Wayne Grudem's Systematic Theology, Zondervan, 1994 provides the basis for the materials for this 1

course for the men. Direct quotations from these materials as well as other sources are footnoted. The Thesis paragraph of each section, the outlines of each doctrine, and anything in direct quotes are right from the materials and are not normally footnoted but shown with the following marking: "(G5)". This means that the quote is from Grudem's book page 5.Systematic Theology Survey FEFC BIC 2nd Saturdays2

Introduction - Why would we want doctrine? What is systematic theology? • "It is any study that answers the question, 'What does the whole Bible teach us

today?' about any given topic. This definition indicates that systematic theology involves collecting and understanding all the relevant passages in the Bible on various topics and then summarizing their teachings clearly so that we know what to believe about each topic" (G21).

Why study theology? 1. Jesus commands it - evangelism includes teaching ALL that Christ taught. Matt 28:19-20 2. For our joy and the benefits to our lives. a. Helps us overcome wrong ideas; b. Helps us to be able to make better decisions on new questions arising about doctrine; c. Helps us grow as Christians (2 Cor 3:17-18 - we become what we behold; we most clearly behold the glory of God in the face of Christ (2 Cor 4:1-6) and that is what the HS uses to make us like Him; d. These words are our life (Deut 32:46-47b) and our joy (Deut 6:5, Ps 139:17, Ps 19:8, 119:8, 14, 103, 111 and 119:162). May God make His word this joy to us! 3. The Imperatives (the commands of Scripture) are grounded in the indicative (the facts, i.e. who we ARE in Christ): The present reality of what and who believers are in Christ becomes the basis for godly and holy living. A few texts that illustrate this dynamic are Rom 6:5-14; Col 3:1-11; Titus 2:11-14. Moreover, godly living comes from a true knowledge of God and Christ (2 Pet 1:1-15). 4. Is our theology Biblical? Everyone has doctrine, that is why we make the choices in life we make. The question is not do we want doctrine. We have it. The question is, "Is our doctrine Biblical?"

What is the role of the teacher and of the listener during this study? Role of the teacher: 1. How to read the map? Introduce categories of thinking where we can organize and understand God's revelation of Himself in his word; have a place holder or outline to have other things fit in later as we mature and hear other teaching - where does it fit / go? 2. See these doctrines in the verses: this is not a philosophy course. We must be diligent to see these truths not as abstract thoughts but right from the text of God's inspired Scriptures. 3. Lead to Christ: all the Scripture is about Christ and leads up to Him and is fulfilled in Him. Role of the listener: 1. Know God: long for Him is his word ( 1 Pet 2:1); salvation is knowing God ( Jn 17:3) 2. Learn how to read the "map" 3. Tell these truths to others: start with your wife (Eph 5:___ wash her in the word) and kids (Eph 6:2 fathers train them in the fear of the Lord) and to the church (___)

The "verse-veto": in asking questions, make sure that you have a verse or passage you reference and not just man's philosophy.

No pain, no gain": we think it absurd to say that I am going to get bigger arms by watching TV. exhortation to less TV and more "blood, sweat, and tears" by God's grace ( 1 Cor 15:10) and for his glory.

I. The Doctrine of the Word of God Intro: What are the different forms of the Word of God? 1. as a person: Jesus Christ (John 1:1-5), Heb 1:1-2 God has spoken THROUGH His son). 2. as speech by God: His decrees from His mouth (Ps. 33:6), His personal address (Matt 3:17), His word through human lips (Jer 1:9, 1:7), and His words in written form (Is 30:8).

The Cannon of Scripture: What belongs in the Bible and what does not belong? • Old testament canon - writings of Moses deposited in to the ark of the covenant

(Deut 31:24-26), and written down through Israel's history (1 Sam 10:25), 1 Chron 29:29, Jer 30:2)

• New Testament canon – The 27 books that make up the New Testament were never declared by men as the Word of God. These books were already the Word of God. Men simply came to recognize them as inspired. The official New Testament canon was formed in 387 AD at the Council of Carthage primarily under the influence of Athanasius.

The Four Characteristics of Scripture I. Authority - "How do we know that the Bible is God's Word? All the words in Scripture are God's words in such a way that to disbelieve or disobey any word of Scripture is to disbelieve or disobey God" (G p.73). (Scripture is authoritative because its source is God, 2 Pet 1:20-21) II. Clarity - "Can only Bible scholars understand the Bible rightly? No, as Spurgeon has said, Scripture is shallow enough for a child to wade in and deep enough to drown an elephant. (Acts 17:11; Bereans understood Scripture and tested Paul; Scripture is clear, but requires hard work when interpreting it; 2 Pet 3:15-16) III. Necessity - "For what purpose is the Bible necessary? How much can people know about God without the Bible? The Bible is necessary for knowing the gospel, for maintaining spiritual life, and for knowing God's will, but is not necessary for knowing that God exists or for knowing something about God's character and moral laws" (G116). Rom 1:18-32 says that God has revealed Himself to all people through nature, conscience, and the lesson book of Israel. It is enough to justly damn every non-believer, but it is not enough to save them - only the hearing of the gospel of Jesus Christ saves people. (Rom 10:9-10; 2 Tim 3:14-15) IV. Sufficiency - "Is the Bible enough for knowing what God wants us to think or do? Scripture contained all the words of God he intended his people to have at each stage of redemptive history, and that it now contains all the words of God we need for salvation, for trusting him perfectly, and for obeying him perfectly" (G127). (2 Tim 3:16-17)

The Inerrancy of Scripture: Are there any errors in the Bible? "Scripture in the original manuscripts does not affirm anything that is contrary to fact" (G90). Four implications if we do not believe the Bible is Inerrant (G100): Systematic Theology Survey FEFC BIC 2nd Saturdays5

Page 6: Grudem - Systematic Theology Notes · Systematic Theology Purpose: to provide the men of our church a one page summary of twelve of the main doctrines of the faith so as to be better

1. We are confronted with a serious moral problem: we are saying that God is intentionally lying in parts of Scripture since it is "God breathed" 2 Tim 3:15; Eph 5:1 calls us to imitate God. Then are we supposed to lie in small maters also? No.

2. Is any of it true? If we believe there are some errors in the Bible and some falsehoods, then can we then believe God on any of the promises in the Bible? Which ones are true then?

3. We make our human minds a higher standard of truth than God's Word. 4. If we deny inerrancy, then we must also say that the Bible is wrong not only on

minor details but in some of its doctrines as well.

Application: 1. We must not separate the idea of Word and Spirit. The Spirit does not create new meanings as we read the text, but brings to bear the meaning of the text and its application in the context of the church. 2. In order to properly understand the text, we must have a full commitment to the authority of the text.

Discussion Questions: 1. In what ways has this study changed your understanding of what systematic theology is? What was your attitude toward the study before the class, and what is it now? 2. If you thought there were some small errors affirmed by Scripture, how do you think that would affect the way you read Scripture? Would it affect your concern for truthfulness in everyday conversations at work, at home, with friends? 3. Read Eph 1:15-19 and pray this passage as a group that God would open our eyes to the beauty of Him in His Word. That He would make this study of basic Christian doctrine in 2009 a time of spiritual growth and deeper fellowship with him, and a time in which you understand and apply the teachings of Scripture rightly.

II. The Doctrine of God (Part 1) A. Does God exist, and can we know Him? 1. Man's conscience, nature, and Scripture give evidence that God exists: Rom 1:18-21, 25, Ps 19:1-2 2. "Only God can overcome our sin and enable us to be persuaded of His existence" and to know him personally in salvation (G144): 2 Cor 4:4 we have been blinded to God's existence by Satan and need our eyes opened; Matt 11:27 "No one knows the Father except the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him." 3. We can never fully know and understand God YET we can truly know him: Though God is incomprehensible we can know God though not exhaustively about him - Ps 145:3, 147:5, Rom 11:33; we know him, not just facts about him: 1 John 2:13, Jer 9:23-24 B. The Incommunicable Attributes of God (those qualities that are unique to God and not to man) 1. Independence: "God does not need us or the rest of creation for anything, yet we and the rest of creation can glorify him and bring him joy" (G160); God did not create the world because he was lonely (Acts 17:24-25, Job 41:11) but to reflect his glory which brings him glory (Zeph. 3:17-18, Eph 1:11ff) 2. Unchangeableness (immutability): "God is unchanging in his being, perfections, purposes, and promises, yet God does act and feel emotions, and he acts and feels differently in response to different situations" (G163); Is. 46:9-11; Does God sometimes change his mind? Examples: Is 38:1-6, Jonah 3:4, 10, Gen 6:6, 1 Sam. 15:10, Ex 32:9-14 Moses prays for the people and God does not destroy them. As the situation changes, God responds differently (part 2 of definition) and will always ultimately achieve his one stated, good purpose; 1 Sam 15:29, 12:22-God loves his glory 3. Eternity: "God has no beginning, end, or succession of moments in his own being, and he sees all time equally vividly, yet God sees events in time and acts in time" (G168); Job 36:26; 2 Pet 3:8 he is over ALL of time; Gal 4:4-5 he acts IN time; Rev. 22:2 we will always exists in time - eternal duration 4. Omnipresence: "God does not have size or spatial dimensions and is present at every point of space with his whole being, yet God acts differently in different places" (G173); Ps 139:7-10 he is everywhere; 1 Kings 8:27 no spatial limitations; Ps 16:11 he is present to bless (and punish and sustain) 5. Unity: "God is not divided into parts, yet we see different attributes of God emphasized at different times" (G177); Ex 34:6-7, God's being is not a collection of his attributes like a recipe (i.e. one part independence, two parts wisdom, one and a half part mercy, etc.) nor is are these an addition to his true being (i.e. in addition to being God he is also wise). "God's whole being includes all of his attributes: he is entirely loving, entirely merciful, entirely just, and so forth" (G178).

1. Spirituality: "God exists as a being that is not made of any matter, has no parts or dimensions, is unable to be perceived by our bodily senses, and is more excellent than any other kind of existence" (G187/8); Ex 20:4-6 God is like nothing else; we have spirits: Jn 4:23-24; we have the HS: Rom. 8:16 2. Invisibility: "God's total essence, all of his spiritual being, will never be able to be seen by us, yet God still shows himself to us through visible, created things" (G188); no one has seen God: Jn 1:18; Moses could not see all of God: Ex 33:20; we have seen God in Christ: Jn 14:9; somehow we will see God in heaven: Rev 22:3-4, 1 Jn 3:2 Section 2: Attributes describing God's MENTAL ATRIBUTES 3. Knowledge (Omniscience): "God fully knows himself and all things actual ( Isa. 46:9-10, Isa 42:8-9) and possible ( Matt 11:21) in one simple and eternal act" (G190); he knows himself: 1 Jn 1:5 - light means moral purity and knowledge; he never has to calculate the grains of sand and his knowledge does not grow: 2 Pet 3:8 4. Wisdom: "God always chooses the best goals and the best means to those goals...[his decisions] always will bring about the best results (from God's ultimate perspective), and they will bring about those results through the best possible means" (G193); God is wise: Rom 16:27, Job 9:4; he orchestrates our lives wisely for good and conforms us to his Son's image: Rom 8:28-29 Application & Discussion Questions: 1. "Do you really believe that God is working wisely today in your life? In the world? If you find this difficult to believe at times, what might you do to change your attitude" (G207)? 2. Do you believe that we were made to worship? Why else do we stand and behold things like the Grand Canyon, sunsets, the Northern Lights, etc.? How does God's revelation of Himself, his essence and character qualities that we have studied today relate to worship? 3. John Piper has said that "we exist to glorify God BY enjoying him forever." HOW 2

do we enjoy God? How do we delight in God (Ps 37:5)?

