GRENA, A FAMILY HISTORY

Behind every product is an organization, and Grena products are no exception to the rule. The Grena production site was launched in 1956 by its Founder,Comm. Teresio Magagna, assisted by his wife Amalia, to produce protein hydrolysates for zootechnical use. Meanwhile the farm-ing sector developed the need for nutritional products for soil impoverished by the intensive use of chemical fertilizers that had caused its depletion and demineralization.Keenly aware of this demand of the Italian farming sector, Grena initi-ated a series of tests and technical experiments in local farms, and the results achieved encouraged the founder to continue along this path.In the years following 1980-81, the company developed the production and marketing of organic fertilizers through the new-ly formed company Grena, whose shareholders are all Magagna family members. The surname of the Magagna family is a likely misspelling of the word “Magyar”, which is how the Hungarian people refer to themselves. The word “magyar” can be broken into two parts: Ma + Gyár. “Ma” intheUralic languages, referstoanimalsandagriculture,“Gyár” inHungarian refers to the production. If you look at the language, then, Magyar could have the meaning of “(a people of) farmers, peasants, agricultural producers.” Teresio’s grandfather told the story of how their family was Hungarian-born and arrived in the village of Soave with many other fellow countrymen (in fact, in Soave, the surname Maga-gna is shared with several families, unrelated by blood) and that their real surname was instead Grena. By giving the company the original family name, Teresio has likely put things to rights and has given the next generation their true family name.Market growth was consistent with developments in Grena products, which were diversified to better meet the requirements of crops, increasing the number of formulas available for farming. In the 1990s Grena started to produce organo-mineral and fluid fertil-izers, as well as organic fertilizers, to offer a versatile range of Grena products for even the most demanding customers. The dawn of the 21st century did not take the current directors of Grena by surprise. They collected the impressions of both the market and customers at trade fairs and through daily relations with partners, to ensure that the products offered kept up with demands. Those who already know us and belong to the organizationalframework of Grena can confirm the importance we give to every proposal, and our commitment to communication between the various levels, both production and sales.

The amino acids and peptides in our unique organic matrix play a major role in the nutrition of both plants and the mi-cro-organisms which facilitate the assimilability of nutrients. Thanks to the joint presence of humic acids, fulvic acids and carboxylic acids, GRENA eco-products induce a natural bio-stimulating and chelating action on the root system of plants.

Our GRENA MATRIX is made up of protein hydrolysates of ani-mal origin, which bring nitrogen to the soil in organic form (proteins and amino acids). The organic nitrogen is slowly re-leased, but thanks to the quick mineralization, the nutrients are immediately available for absorption. GRENA eco-products, in pellet 4mm or micro-pellet 2mm, contain between 18-56% amino acids and proteins, which ensure constant nutritional value to any crop. Besides the solid products, our organic liquid distillate IDROGRENA contains organic amines derived from the very same amino acids present in the basic organic GRENA MATRIX.

IDROGRENA AGAINST PATHOGEN ATTACK What makes our liquid product IDROGRENA worthy of note is the presence of organic polyamines found within. Of the types of polyamines known to improve plant life, spermine, in particular, is an essential growth factor. It is responsible for transmitting the activation signal to the paths of defense against pathogens. One of the main lines of defense of plants is found in phyto-alexins. Phyto-alexins are fungal-toxic com-pounds synthesized de novo by plants to rapidly respond to pathogen infections; they are thus already present in plants in good health conditions and in the absence of disease. The-refore, by stimulating a greater production of phyto-alexins, IDROGRENA strengthens the immune system for the plants. The plants then continue to flourish healthy and strong, be-cause fruit development and maturation are also positively in-fluenced by polyamines.

BIOSTIMULANTSWITHSLOW-RELEASEORGANIC NITROGEN

Our products, in the form of pellets or micro-pellets, are parti-cularly suited to restore and improve the conditions of the soil, and thus increase fertility. Cultivated land will receive direct be-nefits in terms of improved chemical, physical, microbiological conditions, and indirect benefits, given that GRENA fertilizers take advantage of the full genetic potential of single cultivars. Thanks to the considerable amount of amino acids, peptides, humic acids, fulvic acids, and carboxylic acids, in the various formulations, GRENA products easily bind to the elements pre-sent in the soil. The “nutcracker effect” is thanks to the chela-tion, which can also unlock what nutrients had remained sta-gnant in the soil from previous fertilizations. In addition, the natural presence of micro-elements makes for a complete nutri-tional plan for the plants, ensuring a vegetative development that is both strong and balanced.

