THE form table may still have madegrim reading if Bristol Rovers man-ager John Ward chose to take a look atit over the weekend – but that shouldnot detract from the optimism he willbe feeling as he arrives for training atCribbs Causeway this morning.

Only bottom-of-the-table Accring-ton Stanley are enduring a longerwait for a victory than Rovers fol-lowing this 1-1 draw at the One CallStadium – yet they produced a per-formance on Saturday that was farfrom in keeping with a run that sawtheir number of league gameswithout a win extended to six.

Yes, Rovers left it until six minutesfrom time to secure a share of thespoils with an Alefe Santos shot find-ing the corner of the net from adeflection off Mansfield midfielderKeiran Murtagh – but any other res-ult would have been a travesty.

Only ten minutes had elapsed be-fore efforts from Lee Brown and RyanBrunt made it clear that Roversmeant business and even though theysuffered early setbacks – a headed

goal by Mansfield midfielder LeeStevenson following a moment of hes-itancy by goalkeeper Steve Milden-hall, followed almost immediately bythe loss of Brown to injury – theycontinued to take the game by thescruff off the neck.

Had Rovers’ shooting not been, asWard labelled it, “a little bit straight”or had they not run into an in-formgoalkeeper in the shape of Alan Mar-riott, they might have been victoriousfor the first time since a Tom Lockyergoal secured a 1-0 success overNorthampton Town on August 31.

said, “Wardy, your team deserved towin today.” It was an incident in starkcontrast to the last time the Roversmanager was confronted by fans atthe end of a game.

That was just over a month ago asWard headed down the tunnel afterwitnessing a lethargic performanceat Dagenham & Redbridge. Colourfullanguage was used by some Gasheadsto express their view of the display, which clearly stung Ward.

After Saturday’s game, there was anoticeable change in demeanour of amanager who has appeared to becarrying the weight of the world onhis shoulders in recent weeks.

Ward had watched his side turn ina performance that was a throwbackto some of those that lit up the latterpart of last season. Those who ques-tioned whether the team spirit thathad been crucial in Rovers’ i m p rove dform following the departure of MarkMcGhee was a thing of the past, wereoffered emphatic evidence to the con-trary by the side’s best display thisseason.

That they achieved it by passingthe ball intelligently and purpose-fully – aided and abetted by a slickplaying surface – will no doubt havebeen a source of further pleasure forthe manager.

Br unt’s willingness to chase lostcauses or offer a willing target for themore direct pass was the startingpoint from which Rovers were able toget the ball down and play it on theground higher up the pitch. It was amethod of play that suited strikerDavid Clarkson, who returned to the

side after a five-week absence. Manyobservers have wondered if theformer Bristol City striker fits intothe style Ward prefers to deploy, butC l a rk s o n’s show suggested he can bea prime asset if the ball is played intohis feet more often than not.

Supporters showed their appreci-ation for the efforts of their team witha raucous rendition of GoodnightIrene at the final whistle – no doubtbuoyed by the fact that three mem-bers of the side that finished the gamewere raised on streets no more thanshort car rides away from the Me-morial Stadium.

Brazilian-born Santos, who spenthis formative years in Southmead, provided an instant source of excite-ment on his introduction from thebench before plundering his first goalfor the club, while there was a com-petent senior debut for Patch-way-raised defender Pat Keary afterhe was called into action as substitutefor Brown in the early stages.

Portishead-reared midfielder OllieClarke completed the trio of localyoungsters on his first appearance ofthe season, adding to the belief thatthere may be some substance inWa rd ’s assessment that the club’s fu-ture looks bright.

Displays such as this suggest thatmaybe we all just need to believe inhim a bit more often.

Match reaction

LOCAL youngster Alefe Santoshopes that his first senior goal willboost his hopes of eventually be-coming a more regular fixture in theBristol Rovers starting line-up.

Santos, 18, from Southmead, hasmostly made fleeting appearancesfrom the bench since being handed adebut by former manager MarkMcGhee last November – but he en-joyed his most significant moment ina Rovers shirt by scoring a late lev-eller in the 1-1 draw at MansfieldTown on Saturday.

“It was the best moment of mycareer so far and I just want to keepprogressing now,” said Brazili-an-born Santos, who has nine seniorappearances to his name.

“The shot took a wicked deflection,

but I’ll be claiming it! It all happenedvery quickly. I just jinked around thefull-back and saw the chance for ashot.