III. The Doctrine of God (Part 2) C. The Communicable Attributes of God (continued) 5. Truthfulness (faithfulness): "He is the true God ( Jer 10:10-11), and that all his knowledge and words are both true and the final standard of truth" (G195); he keeps his promises: Deut 32:4, Num 23:19; Section 3: Attributes describing God's MORAL ATRIBUTES 6. Goodness: "God is the final standard of good ( Luke 18:19, Ps 100:5), and that all that God is and does is worthy of approval" (G197); God is the source of all good in the world: James 1:17; we are to do good, reflect the glory of his goodness: Gal 6:10; 7. Love: "God eternally gives of himself to others" (G198) ; God is love: 1 John 4:8; love in the trinity: John 17:24; love of sinners: Gal 2:20; we are to first love God, then people as he does: Matt 22:37-38 8. Mercy, Grace, Patience (examples of God's goodness: Ex 34:6): "God's mercy means God's goodness toward those in misery and distress ( 2 Sam 24:14). God's grace means God's goodness toward those who deserve only punishment ( Rom 3:23-24). God's patience means God's goodness in withholding of punishment toward those who sin over a period of time ( Rom 2:4)" (G200-1). 9. Holiness: "He is separated from sin ( Isa 6:3), and devoted to seeking his own honor" (G201); we are to be holy as God is holy: 1 Pet 1:6; without holiness we will not see God: Heb 12:10-14) 10. Peace (order): "In God's being and in his actions he is separate from all confusion and disorder ( 1 Cor 14:33), yet he is continually active in innumerable well-ordered, fully controlled, simultaneous actions ( Ps 121:4, Jn 5:7)" (G203); we are to live in peace and self control by the Holy Spirit: Gal 5:23 11. Righteousness, Justice: "God always acts in accordance with what is right and is himself the final standard of what is right ( Deut 32:4)" (G203); his laws are right: Ps 19:8; what he does IS right: Job 40:1-4, Rom 9:20-21; 12. Jealousy: "God continually seeks to protect his own honor ( Ex 34:14)" (G205); God does not share his glory: Isa 48:11; in pride/sin we are jealous for our honor so how can God be jealous of his? If God loved anything else other than his own glory he would be an idolater: 1 Cor 4:7, Rev 4:11 13. Wrath: "He intensely hates all sin ( Deut 9:7-8)" (G206); wrath is not solely an Old Testament concept: John 3:36, Rom 1:18; believers are free from God's wrath: Eph 2:3, 1 Thess. 1:10)

D. God's Providence: If God controls all things, how can our actions have real meaning? What are the decrees of God? • "God is continually involved with all created things in such a way that he 1. keeps

them existing and maintaining the properties with which he created them; 2. cooperates with created things in every action, directing their distinctive properties to cause them to act as they do; and 3. directs them to fulfill his purposes" (G315);

Systematic Theology Survey FEFC BIC 2nd Saturdays9

Page 10: Grudem - Systematic Theology Notes · Systematic Theology Purpose: to provide the men of our church a one page summary of twelve of the main doctrines of the faith so as to be better

• 1. Preservation: "God keeps all created things existing and maintaining the properties with which he created them" (G316); Heb 1:3, Col 1:17

• 2. Concurrence: "God directs, and works through the distinctive properties of each created thing, so that these things themselves bring about the results that we see" " (G319); Eph 1:11, Ps 135:6-7, Prov 16:33; "primary cause" is God causes the grass to grow: Ps 104:4; "secondary cause" is God uses rain and soil to do what he made them to do; Job 1:12, 15, 22; over evil: "Scripture nowhere shows God as directly doing anything evil, but rather as bringing about evil deeds through the willing actions of moral creatures...making willing, responsible choices, choices that have real and eternal results, and for which we are held accountable... Moreover, Scripture never blames God for evil or shows god as taking pleasure in evil" (G321, 323); Ps 76:10, Prov 16:4, examples: Joseph's brothers hated him: Gen 37:4, 20; they meant it for evil but God meant it for good: Gen 50:20; Pharaoh's heart was hardened by God: Ex 4:21, 7:3 before he hardened it: Ex 8:15; David's census: 2 Sam 24:1, 10, 12-17; Christ's death: Acts 2:23, 4:28; free will? "Scripture nowhere says that we are 'free' in the sense of being outside of God's control or of being able to make decisions that are not caused by anything... Nor does it say we are 'free' in the sense of being able to do right on our own apart from God's power" (G331). We will always do what we want to do and apart from God's intervening, sovereign grace, we will always want our own glory instead of his: Rom 1:21-23.

• 3. Government: "God has a purpose in all that he does in the world and he providentially govern or directs all things in order that they accomplish his purposes" (G331); Ps 103:19, Dan 4:35; Moral/Revealed will of God ( 2 Tim 2:22) and his Providential Government/Hidden will ( Acts 2:23);

• The decrees of God: "the eternal plans of God whereby, before the creation of the world, he determined to bring about everything that happens" (G332); God is not making this up as we go along: Eph 1:4, Jude 4, Eph 2:10

• The importance of our actions ("means"): "God works through human actions in his providential management of the world" (G333); we are responsible for our actions and cannot blame God for our sin like Adam tries to: Gen 3:12, Rom 9:19-20; prayer is God's means to bring about real change: James 4:2, John 16:24; act vigorously BECAUSE God acts: 2 Sam 10:12, Acts 18:9-10, Acts 27:31

Application & Discussion Questions: 1. How can we live lives of thankfulness knowing there is no luck or chance? 2. What attribute of God are you going to share with your wife today? What Scriptures off the sheet are you going to use along with the explanation?

Systematic Theology Survey FEFC BIC 2nd Saturdays10

Page 11: Grudem - Systematic Theology Notes · Systematic Theology Purpose: to provide the men of our church a one page summary of twelve of the main doctrines of the faith so as to be better

IV. The Doctrine of God (Part 3) E. Creation: why, how, and when did God create the universe? • "God created the entire universe out of nothing; it was originally very good; and

he created it to glorify himself" (G262); ex nihilo - out of nothing; Gen 1:1, Ps 33:6, 9; John 1:3; God created man in a special and personal way (not evolution): Gen 2:7, 21-23; God is both transcendent over AND immanent in His creation - "distinct from yet remaining in": Mark 4:41, Job 12:10; God created the universe out of an overflow in the trinity to reflect his glory, not supply a need of his: Ps 19:1-2, Isa 43:7; Rev 4:11; Creation was good: Gen 1:4, 10, and is to still be enjoyed: 1 Tim 4:1-3; teaching kids: "Why did God create the world? to show how special He is."

F. Prayer: How can we pray effectively to this All-wise, All-powerful God? • Why does God want us to pray? 1. Prayer expresses our trust and dependence

upon God and is a means whereby our trust in him can increase: Mark 14:36, Matt 6:8, Luke 11:9-12; 2. Prayer brings us into deeper love and fellowship with God: John 14:6; 3. Prayer advances the work of Christ's Kingdom.

• Christ the Mediator: "The only prayers that he has promised to 'hear' in the sense of listening with a sympathetic ear and undertaking to answer when they are made according to his will, are the prayers of Christians offered through the one mediator, Jesus Christ: Jon 14:6" (G378); the OT foreshadowed this Mediator and now in Christ, we are all priests praying in God's presence: Ex 29:4, 21, Heb 10:22, 1 Peter 2:9

• Considerations for effective prayer: 1. Praying in Jesus' name is not a magic formula but is on his authorization (Acts 3:6) and consistent with His character and God's will: 1 John 5:14-15, James 1:5-8; 2. Pray with faith and no doubting: James 1:6; 3. Pray and live in obedience and holiness: 1 Peter 3:7, 12, Prov 28:9; 4. Confess our sin and forgive others: Ps 19:12, Matt 6:14-15; 5. Continue in prayer: 2 Cor 12:8 but not empty repetition - Matt 6:7; 6. Trust God though unanswered prayers occur: Rev 6:10-11; 2 Cor 12:8-9; Rom 8:28, 1 Pet 5:7;

• In light of God's Providence, does prayer change God's mind? Num 23:19; prayer is God's ordained means to accomplish His will, changing people's wills: Rom 15:30-31, Acts 21:30, 17; practically - learn to pray like Paul 3

• Glorifying God by not serving Him, but by being served by Him: Acts 17:24-25; He aims to get the glory as the Giver (us as receiver): Is 64:4, 1 Pet 3:15; approach prayer as a wartime walkie-talkie vs. domestic intercom: John 16:24 ; in the pattern 4

of George Mueller, pray through scripture (i.e. the Psalms) in praise, thanksgiving, supplication, and confession (PTSC), making your number one aim each day for your heart to be happy in God before anything else;

D.A. Carson, Spiritual Reformation, Baker Books, 1992; Dr. Carson teaches through some of Paul's 3

prayers as to how we can pray for what he prays for: 2 Thes 1:3-12; Eph 1:15-23, Rom 15:14-33, etc.

John Piper, Desiring God, p 177, et al; also the Mueller example is from Piper's autobiography of 4

G. Angels, Satan, and Demons: Why did God create them? How should we think of spiritual warfare? • "Angels are created, spiritual beings with moral judgment and high intelligence, but

without physical bodies" (G397); 1. they help us: Heb 1:14; 2. they are not seen unless God shows them: Num 22:31; 3; we will judge them: 1 Cor 6:3; 4. they are made for Christ: Col 1:16; 5. they worship God: Rev 4:11; 6. watch their doctrine Gal 1:8;

• "Demons are evil angels who sinned against God and who now continually work evil in the world" (G412); "not all evil and sin is from Satan and demons, but some is" (G420); Paul did not tell the Corinthian church to rebuke a spirit of dissension or incest but to "agree" and "offer church discipline": 1 Cor 1:10, 1 Cor. 5:1-5

H . Miracles? What are miracles, and can they happen today? • "A miracle is a less common kind of God's activity in which he arouses people's

awe and wonder and bears witness to himself" (G355): Ex 4:2-8 miracles show that God sent Moses; Ex 7:12 miracles show that Israel is worshipping the One true God; regeneration is a miracle: Jer 13:23, 17:9; answers to prayers are miracles in the sense of this definition, giving praise to God, His Sovereignty and Providence;

• Miracles served to authenticate the message of the gospel: John 3:2, Matt 12:28, Heb 2:4, p357;"Since Scripture is sufficient [since it is inspired, inerrant, and infallible], the ongoing manifestations of the 'sign gifts' (tongues, prophecy, healing) are thus no longer needed and ceased with the Apostles (Ps 19:7-9, 119:9, 1 Thes 2:13; 2 Thes 3:14, 2 Tim 3:16-17; Titus 1:2, 2 Pet 1:3)." Signs have been used 5

by God to authenticate a message from him; since God has spoken to us through THE pinnacle, namely his own son (Heb 1:1-2), and no additional revelation beyond this pinnacle is required, therefore signs are no longer needed.

Application & Discussion Questions: 1. What is the miracle in Mark 4:35-41? What odd part of the story do the disciples have fear? What is Jesus teaching them about Him as the Creator? 2. Do we pray with a broken, bankrupt dependence as a sick patient to the wise and loving Doctor? This glorifies God and brings us joy. Pray through Psalm 100.

V. The Doctrine of Man A. The Creation of Man: Why did God create us? • "God did not need to create man [i.e. because he was lonely], yet He created us

for His own glory" (G440): Isa 43:7; our purpose, then, is to glorify God BY enjoying Him: Ps 16:11, John 10:10; He rejoices in us glorifying Him: Zeph 3:17;

• Created in the "image of God": this "means that man is like God and represents God" (G442); similar but not identical: Gen 1:26; after the fall, the image is distorted but not lost: Gen 9:6, James 3:9; redemption in Christ is a progressive recovering of more of God's image (G445): Col 3:10; complete recovery of God' image at Christ's return: Rom 8:29, 1 Cor 15:49;

• Dignity as image bearers: "If we ever deny our unique status in creation as God's only image-bearers, we will soon begin to depreciate the value of human life, will tend to see humans as merely a higher form of animal, and will begin to treat others as such. We will also lose much of our sense of meaning in life" (G450).

B. Man as Male & Female: distinct roles but equal in value • "The creation of man as male and female shows God's image in [3 ways]:" (G454) • 1. harmonious interpersonal relationships - "reflects to some degree the plurality of

persons [and fellowship] within the Trinity" (G455): Gen 1:26-27, John 17:5, 24; • 2. equality of personhood and importance - different roles and equal in value; Gen

5:1-2, Gal 3:27-28; both given gifts: Acts 2:17-18 (quotes Joel 2:28-29); complementary differences [of men and women] together reflecting the beauty of God's character" (G456).

• 3. same in value yet different in role - reflects the Trinity: God the Father planned our redemption (Eph 1:4-5), the Son obeyed and purchased our redemption (Luke 22:42), and the Spirit empowers believers (John 16:7); male headship: Adam was created first (Gen 2:7); Eve was created as a helper for Adam (Gen 2:18); the serpent came to Eve first to usurp Adam's leadership (Gen 3:1); God speaks first to Adam after the fall (Gen 3:9); the curse does not introduce new role but distorts previous roles (Gen 3:18-19, work will be tiresome, child birthing now painful);

C. Essential Nature of Man: Body, Soul/Spirit (is soul and spirit two different things?) • "Adam is a unified person with body and soul living and acting together (Gen

2:7)...Scripture uses 'soul' and 'spirit' interchangeably (Luke 1:46-47, Luke 12:20 vs. Luke 23:46)...we worship him as whole persons. In conclusion, Scripture does not seem to support any distinction between soul and spirit. There does not seem to be a satisfactory answer to the questions that we may address to a trichotomist, 'What can the spirit do that the soul cannot do?" (G473, 477); avoid Gnosticism;

D. Sin: What is sin? Do we inherit a sinful nature and guilt from Adam? • Sin defined: Sin is any failure to conform to the moral law of God in act, attitude,

or nature. It is not defined merely as "selfishness" but rather an affront to God. • Inherited Sin: "we sin because we are sinners, rather than we are sinners because

we sin"; Total depravity - we received two things from Adam: 1. Inherited guilt (legal guilt): we are counted guilty because of Adam's sin

(Rom 5:12-14) - "the fact that people still died [from Adam to Moses before the Law was given] is very good proof that God counted people guilty on the basis of Adam's sin" (G494); is this unfair? No, Paul's argument in Rom 5 is "then we should also think it is unfair for us to be represented by Christ and to have his righteousness imputed to us by God" (G495).

