants
Grundfos MGE motors are available in two variants: Basic and Advanced.
Basic is an MGE motor with:- external start/stop,- external setpoint- signal output.
Advanced is a Basic version fitted with up to two modules:- Input/output module (I/O module)- control panel.
Fig. 1 Schematic drawing of position of modules in terminal box of an Advanced version
Continuous speed control
The speed control is continuous regulation of the speed of the MGE motor through control of frequency and voltage.
Control by changing the frequency is the optimum method as it ensures high efficiency.
Through continuous speed control you can set the motor to operate at any frequency within the range between minimum and maximum frequency.

MGE motorsPFC circuit
Single-phase motors are equipped with a PFC circuit (PFC = Power Factor Correction).
The PFC circuit has the following advantages:
• The motor fulfils EN 61000-3-2 regarding harmonic currents.
• The input current from the mains is sinusoidal andthe power factor is very close to 1, meaning that
- the RMS value of the current is 40 - 50% lower thanfor three-phase motors without PFC circuit,
- cables with lower cross-section can be used,
- smaller back-up fuses are required,
- when several motors supplied by different phasesare connected in parallel, the current in the commonneutral lead will be balanced so that the current inthe neutral will never be higher that the current inone mains phase.
• The motor is less sensitive to variations in the mains voltage (MGE motors yield full power in the entire mains voltage supply range 220 - 240 V, +/–10%, cor-responding to 198 - 264 V).
Type keyThe type key explains the type designation stated on the motor nameplate.
ApplicationsBesides producing MG and MGE motors for Grundfos' own extensive pump range, Grundfos supplies motors for industrial OEM customers who incorporate these motors in a wide variety of machines and plants. MGE motors are used in applications such as
• ventilation systems• hydraulic systems• compressors• machine tools• transport systems.
Special designsIn addition to the motors described in this data booklet, Grundfos produces:
• three-phase motors with other pole numbers, fre-quencies and powers
• motors with special shafts and flanges.
Special designs are available to OEM customers on request.

MGE motors
ConstructionStator housingThe stator housing is made of light-alloy metal (Silumin) In MGE 71 and MGE 80 the bearing end shield in the non-drive end is integrated. In MGE 90 to MGE 132 the bearing end shield is removable.
Drain holesMGE 71 to MGE 132 have drain holes in the drive end as standard. All drain holes are closed with a blanking plug.
If the motor is installed in moist surroundings, the bottom drain hole should be open. This will change the enclosure class of the motor from IP 55 to IP 44.
Water which has entered the stator housing for instance through condensation can run out through the drain holes.
Single-phase MGE 71 and MGE 80
The motors have a drain hole in the drive end. The drain hole is closed with a plug. The flange can be turned 90°.
Fig. 2 Single-phase MGE 71 and MGE 80
Three-phase MGE 90 to MGE 132
B 3 motors have two drain holes, B 5 and B 14 motors have three drain holes. All drain holes are closed with blanking plugs. The flange can be turned 180°.
Fig. 3 Three-phase MGE 90 to MGE 132
ShaftSize of shaft end complies with IEC 72.
The shaft has key, keyway and threaded hole.
The shaft is balanced according to IEC 34-14 (HD 53.14 51), class N, i.e. the balancing was made with a half key in the keyway.
The shaft is normally made of steel 50-2, DIN W.-Nr. 1.0533. The motors are also available with shaft of stain-less steel, DIN W.-Nr. 1.4301 (AISI 304), and acid-resi-stant steel, DIN W.-Nr. 1.4401 (AISI 316).
BearingsThe ball bearings are high-quality bearings. The bearings have C3 clearance and are pre-stressed with a corrugated spring in the non-drive end. This gives longer bearing life and reduced bearing noise. Bearings marked "2Z" are sealed and lubricated for life. "2Z" means that the bearing has a bearing end shield on both sides (double shield). The bearings are lubricated with a high-temperature resistant grease (Klüberquiet BQH 72-102) capable of withstanding temperatures up to 180°C.

Operating conditionsTemperatureOperation: –20°C to +40°C.Storage, transport: –30°C to +60°C.
If the ambient temperature is above 40°C, or if the motor is installed more than 1,000 m above sea level, the rated motor load must be reduced, see figure 8.
Fig. 10 Reduction of rated motor load
Air humidityMaximum air humidity: 95%.
CoolingThe motor is cooled according to IEC 34-6, IC 0141, i.e. surface cooled by means of a fan mounted on the motor shaft (fan-cooled).
Fig. 11 Surface cooling by means of an external, shaft mounted fan (fan-cooled)
Do the following to ensure cooling of motor and electronics:
• Place the motor in such a way that cooling is sufficient.
• Temperature of the cooling air must not exceed 40°C.
• Keep cooling fins, holes in the fan cover and fan blade clean.
If installed outdoors the motor must be covered to avoid condensation on the electronic components, see figure 10.
Fig. 12 Examples of covers
NoiseGrundfos motors are low-noise motors with noise values below the maximum values stipulated in IEC 34-9.
Sound pressure level 50 Hz
Single-phase: max. 70 dB(A).Three-phase: see “Electrical data” on page 32.
Sound pressure level 60 Hz
Three-phase: see “Electrical data” on page 32.
The sound pressure level is measured 1 m from the surface of the motor with 20 mPa as reference sound pressure.
The measurement is made according to ISO 3743 or ISO 9614, and the sound pressure level is calculated on the basis of sound power measurements according to ISO 11203.
The values stated are maximum values incl. the upper tolerance of 3 dB according to ISO 4871.
This guiding curve indicates how much the noise is reduced when you reduce the speed of the MGE motor.