“I didn’t think it was going in, butit was great to see it hit the net andthen I was just jumped on by every-o n e.

“I have to keep working as hard asI can and one day I might just start in

the line-up. I feel like I am progress-ing quite quickly and the managerhas helped me a lot since he has comein.

“I’ll just keep working hard to try toscore more goals and see what hap-pens from there.”

Patchway-raised defender PatKeary, meanwhile, completed amassive turnaround in his fortunesby making his senior debut for theclub, having told he wouldn’t make itat the Memorial Stadium as little astwo years ago.

“It’s mad, really,” said Keary, whoplayed at the heart of defence foralmost 80 minutes after replacing theinjured Lee Brown.

“I’ve played for Rovers since I waseight years old, but I was released

when I was 16. I went to Team Bathand was re-signed a year later.

“A couple of years ago I was lookingfor a job and could never have pre-dicted that I would end up making mydebut for Bristol Rovers.”

He added: “I didn’t expect to go oneven when Lee Brown went down. Iran out to warm up and was verysurprised when I heard the gaffercalling me back and telling me to getre a dy.

“I didn’t have any nerves reallybecause I have been training with thefirst team for a long time and TomParkes really helped me out.

“We would have obviously pre-ferred to get three points, but on apersonal note the day was great form e. ”

IT can be argued that fielding ayoung side makes them playmore for each other and withoutany fear.

John Ward was left with littlechoice but to move young TomLockyer to centre-back for thevisit to high-flying Mansfieldand having done that, then madea brave decision to name OllieClarke in midfield for his firstgame of the season.

Yet, from the start, a fear thatRovers would have their backs tothe wall for most of the gamed i d n’t materialise as they tookthe game to the hosts.

We can presume that GarryKenneth would have replacedthe injured Mark McChrystal ifhe had been fit. However, I wasglad Lockyer filled in after re-calling how well he played at theback when replacing the injuredTom Parkes during the Scun-thorpe game.

I said “filled in” because thetalented Lockyer has alreadyplayed in several positions thisseason. The worry is he couldbecome a Jack-of-all-trades andmaster of none. Yet, I rememberlong ago how a promising young-ster called Gary Mabbutt turnedout for Rovers at centre-backand centre-forward – and itd i d n’t do him any harm.

S at u rd ay ’s team got evenyounger once Mansfield scoredas the injured Lee Brown wasreplaced by last season’s youthteam centre-back Pat Keary. Hehas been at Rovers since he waseight, so perhaps the FA can citeour club as a good example ofgiving home-grown talent theirch a n c e

With Andy Bond’s loan periodnot being extended, I hope hiswages can be used to bring inanother forward, even thoughDavid Clarkson showed a returnto form at Mansfield.

It was great to see Alefe Santosscore a goal (I don’t care if it tooka big deflection) as it will prove abig boost to another talentedyoungster who Ward is protect-ing after claiming he onlyweighs 9st wet through.

Ellis Harrison will be back onSaturday and I hope he gets astart if Matt Harrold is not fitand we are unable to secure aloan signing.

In recent seasons we havefloundered at the bottom of thetable without even having anyyoung players to show for it. Westill have a long way to go, but atleast there is now a lot of prom-ise in the squad which bodeswell for the future.

Mansfield have made a goodstart to the season, yet their gatewould not have topped 3,000 butfor 400 travelling Gasheads. Itmakes our league position allthe more frustrating.

The media last Friday de-scribed Montenegro as havingthe same population as Bristol. Ibet it has more decent footballg rounds.

Meanwhile, in Bucharest, twoyears after work started on anew stadium, the mayor of thecity decided a retractable roofwould be a good idea. It was thenpaid for by the government andthe city council. If only...

“It would probably have been un-fair on Rovers if we had gone on andwon the game.”

BEN Glynn’s 72nd-minute try mayhave proved decisive, nailing downan important win for Bristol in theiropening British & Irish Cup game ofthe season against tough, well-organ-ised opposition.

But what followed after that wasequally important as Leeds virtuallymonopolised the ball, retaining andrecycling possession but crucially re-maining pinned down in their ownhalf, struggling to penetrate the homeside’s battling defence.

It was stretched pretty thin at timesas Leeds tried and tried again to finda way through, but the home side, to aman, rolled up their sleeves andtackled themselves to a standstill.