2. Inherited corruption: we are disposed to sin from birth (Ps 58:3, 51:1-5); in our natures we totally lack spiritual good before God (Titus 1:15, Jer 17:9) - "In these passages Scripture is not denying that unbelievers can do good in

Systematic Theology Survey FEFC BIC 2nd Saturdays13

Page 14: Grudem - Systematic Theology Notes · Systematic Theology Purpose: to provide the men of our church a one page summary of twelve of the main doctrines of the faith so as to be better

human society in some senses. But it is denying that they can do any spiritual good or be good in terms of a relationship with God" (G497); in our actions we are totally unable to do spiritual good before God (Rom 8:7-8, John 15:5, Heb 11:6, Eph 2:1-2, John 8:34, Is 64:6, 1 Cor 2:14, John 6:44) - "because of their inability to do good and to escape from their fundamental rebellion against God and their fundamental preference for sin, unbelievers do not have freedom in the most important sense of freedom - that is, the freedom to do right, and to do what is pleasing to God" (G498). Then who can be saved? Matt 19:23-26 - hope in God to change natures and hearts!

• Punishment of Sin: "if he did not punish sin he would not be a righteous God, and there would be no ultimate justice in the universe. But when sin is punished, God is showing himself to be a righteous judge over all, and justice is being done in his universe" (G510). Rom 3:25-26; all sin dealt with either in hell or on the cross;

Application & Discussion Questions: 1. Do you feel it is unfair to be counted sinful in Adam? How does this cause us to have joy, delight, and thankfulness in our salvation? (outside imputation of both) 2. Do you believe that sin has a hardening, anesthetizing effect? How does the Spirit help believers in diligent fight against sin, and what does Rom 8:13 say happens if we do not fight our sin by the Spirit? 3. Have you thought of family relationships as reflecting something of the roles in the Trinity as discussed? What can you do today and this week by God's grace to fulfill your three-fold role as a man as prophet (teacher of God's Word), priest (prayer for others), and king (servant leader)?

VI. The Doctrine of Christ I. The Person of Christ: How is Jesus fully God and fully man, yet one person? Defined: "Jesus Christ was fully God and fully man in one person, and will be so forever" (G529). A. The Humanity of Christ: 1. Virgin birth - three important observations: a. salvation must come from the Lord (Gal 4:4-5); b. unites full deity AND full humanity in one person (John 3:16); c. Christ's true humanity without inherited sin (Luke 1:35). 2. Human weakness and limitations: a. human body like ours, i.e. tired out and hungry (John 4:6, Matt 4:2); b. mind that increased in wisdom (Luke 2:52); c. soul and emotions (John 12:27, 13:21); d. learned obedience (Heb 5:8)- "his ability to obey under more and more difficult circumstances, increased. We might say that his 'moral backbone' was strengthened by more and more difficult exercise" (G534). 3. Why was Jesus' full humanity necessary? a. representative obedience - where Adam had failed, Christ succeeds (Rom 5:18-19); b. to be the One Mediator between God and Man (1 Tim 2:5); c. to be our example and pattern in life (1 John 2:6); d. therefore, we have a sympathetic high priest who helps us (Heb 4:15-16); B. The Deity of Christ: 1. Direct claims: a. the word 'God' (theos) used of Christ (John 1:1); b. the word 'Lord' (Kyrios) used of Christ - 'Yahweh' translated to 'Kyrios' 6,814 times in Greek OT and Christ was 'Kyrios' (Luke 2:11); c. Jesus said he is "I am" (John 8:57-58, Ex 3:14); 2. Evidence that Jesus was God: demonstrated omnipotence (Matt 8:27) and omniscience (Mark 2:8); 3. What did Jesus "empty" of himself in Phil 2:7? "The emptying includes changes of role and status, not essential attributes or nature" (G550); He was fully divine (Col 1:19, 2:9); 4. Why was Jesus' deity necessary? "only someone who is infinite God could bear the full penalty for all the sins of all those who would believe in Him" (G553) - sin against an infinite holy God requires an infinite sacrifice; C. The Incarnation: Deity and Humanity in the ONE person of Christ 1. The Chalcedonian definition (451 A.D.): "hypostatic union: the union of Christ's human and divine natures in one being - two distinct natures in Christ that retain their own properties yet remain together in one person" (G558); draw graphic on board (p558); "Remaining what he was, he became what he was not" (G563); "If someone asks whether Jesus, when he was asleep in the boat...AND whether all things in the universe were being held together by him at that time (Col. 1:17), the answer must be 'yes'"(G559). II. The Atonement: Was it necessary for Christ to die? Did Christ's entire earthly life earn any saving benefits for us? What is the cause and nature of the atonement. Defined: "The atonement is the work Christ did in his life and death to earn our salvation" (G568). A. The Cause of the atonement: God's love and justice (John 3:16, Gal 2:20, Rom 3:25 propitiation)

Systematic Theology Survey FEFC BIC 2nd Saturdays15

Page 16: Grudem - Systematic Theology Notes · Systematic Theology Purpose: to provide the men of our church a one page summary of twelve of the main doctrines of the faith so as to be better

B. The Necessity of the atonement: "consequent absolute necessity" - God did not have to save man and did not save the angels who fell (2 Pet 2:4); "as a 'consequence' of God's decision to save some human beings, the atonement was absolutely necessary" (G569). C. The Nature of the atonement: 1. Christ's active obedience - "he obeyed the requirements of the law in our place and was perfectly obedient to the will of God the Father as our representative" (Phil 3:9); 2. Christ's passive obedience - "suffering for us, in which he took the penalty due for our sins and as a result died for our sins" (Is 53:3, Mark 15:24) (G570); 3. Who required Christ to pay the penalty for our sins? answer: God the Father (2 Cor 5:21, Is 53:10); 4. Four terms to show Christ's death met our four needs: a. Sacrifice - taking our penalty (Heb 9:26); b. Propitiation - removing God's just wrath against us (1 Jn 4:10); c. Reconciliation - fellowship with God (2 Cor 5:18-19); d. Redemption: released from sin's bondage and ransomed (Mark 10:45); D. The extent of the atonement: Key question: "When Christ died on the cross, did he pay for the sins of the entire human race or only for the sins of those who he knew would ultimately be saved" (G594)? - rephrased: "Did Christ pay for the sins of all the unbelievers who will be eternally condemned, and did he pay for their sins fully and completely on the cross" (G601)? Particular Redemption and General Redemption - Christ paid for the sins of all who would believe (Matt 20:28, John 10:11, Acts 20:28, Eph 5:25, John 6:37-39, John 17:9); if Christ paid for all men's sins everywhere, why are there people in hell suffering the wrath of God for their sins? We all agree 1. that not all will be saved and that hell is real, 2. "a free offer of the gospel can rightly be made to every person ever born" (John 6:51, Rom 10:13), 3. "Christ death in itself...has the infinite merit and is in itself sufficient to pay the penalty of the sins of as many or as few as the Father and the Son decreed" (G597) Application & Discussion Questions: 1. Do you understand the depth of the covenantal love that God has for his own which is different than the love he has for the whole world (i.e. do you love all women of the world in the same sense of the word "love" that you love your wife)? 2. What implications does the truth that the God-man Jesus is our sympathetic high priest bring to our daily lives?

VII. The Doctrine of the Holy Spirit & the Doctrine of the Trinity The work of the Holy Spirit: What are the distinctive activities of the Holy Spirit throughout the history of the Bible? (p634) Defined: "The work of the Holy Spirit is to manifest the active presence of God in the world, and especially in the church" (G634). Four aspects of the work of the Holy Spirit to bring evidence of God's presence and to bless: A. He Empowers: 1. he gives life both physically and spiritually: Job 34:14-15, John 3:6-7; 2. he gives power for service: Num 27:18, Ex 31:3, 1 Sam 16:13, Luke 4:14, Acts 1:8; John 7:39 [does not] mean that there was no activity of the Holy Spirit in people's lives before Pentecost [Acts 2]...the more powerful, fuller work of the Holy Spirit that is characteristic of life after Pentecost had not yet begun in the lives of the disciples: Ezek 36:26 and Joel 2:28-29 fulfilled in Christ" (G637). B. He Purifies: he convicts the world of sin: John 16:8; sanctification to the one who believes comes by the power of the Spirit: 2 Thes 2:13, Gal 5:22-23, Rom 8:13; C. He Reveals: 1. revelation to prophets and apostles: 2 Peter 1:21; 2. he guides: Rom 8:4, 14; 3. he gives assurance: Rom 8:16, 1 John 4:13; 4. he teaches: John 16:13, 1 Cor 2:12; D. He Unifies: he is poured out on the community of believers not just leaders like Moses or Joshua: Acts 2:16-18 Peter says Joel 2 is fulfilled; 2 Cor 13:14, Eph 4:3;

The doctrine of the Trinity: How can God be three persons, yet one God? (p226) Defined: "God eternally exists as three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and each person is fully God, and there is one God" (G226). A. Doctrine of the Trinity is progressively revealed in Scripture: 1. partial revelation in the Old Testament: Gen 1:26, Gen 11:7, Is 6:8; Ps 45:6-7 has two separate persons called "God" which Heb 1:8 quotes this passage and says it is Christ; Ps 110:1 is quoted in Matt 22:41-42ff - paraphrase: "God the Father said to God the Son, 'Sit at my right hand'"(G228); Holy Spirit: Isa 63:10; Christ is Isaiah's True Servant thus three persons in God-head: Isa 48:16; 2. more complete revelation in the New Testament: 3 members doing 3 things: Matt 3:16-17; all three mentioned: Matt 28:19; 2 Cor 13:14 B. Three Summary Statements: 1. God is three persons: distinct persons - i.e. the Father is not the Son nor the Holy Spirit: "with God" - John 1:1-2, "sharing" - John 17:24 2. Each person is fully God: Jesus is God: John 1:1-2, Thomas proclaims Jesus as God: John 20:27; Christ = Mighty God: Isa 9:6; the Holy Spirit is God: to lie to the Holy Spirit is to lie to God: Act 5:3-4, 1 Pet 1:2; 3. There is one God: if we stop with 1-2 above, then polytheism: Deut 6:4, Ex 15:11, 1 Tim 2:5, 1 Cor 8:6, James 2:19; C. The main errors in church history on the Trinity: when one of the three Summary Statements above about the Trinity is missing, church history gives us many examples of heresies; "[analogies of water, ice, steam, trees, etc.] It is best to conclude that no analogy adequately teaches about the Trinity, and all are misleading in significant ways" (G241); "Athanasius understood...that Christianity stands or falls with the

confession of the deity of Christ and of the Trinity" (G248); so believe the Three Summary Statements; 1. Modalism "claims that there is one person who appears to us in the different forms or 'modes'"(G242); 2. Arianism "denies the full deity of the Son and the Holy Spirit" (G243); a. subordinationism "held that the Son was eternal (not created) and divine, but still not equal to the Father in being or attributes - the Son was inferior or 'subordinate' in being to God the Father" (G245) b. adoptionism "is the view that Jesus lived as an ordinary man until his baptism, but then God 'adopted' Jesus as his 'Son' and conferred on him supernatural powers" (G245); D. What is at stake if this doctrine falls into error? 1. atonement: if Christ is not fully God, he could not have shielded us from the wrath of the Holy God against us and our sin; 2. justification by faith alone: if Jesus was created, then we must trust in something additional to save us like (i.e. Jehovah's Witnesses and works); 3. worship and prayer: we would not worship Christ if he were not God and thus disobey commands such as Phil 2:9-11; pride: we would attribute wrongly that salvation is of man and not of God; God's Independence: if there is no Trinity then God did not create the world out of overflow but to fulfill a need; unity: what would the basis of unity in a diverse world be if there is not perfect unity and plurality in the Godhead? E. What are the distinctions between the members of the Trinity? 1. example of different roles in our salvation: God planned it (Eph 1:3-6, God sent: John 3:16), Christ purchased it (John 6:38), and the Holy Spirit completes it (John 15:26); 2. "equal in being but subordinate in role...has been essential to the church's doctrine of the Trinity since it was first affirmed in the Nicene Creed" (G251) 1 Cor 11:3; "There are 3 distinct persons, and the being of each person is equal to the whole being of God (dotted lines as relationship not division)" (G255); Discussion Questions: 1. Are we banking on the promises of God that the Holy Spirit is our helper in his four key areas noted above? Re-read three of the verses listed there and walk in faith. 2. How does the diversity of a football team, for instance, reflect the plurality and unity in the Trinity? How do we reflect this in our homes? church? work?

