Deacon Peter writes....

Dear WFA Fellowship,

I am often asked what I do.

I could say I am a builder, or a poet, or a student or a Deacon. These things certainly signify my identity, but as a Christian, what is most important? Is it

attending church or doing a ministry or service in the church?

Whatever we do we are now not simply Christians, but a Holy Priesthood to the world; this is the identity God gives us all (1 Peter 2:4). Because we have accepted Christ and live his message in our lives, 2 Cor. 5:17 says, “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” And in verses 20 -21: “Therefore we are ambassadors for

Christ, as though God was making His appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ: be reconciled to God. God made him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.”

In a nutshell this is what we have become, and who we now are.

We have been discussing stewardship and the survival of our parish. The practical things are important, but we must never forget to be a people the world will see and know as living the truth. This is such a powerful fact because when we live for Christ, Christ lives in our fellowship, and it is His fragrance in us that will draw others to join us in celebrating our real and living Saviour. It is when we stand and say we know we are citizens of God’s Kingdom that our identity becomes more than mere membership of a church. Deacon Pete

We welcomed another member of Brenton's extended family into our church family, baby Brookyn, last Sunday. A very amiable and happy little girl with a full church to witness her baptism. May she continue to grow in God's grace. Photo: EA Susan Smith, Fr Brenton, and Brooklyn

Last Friday evening, we dined in style at St Margaret's shared dinner. Seventeen of us showed off our culinary skills to one another and there weren't too many leftovers... Fran's pavlova plate emptied fastest! It was especially good to welcome back Harry and Sylvia Francis after long illness. Some of the mob (see Trish Frith and Fr Brenton, left) competed in a game of bocce! We look forward to our feast next month, so keep an eye out

for the date and don't miss it! Folk from the other centres are most welcome to attend as well.

News from St Margaret’s, McLaren Vale

Our garage sale on Saturday, 20th October made $800 on the day and $1200 prior to that, which was wonderful. And in addition, it was good being together, having fun and sharing our experience…

Greg John attended Safer Ministries Training update at St Hilary's church... so he's all up to date, unlike his forgetful offsider...ahem, that would be me..

John Carroll is striding it out now his knees are healing well.... Jac Hocking has been helping her mother celebrate her 80th birthday on Kangaroo Island.... Lorna McGaffin is waiting for surgery happening next month.... Judith Wells is returning to the fold having traipsed all over Europe for the past few weeks… we look forward to hearing all about her travels! Sr Bev is in hospital—please keep her in your prayers.

God continues to bless us through Fr Brenton and his wife Lyn.... we give thanks for the way they have thrown themselves into parish activities, and that rectory garden is looking great… not sure about your back though Lyn?? Both hard working treasures!

News from St Stephen’s, Willunga

Saturday mornings in October at St Stephen’s have been surprising busy. Thanks to Anne, Alexis, Wendy and Ted. A variety of people come by to chat or tell of relatives who were baptised or married, or just attended this church. A few come in for quiet prayer or just a chat over tea and biscuits. Besides a brochure to hand out, there is jam for sale as there are many people who park in the grounds or pass by on their way to the Farmers Market. A few donations as thanks for car parking.

The Saturday Night Out on Saturday October 13th was attended by 15 people, with visitors Barrie & Janet Bowden and friends of Fr Brenton’s, Ron & Jan Flintoff, from Goolwa. Barrie played for his supper, by graciously providing music for the service before the dinner. Several years ago Barrie serviced the St Stephen’s reed organ.

Thank you Ben Lacey for cutting the grass, tidying up around the trees and poisoning along the fences.

Thanks to Fr Simon and Margaret Cale for their evening service and Parish Ministry presentation on Saturday October 21st. The St Stephen's regular members were present and reflected on the information during nibbles, cheese and drinks.

The request for feedback to the Bishop Election Committee chair, Dr Robert Tong, was discussed on Saturday October 28th and notes forwarded to the WFA Council November meeting.

We wish Jac Bishop a speedy recovery. It’s never quite the same without her beautiful flower arrangements. Ted Sandercock & John Strachan, Wardens

Schools Ministry Sausage Sizzle

On Saturday October 13th the weather was great and there were lots of people at the three Willunga markets. We sold all 12 kg of sausages and made a surplus of $238 for Southern Vales Schools Ministry.

The morning began with Ted helping Trevor Lloyd (SVSM Treasurer) set up the stall . It was then staffed by Bill, Margaret, Di, Rupert, Fr Dennis, Laura, John and Fr Brenton. John and Fr Brenton assisted Trevor and Ted pack up.

Sue Camac (Willunga Primary School chaplain) will visit on November 10th.

Our November sausage sizzle on Saturday 10th will be from 8.30 am until 1.00 pm . If you would like to help raise funds for Schools Ministry—and have an enjoyable hour or so meeting the Southern Vales market community—give Ted a ring on 8556 4535.

News from St Nicholas’, Seaford (Seaford Christian Churches)

People with news of coming events or noteworthy happenings in the Pastoral District of Southern Vales to share with the rest of the parish,

please contact the Editor, Anne Chittleborough, at 23 The Esplanade, Pt Willunga 5173, Ph 8556 5078 or email [email protected],

preferably by the 15th of November. Please notify the Editor if you wish to avoid the chance of being mentioned in this newsletter .

