GROUP 4 DISCUSSION

• We had fun and discussed a variety of issues, some on the list we were given and a host of others.

• General syntheses processes• Data issues• Interdisciplinary work – how do we all approach this?• Observations. Are current observing networks

adequate? Are we invested in some we don’t need?

GROUP 4 DISCUSSION

• But note work of NEON (National Environmental Observing Network) and AON (Arctic Observing Network).

• Modes of variability.• Why not re-occupying previous IPY sites?• Kinds of syntheses. Small/large scale,

contemporary/palaeo.• Cryosphere is unifying theme.• HOW IS ARCTIC DRIVING GLOBAL SYSTEM?

GROUP 4: Main Suggestions

• WHAT ARE BIG PROBLEMS THAT WE CAN SOLVE OR AT LEAST ADDRESS??

We could all see ways in which we could collaborate with other Synthesis projects and potentially produce papers etc.

We also thought that a future workshop could have several Synthesis projects focusing on one main research question.

Ideas we came up with included:

GROUP 4: Main Suggestions

1. A scenario for the future. What would an Ice-free (warm) Arctic be like? What are all the implications for humans, marine mammals, fisheries, climate etc etc??

2. A scenario for the past. Even though we are aware that the present atmospheric situation is very different to that of the past, we felt it would be valuable to look at a time or times in the past when we could make a case for there being an analogue to the present.

3. A contemporary focus linking marine and terrestrial issues