VIII. The Doctrine of the Application of Redemption (Part 1) Intro: Common Grace: What are the undeserved blessings that God gives to all people, both believers and unbelievers? How can God continue to give blessings to sinners who deserve only death (G657)?

Defined: Common grace is the grace of God by which he gives people innumerable blessing that are not part of salvation (G657).

A. Examples of Common Grace: 1. Physically-rain on both just and unjust (Matt 5:44-45); 2. Intellectually-every man has a basic understanding of God (Rom 1:21); 3. Morally-even sinners know and do some good (Luke 6:33, have consciences Rom 2:14-15); 4. Creatively-reflect back to God the excellence of His creativity; 5. Society-government is one of God’s primary means to restrain evil in society (Rom 13:1, 4); 6. Common grace does not save people as is not the same as saving grace; “[it] does not change the human heart or bring people to genuine repentance and faith…[and good actions do not] merit God’s approval or favor” (G663) (Rom 14:23);

B. Reasons for Common Grace: 1. To show God’s patience to redeem those who will be saved (2 Peter 3:9-10); 2. To demonstrate God’s character of goodness and mercy to all (Ps 145:9); 3. To demonstrate God’s justice as wrath is being stored up on the unrighteous (Rom 2:5); 4. To demonstrate God’s glory as humans reflect as in a mirror back to God the greatness of his character, creativity, order, work, etc. (Gen 1:27);

“The Order of Salvation” – 10 steps that God brings His own through, starting with election, gospel call, and regeneration that we will study this month and the other 7 through glorification in the next 2 moths, Lord willing.

Step 1: Election and Reprobation: When and why did God choose us? Are some not chosen?

Defined: Election is an act of God before creation in which he chooses some people to be saved, not on account of any foreseen merit in them, but only because of his sovereign good pleasure (G670). Unconditional Election means that his election “is not conditioned upon anything that God sees in us that makes us worthy of his choosing us” (G679).

A. Does the NT teach predestination? Acts 13:48; Eph 1:4-6, 12; 1 Thess 1:4-5; 2 Thess 2:13; B. How does the NT present the teaching of election? As a comfort – not the favored of the world (scattered) but you are the elect of God (1 Peter 1:1-3); As a reason to praise God (Eph 1:5-6); As an encouragement to evangelism (2 Tim 2:10);

Systematic Theology Survey FEFC BIC 2nd Saturdays19

Page 20: Grudem - Systematic Theology Notes · Systematic Theology Purpose: to provide the men of our church a one page summary of twelve of the main doctrines of the faith so as to be better

C. Foreknowledge is not “foresight” - “Election is not based on God’s foreknowledge of our faith” (G676); “Quite commonly people will agree that God predestines some to be saved, but they will say that he does this by looking into the future and seeing who will believe in Christ who will not. If he sees that a person is going to come to saving faith, then he will predestine that person to be saved, based on the foreknowledge of that person’s faith” (G676). This goes against key passages (2 Tim 1:9, Rom 9:11-13, Rom 11:5-6, Eph 1:5-6);

Key question: “…what ultimately makes the difference between those who believe and those who do not? If our answer is that it is ultimately based on something God does (namely, his sovereign election of those who would be saved), then we see that salvation at its most foundational level is based on grace alone. On the other hand, if we answer that the ultimate difference between those who are saved and those who are not is because of something in man (that is, a tendency or disposition to believe or not believe), then salvation ultimately depends on a combination of grace plus human ability” (G678).

Defined: “Reprobation is the sovereign decision of God in eternity past to pass over some persons, in sorrow deciding not to save them, and to punish them for their sins, and thereby to manifest justice” (G685); (Jude 4, Rom 9:17-22, Rom 11:7, 1 Peter 2:8); “…the cause of election lies in God, and the cause of reprobation lies in the sinner…the ground of election is God’s grace, whereas the ground of reprobation is God’s justice. Therefore ‘double predestination’ is not a helpful or accurate phrase, because it neglects these differences between election and reprobation” (G686).

“God causes us to chose Christ voluntarily [we make real, willing, responsible decisions]…Our choices are voluntary because they are what we want to do and what we decide to do” but unregenerate man will always chose himself and other things rather than God - we were not neutral to God, we were hostile (see Regeneration below) (G680);

Step 2: The Gospel Call and Effective Calling: What is the gospel message? How does it become effective?

Defined: Effective calling is an act of God the Father, speaking through the human proclamation of the gospel, in which he summons people to himself such a way that they respond in saving faith (G693).

A. “Effective call” or “internal call“: There is an order to our salvation (Rom 8:30); effective call is God sovereignly drawing us to himself (John 6:44, Acts 16:14); effective call precedes the necessary step of our repenting of our sins (Acts 20:21); it comes through the Gospel Call (2 Thes 2:14) and we must hear the gospel to believe (Rom 10:14);

Systematic Theology Survey FEFC BIC 2nd Saturdays20

Page 21: Grudem - Systematic Theology Notes · Systematic Theology Purpose: to provide the men of our church a one page summary of twelve of the main doctrines of the faith so as to be better

B. “Gospel call” or “general call” or “external call” (all the same): this is the gospel message going out to all people through our voices calling them to repent and believe - those with an Effective Call will gladly believe at some point; 1. Explain the facts of salvation (all sinned, sin requires death, Christ paid penalty - Rom 3:23, 6:23, 5:8); 2. Invite to respond to Christ personally in repentance and faith (John 1:11-12); 3. Call to trust the promises of forgiveness and eternal life (John 3:16);

Step 3: Regeneration: What does it mean to be born again?

Defined: Regeneration is a secret act of God in which he imparts new spiritual life to us.

A. Regeneration is totally a work of God: “Effective Calling is thus God the Father speaking powerfully to us, and regeneration is God the Father and God the Holy Spirit working powerfully in us, to make us alive” (Acts 10:44) (G700); B. It is mysterious to us: our whole person is affected by regeneration not just our spirit (Eph 2:1); C. “R comes before F” - regeneration comes before faith (Acts 16:14, 1 Cor 2:14, John 6:65); since fallen man does not start out neutral to God, God must act first (Rom 8:7-8); "Prevenient Grace" is the erroneous belief that, similar to common grace, God moves everyone to a neutral position where they can chose or reject Christ. D. It must bring results in life: “This does not of course mean that the person will have a perfect life, but only that the pattern of life will not be one of continuing indulgence in sin [but characterized as one who is] “obedient to Christ” (G704) (1 John 5:1, 3:9, 5:18);

Systematic Theology Survey FEFC BIC 2nd Saturdays21

Page 22: Grudem - Systematic Theology Notes · Systematic Theology Purpose: to provide the men of our church a one page summary of twelve of the main doctrines of the faith so as to be better

Application / Discussion Questions: 1. Common grace: can we look around us right now and name 10 examples of common grace for which we can thank God (I.e. sun, rain, government, etc. - careful not to cite saving grace examples here).

2. Regeneration: “Have you thought before that regeneration is prior to saving faith? Are you convinced of it now, or is there still some question in your mind?…By way of analogy, how do you feel about the fact that when you were born physically you had no choice in the matter” (G706) (John 3:3-8)?

3. Election and Reprobation: “Does the doctrine of election give you any comfort or assurance about your future?” Is this doctrine pride-crushing for us and a reason for thanking God for His sovereign mercy?

IX. The Doctrine of the Application of Redemption (Part 2) Step 4: Conversion (Faith & Repentance): What is true repentance? What is saving faith? Can people accept Jesus as Savior and not as Lord? Defined: "Conversion is our willing response to the gospel call, in which we sincerely repent of sins and place our trust in Christ for salvation... The turning FROM sin is called repentance, and the turning TO Christ is called faith" (G709). • A. True saving faith includes knowledge (Rom 10:14), approval (John 3:2), AND

personal trust (John 3:16 believes INTO him), but these three not coming together do not save (James 2:19); "Saving faith is trust in Jesus Christ as a living person for forgiveness of sins and for eternal life with God" (G710); B. Faith and repentance must come together: "Repentance is a heartfelt sorrow for sin, a renouncing of it, and a sincere commitment to forsake it and walk in obedience to Christ" 2 Cor 7:9-10, Heb 12:17 (G713); C. Both faith and repentance continue throughout life (Matt 6:12, Gal 2:20, daily);

Step 5: Justification (Right legal standing before God): How and when do we gain right legal standing before God? Defined: "Justification is an instantaneous legal act of God in which he (1) thinks of our sins as forgiven and Christ's righteousness as belonging to us, and (2) declares us to be righteous in his sight" (G723). • A. Justification includes a legal declaration by God - declared by God to be

righteous / not guilty, forensic justification (Rom 3:20); no condemnation before God (Rom 8:1) B. God declares us to be righteous in his sight (IS 61:10, Rom 5:19); C. God can declare us to be just because he imputes Christ's righteousness to us; triple imputation: Adam's guilt imputed to us; our sin imputed Christ; Christ's righteousness imputed to us (Rom 4:6, 5:17, 1 Cor 1:30); "The Roman Catholic view may be said to understand justification as based not on IMPUTED righteousness but on INFUSED righteousness - that is, righteousness that God actually puts into us and that changes us internally and in terms of our actual moral character...The result of this Roman Catholic view of justification is that people cannot be sure if they are in a 'state of grace' where they experience God's complete acceptance and favor" (G728); D. Justification comes to us entirely by God's grace, not on account of any merit in ourselves (Rom 3:20, Titus 3:7); E. God justifies us through the means of our faith in Christ (Gal 2:16) (Spurgeon: water=grace - aqueduct=faith, - saved BY grace THROUGH faith Eph 2:8-10); WHY faith? "...because faith is the one attitude of the heart that is the exact opposite of depending upon ourselves (Rom 4:16);

Step 6: Adoption (Membership in God's family): What are the benefits of being a member of God's family? Defined: "Adoption is an act of God whereby he makes us members of his family (G736). • A. Scriptural evidence for adoption (John 1:12, more fully realized in NT, Gal

3:23-26 ); B. Adoption follows conversion and is an outcome of saving faith (same verses in A.); C. Adoption is distinct from justification (1 John 3:1); D. Adoption has

privileges: relate as sons no longer slaves (Gal 4:7); compassionate father (Ps 103:13-14); discipline (Heb 12:5-7, 10); we are brothers (Rom 8:12, James 1:2)

Step 7: Sanctification (Growth and likeness to Christ): How do we grow in Christian maturity? What are the blessings of Christian growth? Defined: "Sanctification is a progressive work of God and man that makes us more and more free from sin and like Christ in our actual lives" (G746); it is not a "both/and" or "synergistic" way in that I do my part and God meets me half-way doing his part in my holiness; rather it is "because of" or "out of" or "as a result of" His sovereign grace in my life - my union with Christ and the Holy Spirit's faithful sanctifying work; I am able to apply much spiritual labor BECAUSE God is first at work in me (logic and grammar in Phil 2:12, 1 Cor 15:10, Gal 3:1-5, Col 2:6); • A. Sanctification BEGINS at regeneration (1 Cor 6:11, Rom 6:17-18); B.

Sanctification INCREASES throughout life - live like who you already are (Phil 3:13-14); C. Sanctification is complete at death and we never reach being perfect in this life; perfectionism is the false doctrine "that sinless perfection is possible in this life" (Matt 6:11-12, 1 Kings 8:46, Prov 20:9, Eccl 7:20) (G750); D. If perfection will never be fully reached in this life, why try and why grow in maturity? Answer: because without holiness, we will not see God (Heb 12:14, Rom 8:12-13); so cry out to Christ as your only hope to obey joyfully and delight in him (Ps 37:4); live by faith in future grace (promises), all that God is & will be for us in Christ Jesus.

Application & Discussion Questions: 1. "Have you ever wondered if God is still continuing to punish you from time to time for sins you have done in the past, even long ago? How does the doctrine of justification help you deal with those feelings?" (G733). 2. "Sometimes people who have had unloving or cruel earthly fathers have found that their background creates difficulty in their thinking about God and relating to him as a heavenly Father" (G742); how can preaching to yourself (instead of listening to yourself) Heb 12:10, Matt 7:11, and Luke 11:13 be of great help by God's grace?