TOP PERFORMANCE WITH GRENAFERTILIZERS Our range of organo-mineral fertilizers is born of the combina-tion between GRENA MATRIX and mineral components. These are made to react with the organic matrix, in order to create stable complexes with agronomic efficacy, further accentuating the bio-stimulating action of the basic product.

Chelation is a chemical reaction in which usually a metal atom, behavinglike a Lewis acid, is bound by a reagent called “chelant” through more than one coordinative bond. The structure of the resulting compound forms a specific complex, very stable, in which the central atom is surrounded by the chelant, as if it were held in the claws of a crab (chele, from which the word chelation derives, is the Greek word for claws). The chelant is often defined as a polydentate ligand (specifically, bidentate, tridentate, etc.).The chelating agent most commonly used is:Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, more commonly known by the abbreviation EDTA, which is a carboxylic acid; in particular, it is a tetracarboxylic acid, also having two electron pairs (Lewis donors) belonging to the hydrolyzed proteins. These properties make theanion ethylenediaminetetraacetate EDTA a hexadentate ligand.

Chelation of a metal atom by an ethylenediamine molecule.

Page 9: GRENA PRODUCTS CATALOGUE

PROTEIN HYDROLYSIS AND WHY IT IS IMPORTANT Our signature production process rests on the foundations of protein hydrolysates. Through thermal hydrolysis of the pro-teins, naturally present in large quantities in the basic orga-nic GRENA MATRIX, our production achieves amino acids and carboxylic groups, which show chelating properties (eg. EDTA that chelates generally Ca and Mg). The bio-stimulating action of the amino acids thus obtained fosters the root proliferation, resulting in the issue of several secondary roots, and facilitates cellular reproduction.

THENATURALRICHNESSOFTHEGRENAPRODUCTS Besides the content of organic nitrogen and micro-elements, GRENA products are also characterized by the presence of ma-cro-elements of organic origin: such as phosphorus (derived from animal residues and particularly from fish) as well as po-tassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur. The abundant presence of humic and fulvic acids combined with these elements mark GRENA products as truly unique.

ROLLO QUALITÁ FERTILIZZANTI

All protein material is made up of amino acids, which can be said to be the best source of organic nitrogen. Free amino acids provide an immediate release of organic nitrogen and peptides and denatured proteins supply the long-term slow release (2-6 months).

HUMICANDFULVICACIDSThanks to the humic acids, the agricultural soil shows stability in the mineralization process that, in their absence, would take place more rapidly and would give rise to nutrient washout. Humic acids are also responsible for a longer time of protein degradation, resulting in slow release of the same. Finally, they are responsible for the formation of organo-mineral complexes, with the chemical elements present in the soil, which would otherwise be not solubilized.

Fulvic acids contain less carbon and nitrogen and a greater amount of oxygen compared to humic acids. For this reason, they are more “reactive” and tend to form soluble salts with many chemical elements present in the soil (Ca, Mg, Al, Fe). In fact, fulvic acids reduce to the utmost the negative effects on plants due to soils with a particularly “heavy”, where the circu-lation of oxygen is poor.

The GRENA production line is divided into three main blocks: 1. IN THE FIRST BLOCK, we find the production of the organic GRENA MATRIX, obtained from the processing of slaughter waste, which is selected at the source (rabbit, fish, poultry) and undergoes a very effective production cycle in terms of the quality of the final product. This part of the produc-tion process consists of a sequence of heat treatments (at this stage, no chemical compounds are added), which leads to the formation of the organic product. During the heat treatment (thermal hydrolysis of the proteins, or THP), in fact, the proteins present in the waste material are transformed, and levorotatory amino acids are made available and extremely effective. From an agronomic point of view, they stimulate the proliferation of roots.

In parallel, the production of our liquid biostimulant starts here. IDROGRENA is obtained through thermal extraction of the humidity contained in the slaughter waste without the addition of any chemical. Amino acids are naturally contained in the slaughter waste material: when the humidity is made to evaporate, the distillation so obtained contains the orga-nic polyamines which were inside the amino acids in the first place. The product is then immediately ready for packaging and distribution.

2. IN THE SECOND BLOCK, the organic GRENA MATRIX undergoes further processing in order to ensure homogeniza-tion and cleaning. This operation consists of a TRIPLE SIEVING to systematically remove impurities (total cleaning) and ensure consistency in terms of: • humidity; • macro-elements.

