As always, I was prompted by my professors with solving a problem. Choosing a thesis topic was more of a choice between millions of problems then my areas of interest. I saw a problem in the connections between professionals with business skills, and non-profits who need those skills the most.

I proposed to learn through experience the aspects of social media interface design. To create a connection engine that connects local and non-profit organizations (need) with programmers, Illustrators, artists, etc, with a skill. To support the “good design for everyone” movement. To create an easy grant search to inspire non-profits to keep working for the funds to get their projects completed.

In 7 months, I researched all aspects of the project, reaped the data to inform a direction, found answers, and designed a solution. My deliverables are the collection of my research; a fully designed static website, examples of motion responses, a context scenario video, and a visual summary of my work.

Young and less-established professionals are often left to take projects for issues and organizations that they are uninterested in or disagree with, out of necessity. Either because they can not find work that interests them, or that work can not pay them adequately. Non-profits and local businesses often cannot acquire smart branding, or fully functioning websites because they don’t see the importance, know where to look, or have the funds to afford it. I think there is a way to connect eager people with a skill, to businesses that do good, and spread good design in every community.

A symbiotic relationship between the professionals and the organizations. A website that prompts professionals and businesses to make brief profiles highlighting the organization’s mission and the professional’s experience and skill. organizations post projects with the pay they can afford. Professionals can search the project listings for interesting opportunities or interesting organizations and know that they will be compensated for their work. organizations respect that the professionals may have full time jobs or course work. Professionals recognize that organizations are not corporations with corporate funding. To help non-profits and local businesses budget their projects, there is a grant support portion of the website. It collects grants and organizes them by eligibility and application date. There is also grant application support with tips and examples to help non-profits better tell their story. Established designers and design firms can offer to go pro-bono on projects to spread the ideas of designing for good.

Research

My research began by identifying the users, stakeholders, and methodologies of the systems surrounding the problem. My focus was on local Columbus non-profits, and business-related professionals, specifically designers. I started researching a general understanding of my problem, then moved into the specifics of non-profit desires and freelance motivators, and how those two groups can collaborate with each other.

Non-profit organizations vary in their resources, budgets, and needs. What they have in common is that 100% of their funds go to expanding their outreach, improving their service, and helping their audience. This means no funding for nonessentials, and a close watch on the budget. Non-profits often have business needs, such as design work, that they cannot allocate sufficient funds to. Non-profits desire inexpensive or pro-bono professional help.

Branding for Non-profits by dK holland

Non-profits need to consider their brand just like any for-profit or corporation. The non-profit world is full of fuzzy brands mostly because non-profit organizations are too busy focusing on service delivery or fund-raising to consider the core work of branding.

When design materials are paid for from grants and fundraising, organizations appear resourceful and valued.

Many non-profits are too quick to hand over the organization’s branding to an outside consultant and assume a reactive role instead of being involved in the branding.

13

Page 13: Groupwork Process and Research Document

There are non-profit specific, design brief guidelines, that protect both parties with a small budget.

Professionals should learn the basics of branding for a low budget, no maintenance client.

There is a list of helpful questions to ask a non-profit when branding them, as well as strategies for helping them move through the brand process.

Work with a client rather than for by determining a brand leader, or an internal member of the organization who carries the brand decisions though the board, coworkers, and clients.

I had an idea about how the design work was done in the non-profit sphere, however I wanted to get a 1st person understanding. I asked area non-profits to answer a few questions about their experience with designers, freelance work, and budgeting that work.

My take aways were that design work was primarily done in house by someone with marginal design skills. design work was also freelanced out or done by a volunteer.

It was never an essential part of the budget.

15

Page 15: Groupwork Process and Research Document

How were their design elements (logo, website, etc) developed?• Worked with a freelance designer / allows them easy access• Created in-house and reviewed annually• Volunteers for the organization• Had several local companies bid on the project.• Staff, volunteers, or board members who happened to have time and enough design skills to get by.

Have they ever worked with a freelance designer, programmer, or marketer?8/10 have worked with a freelancer.

If yes, how was their experience?7/8 had a good experience

Have they ever used an online resource to acquire freelancers or volunteers? Please explain.2/10 used an online resource.

