Got space on your couch, Bendigo The Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) is
coming to Bendigo for the first time; bringing
more than 30
beautiful, placid dogs for you to meet (and
potentially take home!)
It’s the first time we’ve arranged one of our
famous adoption days in Bendigo, so it might be
your first chance to see – and perhaps adopt – a
former racing greyhound. They’re great pets;
lazy, affectionate, low-maintenance and flat-out
funny.
GAP has re-homed more than 7,500 former
racing greyhounds in the past 21 years; which
makes us one of the most successful greyhound
re-homing agencies in the world.
We provide everything you need to begin your relationship with your dog; advice, background – even a collar and
a lead – for the full adoption price of $75.
So make space on the couch, then come and meet these beautiful dogs!
Sunday, August 13 – at the Bendigo Greyhound Club from 11am – 1pm.
Even if you’re not ready to adopt right now, we’re more than happy to answer your questions and talk about some
of the other greyhounds we may have available. Please note that due to high demand, there won’t be any cat-
tolerant greyhounds at this event.

Prevention is better than cure, right?
With breeding numbers down by around 60%, and an
estimated 30-40% of pups not being named, I would
like to start a new service... early education.
I'd like to see this become my main, if not only service.
I feel it's a critical step our industry has neglected for
too long, and with the poor percentages above, its
important we become more efficient with what we
breed.
I'll provide details in a day or so, but basically this
program is for 3-9 month old pups, with a minimum of
12 weeks to gain real benefit from the intense one-on-
one education. But longer the better!
There will be 6 stages of which your pup will go
through, all designed to ensure your greyhound is a well
-rounded, forward, confident and keen chaser, with his/
her prey-drive fully unlocked! They'll still get all the
standard rearing, but will also get exposed to the kennel
life as well as lots of bullring, box and drag lure work.
For older pups, at stages 4, 5, and 6, your hound will be
a junior race dog, they'll even compete against another
pup behind the drag and on the clock, so that'll be great
for syndications to keep clients excited!
With early and consistent positive reinforcement, I can
safely and confidently offer a full refund on the extra
service if (IF) your pup doesn't break-in. That's $15 per
week refund, even if you use the full 40 weeks, or
minimum 12 weeks. (*conditions apply).

GAP SA helps de-stress Flinders Uni
GAP SA spent a couple hours on 4 days at Flinders
University helping calm students during exam weeks
with our Doggy De-Stress Clinic.
Due to the success of our 'De-Stress with Dogs
Clinic' in Rundle Mall in May, we were approach by
Flinders University to set up a similar stand during
exam weeks for exam-riddled students.
It was also a great success generating media
appearances on channel 10 and in local Messenger
newspapers. The students loved having a welcome
distraction from study and exams while the greyhounds
lapped up the attention. With the success of the stand,
GAP SA have now been invited back to Flinders to
setup for a day during their O'Week on Tuesday 25th
July.
We are in need of some volunteers for this day to
bring their beautiful greys along to give out cuddles and
pats to all the students. We will be there from 11 until
2:30pm. If you think you can help and have a
greyhound that is more than comfortable with a heap of
attention then please call the office on 8243 7124.

Beautifully bred litter
We received an email from Harry Manolitis during
the week about a beautifully bred litter of pups he
whelped on 21 June.
The pups are by international stud success, Kinloch

Style) from the beautifully bred bitch, Dasha (March
2014 Go Wild Teddy x Outlandish), whose dam is by
Collision x Tocsin (Pure Octane x Sound Lee).
Harry sent us this profile on the litter.

