GREETINGS

Thank you for being an important part of the 88Nine family of supporters!

2015 marked our 8th anniversary on the air; two full years in our new home

in Walker’s Point; the launch of our Cultural Commons initiative; substantial

expansion of our digital presence; and Jordan Lee’s promotion to Program

Director.

Our home at 220 E. Pittsburgh Ave. has become the warm, welcoming

gathering place that we envisioned back in 2012 when we launched the

Sound Foundation capital campaign. Continually alive with music and

activity, 7,900 people have been through the doors this past year for

events held by 88Nine, our neighbors in Walker’s Point, our Cultural

Commons partners, and other nonprofit organizations.

To say that we’ve come a long way in eight years is an understatement,

and we have you to thank for 88Nine’s incredible success. With more than

4,000 supporters, this organization is truly powered by the community.

As you connect with 88Nine on your radio, online, out in the community,

or at our studios, please take pride in your involvement this year. Your

financial support is more than a contribution to a single organization. It is

a gift you’ve given to the entire community through 88Nine --- a gift that

helps everybody discover new music and discover Milwaukee.

With gratitude,

Carl Cahill

MISSION

Through music and stories created for a culturally open-minded community

88Nine Radio Milwaukee is a catalyst for creating a better, more inclusive

and engaged Milwaukee. We reach a new generation of radio listeners

with an entertaining and adventurous selection of music and public affairs

programming. We champion Milwaukee—our music, arts and culture,

neighborhoods and community organizations; celebrate diversity, and

encourage community engagement—while promoting a positive global

identity for Milwaukee.

“I stream Radio Milwaukee on my computer from the time I walk into work until the time I leave. I listen to 88Nine at home and in my car. The staff and DJs entertain me, commercial free, and turn me on to

a plethora of music. The Community Stories are top notch, as are the Studio Milwaukee sessions both for Members and the community at

large. And seeing the station’s team active throughout the community and lending support and sponsorship to other important local issues is great. Milwaukee would not have all of this without listener support!”

TOP ALBUMS OF 2015

10. Best Coast – California Nights

Best Coast changed with this album. When 2008’s Crazy For You came out, lead singer Beth Cosentino was innocent and sweet. On stage she talked about how much she loves cats, California, and boys. She was bright with excitement for the world. In California Nights she was still in love with the Golden State, but now she is just “Feeling OK” and she is “Fine Without You.” It’s not that she is sad, she is just growing up, and that’s human. This album reminded us that it’s OK to feel OK.

9. Jamie xx – In Colour

Jamie xx is part of the band The xx. Their first two album covers were stark black and white. This solo album is In Colour. As a solo artist Jamie xx did things in this album that he just couldn’t do with The xx. Like teaming up with abstract rapper Young Thug and making the song “Good Times” and making us dance all through the summer. This album was as bright and colourful as its name.

8. Hot Chip – Why Make Sense?

So, every Monday here we have a music meeting where each DJ brings in two songs, we listen to everyone’s songs, and then we vote on what songs we are going to play. Every time someone brought a Hot Chip song to a meeting smiles came across everyone’s faces and dancing broke out. We just didn’t want to stop playing this album. Why not? Why make sense?

7. The Decemberists – What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful World

This was the first album that we fell in love with this year. It came out on January 20th. Usually record labels don’t release anything good in December because then it might miss all the critic’s year end lists. So in January this was a breath of fresh air. From the first song, “A Singer Addresses His Audience” we knew that the Decemberists were still writing with wit and charisma. Each song on this album is a layer deeper into the onion and we wanted to peel.

6. Tame Impala – Currents

This was the album that musicians themselves were listening to the most this year. On our segment 5 Songs We Can’t Stop Listening To we ask artists to tell us about one song that they can’t stop listening to, and the clear favorite from artists across the board this year was Tame Impala’s Currents. Everyone wanted to talk about it. And we did too.

Page 7: GREETINGS - Amazon S3 · The Waterfall is big, it’s powerful, ... (Featuring Gregory Porter) ... Every Thursday we welcome a Milwaukee band or musician into the studio

5. Leon Bridges – Coming Home

Leon Bridges was the breakout artist of the year here at 88Nine. Before this year he didn’t have any recorded music, and when we picked up Coming Home it was the only song he had ever recorded. He turned out to be a gift. Every song he released after that we fell in love with and before the album was even out in June we were playing several songs from it. His music is everything that music was, turned it into everything that music should be.

4. Courtney Barnett – Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Just Sit

We found out about Courtney Barnett though an asthma attack. Her story style lyrics on the song “Avant Gardener” solidified her as a master songwriter and when Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometime I Just Sit came out, we wanted to pull up next to the fire and hear her tell all of her campfire stories. Her music lets you into her life, so we wanted to let her in ours.

3. Alabama Shakes – Sound and Color

Brittney Howard is a force. She is the front woman for the Alabama Shakes and she will rock you to your bones. On this album she opens up and explodes with her voice, and then she also takes it down to a whisper, or even a laugh. Sometimes you just hear a singer and you think, “There is soul in there, and I can hear it.” That is what we heard fromBrittney Howard.

2. My Morning Jacket – The Waterfall

My Morning Jacket released our favorite My Morning Jacket album in 10 years. The Waterfall is big, it’s powerful, and it’s moving. The album weighs in at just under 50 minutes and it is worth every second. It’s even better if you catch them during one of their multiple-night shows in Milwaukee.

