    GROUP PROJECT BGB2013 JANUARY 2011

    Do the project in a group of 4 to 5 students. The objective of this project is to get students to havea direct contact with an HR practitioner and gain new knowledge and experience from the person.The project should be able to teach students on human development practices in organizations.The person could be any one as long as he/she is handling staff development activities in theorganization. To do this, students must first understand terms like successor, successionplanning, job rotation, job enrichment, job enlargement.

    SUCCESSION PLANNING (Total Marks: 30)

    Your major task is to identify an HR manager or a person in-charge of staff developmentactivities/programs in the organization. These are the questions you MUST ask:

    1. Would it be easy for you to identify a successor if an important position is vacant? Wouldyou identify the potential candidate from within or outside?

    2. Does the company have a formal policy for staff development?

    3. Does top management move future managers around to ensure they experience many

    parts of the organization? (Hint for students: This is like job experience/rotation)

    4. Does top management aggressively move out incumbent managers who areunderperforming in a key role so that ready successors may be moved up?

    5. Do current managers willingly let go when their staff is selected for new roles or fordevelopmental assignments?

    6. How do you identify which employees to be chosen for the development program (for e.g.using performance appraisal, examination, assessment)?

    7. Do you provide these programs to employees:

    a. Job rotationb. Overseas assignments (if any)c. Formal education (short courses, degree programs, workshops, etc)d. Training and development for current and future rolese. Job enlargementf. Transferg. Secondmenth. Mentor/mentee

    8. Explain the challenges or obstacles that are faced in the development program. Forexample, resistance from employees, lack of resources, changing business needs,employees withdraw from the program due to resignation, etc.

    9. How do you perceive the effectiveness of the staff development programs that have beenconducted?

    10. What kinds of incentives you give to high-potential and high-performing employees sothat they stay in the organization?

    11. Malaysian Employers Federation reported that in Malaysia, the labor turnover rate isquite high. Does the organization experience the same thing?
