S. Environmental Protection Agency Remedial Action Contract (RAC) EP-W-06-021 CH2M HILL Task Order Number 0047 DOCUMENT CONTROL NUMBER: DCN 0047-02018 The purpose of this technical memorandum (TM) is to specify the procedures for completing well yield tests at four monitor wells completed in the water-bearing interbedded zone at the North Cavalcade Street Superfund Site. Well yield testing will be performed to determine the proper ground water classification for the interbedded zone in accordance with the categories specified by the Texas Risk Reduction Program (TRRP). The procedures outlined in this TM are derived from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) regulatory guidance document Groundwater Classification (RG-366/TRRP-8, revised March 2010). This version of this TM incorporates EPA comments received March 31, 2011. Background The well testing data and limited water quality data included in the report entitled “Analysis of CPT/ROST and Well Testing Data” (Kordzi, 1999) suggests that the shallow aquifer and interbedded zone ground water could likely meet the requirements to be considered a Class 2 Ground Water Resource. As noted in the Focused Feasibility Study, however, additional aquifer testing and water quality data would be required to determine definitively whether the water should be considered a Class 2 Ground Water Resource (CH2M HILL, 2008). Well yield tests will be performed, therefore, to confirm whether the interbedded zone in particular should be considered a Class 2 or Class 3 ground water resource under the TRRP specifications. The interbedded zone will most likely remain a Class 2 ground water resource after these tests, but it is expected the tests will demonstrate decreased sustained production in the interbedded zone from east to west, particularly in the offsite downgradient area. Testing Locations Well yield tests will be performed at four monitoring wells in a line roughly east-west across the site. The wells will be tested to determine the ground water classification of the interbedded zone and to assess whether or not the classification changes across the site. The 003097

The purpose of this technical memorandum (TM) is to specify the procedures for completing well yield tests at four monitor wells completed in the water-bearing interbedded zone at the North Cavalcade Street Superfund Site.

The

four wells to be tested are MW-30I, MW-42I, MW-47I, and MW-52I. The locations of these four wells are marked (with red circles) on the attached Figure 1. Recent field forms for each well from the November/ December 2010 well installation and sampling program, including draft well construction diagrams, draft soil boring logs, well development logs, and well purge and sampling field data sheets , are provided as Attachment A to this TM.

Test Procedures The well yield test method to be utilized is identified as Method 2a: Well Yield by Cyclic Discharge in RG-366/TRRP-8. This method is primarily used to test well yield near the Class 2/Class 3 boundary in relatively low-yield ground water bearing units. Method 2a is a cyclic bail down – recovery test. The following procedures are specified from RG-366/TRRP-8 for Method 2a:

1. The monitor well must be fully-penetrating of the ground water zone, have a minimum diameter of 2 inches, and be constructed consistent with the requirements of 16 Texas Administrative Code (TAC) §76.1000-76.1009.

2. Measure the static water level in the well and total well depth. Calculate the water column height in the well, and then determine the depth-to-water level measurement that represents 90% of the initial height of the water column in the well.

3. Using a bailer or a pump, evacuate all water from the well. Record the volume of water removed (to within the nearest 0.1 gallon). Measure the static water level and the time at which the well went dry (for confirmation) immediately upon completion of water removal.

4. Monitor recovery of the water level in the well. Also, record the time of water level measurements during the recovery period as an elapsed time (in minutes/seconds) from the initial time measurement of the completion of water removal. Continue monitoring water level recovery in the well up to the point at which the water level recovers to a specified level that is no greater than 90% of the height of the initial static water level (recorded in Step 2).

5. Immediately upon recovery of the water level in the well to the specified level (not greater than 90% of the initial static water level), repeat steps 3 and 4 twice. This method requires a minimum of three bail-down/recovery cycles to complete the well yield test calculations.

6. After the third recovery period, evacuate all the water from the well a fourth time and record the volume of water removed. A sample for Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) will be collected from the water removed during the fourth bail-down/removal cycle. The testing is now completed.

At the end of testing, ensure that the total volume of water removed is recorded. Ensure that complete and accurate records of the testing are kept in the field logbook. The water level data, recovery time, and volume of water removed from the well are necessary to determine the well yield and ground water classification.
