That, in spite of the (two years of) very difficult and challenging times that our industry has experienced. We recently hosted our annual “Meet Your Associates” meeting in early November, which is also our annual meeting. It was held at the Raceway Palace and was clearly a huge success with nearly two hundred attendees and exhibitors. Although this is always a terrific evening of networking and chat- ting, the evening’s highlight always centers around the awards that we hand out. This year’s Rising Star award went to Gary Friedman (Schacker Realty) This award recognizes young folks who have “made a mark” in the business in a relatively short time span, and we are honored to have Gary as this year’s recipient. By the way, Gary’s dad Sheldon, was a former president of CIBS. The wheels go round and round! Our Associate member of the year award went to Dan Deegan of Forchelli, Curto, Deegan, Schwartz, Mineo, Cohn & Terrana, LLP. And this year’s Distinguished recognition award went to our very own executive board member, Jack Britvan of Commercial Realty Services. In addition to the award ceremonies, we announced the results of our recent election. This year, we had three board seats that were up for grabs….two due to board member departures and one simply because of the expiration of a board members term. Well, the board member, Bob Desmond, won his bid for re-election, while two new board members were elected; Dan Gazzola of Newmark Knight Frank and Alberto Fiorini of Alliance Real Estate. As well, this year we recently brought on three associate board members who will actively participate in all our board meetings but who are not permitted to vote. These folks are Marissa Karmitz of Cushman and Wakefield, Mario Asaro of Industry One, and Michael Rosenfeld of The Rochlin Organization. I am confident that they will have a positive influence on CIBS! And I am excited to share with you our new exec- utive board who are “Industry Leaders”. en years ago I wouldn’t have thought it would happen, but I’m now back at the helm of CIBS. My last stint as pres-ident was back in 1998-1999. The organization is nowentering its 18th year and I was involved from its earlydevelopment and I have been very happy to contribute toits continued growth and success.

A few changes should be spoken about: Started during JeffSchwartzberg tenure, CIBS has been trying to engage theyounger generation into the managing of CIBS. Thefruition of those efforts has manifested itself this upcomingyear with the addition of Kyle Burkhart to our executiveboard and Dan Gazzola and Alberto Fiorini to our general

board. We also have a newappointed board membercategory called “AssociateBoard Member” andMarrisa Kamitz andMario Assaro will becontributing under thiscategory for 2011.

CIBS has traditionallybeen politically ambiva-

lent, this has been slowly changing and while we generallywon’t be supporting individual politicians, we will be sup-porting development friendly legislation and sustainabledevelopment efforts. We currently have a strategic alliancewith Association for a Better Long Island (ABLI), LongIsland Builders Institute (LIBI) and LIBOR which bring thebreadth of our voice to over 30,000 members (read voters).

Lastly, the results of many of the major issues that the CIBSBoard deliberates over each month will be highlighted andcommunicated to the general membership immediately fol-lowing our board meetings; we want everyone involved andwill be trying to make access easier for members to betterunderstand the issues. We will be embracing social mediamore as a communication tool to our members and willattempt to produce short two to three minute video inter-views with Long Island’s movers and shakers as they relateto commercial real estate, brokerage and the Long Islandeconomy. And off we go…

Happy Holiday and see you next year!