X. The Doctrine of the Application of Redemption (Part 3) Step 8: Baptism in and filling with the Holy Spirit (G763): Should we seek a 'baptism in the Holy Spirit" after conversion? What does it mean to be filled with the Holy Spirit? Defined: Believers receive one complete filling of the Holy Spirit at conversion; there is not a second or higher filling to receive later in life. • "Baptismal in the Holy Spirit occur[s] at conversion" (G768) (1 Cor 12:13);

Pentecost: "[the disciples] received this remarkable new empowering from the HS because they were living at the time of the transition between the old covenant work of the HS and the new covenant work of the HS (Joel's prophecy fulfilled in Acts 2:16)(G772). Dangers of 2nd filling idea: 1. implicit two-class Christianity (those who are spiritual/2nd baptized and those who are ordinary/carnal Christians); 2. Pride on the one hand or depression on the other

Step 9: The Perseverance of the Saints (Remaining a Christian): Can true Christians lose their salvation? How can we know if we are truly born again? Defined: "The perseverance of the saints means that all those who are truly born again will be kept by God's power and will persevere as Christians until the end of their lives, and that only those who persevere until the end have been truly born again" (G788). • A. the born again will persevere: Christ will cause His own to persevere (1 Peter

1:5, John 6:38-40, John 10:27-29, we have HS as a guarantee Eph 1:13-14); B. only those who persevere will be saved: it is not separate from faith (1 Pet 1:5) nor from the obedience of faith (John 8:31-32, Col 1:22-23, Heb 3:14); C. Those who finally fall away give many signs of conversion: they do not remain in faith until the end (1 John 2:19, John 15:1-7, Mark 4:16-17, Matt 7:21-23);

Transition: Death and the intermediate state: What is the purpose of death in the Christian life? What happens to our bodies and souls when we die? Defined: God uses our death as believers to complete our sanctification, our union with Christ, and ushers us immediately into the presence of God (or to immediate, eternal suffering for the unbeliever). • A. Death is not punishment for Christians (Rom 8:1); B. It completes our

sanctification: (Heb 12:6, 10-11); C. It is a joy for the believer 2 Cor 5:8, Phil 1:21-23), and its okay to grieve for loved ones: (Acts 8:2, John 11:35); D. Believers' souls go immediately into God's presence: (Luke 23:43, 2 Cor 5:8); E. Unbelievers go immediately to eternal punishment with no second chance to believe: (Luke 16:24-26, Heb 9:26, 2 Cor 5:10, deeds in this life not deeds after life Rom 2:5-10)

Step 10: Glorification: When will we receive resurrection bodies? What will they be like?

Systematic Theology Survey FEFC BIC 2nd Saturdays25

Page 26: Grudem - Systematic Theology Notes · Systematic Theology Purpose: to provide the men of our church a one page summary of twelve of the main doctrines of the faith so as to be better

Defined: "Glorification is the final step in the application of redemption. It will happen when Christ returns and raises from the dead the bodies of all believers for all time who have died, and reunites them with their souls, and changes the bodies of all believers who remain alive, thereby giving all believers at the same time perfect resurrection bodies like his own" (G828). • A. At Glorification, we receive new, heavenly bodies: (1 Cor 15:22-23, 51-52);

B. They will be imperishable: (1 Cor 15:24-44, 49); C. We will recognize others: Christ's nail prints remained (John 20:20, 27); the disciples recognized Moses and Elijah (Luke 9:30, 33); D. The entire creation renewed as well: Thorns and thistles of the ground, for example, as a result of sin (Gen 3:17-19) will be changed - creation will be restored and is longing for that day (Rom 8:19, 22-23);

Summary of all the 10 Steps of the Order of Salvation = Union with Christ: What does it mean to be "in Christ" or "united with Christ"? Defined: "Union with Christ is a phrase used to summarize several different relationships between believers and Christ, through which Christians receive every benefit of salvation." (G840). • A. We are IN Christ: (Eph 1:4, 2 Tim 1:9, 2 Tim 1:1, Rom 15:17); B. Christ is IN

us: (John 15:5, Col 1:27); C. We are LIKE Christ: (1 John 2:6, Eph 5:25, Rom 15:7); D. We are WITH Christ: (1 John 1:3, Matt 28:20, 1 Cor 1:9)

Review: 10 Step Order of Salvation-Doctrine of the Application of Redemption (G750):

1. In eternity past, God chose us in Him (Election); 2. General Call of salvation came to us before Conversion and Specific Gospel Call came AT Conversion; Steps 3-8 ALL happened at Conversion; Step 7&9 (sanctification and perseverance) progress through the Christian Life; At death we go to God; new bodies Step 10 happens when Christ returns;

Application & Discussion Questions: 1. Are we persevering in faith well or are we living in a pattern of disobedience and trusting a past "decision" for Christ or prayer we prayed for salvation? What assurances do we have today of our salvation? 1. Do I have a present trust in Christ for salvation (Heb 6:12)? 2. Is there evidence of a regenerating work of the HS in my heart (Rom 8:14-16)? 3. Do I see a long-term pattern of growth in my Christian life (2 Peter 1:5-10)? 2. Are you ready to die? Are you heading to see God's presence or judgment? Why?

XI. The Doctrine of the Church A. The nature of the church: What is necessary to make a church? How can we recognize a true church? What are the purposes of the church? Defined: "The church is the community of all true believers for all time" (G853); 2 Cor 6:14-18 "Paul's application to the Corinthians of promises originally given to Israel reflects his conviction that the church is the fulfillment of God's covenant people, being restored under the new covenant. The combination of 2 Sam. 7:14 (“I will be a father to you”) with Isa. 43:6 (“sons and daughters”) indicates that God's promise to become the “father” of David's “son,” the Messiah, is expanded to include all of God's people who are adopted into his new covenant “family”." 6• A. Nature of the Church: 1. local and universal (1 Cor 16:19 house; Acts 9:31

region; Eph 5:25 universal); 2. Metaphors for the church: bride of Christ (Eph 5:32), new temple / a new group of priests (1 Pet 2:5); body of Christ (1 Cor 12:12+); "The thought that the church is like the bride of Christ should stimulate us to strive for greater purity an holiness, and also greater love for Christ and submission to him. The image of the church as branches in a vine should cause us to rest in him more fully" (G859); B. Purposes of the Church: 1. Ministry to God - worship (Col 3:16, Eph 1:12); 2. Ministry to Believers - nurture (Col 1:28, Eph 4:12-13); 3. Ministry to the World - evangelism and mercy, "whole-person ministry" (Matt 28:19, Luke 6:35-36); "Missions exists because worship does not." 7

B. The Authority of the Church: What kind of authority does the church have? How should church discipline function? Defined: "The power of the church is its God-given authority to carry on spiritual warfare, proclaim the gospel, and exercise church discipline" (G887). • A. Spiritual Warfare (2 Cor 10:3-4, Rom 10:17): "These weapons, used against

demonic forces that hinder the spread of the gospel and the progress of the church, include such things as prayer, worship, the authority to rebuke demonic forces, the words of Scripture, faith, and righteous conduct on the part of the members of the church" (G888); B: Church & State: two distinct spheres (Matt 22:21, John 18:36); C. Church Discipline's Purpose: 1. restoration and reconciliation of the believer who is going astray (Gal 6:1, Heb 12:6, James 5:20); 2. to keep the sin from spreading to others ((Heb 12:15, 1 Cor 5:2, 6-7); 3. to protect the purity of the church and the honor of Christ (Rom 2:24, Rev 2:20, 14-16);

C. Church Government: How should a church be governed? How should church officers be chosen? Should women serve as pastors of churches? Defined: "A church officer is someone who has been publicly recognized as having the right and responsibility to perform certain functions for the benefit of the whole church" (G905). • A. Plurality of elders: as a pattern in all NT churches (Acts 14:23, 20, 17,

Titus1:5, 1 Tim 4:14, James 5:14); B. The Functions of Elders: servant leadership and teaching (1 Peter 5:2-5 not domineering, 1 Tim 5:17, Mark 10:42, 45, 1 Tim

3:2, Titus 1:9); C. Qualifications of Elders (and character for all of us to pursue out of our union with Christ) 1 Tim 3:2-7, Titus 1:6-9; D. Deacon Roles: Acts 6:1-6 "Here the apostles who ruled over the Jerusalem church found it necessary to delegate some administrative responsibilities to others [deacons]" (G919); 1 Tim 3:8-13 - qualifications suggest some functions as deacons (finances/money, admin/household, counseling and house to house visitation/v11 their wives);

D. Means of Grace within the Church: What are the different activities within the life of the church that God uses to bring blessing to us? What do we miss if we neglect involvement in a local church? "Means": What does the HS use to impart blessing? Defined: "The means of grace are any activities within the fellowship of the church that God uses to give more grace to Christians" (G950). • A. Nature: The list (below) is not all carried out only by the elders nor does it

make people more fit to receive justification (in contrast to Roman Catholic view; shorter and different list as well)(G951-952).

• B. At least 11 "Means of Grace", Bringing Blessing: 1. Teaching the Word (Rom 1:16, Is 55:10-11); 2. Baptism (Col 2:12); 3. The Lord's Supper: "the unity of believers is beautifully exhibited at the time of the Lord's Supper (1 Cor 10:17)" (G955); 4. Prayer: "genuine expression of our hearts and the reflection of sincere faith" (Eph 6:18)(G955); 5. Worship: using our voices to proclaim what we know to be true from His Word out of the affections of our heart (2 Chron. 5:13-14); 6. Church discipline: purity, joy, community (2 Cor 7:10); 7. Giving (2 Cor 9:7, 8:5); 8. Spiritual Gifts (1 Pet 4:10, 1 Cor 14:12); 9. Fellowship (Heb 10:24-25); 10. Evangelism: people blessed and messenger blessed (Acts 9:17 with Acts 9:20); 11. Personal Ministry to Individuals: often includes "words of encouragement or exhortation or wise counsel" (Col 3:16, Eph 4:29) (G959);

Application & Discussion Questions: 1. As the main pastor of your family, what two things are you going to share from today from God's Word to them (or the family / body of Christ if single)? 2. How does the quote, "Missions exists because worship [from people from all tribes] does not yet" relate to the purposes of the church listed above in section 1? Which purpose is primary and which purposes are overflow? 3. How does the promise in Matt 16:18 give us hope and peace? How is this similar to the metaphor that Christ is the head of the body in Col 1:18? Are we joyfully resting in Christ?

XII. The Doctrine of the Future Introduction: How do the NT writers talk about Christ's return in relation to holy living? Why study the doctrine of the future? Answer: Like Moses in Heb 11, this future hope is the path to holiness - hope in future grace (Heb 11:24-26, 2 Cor 7:1, 2 Pet 1:4,); "if this is what God promises to be to His holy people, we should make every effort to be such holy people. If these are the riches that await me, let me walk on that path of holiness that leads to them. Here holiness is a direct result of living in the light of the divine promises." 8

A. The Return of Christ: When and how will Christ return? Could he come back at any hour? • 1. Christ's return will be sudden, personal, visible, and bodily (1 Thess 4:16, Rev

22:20, John 14:3); 2. We should eagerly long for Christ's return (Titus 2:12-13, Acts 1:11); 3. We do not know WHEN Christ will return (Matt 24:44); 4. the final result of Christ's return: "judgment of unbelievers and the final reward of believers, and that believers will live with Christ in a new heaven and a new earth for all eternity" (G1094);

B. The Millennium: What is the millennium? When does it occur? Will Christians go through the Great Tribulation? • Three major views in church history:

1. Historic Pre-Millennialism (our church and EFCA) (Rev 20:1-10); 2. Post-Millennialism: usher in Christ's Kingdom with more Christians, then Christ returns; 3. Amillennialism: no future millennium yet to come - church age, Christ's return and judgment, then eternal state; ["T" in Figure 55.3 = tribulation (G1111)]

C. The Final Judgment and Eternal Punishment: Who will be judged? What is hell? • A. Scriptural basis of the final judgment (Rev 20:11-15, Rom 2:5); B. Nature of the

final judgment: Christ the judge (2 Tim 4:1); unbelievers judged (Rom 2:5-7); believers judged (Rom 14:10, 12, John 5:24, Luke 19:17,19); angels judged (2 Pet 2:4); we will help at the judgment (1 Cor 6:2-3); C. Justice of God in the final judgment - no one will be able to say it is not fair (Rom 2:2, 11, 3:19, Rev 19:1-2); D. Hell: "hell is a place of eternal conscious punishment for the wicked" (G1148) (Matt 25:30, 41, 25:46); every sin will be paid for - either in the blood of Christ at the cross for all who believe or in eternal punishment on those who do not believe.

D. The New Heavens and New Earth: What is heaven? Is it a place? How will the earth be renewed? What will it be like to live in the new heavens and new earth? • 1. We will live eternally with God in the New Heavens and a New Earth: a. heaven

is an actual place (Isa 66:1, Acts 1:11); b. the physical creation will be renewed and we will continue to exist and act in it (Rom 8:19-21, 2 Pet 3:10, 13, Rev 21:1); c. our resurrection bodies will be part of the renewed creation (Heb 2:8-9, Matt 5:5); d. the new creation will not be timeless but will include an unending succession of moments (Rev 22:2);

• 2. The new creation will be a place of great beauty and abundance and joy in the presence of God (Rev 21:3-4, 22:3, Ps 16:11);

Application & Discussion Questions: 1. "The Doctrine of the new creation provides a great motivation for storing up treasures in heaven rather than on earth" (G1163); As Abraham acted in faith because he knew by faith he would "get it all anyway", he was able to give the choice land to Lot (Gen 13:7-18). What are ways in which we live like "this is all there is to life so live hard now"? How could we live in faith like Abraham? - eyes on Christ, knowing and delighting in him in his Word, the author and perfecter of our faith (Heb 12:1-2)

2. "The Doctrine of the Final Judgment enables us to forgive others freely" (G1147). Do you see this in your life (1 Peter 2:22-23)?

