Boise Wood ProductsHas New Leader

Boise Cascade appointed Tom Corrickas executive vice president, Wood Prod-ucts. “Tom has done an outstanding jobgrowing our engineered wood productsbusiness and introducing our Boise Im-provement Cycle for process improvementthroughout Wood Products. He also playeda key role in our recent successful IPOprocess,” comments CEO Tom Carlile.

Corrick joined Boise Cascade in 1980and has held various financial, planningand operating positions. He became theEWP general manager in 1999, vicepresident in 2004, and senior vice presi-dent in 2011, and has been one of thedriving forces behind the expansion ofthe company’s EWP business over thelast 15 years. Corrick succeeds TomLovlien who announced his retirement.

Lovlien led Boise Cascade’s purchas-es of the Kinzua sawmill in Pilot Rock,Ore.; the Arden sawmill in Arden,Wash.; the Filler King beam plant inHomedale, Idaho; and the Chester, SCand Moncure, NC plywood plants.

‘Black’ Pellet MillPlanned For Monticello

Zilkha Biomass Energy announced itis building a facility in Monticello, Ark.to manufacture Zilkha’s “Black” pellet,

the first commercially available “ad-vanced pellet” in the biomass industry,according to the company. Zilkha plansto invest $90 million in the facility andcreate 52 jobs.

“Power companies across the globeare looking for renewable energy alterna-tives and biomass wood pellets stand asone of the most practical and cost-effec-tive solutions,” says Jack Holmes, CEOof Zilkha Biomass Energy. “This plant inMonticello will be one of Zilkha’slargest and will help us capture more ofthe growing biomass energy market. OurBlack pellets have a set of beneficialqualities, such as water-resistance, thatmake it a more attractive option than tra-ditional wood pellets.”

Zilkha Black pellets can be easily inte-grated into coal-fired plants to createcleaner emissions, allowing plants tomore easily comply with clean air regu-lations, and energy companies to buildfewer new power plants, Zilkha claims.The pellets are water resistant, which al-lows them to be transported and storedoutside like coal.

“Monticello is proud to have beenchosen as the site for Zilkha BiomassEnergy,” says Nita McDaniel, executivedirector of the Monticello Economic De-velopment Commission. “The manufac-turing of Zilkha Black Pellets is a naturalfit for the community alongside the Uni-versity of Arkansas at Monticello’s

School of Forest Resources. Our heritageis rich in the timber industry and thisheritage continues to move us forwardwith sustainable wood-based products.”

Zilkha Biomass Energy LLC is head-quartered in Houston. Its web site reportsthat another Zilkha plant, ZilkhaBiomass Selma (ZBS), will be commis-sioned to produce Zilkha Black Pellets inSelma, Ala. this year. This plant willhave production capacity of 275,000metric tons of pellets per year. The plantis at the site of the former Dixie Pelletsplant, which Zilkha is retrofitting withZBE process technology to produce theZilkha Black pellet.

GP Completes ChipMill Acquisition

Georgia-Pacific completed the acqui-sition of a chip mill in Bernice, La. fromHunt Forest Products, Inc..

The Bernice chip mill produces “cleanchips” from logs that have been debarkedand are used to make paper products.