3. IN THE THIRD BLOCK (pelletizing and packaging) we obtain:

• all organic eco-products, by mixing of the organic GRENA MATRIX;

• all organo-mineral fertilizers, by reaction with mineral com-pounds.

The different types of fertilizer obtained are managed through standard computerized formulas with electro-nic scales. At the end, we find the pelletizing process, in the form of pellets (4 mm) or micro-pellet (2 mm). The production ends with the packaging and palletizing step; everything is handled by a completely automated

system.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

13

Research is one of the most important activities at GRENA, mainly because it is essential to the development of new formu-lations. Moreover, it is invaluable to discover the optimal usage of our products and, above all, to find the best solutions to the problems that regularly occur in agriculture.

Part of the research is carried out in specialized laboratories, using specific equipment for chemical analysis and drawing on precious biological tests.

The field trials carried out by our customers are another vital part of our research work; in this way, our products can be te-sted under the most diverse conditions. The feedback we receive from these tests is regarded as particularly important, owing to the fact that it yields hands-on practical information on the best agricultural practice.

Whether independently carried out or in collaboration with or-ganizations and research facilities, all test results have the aim of improving the techniques of fertilization, the wellbeing of plants and the productivity of crops.

Because healthier plants mean tastier food.

Page 15: GRENA PRODUCTS CATALOGUE

All GRENA products start the same way: slaughter waste mate-rial is cooked in autoclaves. The natural hydrolysis of proteins occurs during this cooking process. IDROGRENA is obtained through thermal extraction of the humidity contained in the slaughter waste, which evaporates during the treatment in au-toclave. The entire process is carried out without the addition of chemicals. Amino acids are naturally contained in the organic substance of GRENA MATRIX and they can be found in the fi-nal solid product we produce. With IDROGRENA, instead, when the humidity is made to evaporate, the distillation so obtained contains the organic polyamines which were inside the amino acids in the first place.

A study done by Catalina Acuña at the University of Costa Rica highlights the importance of polyamines as essential molecules for plant development. But where do polyamines come from? They are biosynthesized from amino acids; this means that once the amino acid is broken down, the resulting molecules are the organic polyamines. In IDROGRENA we mainly find 2-PHE and Spermine. 2-Phenethylamine is biosynthesized from the amino acid phenylalanine and spermine is biosynthe-sized from the amino acid arginine. Of these two, spermine is the most studied.

WHY ARE POLYAMINES IMPORTANT?

• They increase the natural production of phytoalexins, lin-ked with the hypersensitive response of plants against the attack of pathogens.

• They play a role in the correct development of flower structure because they aid in the process of cell division, development and maturation of reproductive organs and fruits.

• A bigger presence of polyamines confers a higher resistan-ce to stress: drought and water stress, and in soils with high levels of salinity. It is excellent in post-transplant and in the event of adverse climatic conditions (radical asphyxia, wee-ding, frost, hail).

• Thanks to the polyamines, IDROGRENA was found to en-courage pollinators insect to approach the flowers while at the same time discouraging the raiding of the crops by wildlife.

FEATURES IDROGRENA is a fluid organic biostimulant with polyamines (2-PHE and Spermine). The effectiveness of the product is given by the rapid availability of organic compounds which can be immediately absorbed by the plant as well as by the useful microorganisms at root level. IDROGRENA is therefore considered ideal for use in foliar and irrigation applications (e.g. drip irriga-tion). The distillation process makes it free of salts and creates no phytotoxi-city. IDROGRENA allows to perform many small applications to continuously encourage sustained and balanced nutrition throughout the productive time of the plant. Thanks to the properties of the amines contained within, the use of IDRO-GRENA aids in: stimulating the proliferation of roots. The amines, once in contact with the roots, promote cellular reproduction and the issue of nu-merous secondary roots, incrementing the micro-flora surrounding the roots. The amines contribute to the proliferation of the microorganisms, improving the fertility of the soil, increasing the availability of nutrients. When the mi-croorganisms absorb the amines, the availability of nutritious elements in the soil augments and the growth of the crops improves as a result. If IDROGRENA is used preventively, it stimulates the immune system of plants, with an anti-parasitic effect. This curative effect of IDROGRENA is also expressed in a greater production of phytoalexins by the plant itself, making for a quick response against the attack of pathogens, leading to an increase of the Brix (°Bx) Grade of the final fruit.