3. Do we strive to live holy because it is the least we could do for God who sent Jesus to die for us (a.k.a. "The Debtor's Ethic")? "Could it be that gratitude for bygone grace has been pressed to serve as the power for holiness, which only faith in future grace was designed to perform?...By future grace I do not merely mean the grace of heaven and the age to come. I mean the grace that begins now, this very second, and sustains your life to the end of his paragraph. By grace I do not merely mean the pardon of God in passing over your sins, but also the power and beauty of God to keep you from sinning. By faith I do not merely mean the confidence that Jesus died for your sins, but also the confidence that God will 'also with him freely give us all things' (Romans 8:32). Faith is primarily a future-oriented 'assurance of things hoped for' (Hebrews 11:1). Its essence is the deep satisfaction with all that God promises to be for us in Jesus - beginning now!" 9

Question 1: Authority in the Trinity

The Question was raised in the Doctrine of Man section about men's and women's roles and how the reflect the roles in the trinity. When we were talking about Christ submitting to the will of the Father, does this necessarily imply different levels of authority in God? Does God have more authority than Jesus, the way that the husband has more authority than the wife?

Pastor Chad had a great email response to this over this past week. The essence of the answer is that in the Godhead "they are all equal in essence, power, and authority; but distinct persons with distinct roles." Here is more from the email:

****** I think a lot depends on how you use the word "authority." I was not at the BIC meeting so I can't comment for sure on what was said, but I will give you my concept of authority among the Trinity and what is meant by Christ's "authority in heaven and earth." Of course, this is not my concept, but what I believe Scripture to teach. 1.) When I originally read your notes Eric, I had no problem with what you wrote under point 3 of B. My assumption was that you simply meant that like marriage those in the God-head have distinct roles and willfully submit to each other. Jesus did his work as a man living on the earth. I think we all agree that Jesus never stopped being God; rather he willfully submitted his divine prerogative to use his attributes as God to the will and authority of the Father (Phil 2:5-11). However, I think it would be incorrect to suggest that the Father has more authority than the Son or even the Spirit. All three are God and as such possess the same authority and power. Now certainly their is a submission within the Trinity (Son to Father, Spirit to Father and Son) both during Jesus' earthly life and even now; but I think a better way to say this is that each person of the Trinity have distinct roles and exercise those roles in relation to one another and not apart from each other. Willful submission is only on the part of the Son and Spirit. Certainly, it would appear based on my last statement that the Father does have “more authority” because the Son and Spirit submit to him, but again it all depends on how you use this word authority. I think a clearer way to say it is to emphasize that they are all equal in essence, power, and authority; but distinct persons with distinct roles. All three continue to possess the same authority and power, but simply use that power and authority in relation to one another. I think the example of a husband and wife is better served when we understand that both are the same in essence and quality (image of God, humans, dignity), but they have distinct roles. I would stay away from the authority issue in trying to make a connection between the Trinity and marriage. I think any example or illustration for the Trinity (or visa-versa) will be plagued in some way because the Trinity is ultimately a mystery. We must simply state the truth that Systematic Theology Survey FEFC BIC 2nd Saturdays31

Page 32: Grudem - Systematic Theology Notes · Systematic Theology Purpose: to provide the men of our church a one page summary of twelve of the main doctrines of the faith so as to be better

Scripture presents and leave it at that. I think the illustration of the Trinity used by Grudem is helpful for understanding the same essence, but distinct roles, but I think we start to get into trouble if we press it too far.

The same authority and power among the Trinity is evident in creation and the resurrection. God created the Heavens and the Earth (John 1:1), but we see the Spirit active in creation (Gen 1:1) and we know that it is in Christ that all things were created and hold together (Col 1:15-20). God will raise up Jesus from the dead (Acts 2:24), but Jesus has the authority to lay down his own life and raise it up again (John 10:18), and even the Spirit raised Jesus from the dead (Rom 8:11). To further solidify the "sameness" of authority between the Father and Son is when we read Psalm 110:1-2. ESV Psalm 110:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD says to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool." 2 The LORD sends forth from Zion by our mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies! The relationship and authority of the Son and the Spirit is so closely linked that for the Father and Jesus to send the Spirit means that God himself will be with his people. ESV John 14:16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another aHelper,1 to be with you forever,

ESV John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

ESV John 15:26 "But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, bhe will bear witness about me.

ESV John 16:7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.

ESV Hebrews 13:6 So we can confidently say, "The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?" 7 ¶ Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Notice the parallel language between the John passages and Hebrews? Moreover, the wording in John for "another" is another of the same kind. For Christ to be with his people is by the Spirit (same with God the Father).

2.) The statement in Matthew 28:10-12 must be understood within the scope of redemptive-history (namely the movement from OT to NT). Jesus has proven to be the true Son and King in the book of Matthew as he overcomes sin and death. As such, he is given all authority as the true Son of Man and as the true King. Adam and David failed to have this sort of authority, as did Solomon and every other King of Israel. A parallel statement to help us appreciate Matthew 28:18-20 from a redemptive historical perspective is found in Romans 1:1-4.

ESV Romans 1:1 ¶ Paul, a servant1 of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning his Son, who was descended from David1 according to the flesh 4 and was declared to be the Son of God bin power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, Paul is not teaching that Jesus was not the Son of God at some point, but by proving himself the true son (by being raised from the dead) he has received all the authority associated with the privileges of sonship and kingship. There was never a time that Jesus was not the Son, not the judge of all men, nor the true king; but in the progress of redemptive history and in the proper time Jesus came as a man and fulfilled all the promises given to David (2 Sam 7). This is why the humanity of Christ cannot be a forgotten aspect of the second person of the Trinity. Therefore, as the Son of Man, Jesus has been exalted and given all authority to judge man and sit on David's throne (Acts 17:31; 1 Cor 15:1ff). The only way we can appreciate these verses or this concept is to understand it as it comes to us in the unfolding of God's progressive revelation. I alluded to this concept briefly this morning. Jesus being made perfect through suffering does not mean he was imperfect or needed discipline from the Father, but in his humanity proved to be the man par excellence as such has been given all the rights, privileges, and promises of sonship.

It is my firm conviction that these "difficult" passages of Scripture can only be properly appreciated when we view the Bible from a Redemptive Historical perspective; as a linear story moving from lesser to greater, promise to fulfillment. Even the Psa 110:1-2 passage is only fully appreciated when we see that after Christ comes how the apostles use that passage to show Jesus as God himself, the true Son of David, and the forever priest. I typed this quickly, so if something is unclear please let me know. Hope this helps and if you have any follow up questions, please ask. Chad Knudson

Question 2: Could Jesus have sinned?

When talking about the humanity and deity of Christ, the God-man, when he was tempted, could he have sinned? "if we are asking if it was actually possible for Jesus to have sinned, it seems that we must conclude that it was not possible. The union of his human and divine natures in one person prevented it" (G539).

Christ's human nature did not exist apart from or independent of His divine nature, therefore he could not have sinned (James 1:13);

Christ's temptations were real (Luke 4:2), "in fact, they were most real BECAUSE he did not give in to them... It seems appropriate to conclude that Jesus met every temptation to sin, not by his divine power, but on the strength of his human nature alone (though, of course, it was not 'alone' because Jesus in exercising the kind of faith that humans should exercise, was perfectly depending on God the Father and the Holy Spirit at every moment)" G539

Verse Handouts for Each Section It is important as we study these doctrines of the faith to see them on the very pages of Scripture. We are not following man's thoughts on these but these doctrines are grounded in the Word of God. The following handouts follow along the flow of verses in each of the sections above, starting with Section II and going through Section XII.

1. Rom 1:18-25 18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. 21For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. 24Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. 2. Ps 19:1-2 The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. Day to day pours forth speech, And night to night reveals knowledge. 3. 2 Cor 4:4 4in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of

the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 4. Matt 11:27 All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. 5. Ps 145:3 Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable. 6. Ps 147:5 Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite. 7. Rom 11:33 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! 8. 1 John 2:13 13I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I have written to you, children, because you know the Father. 9. Jer 9:23-24 23Thus says the LORD, “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; 24but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the LORD. 10. Acts 17:24-25 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made

with hands; Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; 11. Job 41:11 Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine. 12. Zeph. 3:17-18 The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing. I will gather them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly, who are of thee, to whom the reproach of it was a burden. 13. Eph 1:11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: 14. Isa. 46:9-11 Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure: Calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executeth my counsel from a far country: yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it. 15. Jonah 3:4 And Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown. 16. Jonah 3:10 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way;

and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not. 17. Gen 6:6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. 18. 1 Sam. 15:10-11 Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, saying, 11“I regret that I have made Saul king, for he has turned back from following Me and has not carried out My commands.” 19. Ex 32:9-14 9The LORD said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and behold, they are an obstinate people. 10“Now then let Me alone, that My anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them; and I will make of you a great nation.”11Then Moses entreated the LORD his God, and said, “O LORD, why does Your anger burn against Your people whom You have brought out from the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? 12“Why should the Egyptians speak, saying, ‘With evil intent He brought them out to kill them in the mountains and to destroy them from the face of the earth’? Turn from Your burning anger and change Your mind about doing harm to Your people. 13“Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants to whom You swore by Yourself, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heavens, and all this land of which I have spoken I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.’” 14So the LORD changed His mind about the

harm which He said He would do to His people. 20. 1 Sam 15:29 And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent. 21. 1 Sam 12:22 For the LORD will not forsake his people for his great name’s sake: because it hath pleased the LORD to make you his people. 22. Job 36:26 Behold, God is great, and we know him not, neither can the number of his years be searched out. 23. 2 Pet 3:8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 24. Gal 4:4-5 But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. 25. Ps 139:7-10 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. 27. 1 Kings 8:27 But will God indeed dwell on the

earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded? 28. Ps 16:11 Thou wilt show me the path of life: in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. 29. Ex 34:6-7 6Then the LORD passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth; 7who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations. 30. Ex 20:4-6 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. 31. Jn 4:23-24 “But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24“God is spirit, and those who worship Him

Matt 11:21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 41. 1 Jn 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 42. 2 Pet 3:8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 43. Deut 9:7-8 7“Remember, do not forget how you provoked the LORD your God to wrath in the wilderness; from the day that you left the land of Egypt until you arrived at this place, you have been rebellious against the LORD. 8“Even at Horeb you provoked the LORD to wrath, and the LORD was so angry with you that He would have destroyed you. 31. John 3:36 36“He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” 32. Rom 1:18 18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all

ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 33. Eph 2:3 3Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. 34. 1 Thess. 1:10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come. 35. Ps 37:4 Delight yourself in the LORD; And He will give you the desires of your heart. 36. Heb 1:3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 37. Col 1:17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. 38. Eph 1:11 also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will 39. Ps 135:6-7 Whatever the LORD pleases, He does, In heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps. He causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; Who makes lightnings for the rain, Who brings forth the wind from His treasuries. 40. Prov 16:33 The lot is cast into the lap, But its every decision is from the LORD. 41. Ps 104:4 He makes £the winds His messengers, Flaming fire His ministers.