Richmond Derby, 3rd G2 Sandown Shootout. Finalist
G1 Topgun, G1 Hume Cup, G1 Paws, G2 Bob Payne,

mated to Kinloch Brae, produced champions Ring The
Bell (G1 Nat Distance, G1 NZ Silver Collar, G1 NZ
Stayers Cup, G3 Summer Cup, 2nd G2 Topgun Stayers,
3rd G3 Top Cat Video Cup, G3 Syd Cup, finalist G1

Horsham Cup, 3rd G1 Vic Peters, G1 H-Dawson,
finalist G1 Perth Cup, G1 Aust Cup, G1 Winter Cup, G1
Bris Cup, G2 Wgl Cup).
Dasha's second dam Tocsin is a litter sister to Regal
Blaze the dam of Absolute Stunna.
Kinloch Brae has a proven "nick" with broodbitches
with Collision in their dam. This is the cross found in
G1 Easter Egg winner Moreira and G1 Paws winner Aza
Flying Spur. Dasha's dam Outlandish is by Collision.
Dasha's second dam Tocsin is also a sister to Aston
Dream the dam of Aston Bolero (Geelong TR, G2 Ben
Cup, G2 Shep Cup, G3 S-Bullet, 2nd G1 Topgun, G2
Mait Cup, G2 Wgl Cup, G2 Ben Cup, finalist G1 Aust
Cup twice, G1 H-Dawson, G1 Temlee, G2 Wbool Cup,
G2 Hor Cup).
The overwhelming majority of Kinloch Brae’s very best
progeny in Australia have at least one, and sometimes
more, crosses of Malawi’s Prince in their dam.
Dasha has THREE crosses of Malawi’s Prince in her
pedigree.
EVERY single aspect of the mating between Kinloch
Brae and Dasha is proven to the ultimate level ... Group
1. The sire is a sprint champion and stud dog great. The
dam a multiple winner, half sister to superstars, from a
family of greats. And the cross is proven, proven,
proven. It stands every test.

JOBE’S RETURN
Black dog, June 2015 Nolen x Efogi Road. Raced by
the Saunders Clan Syndicate and trained at Somerville
by Darrell Saunders.
Eleven starts now for three placings but hasn’t had
a lot of luck with box draws in recent runs.
Beaten 14.5 lengths at Sandown (SAP over 595
metres last Sunday, but the winner got away and won by
13 lengths (34.28), so forget the margin.
Prior to that was placed in one of four starts over
520 metres at Cranbourne, three times from box four.
HOLLYWOOD PEARL
White & black bitch, March 2015 Premier Fantasy* x
Glamorous Keisha). Raced and trained by Craig Hughes
At Lara.
Five starts now for a win over 450 metres at
Ballarat (25.71) and one placing.
Last start sixth from box two over 515 metres at
Sandown (SAP), beaten 11.9 lengths in the race won by
Zou Star (29.84).
Still learning and is beautifully bred, so expect
improvement with more racing.
SPRINT TEE
Fawn dog, April 2015 Spring Gun x Molly Tee. Trained
by Steven Spoljaric at Kilmany for the Spolly’s Andrex
Syndicate.
Has been a model of consistency, with 19 starts
now for one win and nine placings.
Placed last five starts over 595 metres, then 515
metres at Sandown, including last start third last
Sunday, from box seven, beaten 2.89 lengths in the race
won by the promising youngster, Shady Tex (Fernando
Bale x Sweet Shadow) who ran 29.93).
That was a great run and a sign he’s not far away
from another win, just needs a little more luck.