GRENA eco-products are more effective thanks to the pre-

sence of amino acids of animal origin, which carry out

not only a nutritional action on the plants, but also a bio-

stimulating activity on the micro-organisms that live near

the roots. They interact with the root system, increasing

the root proliferation. Plants are therefore able to bet-

ter assimilate the nutritional elements, made available

by the micro-organisms in the soil thanks to the amino

acids.

CONCLUSIONS

The main activities of amino acids in the soil are:

1. to increase the root proliferation, which by promo-ting synthesis of vegetable hormones and the various symbiotic processes (e.g. root nodules, mycorrhizae), contribute to the growth of the mass of the root system, increasing anchoring and absorption capacities.

2. to increase the chelating effect in relation to macro-ele-ments (N, P, K), meso-elements (MgO, CaO) and micro-elements (B, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Zn) present in the soil or provided by GRENA products in order to promote root absorption.

3. to nourish the plant with a form of nitrogen that is energetically advantageous because amino acids are preferred over other forms of mineral nitrogen.

4. to stimulate the activity of micro-organisms in the soil, which in turn promote the production of organic compounds that increase absorption of the nutritional elements and, when the compounds are hormonal, act directly on the plant at a physiological level (e.g. polyamines effect).

Photo of a root treated with GRENA compared with the same root untreated.

Comparative photo of the quantity of roots produced by a plant not treated with amino acids and by the same plant

after treatment.

ROOT PROLIFERATION

Optical microscope image enlarged 100 times of a root tip. The root cap and statoliths can be seen. It is possible to observe the quantity of bacterial activity, external to, but in the immediate vicinity of, the root, to dissolve the macro-elements (N, P, K) in the soil in order to promote their absorption by the roots.

NATURGRENAOrganic eco-productPermitted in organic farming

FEATURESThe basic content of fine organic substance, composed exclusively of feather meal, and the contribution of horn and hoof allow NATURGRENA to stand out as a product suitable for areas where the organic farming regulations are stricter than the norm. It is ideal where the climatic conditions present high temperatures coupled with high humidity, for example in greenhouses. The thermal hydrolysis in autoclave breaks down the protein molecule contained in the feathermeal, thus resulting in levorotatory amino acids. These aid the root proliferation of plants, ensuring a greater absorption of the macro-nutrients (NPK) mineralized in the soil.In organic farming, macro-elements such as phosphorus and potassium are usually taken from soft ground rock phosphate and rock potassium sulphate, whose degradation processes are particularly long. Instead, thanks to NATURGRE-NA, the nutrition of the micro-organisms near the mycorrhizae is improved with amino acids and timings may be significantly reduced. The amount of organic nitrogen of NATURGRENA is well balanced in its release. Indeed, the presence of hydrolyzed feathermeal makes for a quick release of nitrogen at the start, after just 20 days, but this remains nevertheless a slow-relea-se product thanks to the horn-hoof mix, which is particularly slow in degradation. The choice of a medium size for the horn-hoof flakes allows to obtain the complete degradation of the product within 90-120 days.

Guaranteed free of weed seeds, antibiotics, pathogens. Packaging: 25kg bags

Recommended for:greenhouse cultivations, and where the organic farming regulations are especially strict

GRAN SEMINA 4.10 Organic-mineral eco-fertilizerPermitted in organic farming

FEATURESThe organic GRENA MATRIX is unique because rich in levorotatory amino acids (14-56% in 100kg O.S.) including humic and fulvic acids, carboxylic acids (eg. EDTA) and organic amines, which possess an excellent bio-stimulating action.GRAN SEMINA is an organo-mineral eco-fertilizer with 4% organic nitrogen (N) and 10% phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5) that reinforces the root proliferation effect, characteristic of the organic GRENA MATRIX. It also promotes some mycorrhizae, increasing the availability of phosphorus in the soil. In contrast to mineral ferti-lizers, with GRAN SEMINA the slow-release of nutrients is constant over time, nourishing the plants throughout the production cycle. The readily available organic nitrogen translates into a “starter” effect for the crops. The high percentage of phosphorus promptly acts at the beginning of the growing phase, granting extra strength to the plants; in fact, GRAN SEMINA anticipates the flowering because it facilitates the processes of energy metabolism and synthesis reactions. Especially on cereals, there is an increased resistance to cold and parasitic diseases thanks to the Zinc (Zn), which supplements cereals by promoting proper cell growth and the ripening of fruits. Crops fertilized with GRAN SEMINA will benefit from an outer apperance ot better quality.