42. Job 1:12 Then the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power, only do not put forth your hand on him.” So Satan departed from the presence of the LORD. 43. Job 1:15 and the Sabeans attacked and took them. They also slew the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you. 44. Job 1:21-22 He said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked I shall return there. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD.” Through all this Job did not sin nor did he blame God. 45. Ps 76:10 For the wrath of man shall praise You; With a remnant of wrath You will gird Yourself. 46. Prov 16:4 The LORD has made everything for its own purpose, Even the wicked for the day of evil. 47. Gen 37:4 His brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers; and so they hated him and could not speak to him £on friendly terms. 48. Gen 37:20 “Now then, come and let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits; and we will say, ‘A wild beast devoured him.’ Then let us see what will become of his dreams!” 49. Gen 50:20 As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive. 50. Ex 4:21 The LORD said to Moses, “When you go back to Egypt see that you perform before Pharaoh all the wonders which I have put in your power; but I will

harden his heart so that he will not let the people go. 51. Ex 7:3 But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart that I may multiply My signs and My wonders in the land of Egypt. 52. Ex 8:15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and did not listen to them, as the LORD had said. 53. 2 Sam 24:1 Now again the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and it incited David against them to say, “Go, number Israel and Judah.” 54. 2 Sam 24:10 Now David’s heart troubled him after he had numbered the people. So David said to the LORD, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done. But now, O LORD, please take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.” 55. 2 Sam 24:12-17 “Go and speak to David, ‘Thus the LORD says, “I am offering you three things; choose for yourself one of them, which I will do to you.”13So Gad came to David and told him, and said to him, “Shall seven years of famine come to you in your land? Or will you flee three months before your foes while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days’ pestilence in your land? Now consider and see what answer I shall return to Him who sent me.” 14Then David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Let us now fall into the hand of the LORD for His mercies are great, but do not let me fall into the hand of man.”15So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning until the appointed time, and seventy thousand men of the people

from Dan to Beersheba died. 16When the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD relented from the calamity and said to the angel who destroyed the people, “It is enough! Now relax your hand!” And the angel of the LORD was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. 17Then David spoke to the LORD when he saw the angel who was striking down the people, and said, “Behold, it is I who have sinned, and it is I who have done wrong; but these sheep, what have they done? Please let Your hand be against me and against my father’s house.” 56. Acts 2:23 this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. 57. Acts 4:28 to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose predestined to occur. 58. Rom 1:21-23 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. 59. Ps 103:19 The LORD has established His throne in the heavens, And His £sovereignty rules over all. 60. Daniel 4:35 “All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, but He does according to His will in the host of heaven and

among the inhabitants of earth; And no one can ward off His hand or say to Him, ‘What have You done?’" 61. 2 Tim 2:22 Now flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. 62. Acts 2:23 this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. 63. Eph 1:4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. 64. Jude 4 For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. 65. Eph 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. 66. Gen 3:12 The man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.” 67. Rom 9:19-20 You will say to me then, “Why does He still find fault? For who resists His will?” On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God? The thing molded will not say to the molder, “Why did you make me like this,” will it? 68. John 16:24 Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full. 70. 2 Sam 10:12 “Be strong, and let us show ourselves courageous for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God; and may the LORD do what is good in His sight.” 71. Acts 18:9-10 And the Lord said to Paul in the night by a vision, “Do not be afraid any longer, but go on speaking and do not be silent; for I am with you, and no man will attack you in order to harm you, for I have many people in this city.” 72. Acts 27:31 Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, “Unless these men remain in the ship, you yourselves cannot be saved.”

1. Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2. Ps 33:6, 9 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, 9For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast. And by the breath of His mouth all their host. 3. John 1:3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. 4. Gen 2:7 Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. 5. Gen. 2:21-23 21So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. 22The LORD God £fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. 23The man said, “This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.” 6. Mark 4:41 They became very much afraid and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?” 7. Job 12:10 In whose hand is the life of every living thing, And the breath of all mankind? 8. Ps 19:1-2 The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. 2 Day to day pours forth speech, And night to night reveals knowledge.

9. Isa 43:7 Everyone who is called by My name, And whom I have created for My glory, Whom I have formed, even whom I have made.” 10. Rev 4:11 “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.” 11. Gen 1:4, 10 God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 10God called the dry land earth, and the gathering of the waters He called seas; and God saw that it was good. 12. 1 Tim 4:1-3 1But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, 2by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron, 3men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth. 13. Mark 14:36 And He was saying, “Abba! Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will.” 14. Matt 6:8 “So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. 15. Luke 11:9-12 9“So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10“For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened. 11“Now suppose one

of you fathers is asked by his son for a fish; he will not give him a snake instead of a fish, will he? 12“Or if he is asked for an egg, he will not give him a scorpion, will he? 16. John 14:6 Jesus said* to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. 17. Ex 29:4 “Then you shall bring Aaron and his sons to the doorway of the tent of meeting and wash them with water. 18. Ex 29:21 “Then you shall take some of the blood that is on the altar and some of the anointing oil, and sprinkle it on Aaron and on his garments and on his sons and on his sons’ garments with him; so he and his garments shall be consecrated, as well as his sons and his sons’ garments with him. 19. Heb 10:22 Let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 20. 1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen race, A royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. 21. Acts 3:6 But Peter said, “I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene—walk!” 22. 1 John 5:14-15 This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15And

if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him. 23. James 1:5-8 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. 7For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, 8being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. 24. James 1:6 But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. 25. 1 Peter 3:7, 12 You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered. 12 “For the eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous, And His ears attend to their prayer, But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” 26. Prov 28:9 He who turns away his ear from listening to the law, Even his prayer is an abomination. 27. Ps 19:12 Who can discern his errors? Acquit me of hidden faults. 28. Matt 6:14-15 “For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15“But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will

not forgive your transgressions. 29. 2 Cor 12:8 Concerning this I implored the Lord three times that it might leave me. 30. Matt 6:7 “And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words. 31. Rev 6:10-11 10and they cried out with a loud voice, saying, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, will You refrain from judging and avenging our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” 11And there was given to each of them a white robe; and they were told that they should rest for a little while longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brethren who were to be killed even as they had been, would be completed also. 32. 2 Cor 12:8-9 Concerning this I implored the Lord three times that it might leave me. 9And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 33. Rom 8:28 And we know that £God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. 34. 1 Pet 5:6-7 6Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. (Are you humble enough to be care-free? - Piper)

35. Num 23:19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? 36. Rom 15:30-31 Now I urge you, brethren, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God for me, 31that I may be rescued from those who are disobedient in Judea, and that my service for Jerusalem may prove acceptable to the saints; 37. Acts 21:17 After we arrived in Jerusalem, the brethren received us gladly. 30Then all the city was provoked, and the people rushed together, and taking hold of Paul they dragged him out of the temple, and immediately the doors were shut. 38. Acts 17:24-25 “The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands; 25nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things; 39. Isaiah 64:4 For from days of old they have not heard or perceived by ear, Nor has the eye seen a God besides You, Who acts in behalf of the one who waits for Him. 40. Eph 1:18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 19and what is the surpassing

greatness of His power toward us who believe. 41. 1 Pet 3:15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; 42. John 16:24 “Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full. 43. Heb 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation? 44. Num 22:31 Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way with his drawn sword in his hand; and he bowed all the way to the ground. 45. 1 Cor 6:3 Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more matters of this life? 46. Col 1:16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. 47. Rev 4:11 “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.” 48. Gal 1:8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! 49. 1 Cor 1:10 Now I exhort you, brethren, by the

name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment. 50. 1 Cor. 5:1-5 1It is actually reported that there is immorality among you, and immorality of such a kind as does not exist even among the Gentiles, that someone has his father’s wife. 2You have become arrogant and have not mourned instead, so that the one who had done this deed would be removed from your midst. 51. Ex 4:2-8 2The LORD said to him, “What is that in your hand?” And he said, “A staff.” 3Then He said, “Throw it on the ground.” So he threw it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from it. 4But the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand and grasp it by its tail”—so he stretched out his hand and caught it, and it became a staff in his hand— 5“that they may believe that the LORD, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you.” 52. Ex 7:12 For each one threw down his staff and they turned into serpents. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs. 53. Jer 13:23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots? Then you also can do good who are accustomed to doing evil. 54. Jer 17:9 “The heart is more deceitful than all elseAnd is desperately sick;Who can understand it? 55. John 3:2 man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that

You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” 56. Matt 12:28 But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 57. Heb 2:4 God also testifying with them, both by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will. 58. Ps 19:7-9 The law of the LORD is perfect, restoring the soul;The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple .8 The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever;The judgments of the LORD are true; they are righteous altogether. 59. Ps 119:9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word. 60. 1 Thess 2:13 For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe. 61. 2 Thess 3:14 If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of that person and do not associate with him, so that he will be put to shame. 62. 2 Tim 3:16-17 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction,

for training in righteousness; 17so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. 63. Titus 1:2 in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised long ages ago 64. 2 Pet 1:3 seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him

who called us by His own glory and excellence. 65. 2 Cor 3:18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit. 66. John 14: 26“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all

things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. 67. Heb 1: 1God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, 2in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.

be the firstborn among many brethren; 10. 1 Cor 15:49 Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven. 11. John 17:5, 24; 5Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was. 24Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. 12. Gen 5:1-2 This is the book of the generations of Adam. Gal 3:27-28 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 14. Acts 2:17-18 ‘And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, ‘That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams; Even on My bondslaves, both men and women, I will in those days pour forth of My spirit and they shall prophesy. 15. Joel 2:28-29 “It will come about after this That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and

Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” 18. John 16:7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. Luke 1:46-47 And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior" 25. Luke 12:20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?’" 26. Luke 23:46 And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.” Having said this, He breathed His last. 27. Rom 5:12Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned— 13for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. 28. Ps 58:3 The wicked are estranged from the womb; these who speak lies go astray from birth. 29. Ps 51: Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me.

30. Titus 1:15 To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their mind and their conscience are defiled. 31. Jer 17:9 “The heart is more deceitful than all else / And is desperately sick; Who can understand it? 32. Rom 3:25-26 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. Rom 8:13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

Heb 4:15-16 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. 16Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. 13. Rom 3:25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. 33. 1 Jn 4:10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 34. 2 Cor 5:18-19 Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, 19namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation. 35. Mark 10:45 “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” 36. VIII. The Doctrine of Redemption (Part 1) 1. Matt 5:44-45 “But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 2. Rom 1:21 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 3. Luke 6:33 “If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 4. Rom 2:14-15 For when Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves, in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them, 5. Rom 13:1, 4 Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God… for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil. 6. Rom 14:23 and whatever is not from faith is sin. 7. 2 Peter 3:9-10 The Lord is not slow about His

promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. 8. Ps 145:9 The LORD is good to all, And His mercies are over all His works. 9. Rom 2:5 But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God 10. Gen 1:27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 11. Acts 13:48; When the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord; and as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed. 12. Eph 1:4-6, 12; just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved… to the end that we who were the first to hope in Christ would be to the praise of His glory. 13. 1 Thess 1:4-5; knowing, brethren beloved by God, His choice of you; for our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake.

14. 2 Thess 2:13 But we should always give thanks to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth. 15. 1 Peter 1: Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who reside as aliens, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, who are chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours in the fullest measure. 16. Eph 1:5-6 (see previous) 17. 2 Tim 2:10 For this reason I endure all things for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus and with it eternal glory. 18. 2 Tim 1:9, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity, 19. Rom 9:11-13, for though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that God’s purpose according to His choice would stand, not because of works but because of Him who calls, it was said to her, “The older will serve the younger.” Just as it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.” 20. Rom 11:5-6, In the same way then, there has

also come to be at the present time a remnant according to God’s gracious choice. But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace. 21. Eph 1:5-6 (see previous) 22. Jude 4, For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. 23. Rom 9:17-22, For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I raised you up, to demonstrate My power in you, and that My name might be proclaimed throughout the whole earth.” So then He has mercy on whom He desires, and He hardens whom He desires. You will say to me then, “Why does He still find fault? For who resists His will?” On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God? The thing molded will not say to the molder, “Why did you make me like this,” will it? Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for common use? What if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction? 24. Rom 11:7, What then? What Israel is seeking, it has not obtained, but those who were chosen obtained it, and the rest were hardened;

25. 1 Peter 2:8 and, “A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense”; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed. 26. Rom 8:30 and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified. 27. John 6:44, “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day. 28. Acts 16:14 A woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple fabrics, a worshiper of God, was listening; and the Lord opened her heart to respond to the things spoken by Paul. 29. Acts 20:21 solemnly testifying to both Jews and Greeks of repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. 30. 2 Thes 2:14 It was for this He called you through our gospel, that you may gain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 31. Rom 10:14 How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? 32. Rom 3:23, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 33. Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. 34. Rom 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we

were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 35. John 1:11-12 He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. 36. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 37. Acts 10:44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message. 38. Eph 2:1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 39. Acts 16:14 (see previous) 40. 1 Cor 2:14, But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. 41. John 6:65 And He was saying, “For this reason I have said to you, that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted him from the Father.” 42. Rom 8:7-8 because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 43. 1 John 5:1, Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and

whoever loves the Father loves the child born of Him. 44. 1 John 3:9, No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 45. 1 John 5:18 We know that no one who is born of God sins; but He who was born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him.

46. John 3:3-8 Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he

cannot enter into the kingdom of God. “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. “Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ “The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

IX. The Doctrine of Redemption (Part 2) 1. Rom. 10:14 How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?

2. John 3:2 this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”

3. John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

4. James 2:19 You believe that £God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.

5. 2 Cor 7:9-10 I now rejoice, not that you were made sorrowful, but that you were made sorrowful to the point of repentance; for you were made sorrowful according to the will of God, so that you might not suffer loss in anything through us. 10For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.

6. Heb 12:17 For you know that even afterwards, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought for it with tears.

7. Matt 6:12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 8. Gal 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

9. Rom 3:20 because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.

10. Rom 8:1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

11. Isaiah 61:10 I will rejoice greatly in the LORD, My soul will exult in my God; For He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

12. Rom 5:19 For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.

13. Rom 4:6 just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works.

14. Rom 5:17 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who

receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.

15. 1 Cor 1:30 But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption.