1. Father John Misty – I Love You, Honeybear

There is no artist writing songs as honest as Father John Misty. Many songwriters cast themselves or their situation with some romanticism, expressing it in a grandiose language of love, but Tillman does the opposite. I Love You Honeybear is an album that is entirely about love but completely devoid of sentiment. Because of that it might be the most romantic album ever made. His love isn’t proclaimed or justified by his expression of it, his love just is. It’s fact.

If life, or art, or anything is some kind of search for Truth, we found it in this album.

STUDIO MILWAUKEE SESSIONS

Over the past 12 months, Radio Milwaukee has hosted 19 Studio Milwaukee Sessions with artists and bands of national and international notoriety (listed below). The majority of these sessions were possible because our partners at The Pabst Theater Group brought them to town for concerts and the musicians were gracious enough to agree to a private performance and interview for 88Nine. Studio Milwaukee Sessions are a great way to treat our donors to exclusive opportunities to show our gratitude, and all donors of $500+ are guaranteed a spot at every session!

414 MUSIC LIVE

Every Thursday we welcome a Milwaukee band or musician into the studio

for a live performance and interview, and Members and listeners are invited

to be a part of it! Our afternoon DJ, Ken Sumka talks to the bands about

upcoming shows, album releases and what it’s like being a musician in

Milwaukee.

This is a great opportunity to see some of Milwaukee’s most established

and up-and-coming bands play in a “happy-hour” environment.

From week-to-week, crowds range from 25-100+ guests!

HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:

Dec. 10, 2014 - A team from US Cellular unexpectedly dropped by

414 Music Live and gave a $500 gift to Milwaukee band, Canopies.

This was a campaign that set out to commit random acts of good.

They heard about what we were doing to support Milwaukee bands and

wanted to contribute to that effort!

June 11, 2015 - Up-and-coming Milwaukee hip-hop/soul collective

New Age Narcissism took the 414 Music stage for the first time and

turned the capacity crowd into a frenzied dance party!

Sept. 10, 2015 - True Skool 10-Year Anniversary album release party.

Over 200 people showed up to see True Skool students perform songs

off of their new album and celebrate 10 years of True Skool.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

From the beginning, an essential part of 88Nine’s

mission has been to make Milwaukee a better

place to live through community engagement.

And thanks to our new home in Walker’s Point,

we now have a much greater impact. In 2013 –

thanks to 1,700 generous donors – we acquired

220 E. Pittsburgh Ave. and transformed the

space to include our studios, offices, a 99-seat

performance space, state-of-the-art production

facilities, a green roof, a community room, and

more. Beyond our music broadcast and digital

content efforts, examples of Radio Milwaukee’s

community engagement efforts include:

• Community Stories Each year, 88Nine

features 200 nonprofit organizations and

individuals with short-form Community Stories.

We present the ideas and accomplishments

of people who are working to make this a

better community. Our partners can share the

stories we produce for them with their own

constituents and potential clients, patrons, and

donors. Visit radiomilwaukee.org/stories to

listen to stories and see photos.

• PSA Program Radio Milwaukee awards

on-air announcements to other nonprofits

to promote an event or initiative of their

choice at no charge. This allows our partners

to reach the same audience as our paying

corporate underwriters, even though they are

often working with little or no advertising or

promotions budget. In one year we provide

more than 600 free announcements to45+ organizations.

• Collecting Donations Radio Milwaukee

promotes the needs of our nonprofit partners

on the air to mobilize our listeners to bring in

donations. We’ve collected 655 pounds of food

for Hunger Task Force; 1,150 books for Next

Door Foundation; and more than 1,000 toys

for local organizations affiliated with Hispanic

Professionals of Greater Milwaukee.

Page 12: GREETINGS - Amazon S3 · The Waterfall is big, it’s powerful, ... (Featuring Gregory Porter) ... Every Thursday we welcome a Milwaukee band or musician into the studio

• Activating our New Home Our new home

was designed to benefit the nonprofit community

and be a resource for the greater good. The

best fit for this effort is to open our doors for

education and awareness events. A few examples

include BoardStar’s Forum on the Future of

Nonprofits; 4th Street Forum on the Road; and

The Commons launch event, and Poetry of the

People by Social X, Milwaukee Urban League,

and Coalition for Justice.

• Cultural Commons An exciting thing

happens when you bring 30 people representing

more than 20 organizations together to launch

an effort designed to break down barriers and bring people together. Through a new initiative

called Cultural Commons, Radio Milwaukee

is devoting significant resources to address

Milwaukee’s racial segregation challenges.

Launched in 2015, Cultural Commons uses

88Nine’s assets – a beautiful new home; trusting

and committed partners; and a loudspeaker to

reach the community – to build connections

among people and host events designed

to attract people that want to build a more

engaged and inclusive Milwaukee. Current

partners include:

“Radio Milwaukee is a transformative force in the lives of others and the built environment. It has positively

impacted my life and I want that same gift to be freely given to our community and world. The programming

and events are empowering and diverse. Our local music scene is exploding thanks to 414 Music! A radio station for

the people by the people! Keep up the incredible job.”- Chad W., New Member 2015 -

VOLUNTEERS

As a listener-supported, independent radio station, we rely on the

generosity of dedicated volunteers to expand our reach into the

community and support our membership efforts. Whether it was asking

trivia questions and distributing premiums at events around the city

during our Discover Milwaukee Tour; wooing the crowds at Summerfest;

answering phones and taking donations at our annual spring and fall fund

drives; providing administrative support in our office; or serving as a brand

ambassador for 88Nine in some other capacity, their efforts were critical to

Radio Milwaukee’s impact on our community in 2015.

In 2015, nearly 150 volunteers contributed over 1,300 hours to

support 88Nine Radio Milwaukee. We are incredibly grateful for the selfless

giving of their time and talents.
