Dissertation: “Augustine and the Christology of the Gospel of John: A study of the In Iohannis Evangelium Tractatus CXXIV”

Director: John C. Cavadini

Augustine provides his most sustained meditation upon the person of Christ in his In Iohannis Evangelium Tractatus CXXIV. Augustine is especially concerned in these sermons (delivered between 406-420) with what might be termed the ‘unity of Christ.’ – a unity which is influential in his thinking on a number of topics including the union of natures in Christ, the unity of Christ with the Father, and the unity of Christ with his body, the Church. In this dissertation, I focus on the theme of the unity of Christ in the tractates, and show that this unity ensures the coherence of knowledge and vision of God. The dissertation thus sheds light upon the teachings of a relatively understudied set of Augustine’s writings, while demonstrating the centrality of Christ in his theology as a whole.