16. Rom 3:20 because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.

17. Titus 3:7 so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

18. Gal 2:16 nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.

19. Eph 2:8-10 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

20. Rom 4:16 For this reason it is by faith, in order that it

may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.

21. John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name.

22. Gal 3:23-26 But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed. 24Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. 25But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. 26For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

23. 1 John 3:1 See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.

24. Gal 4:7 Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.

25. Ps 103:13-14 Just as a father has compassion on his children, So the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him. For He Himself knows our frame; He is mindful that we are but dust.

26. Heb 12:5-7, 10 and you have forgotten the

exhortation which is addressed to you as sons, “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, Nor faint when you are reproved by Him; 6 For those whom the Lord loves He disciplines, And He scourges every son whom He receives.” 7 It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness.

27. Rom 8:12 So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.

28. James 1:2 Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials.

29. Phil 2:12 So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling.

30. 1 Cor 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me.

31. Gal 3:1-5 You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? 2This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by

hearing with faith? 3Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? 4Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? 5So then, does He who provides you with the Spirit and works miracles among you, do it by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith?

32. Col 2:6 Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him.

33. 1 Cor 6:11 Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.

34. Rom 6:17-18 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, 18and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.

35. Phil 3:13-14 Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, 14I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

36. Matt 6:11-12 Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

37. 1 Kings 8:46 When they sin against You (for there is

no man who does not sin) and You are angry with them and deliver them to an enemy, so that they take them away captive to the land of the enemy, far off or near.

38. Prov 20:9 Who can say, “I have cleansed my heart, I am pure from my sin”?

39. Eccl 7:20 Indeed, there is not a righteous man on earth who continually does good and who never sins.

40. Heb 12:14 Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord.

41. Rom 8:12-13 So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

42. Ps 37:4 Delight yourself in the LORD; And He will give you the desires of your heart.

43. Heb 12:10 For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us

for our good, so that we may share His holiness.

44. Matt 7:11 “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!"

45. Luke 11:13 “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”

X. The Doctrine of Redemption (Part 3) 1. 1 Cor 12:13 For by one

Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

2. Acts 2:16 But this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel.

3. 1 Peter 1:5 who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

4. John 6:38-40 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. 39“This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day. 40“For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”

5. John 10:27-29 “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; 28and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. 29“My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand."

6. Eph 1:13-14 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14who is given

as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.

7. 1 Pet 1:5 who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

8. John 8:31-32 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

9. Col 1:22-23 yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach— 23if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister.

10. Heb 3:14 For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end.

11. 1 John 2:19 They went out from us, but they were not really of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out, so that it would be shown that they all are not of us.

12. John 15:1-7 1“I am the true vine, and My Father

is the vinedresser. 2“Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He £prunes it so that it may bear more fruit. 3“You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. 5“I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. 6“If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned. 7“If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

13. Mark 4:16-17 “In a similar way these are the ones on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy; 17and they have no firm root in themselves, but are only temporary; then, when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately they fall away."

14. Matt 7:21-23 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in

heaven will enter. 22“Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ 23“And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’"

15. Rom 8:1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

16. Heb 12:6, 10-11 6"For those whom the Lord loves He disciplines, And He scourges every son whom He receives.” 10For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness. 11All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.

17. 2 Cor 5:8 we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord.

18. Phil 1:21-23 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which to choose. 23But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better;

19. Acts 8:2 Some devout

men buried Stephen, and made loud lamentation over him.

20. John 11:35 Jesus wept. 21. Luke 23:43 And He said

to him, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.”

22. 2 Cor 5:8 we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord.

23. Luke 16:24-26 “And he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.’ 25“But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony.'"

24. Heb 9:26 Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now once at the consummation of the ages He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.

25. 2 Cor 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

26. Rom 2:5-10 5But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of

wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6who will render to each person according to his deeds: 7to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life; 8but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and indignation. 9There will be tribulation and distress for every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek, 10but glory and honor and peace to everyone who does good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

27. 1 Cor 15:22-23, 51-52 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. 23But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, after that those who are Christ’s at His coming, 51Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, 52in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

28. 1 Cor 15:24-44, 49 24then comes the end, when He hands over the kingdom to the God and Father, when He has abolished all rule and all authority and power. 25For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet. 26The last enemy that will be abolished is death. 27For He has put all things in subjection under His feet. But when He says, “All things are put in

subjection,” it is evident that He is excepted who put all things in subjection to Him. 28When all things are subjected to Him, then the Son Himself also will be subjected to the One who subjected all things to Him, so that God may be all in all. 29Otherwise, what will those do who are baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why then are they baptized for them? 30Why are we also in danger every hour? 31I affirm, brethren, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily. 32If from human motives I fought with wild beasts at Ephesus, what does it profit me? If the dead are not raised, let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die. 33Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.” 34Become sober-minded as you ought, and stop sinning; for some have no knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame. 35But someone will say, “How are the dead raised? And with what kind of body do they come?” 36You fool! That which you sow does not come to life unless it dies; 37and that which you sow, you do not sow the body which is to be, but a bare grain, perhaps of wheat or of something else. 38But God gives it a body just as He wished, and to each of the seeds a body of its own. 39All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one flesh of men, and another flesh of beasts, and another flesh of birds, and another of fish. 40There are also heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is one, and the glory of the

earthly is another. 41There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory. 42So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown a perishable body, it is raised an imperishable body; 43it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; 44it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 49Just as we have borne the image of the earthy, we will also bear the image of the heavenly. 29. John 20:20, 27 And when

He had said this, He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 27Then He said* to Thomas, “Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.”

30. Luke 9:30, 33 And behold, two men were talking with Him; and they were Moses and Elijah. 33And as these were leaving Him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles: one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not realizing what he was saying.

31. Gen 3:17-19 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’; Cursed is the ground

because of you; In toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. 18 “Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; And you will eat the plants of the field; 19 By the sweat of your face you will eat bread, Till you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return.”

32. Rom 8:19, 22-23 For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. 22For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. 23And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body.

33. Eph 1:4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love

34. 2 Tim 1:9 who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity,

35. 2 Tim 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, according to the promise of life in Christ Jesus,

36. Rom 15:17 Therefore in Christ Jesus I have found reason for boasting in things pertaining to God.

you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing."

38. Col 1:27 to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

39. 1 John 2:6 the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.

40. Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her,

41. Rom 15:7 Therefore, accept one another, just as Christ also accepted us to the glory of God.

42. 1 John 1:3 we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the

Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ.

43. Matt 28:20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

44. 1 Cor 1:9 God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

45. Heb 6:12 so that you will not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

46. Rom 8:14-16 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” 16The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children

of God, 2 Peter 1:5-10 Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, 6and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, 7and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. 8For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins. 10Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble;

XI. The Doctrine of the Church 1. Eph 5:25 Husbands, love

your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her,

2. Eph 5:32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

3. 1 Pet 2:5 you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

4. 1 Cor 12:12 For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ.

5. Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

6. Eph 1:12 to the end that we who were the first to hope in Christ would be to the praise of His glory.

7. Col 1:28 We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ.

8. Eph 4:12-13 for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to

the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.

10. Luke 6:35-36 “But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men. “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

11. 2 Cor 10:3-4 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses.

12. Rom 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.

13. Matt 22:21 They said to Him, “Caesar’s.” Then He said to them, “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s.”

14. John 18:36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.”

15. Gal 6:1 Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a

19. 1 Cor 5:2, 6-7 You have become arrogant and have not mourned instead, so that the one who had done this deed would be removed from your midst. 6Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough? Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed.

20. Rom 2:24 For “The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,” just as it is written.

of immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols. 14‘But I have a few things against you, because you have there some who hold the teaching of Balaam, who kept teaching Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols and to commit acts of immorality. 15‘So you also have some who in the same way hold the teaching of the Nicolaitans. 16‘Therefore repent; or else I am coming to you quickly, and I will make war against them with the sword of My mouth.

29. 1 Tim 3:2 An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,

30. Titus 1:9 holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.

31. 1 Tim 3:2-7 An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money. He must be one who manages his own household well,

keeping his children under control with all dignity (but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?)...

32. Acts 6:1-6 Now at this time while the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint arose on the part of the Hellenistic Jews against the native Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food. So the twelve summoned the congregation of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable for us to neglect the word of God in order to serve tables. “Therefore, brethren, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task. “But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” The statement found approval with the whole congregation;

34. Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

36. Col 2:12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

37. 1 Cor 10:17 Since there is one bread, we who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one bread.

times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,

39. 2 Chron. 5:13-14 40. 2 Cor 7:10 For the

sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.

41. 2 Cor 9:7, 8:5 Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8:5 and this, not as we had expected, but they first gave themselves to the Lord and to us by the will of God.

42. 1 Pet 4:10 As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

44. Heb 10:24-25 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.

45. Acts 9:17 with Acts 9:20 So Ananias departed and

entered the house, and after laying his hands on him said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road by which you were coming, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, saying, “He is the Son of God.”

46. Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

47. Eph 4:29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.

48. Matt 16:18 “I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.

XII. The Doctrine of the Future 1. Heb 11:24-26 By faith

Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25choosing rather to endure ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, 26considering the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he was looking to the reward.

2. 2 Cor 7:1 Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

3. 2 Pet 1:4 For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.

4. 1 Thess 4:16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

5. Rev 22:20 He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming quickly.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

6. John 14:3 If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.

7. Titus 2:12-13 instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and

to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, 13looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus.

8. Acts 1:11 They also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.”

9. Matt 24:44 “For this reason you also must be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will.

10. Rev 20:1-10 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. 2And he laid hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; 3and he threw him into the abyss, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he would not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were completed; after these things he must be released for a short time. 4Then I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast

or his image, and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand; and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 5The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were completed. This is the first resurrection. 6Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand years. 7When the thousand years are completed, Satan will be released from his prison, 8and will come out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together for the war; the number of them is like the sand of the seashore. 9And they came up on the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, and fire came down from heaven and devoured them. 10And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

11. Rev 20:11-15 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled

away, and no place was found for them. 12And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. 13And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. 14Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

12. Rom 2:5 But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God.

14. Rom 2:5-7 But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6who will render to each person according to his deeds: 7to those who

by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life;

15. Rom 14:10, 12 But you, why do you judge your brother? Or you again, why do you regard your brother with contempt? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. 12So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God.

16. John 5:24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.

17. Luke 19:17,19 “And he said to him, ‘Well done, good slave, because you have been faithful in a very little thing, you are to be in authority over ten cities.’ 19“And he said to him also, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’

18. 2 Pet 2:4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment;

19. 1 Cor 6:2-3 Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? If the world is judged by you, are you not competent to constitute the smallest law courts? 3Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more matters of this life?

20. Rom 2:2, 11 And we know that the judgment of God rightly falls upon those who practice such

things. 11For there is no partiality with God;

21. Rom 3:19 Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God;

22. Rev 19:1-2 After these things I heard something like a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, “Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God; 2because His judgments are true and righteous; for He has judged the great harlot who was corrupting the earth with her immorality, and He has avenged the blood of His bond-servants on her.”

23. Matt 25:30, 41, 46 Throw out the worthless slave into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 41 “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; 46 46“These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.

24. Isa 66:1 Thus says the LORD, “Heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool. Where then is a house you could build for Me? And where is a place that I may rest?

25. Acts 1:11 They also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from

you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.”

26. Rom 8:19-21 For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. 20For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope 21that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God.

27. 2 Pet 3:10, 13 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. 13But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.

28. Rev 21:1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea.

29. Heb 2:8-9 You have put all things in subjection under his feet.” For in subjecting all things to him, He left nothing that is not subject to him. But now we do not yet see all things subjected to him. 9But we do see Him who was made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, so that

by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone.

30. Matt 5:5 “Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.”

32. Rev 21:3-4, 22:3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, 4and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.” 22:3 There will no longer be any curse; and the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His bond-servants will serve Him;

33. Ps 16:11 You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.

34. Gen 13:7-18 And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. Now the Canaanite and the Perizzite were dwelling then in the land.8So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no

strife between you and me, nor between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are brothers. 9“Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me; if to the left, then I will go to the right; or if to the right, then I will go to the left.” 10Lot lifted up his eyes and saw all the valley of the Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere—this was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah—like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt as you go to Zoar. 11So Lot chose for himself all the valley of the Jordan, and Lot journeyed eastward. Thus they separated from each other. 12Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled in the cities of the valley, and moved his tents as far as Sodom. 13Now the men of Sodom were wicked exceedingly and sinners against the LORD.14The LORD said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “Now lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward; 15for all the land which you see, I will give it to you and to your descendants forever. 16“I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth, so that if anyone can number the dust of the earth, then your descendants can also be numbered. 17“Arise, walk about the land through its length

and breadth; for I will give it to you.” 18Then Abram moved his tent and came and dwelt by the oaks of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and there he built an altar to the LORD.

35. Heb 12:1-2 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

36. 1 Peter 2:22-23 who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; 23and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously.