How important is design in the budget? Not Important!

“fulcrum Creative specializes in creating, elevating, and sustaining brands for organizations that positively impact their communities.”

They are specialists of designing with non-profits. I talked to a lead creative, liz Samuelson, about how fulcrum works and what advice she has for working with non-profits. These are the problems she has identified:

17

Page 17: Groupwork Process and Research Document

1Firms that donate their time. going to a firm for pro-bono or discount priced work seems like

it would be a good way for non-profits to get high quality work for a low price. often firms take on pro-bono work and skimp on quality because they just can’t allocate time for something they aren’t being compensated for.

2 Taking on a student intern. Students are fresh andpassionate about getting hands-on work experience,

but this too has setbacks. The quality of work suffers when an inexperienced student works independently without guidance from a seasoned professional. They are left with only the untrained eyes at the organization editing their work.

There are two websites are currently generating connections between non-profits and professionals. I took a lot of inspiration from what already works in their systems.

freelance work is hard to plan out or predict and it is often unstable. People who freelance are use to that work environment and thrive in it. freelancers are no strangers to doing work for non-profits. What motivates them to do non-profit work vs for-profit work is where groupwork comes in.

freelancers want to be compensated fairly, have new projects, and be there own boss.

freelancers choose to work for non-profits because they believe in the organization’s cause. They can usually have a lot of freedom and they can do as much or as little as they would like if the work is pro bono.

I asked young designers what they would want from a non-profit freelance opportunity. I wanted to see where their values were with that kind of work, and what their experience was in that field.

23

Page 23: Groupwork Process and Research Document

After a survey taken by designers:

Most had done freelance work

They were contacted through word of mouth, personal referrals

They had not used an online resource for freelance work

They would like to do freelance

Slightly more than half would work for a small business or non-profit

linkedIn, Personal site, Behance, Tumblr, and flikr were the most common online portfolios sites.

I used the AIgA’s Adequate survey of design salaries, a freelance calculator called freelanceswtich, and a salary survey on simplyhired to determine the fair compensation rates for groupwork. however I wanted a more robust idea of what people would charge for non-profit work. I conducted a survey of multiple skills to gain more information.

My take aways were that younger people charged less, and overall people charged less for non-profits.

My inspiration for groupwork’s work flow was the design career of Jeremy Tinianow. he is a recently graduated freelance designer, who volunteers and works mainly in the space of non-profits. he is the Creative director of the Columbus Idea foundry and has done work for The Waste-Not Center, and CCAd.

he struggles to find work that inspires him and will let him pay the bills.

from this research I understood what groupwork needed function as and what I needed to strive for with the design. It had to respect and benefit both professionals and organizations equally.

groupwork aims to deliver good work to organizations and compensate the professionals for the work.

groupwork is an opportunity for organizations to receive trusted high-quality work.

groupwork is an opportunity for freelance professionals to make working for non-profits their job.

Advice for working with non-profits Advice for designing with non-profits and a discussion forum for tips on working with Boards of directors.

Enforce locality (area code search)divide the site into cities making it extremely local. Professionals can only take on work in the area that they live.

Build a team / or just one professionalA team of differently-skilled professionals is a great way to strengthen the success of a project, but it also makes it harder to get a project started. Team projects are optional.

Pay everyoneMake working for non-profits your career.

Grant support + budget plansgrant support and financial support to help non-profits factor a design/marketing budget into their yearly budget. have typical costs of services determined and determine how much the organization can budget for those services. Then calculate how extensive the project can be and how long it can take by what they can afford.

determine what an organization wants (value) by how much they can budget. direct them to grant support to find sources for the rest of the funds.

Workflow templatesSuggest workflow templates, and contracts for time lines, payment plans, and copyrights.

Discussion forumThe professional profile can post their work to get feedback from the whole community. Build an online community of people who support non-profits and a place for constructive criticism and idea sharing.

Advice for working with non-profits Every new professional is asked to read a little about working with non-profits before they begin. The article is saved in their “favorites” section for future reference and extended reading.

Encouraged localityThere are benefits to working locally, but it is not required. Projects are listed by relative distance to the professional.