Ministry This month Fr Simon, Father Dennis and Father Ted ministered to us at services during the month. Cathy More has been our weekly pianist, with Bernice Elford from the UCA at Seaford stepping in to help when Cathy was taking part in the “Big Sing” in September. Our usual 5th Sunday combined service with the UCA and Church of Christ congregations was led by Fr Ted and Rev Bernice. It is always a blessing to worship together and raise our voices as one congregation. The Christmas Child boxes were blessed at our service on the 28th October and will be forwarded to those in most need.

Youth Worship Our youth service this month again followed the Gospel of Mark with Jesus healing Bartimaeus and restoring his sight. The reflection and drama, based on this gospel reading, encouraged us all to trust in God and remember he is always ready to hear our call for help. This month’s service also included the baptism of Brenton, one of our regular young worshippers. It was wonderful to be able to be part of this and to welcome him into God’s family at Seaford. Brenton and Issy worked hard putting together the service with Father Simon on hand to ensure all the right bits were included! Brenton chose all the hymns, so as you can imagine, we had lots of lively singing. A joyous occasion for everyone!

The Sunday Arvo service, led by the older youth group, reflected on a passage from the Old

Front L-R: Issy, Maddison, Sophie, Brenton Back: Helen Cook (presented gifts from St Nicholas’ and from MU), Fr Simon, godmother Lynn Hann.

Testament: “Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged.” (Deut 31:6) ; an appropriate text for young people facing end-of-year exams!

Fellowship Helen and Colin Cook have finally arrived back in Seaford and are already embroiled in things at SCC (SEM). We will try not to work them too hard – they may go away again!! Betty Leske is home and back in church each week along with Fr Percy. The surgery was very successful, and she now has better movement and hardly any pain.

Our Quiz Night on Saturday 27th was a great social occasion with lots of fun and laughter over some of the quizzes

and questions. The lucky winners went away with chockies and wine and plan to be back to challenge all comers at our next Quiz Night. We raised $250 which will be donated to parish funds.

We are again supporting the Christmas Hampers at SCC with donations coming from all congregations. The initial boxes are purchased from Foodbank at $46 each to which goodies are added for Christmas. Our Christmas lunch at SCC will be held on Tuesday 18th December with the Café catering for us as usual.

SCC (SEM) Our AGM is to be held on the 20th November at 7pm when the Steering Committee will make its recommendation to the congregations regarding our way forward. The constitution will have to be amended to reflect this and will be voted on later in the year. Hopefully this will all result in another lowering of the lease payments, easing pressure on the various congregations.

Thursday November 22nd will be our Advent Ecumenical service at 5pm at SCC (SEM) and will be followed by a meal at a local eatery. All welcome to join us.

News from Yankalilla & Delamere

Christmas is coming! Our annual Strawberry fete will be held on Saturday 17th November, 9 am until noon. We will have all our usual stalls – cakes, plants, white elephant, morning tea, strawberries, etc. This is a good opportunity to buy a plant for a Christmas present for a gardener friend or partner, or just come along and enjoy the morning and pick up a bargain for yourself.

If you are wanting specifically to buy Christmas items, look out for our Christmas stall at Normanville Mall on Saturday 15th Dec. 9 am to 1 pm. At this stall we will be selling Christmas cards and decorations, gifts, and cakes & biscuits.

Christmas Petunia Display. We will be having this floral display again this Christmas in front of Christ Church. The petunia seedlings (red and white) have already been pur-chased and parishioners are growing them on for the display. If you would like to add petunias to the display just before Christmas, that would be most wel-come. On Christmas morning people attending the ser-vice will be invited to take home a pot or two of petunias. Members of the community are also welcome to help themselves to pots on Christmas day and afterwards. We just ask that you do not take them before Christmas day.

Our monthly Sunday afternoon services continue at ACH and are well supported. Fr Simon has produced a service sheet for home services which is simple and straightforward so that we do not need to have a minister – though it’s always good to have one visit this remote part of the empire.

Blessing of the Fleece Service This will be held on Sunday

25th November at the shearing shed of Ann and Rob

Ryan, at 11 am. The address is 236 Tent Rock Rd, Deep

Creek. Although this will not be the only service in the

pastoral district, as was the case last year, everyone is

welcome to join us. It will be followed by a BBQ lunch.

Bring along a salad or sweet and drinks.

Our Christmas services this year will be: 9th December Community Carols at Normanville Showground – time TBA but usually about 7pm. 24th December St James’, Delamere at 7pm, followed by drinks 24th December Christ Church, Yankalilla, at 9 pm 25th December Christmas Day service at Christchurch, Yankalilla at 9 am

Ron King & Margaret Morgan.

Parishioners profile:

John and Margaret Morgan John & Margaret Morgan first met on the railway platform at Marree in the far north of South Australia. John, who was working at Marree, was a member of the Primary School Council. It was January 1971 and teachers were arriving to start the new school year. John met two of the teachers at the railway station. One of them was Margaret. Later that year John and Margaret decided to return to Adelaide to prepare a future together.

