The DIR FloortimeModel
This conference will provide introductory training in the
DIR Floortime Model developed by Dr. Stanley
Greenspan and Dr. Serena Weider to treat children with
regulatory disorders and children with behaviours that
place them on the autism spectrum. The DIR
(Developmental, Individual Difference, Relationship)
Model is a developmental relationship-based model thatuses therapeutically guided interaction with the child as a
means of moving him/her up the developmental ladder.
Intervention is offered within the context of
developmentally designed play and learning situations.
The DIR Model uses emotional and motivating
experience-based learning to improve social skills,
language, independence, and to teach specific concepts
and academics.
The focus will be on how to encourage developmentally
appropriate interactions for children with various sensory
and developmental profiles, focusing on maintaining a
continuous flow of interactions, opening and closingmultiple circles of communication, and affect regulation.
Affect-based approaches will illustrate how to encourage
the childs initiative, purposeful behaviour, shared
attention, engagement, problem solving, symbolic play,
and abstract thinking. Attention will be given to filling in
gaps in developmental levels, deepening the plot,
emotional constrictions, and conversations critical for
higher level thinking.
Learning Outcomes
After this conference, participants will be able to:
Identify the principles underlying Floortime
Describe the six stages of functional emotional developmen
Explain the specific core capacities that interrupt the
development process (i.e. auditory processing, sensory
reactivity, motor planning, etc.)
Discuss the developmental language model used to
organize treatment protocols
Use and integrate the DIR philosophy in treatment
Describe sensory integration development as it pertains
to the DIR model
Explain occupational therapy and speech therapy co-
treatment strategies and their impact on creating
intentionality
Describe The Greenspan Emotional Growth Chart, the
Functional Emotional Assessment Scale (FEAS), the
Affect Based Language Curriculum, and the DiagnosticManual for Infancy and Early Childhood
Target Audience
This conference will be of interest to occupational therapists
speech language pathologists, physical therapists,
developmental therapists, educators, mental health
professionals, parents, and others who work with children
with social and communication challenges such as autism.

development and has trained extensively with Dr.
Greenspan and Dr. Weider. She is a faculty member withthe Interdisciplinary Council on Developmental and
Learning Disorders (ICDL) and trains other professionals
throughout the United States and overseas on the
theoretical concepts of DIR/Floortime. Sherri diagnoses,
treats, and advocates in inclusive settings for children

young children including children on the autism spectrum
She is NDT trained and is certified in the administration of
the Sensory Integration and Praxis Test (SIPT). Beth is aco-author of the Test of Infant Motor Development (TIMP),

This Conference is being hosted by the
Saskatoon Region Early Childhood Intervention Program
The Saskatoon Region Early Childhood Intervention Program is part of a province wide
network of community based supports for families of children who experience or are at risk
for developmental delays. Early Childhood Intervention Programs utilize a strength based
approach to deliver family focused, home and centre based services to families. This includes
children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The role of the Early Childhood Consultant/
Interventionist focuses on intervention:
to show parents new possibilities for helping their child and improving
family life
to expand the way parents think about goals for their child
to show parents that consistent, focused teaching can result in behaviour
changes that can have a positive impact on family life
to increase the childs independence and his/her ability to participate in
social and community events to ensure the child reaches his/her potential