Shima’s Swansong By Michael Floyd Racing & Media Manager SGRC
Shima Song’s finest race track performance is also
her last with connections immediately announcing
her retirement following her brilliant all of the way
victory in last Thursday night’s group 2 McKenna
Memorial.
Race favourite and five-time group 1 winner Fanta
Bale began beautifully from box three however Shima
Song ($8.10), drawn ideally in box 1, took full
advantage of her rails draw to push through and lead
through the first turn.
The pair was joined by Bella Shima as they
cleared away from the chasing pack down the back
straight.
Positions remined unchanged as they charged
through the driving rain, but as they turned for home
Shima Song rolled off the fence and Fanta Bale
switched to the rails. It set up a thrilling run to the line
with Bella Shima chiming in down the middle of the
track but Shima Song refused to buckle and held on
record a memorable victory. Just a length separating the
placegetters as they crossed the line.
“She’s the nicest girl, you couldn’t get a better
dog,” said handler George Dailly.
“She always tries hard and to hold off a dog like Fanta
Bale is a huge effort.”
The win was Shima Song’s 28th in 66 career starts
and the $40,000 first prize catapulted her career earnings
to $288,475. She has also been placed on 21 occasions
throughout her remarkably consistent career which
began more than 18 months ago, the last 12 months of
which have seen her racing exclusively in top grade.
Dailly believes that consistency is testament to her
outstanding attitude and will to work.
“She goes out and works and does exactly what
she needs to do. She does everything, she’s just
beautiful.”
It was a sentiment echoed by Shima Song’s elated
owner and breeder, David Gleeson, who had identified
her as a talent very early in her education.
“She was an incredible dog, you’d open the back
of the boxes and she’d run in. She was always down at
the front and she’d fly out, you saw it tonight she began
like a rocket. She very rarely misses the start,” he said.
“I thought down the back they’d start to take
ground off her but they didn’t. The two strongest dogs in
the field were sitting behind her and for her to show that
toughness was so thrilling. I’m thrilled to bits.”
Gleeson also bred the third-place getter Bella
Shima who is a half-sister to the winner, and also raced
their mother Shimaguni, a group 3 winner that finished
fourth in this race in 2011. Claiming the club’s premier
595m event was a special thrill for the long time
Sandown director who breeds and races his greyhounds
in partnership with good friend Bob Cummings.
“He will be absolutely over the moon. He couldn’t
come down tonight because he won’t leave the dogs at
home on their own. He’s the best man in Australia when
it comes to the handling of young dogs, there’s no one
better. I’m sure that Bob will be thrilled to the back
teeth.”
Despite only recently turning three years of age
and racing in the best form of her career, Gleeson was
certain that was the last time we’ll see her on the track.
A home on the couch beckons before embarking on a
breeding career.
“I wanted her to go out on a high. We’ll ease her
out of the racing kennel and give her the rest that she
deserves. I’m sure she’ll produce a few winners because
she’s a faultless dog.”
Later in the evening, Worm Burner returned to
Sandown Park for the first time since a career
threatening stomach muscle injury and reminded all why
he’s regarded as one of the country’s most exciting
chasers. Despite finding trouble throughout the run,
Worm Burner pushed his way between runners to
claim his 43rd career victory and take his career prize
money beyond $350,000.
Shima Song is a Black bitch whelped May 2014
by Dyna Tron from Shimaguni (Primo Uno x Messines).
Shima Song is raced by David Gleeson & Bob
Cummings and trained by Andrea Dailly at Corio in
Victoria. She has raced 66 times for 28 wins and 21
placings. After adding the $40,000 first prize for the
McKenna her stake earnings stand at $288,475.

The history of the McKenna Memorial
The McKenna Memorial was first run in 1971 and
acknowledges the contribution to the Sandown Club
by legendary administrator Jack McKenna.
McKenna came to Sandown and took the job of
Club secretary in the 1940’s from Tatura in central
Victoria. He had held the position of secretary of the
Tatura Plumpton Coursing Club and he made a major
impact after arriving in the city. He was instrumental in
the club’s advancement in many ways but importantly
its move across the railway line and the purchase of the
land of the current site. McKenna’s ability as an
administrator is still to this day talked about in revenant
terms and the sport and particularly Sandown will
always be in his debt. The honour roll listed below of
past winners is a classy one it starts with National
Distance Champ Saki Dasher trained by Aussie Rules
superstar Bob Pratt and includes recent winners,
another superstar Xylia Allen, 2015 winner Lady Toy
and last year’s winner Bruce Tycoon. The race has been
conducted over 595 since 2010. Prior to that the staying
event was conducted over the 700 and the list has some
of the best stayers of all time.