Build a team, or just one professionalorganizations can add more than one professional skill to their projects, and if they need multiple people to fill the multiple skill sets, they can form a team.

Pay everyoneCompensation is required, and fair compensation receives higher traffic. Professionals can volunteer to go pro-bono only after they have been accepted for the project

Grant Support + budget plansgrant support is an entire section of the site available to organizations. They can search for grants and read information on how to apply for them. If a grant ia a fit for a certain organization it will be sent to them in their messages.

Work flow templatesThe site has an integrated project agreement, that also functions as a workflow map. It’s information is generated on both ends and becomes an interactive calendar after it is approved as a formal agreement.

Discussion forumfeedback is a section on the site that organizations can post the progress of their projects. Professionals can get feedback, reviews, and advice from other professionals on groupwork.

Professional profile pages feature the differences between what jobs the user would like to do and what they can do. organizations contact them for their passions vs. their skills.

The projects are written and posted by people with a need and are connected by the titles or skills required for the project. After a project is posted the engine will “connect” and suggest people with like skills.

A “converse” feature that would work like a Reddit thread as a way for people to talk about a projects progress as a whole community.

organization Profiles focus on their mission, their members, and anything that helps professionals understand what kind of organization they are.

Both profiles have a reviews section and a star rating. The reviews are where the professional or organization is reflected on after a collaboration. The star rating is how many times the profile has been saved to someones favorites.

favorites is where members can save anything from groupwork to their profile, including people they would like to work with, articles and projects they want to follow.

NEW PRoJECT

The first step to a new project is creating what professionals will see when the organization posts the project. That is; a brief description, the skills they are looking for, and the people involved. The next step is generating a tentative agreement that the professional will adjust and edit until both parties agree.

57

PRoJECT AgREEMENT

The project agreement has all the elements of a formal agreement, and it acts as a binding statement of work. After both parties agree to the project terms, the agreement also becomes a schedule, active calendar, and payment tracker.

Special thanks to these organizations for responding to my survey

full RESPoNSES

our current website was developed by a company we contracted with in 2010 when we decided we needed an updated look to our site. We worked with a freelance designer to create our current design using Sphere’s Blackbaud services, which allows us easy access to edit the content.

our other branding for event and program materials is created in-house and reviewed annually to make sure it’s consistent and continually appropriate

Camp Sunrise’s materials have been developed by graphic designers that are volunteers for the organization. That includes the website, brochures, videos, letterhead, special event invitations, etc.

how were your design elements developed?

Special thanks Joel diaz and Charles farmer for meeting me in person to answer my questions.

how important is design in your budget?

our current logo design was done in conjunction with our website redesign a few years back, all part of a complete re-branding (which we’ve done a just a few times over our 32-year history). for that process we had several local companies bid on the project.

We had a working group made up of a couple of staff members and a couple of board members who have done most of the recent design work. Some of it has been done by staff, volunteers, or board members who happened to have time and enough design skill to get by.

design is a minimal part of our budget. We depend on staff and community volunteers for most design work.

design is important but it has not impacted the budget to date

Particular projects, like the annual report, will have the work of a design company budgeted in, as will large projects (like a website redesign). Typically, though, we try to do the design work in-house and will out source only a select number of projects every year on an as needed basis.

There has never been a line item set aside for design in our budget per se. We did hire a design intern for the first time this summer.

Being a non profit, we are very budget-conscious. We nearly always try to get design services donated.

design is really not as important as it should be.

We are paying for the website design but it is not much at all.

usually, not a top priority. Next year is our 100th anniversary so we will be budgeting more for design.

They spent about 30,000$ on about 50,000$ worth of work from fulgrin.

Special thanks to Tyler Mitchell, Adam Evans, Alex Safchuk, Jeremy Tinianow, and lexie Alley for letting me use their work as examples.

green Energy ohio and all other organizations on the site are examples and not involved in the project.

Special thanks to Chris Braun, Kaylyn Thomas, Ethan Schaefer, Chris Johnson, lauren grove, Morgan grove, Amber hammond, and Barb McNicholas (my mom) for taking my compensation survey. Special thanks to my mom for helping me with additional sources.
