Filling the gap for comprehensive coverage of the realistic funda-mentals and approaches needed to perform cutting-edge research on mesoscopic systems, this textbook allows advanced students to acquire and use the skills at a highly technical, research-qualifying level. Starting with a brief refresher to get all readers on an equal footing, the text moves on to a broad selection of advanced topics, backed by problems with solutions for use in classrooms as well as for self-study. Written by authors with research and teaching backgrounds from eminent institutions and based on a tried-and-tested lecture, this is a must-have for researchers, research students and instructors involved with semiconductor junctions, nanostructures and thin fi lm systems.

Godfrey A. Gumbs received his undergraduate degree in Ap-plied Mathematics and theoretical physics and his doctorate in condensed matter physics from the University of Toronto. He is currently at the Chianta-Stoll Chair of Physics at Hunt-er College and a Distinguished Professor of the City University of New York. He has focused his research on electron trans-port and optical response in semiconductor heterostructures such as the two-dimensional electron and hole gases. In addition, he has done work on lower dimensional quantum structures. Prof. Gumbs was a National Research Council of Canada postdoctoral Fellow in Ottawa. He was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow as well as a Senior Fulbright Scholar. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and a Fellow of the American Physical Society.

Danhong Huang is Senior Research Physicist with the Space Based Advanced Sensing and Protection Branch of the US Air Force Research Lab, with prior assignments e.g. at the University of Texas and with the MIT. His research centers on development of theoretical understanding of solid state and heterostructure physics and developing tools for compu-tational modeling. He was a Research Assistant Professor at the Wayne State University working on electronic quantum interfer-ence in semiconductor quantum wells, an NSERC Fellow working on many-body theories on quantum transport and optical transition, an NRC Fellow working on semiconductor infrared photodetectors, a IPA contractor at the Air Force Research Laboratory working on magneto-quantum transport and magneto-optical absorption in low-dimensional semicon-ductor systems.

2013/05. 730 pp. HC. Approx. € 289.00 ISBN: 978-0-470-67389-8

So far only a few species of microalgae are under mass cultivation. The potential for expansion is potentially huge with some estimates suggesting that there are a further one million or more, so far unex-ploited species, representing a mind-boggling untapped resource.

The second edition of this extremely popular book contains 36 chap-ters. Nineteen of these are written by new authors. There are 11 new chapters covering important new aspects including novel photobio-reactors, techno-economic analysis of algal mass culture, outdoor mass cultivation of oil-bearing microalgae, and the biology and large scale culture of several newly exploited species including Chlorella, Spirulina and Dunaniella.

This book is intended for Aquaculture engineers, phycologists, pharmaceutical, biofuel and fish feed industry and aquaculture personnel.