About Jack McKenna
Years involved in industry: 60
NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS:
Tatura Coursing Club Secretary 16 years
Sandown Greyhound racing Club secretary 35 years
Negotiated purchase of land on which the Sandown
GRC exists today.
When greyhound people hear
the name ‘McKenna’ they
think of the Sandown
Greyhound Racing Club’s
prestigious Group 2 distance
event, the McKenna Memorial.
However, precious few
these days know a lot about the
man after which the race is
named, the great John
McKenna, who was a big
advocate for distance racing in
his heyday.
Born in 1901, McKenna was a country boy turned
staunch Sandown GRC administrator who was not only
a hero of the Sandown club, but in the community at
large. An outstanding country footballer who captained
Tatura as a feared ruckman. McKenna’s leadership
qualities were apparent throughout his entire lifetime.
His involvement in the administration of
greyhound racing began when he was only 18 as
Secretary of the Tatura Coursing Club, a position he
held until he was 34 when he moved to Melbourne. It
was at this point, in 1935, that he was appointed the
Secretary of the Sandown GRC, and he stayed in that
role until 1970.
The Sandown club experienced some interesting
times during McKenna’s reign, particularly in the
1950s when the club was confronted with some major
issues. One of those included the club’s move from its
current location to a site on the other side of the nearby
railway line. Also, Sandown was abolished as a
proprietary club in 1955 only to get a new license under
the sport’s controlling body, the National Coursing
Association [NCA] in 1956. A few years later, in 1959,
an infamous split occurred between Sandown and the
NCA which created significant turbulence.
McKenna was a devoted family man who had
four children, and his wife Anne also spent many years
involved with Sandown and was an icon at the race
club in her own right.
Not only was McKenna a great provider for his
family during difficult economic times, but he also
helped many others.
“He was a fantastic humanitarian and had a very
strong association with St. Josephs Catholic Church in
Springvale. He was like the godfather of the Springvale
community”, said McKenna’s grandson Mark O’Brien.
His role at Sandown included being the club’s
Grader.
In his time as an administrator, McKenna was
determined that Sandown would provide the best
standard of racing in the state, if not the nation.

AGRA News
An occasional series featuring members of
the AGRA Hall Of Fame.
Rod Deakin In the late 1940s, Deakin
and his parents shifted to
Noble Park, and a few
years later he established a
five-acre property in
Keysborough.
At the peak of his greyhound breeding powers he had
more than 100 greyhounds on the complex. Deakin
considered greyhound breeding an art and a science.
His breeding philosophy was to select his best
race-performed brood matron and breed with her before
she turned two years of age.
He would then repeat the process a few more
times from that dam line, with a futuristic theory of
producing pups around eight years ahead of their time.
"It is no good breeding from an ordinary
performed sire and dam and hoping for the progeny to
be six to eight lengths better than the parents as this just
doesn't happen," Deakin once said.
From the 1960s through to the 1980s in
particular, Deakin bred, reared or raced a myriad of top
class greyhounds including Plunder Road, Corcoran,
Landena, Fawn Scout, Jefferson, Citizen Band, Tegimi,
Sargood, Wonoka, Crete, Titus, Incus, Varley, Bolta's
Gift, Plunderola, Balkan Chief, World Acclaim, Rod’s
Advice, Supplier, Tesoro Mio and Stetson.
A major player during the sport's golden era,
Deakin also had an eye for business and let it be known
to all and sundry that "every dog on his property was
for sale".
"He sold a lot of good dogs. I think he sold
Plunder Road and Corcoran to US interests for $10,000
and $20,000 respectively," said his son, Ross of Narre
Warren.
"But I wouldn't let him sell Tegimi; he was one of
my favourites." Ross added that his father was "bored"
after selling his Keysborough property in the early
1980s and "put his hand up" for an administration/
grader position in Macau.
"They were just starting up, and his knowledge
and experience was invaluable. He stayed there for
around five years," he said.
Deakin bred a veritable production line of
champions including the winners of four National
Distance Championships, two Sandown Cups, five age
classics, five coursing classics, and a Hobart Thousand.
He also divided the 1972 Victorian Derby with
One By One, Slim Design and Tinkering.
"Greyhound racing was his whole life, and he did
a lot for the sport.
He conducted seminars around Australia with
friend and legendary trainer Ned Bryant, and many
people asked him for advice," Ross said.
Deakin also was instrumental in the import of
Irish sire Lively Band to Australia.
He also stood top sires Fawn Scout and Second
Stage. Ross said his father would have been "over the
moon" with his induction into the Victorian greyhound
racing Hall of Fame. Rod Deakin passed away on
October 5, 1999, aged 75.