Married in 1972, they set up home in Henley Beach and worshipped at St Michael’s, Margaret’s family church. They raised four children, two girls and two boys. John worked for Telstra and Margaret ran a small business called “Thumbelina” dealing in needlework supplies.

Time moved on. Margaret commenced a Doctor of Philosophy degree at Adelaide University, centred on Oxford University in the UK, and in 1986 they left for the UK, where they lived for a few months, Margaret researching her PhD at Oriel College.

Eventually John retired, and the children left home for work. It was time to make a change. In 2005 John and Margaret moved to Bald Hills via Yankalilla on the Fleurieu Peninsula and began worshipping at Christ Church, Yankalilla.

They now have five grandchildren. Margaret is very involved with the Yankalilla Historical Society and is the secretary of the Anglican Guild. John visits the coffee shops at Yankalilla and Normanville each day, plays tennis and is a member of the “Normanville White Caps”, a swimming group that meets each morning at the beach.

John and Margaret both assist on the roster duties each Sunday at Christ Church.

Pray for Peace

St Ann’s Tuesday 20th November

11 am—12 noon Prayer, meditation.

Light a candle for peace.

Shared refreshments to follow

The meeting was held at SCC, and was chaired by Ted Sandercock. Matters discussed included the following:

Strategic Directions: Fr Simon and the Treasurer, Margaret Cale, had been doing a “Travelling road show” visiting each church to talk about a shared mission plan and our priorities, and the cost of putting it into action. Feedback on the presentation from the churches visited so far had been positive. We need to look very seriously at our future and explore other ways of covering our costs: if we continue as we are, we cannot afford to continue to pay two priests, and this would have implications for our whole parish life and programme. We need to explore and seriously consider what this would mean to us.

In her Finance Report Margaret observed that we were staying within budget in our expenses, but not in our income. The diocesan funds for Home Mission and

Ministry Training (each $980) had not been well subscribed to but would have to be met. The best way would be to spread these over the whole year.

WFA would be contributing to the Aldinga Advent Pageant ($100) and the Aldinga Community Carols ($250) both of which were well supported outreach to the community and a means of promoting our Christmas services.

The sale of St Philip & St James’, Old Noarlunga (see also p. 1): It is being advertised and will go to auction on Saturday 10th November. Thanks to Rupert and Di Best, Fr Brenton and Lyn, Fr Simon, Jeff McHugh, Greg John and Julia Drought for their work cleaning up and tidying up. The pews and the organs will be sold at the same auction. Some items have gone to Willunga House and will continue to be used for sacred purposes – the prayer desk and lectern, the bishop’s chair and some of the linen. The handworked kneelers have gone to St Stephen’s, along with a booklet with photos and information about those who made them. The chalice, patten and ciborium have gone to St Ann’s. Historical photos will be offered to the National Trust at Willunga.

The Safe Ministry Training the previous weekend had been poorly attended. Next year the refresher course would be available online. A Child Safe Environments (Mandatory Reporting) course to be held at Victor Har-bor on Saturday 27th October and 3 hour Safe Ministry refresher course at Mt Barker on Sat. 10th November and Goolwa on Fri. 23rd November.

The Yankalilla Rectory: decisions on its future will be delayed to the December meeting. A rolling lease will be convenient at this stage for both the church and the lessee.

Fr Simon mentioned that he was setting aside some hours of the week to spend time with people not involved with the church, or who would not feel comfortable in our churches. AC

Next WFA Council meeting Tuesday 13th November .

News from St Ann’s, Aldinga

This current month has been a month of birthdays! We congratulate those who have celebrated.

We remembered the wedding in the US of our friends Jon and Morgan Brown on the 13th September. Morgan and Jon will be back with us briefly again in early December.

On that same day we welcomed two visitors from New Jersey, USA who are currently holidaying in Aldinga and visiting family while here.

We thank Fr Dennis once again for his valued services to us. His homilies are much appreciated so we keep the Tim Tams on tap…

We were also very glad to welcome Fr Brenton and his wife Lyn to our centre last Sunday - his first service with us after three months in the district. We hope that we are able to experience his input to our worship on a regular basis!

We currently welcome Brian back to the fold following his well earned holiday abroad! Many, many thanks to Felicity who capably filled his shoes at the organ while he was away.

We also welcome back Julie and Stephen after their early return following health issues while overseas. We are glad to see them back safe and sound and continue to pray for Stephen’s recovery.

We are very pleased to have received for our use the ciborium and patten from St Philip & St James’ church.

What an amazing job our gardening team has done! The garden is full of colour, and a number of people have commented on the garden along the north fence of the cemetery.

Eight people from our congregation attended the required Mandatory Reporting training at Victor Harbor on Sat. 27th.

On Sunday 28th we took the offered opportunity to write feedback to the Bishop Election Committee on what we saw as the strengths and challenges of our Diocese, and what qualities we would look for in a bishop.

We were also among the many Australian churches that day to write to our politicians about the tragic condition of the asylum seekers on Manus Island and Nauru. Pat Roper & Brian McMillan, Wardens
