GRETA VALLEY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 6 July 2016 GRETA VALLEY SCHOOL SKILLS FOR LIFE! Dear Parents/Caregivers CANTERBURY CROSS COUNTRY Zach is racing again today after coming 5 th in the Canterbury Primary Cross Country Championships. This time he will run with the intermediates. We wish him well and every success. Go Zach! CPIT VISIT Our Year 7/8 students attended Ara (CPIT) for career information last week and had a wonderful time. The students were split into groups and looked at computer hardware assembly while another group looked at some simple programming. After lunch they travelled to the trades centre and looked at all the various trades Ara had to offer. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students and we express our gratitude to Ara for their continued support here. LEADERSHIP CAMP We were also very proud of our students who presented their Leadership Camp Reports to the Lions last Tuesday evening. Their speeches and movies were very well presented and received by a rather large group of adults. Comments made afterwards by the Lions were very positive. Thank you young leaders you did a great job and brought honour to school. REPORTS Reports are due out this coming Friday and we ask that you not compare one child with another as all children grow in knowledge and abilities at different ages. Please be positive and emphasize the current skills and achievements rather than comparing them to National Standards. I think of some of the children that I have taught over my many years in teaching and realise that even though some students struggle at and through school, despite our best efforts, they will find and achieve their chosen career and often excel in it. We must continue to expose them to as many career paths and opportunities as we can to help them continue to be motivated to learn. END OF TERM HANGI Our end of term celebration Hangi is going to be a great event. We have up to 90 people committed to attend. Just to follow up on my email on Tuesday may we please have the vegetables tomorrow along with peelers and perhaps a container to store peeled and prepared vegetables in overnight? Meat will need to be at school by 10.00am on Friday morning. We’re looking forward to a wonderful meal. Phone 314 3800 - fax 314 3809 - E-Mail: [email protected] Please support our sponsors 1

GRETA VALLEY SCHOOL SKILLS FOR LIFE!

Dear Parents/Caregivers

CANTERBURY CROSS COUNTRYZach is racing again today after coming 5th in the Canterbury Primary Cross Country Championships. This time he will run with the intermediates. We wish him well and every success. Go Zach!

CPIT VISITOur Year 7/8 students attended Ara (CPIT) for career information last week and had a wonderful time. The students were split into groups and looked at computer hardware assembly while another group looked at some simple programming. After lunch they travelled to the trades centre and looked at all the various trades Ara had to offer. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students and we express our gratitude to Ara for their continued support here.

LEADERSHIP CAMPWe were also very proud of our students who presented their Leadership Camp Reports to the Lions last Tuesday evening. Their speeches and movies were very well presented and received by a rather large group of adults. Comments made afterwards by the Lions were very positive. Thank you young leaders you did a great job and brought honour to school.

REPORTSReports are due out this coming Friday and we ask that you not compare one child with another as all children grow in knowledge and abilities at different ages.

END OF TERM HANGIOur end of term celebration Hangi is going to be a great event.

PRODUCTIONVictoria King is working on the outcomes for auditions that we’re held today. We will, in collaboration with her determine character parts for the production and let the students know their parts before the holidays so that they can begin memorising their lines. The production ‘Hoodwinked’ is going to be a lot of fun.

CHILDREN’S BEHAVIOURFinally I would like to include the third part of an article that I shared with you in the last two newsletters. As a reminder it comes in response to a teacher’s statement about the behaviour of children in schools. We found it interesting and have to agree that maybe we need to seriously look at how our lifestyle choices are affecting our children, please draw your own conclusions.Open Quote3. Kids Rule the World  “My son doesn’t like vegetables” “She doesn’t like going to bed early” “He doesn’t like to eat breakfast” “She doesn’t like toys, but she is very good at her IPAD” “He doesn’t want to get dressed on his own” “She is too lazy to eat on her own”. This is what I hear from parents all the time. Since when do children dictate to us how to parent them? If we leave it all up to them , all they are going to do is eat macaroni and cheese, bagel with cream cheese, watch TV, play on their tablets, and never go to bed. What good are we doing them by giving them what they WANT when we know that it is not GOOD for them? Without proper nutrition and a good night’s sleep, our kids come to school irritable, anxious, and inattentive.

In addition, we send them the wrong message. They learn they can do what they want and not do what they don’t want. The concept of “need to do’ is absent. Unfortunately, in order to achieve our goals in our lives, we have to do what’s necessary which may not always be what we want to do.  For example, if a child wants to be an A student, he needs to study hard. If he wants to be a successful soccer player, he needs to practice every day. Our children know very well what they want but have a very hard time to do what is necessary to achieve that goal. This results in unattainable goals and leaves the kids disappointed.(Close quote)So what do we do about this? If you’re really interested in some answers to these questions we’d like to run an evening next term based on what we’ve been doing in ‘Positive Behaviour for Learning’. We may have some answers for you as we discuss what we’re endeavouring to achieve here at school. We will send out more information about this evening next term.