That rousing effort – composed, organised and, importantly, discip-lined – was recognised by the crowdat the final whistle, and the on-fieldscenes of celebration told their owns t o r y.

And, let’s be honest, it was quite astory because, as the game came to anend, there were four local teenagerson the pitch for Bristol – Nick Car-penter, Auguy Slowik, Steve Uren andJoe Joyce – with a fifth – CallumBraley having started for the homes i d e.

The British & Irish Cup may notmake many headlines in the widerworld of rugby, but this was a win thatmattered so much to this group ofplayers that one – we won’t embar-rass him any further – was in tears inthe celebratory huddle.

As for the game itself, the wet andslippery conditions meant this wasnever going to be a thriller, but it wasstrangely compelling because it wasso tight, so tense and so close for longp e r i o d s.

Bristol dominated the opening ex-changes and should have taken thelead in the tenth minute. Slowik hadalready made one storming breakwhen he burst down the middle andonly had to draw the final defender toput Fautua Otto away for a try, butkicked through and the chance waslost.

A combination of lenient referee-ing at a series of five-metre scrumsand Leeds’ determined defence thenkept the home side at bay.

The fly-half then nudged his sideahead with a 22-metre penalty infirst-half injury-time.

Leeds maintained that momentumwith a strong start to the secondperiod, powerful No 8 Jarad Williamshaving the strength to power overfrom close range, Hughes again con-ver ting.

The visitors clearly held the upperhand at this stage but Bristol madethree significant changes in the 52ndminute, sending on James Grindal,Adrian Jarvis and Andy Short.

Jarvis made an instant impact witha neat grubber through for Short totouch down with virtually his firsttouch, Jarvis adding an excellent con-version from wide out to close the gapto three points.

With both sides making furtherchanges, the game finally began toopen up with Bristol, thanks to someintelligent kicking from Jarvis, keep-ing the pressure on.

This period of control producedwhat proved to be the match-winningtry. Jarvis found Glynn in space andthe second row needed no secondinvitation to do the rest, getting hishead down and picking a nice line toslice through and slide in for only hissecond score for the club.

The job was not yet complete as thephysical visitors tried to batter theirway out of their own half, but Bristolheld firm to kick off their cup cam-paign with a hard-fought win.

Key incidents

BRISTOL rested many of theirfirst-choice players for this British &Irish Cup clash, but it provided animportant chance for a handful ofmen to catch the eye and put them-selves in the shop window before theChampionship campaign resumeson October 27 against Nottingham.

Mitch Eadie did himself no harmat all with a series of eye-catchingbreaks, the No 8 taking every op-portunity he had to charge throughgaps in the Leeds defence and keepBristol surging forward.

Iain Grieve also got through plentyof work, but most of it was unglam-orous with the former skipper beingkept busy at the breakdown, har-rying his opposite numbers and alsomaking plenty of tackles.

Bristol will be wondering howearly pressure did not provide morepoints. The home side had the edge atfour five-metre scrums in quick suc-cession, squeezing Leeds who, onanother day, might well have con-ceded a penalty try.

But although the referee’s pa-tience finally snapped with thesin-binning of prop Rob Martey, Bris-tol still could not find a way over theline, although their first try was notlong in coming.

The scrums were a mixed bag allafternoon, while Bristol’s earlyline-out was hesitant, but signific-antly improved in the second peri-od.

Arguably the turning point of thematch was the arrival of half-backs

James Grindal and Adrian Jarvis inthe 52nd minute.

The experienced pair instantlymade an impact, Jarvis mixing uphis game nicely to keep the Leedsback row guessing, while Grindalalso injected an urgency and dir-ectness that the visitors battled toc o u n t e r.

Ja r v i s ’ kicking game – including acouple of neat dinks behind the de-fence – kept his side going forward, while he showed a masterful touch toput fellow replacement Andy Shortin for a try.

The playmaker also made his pres-ence felt with several importanttackles in the frantic final moments, typifying a determined Bristol ef-for t.

BRISLINGTON’S great FA Cup runcontinued as they dumped Westonout of this season’s competition in agame dominated by penalties.

There were also six cautions, asending off and several contentiousrefereeing decisions.

From the start, Weston controlledthe midfield play, but the visitorspacked their defence, makinglife difficult for the home at-t a ck .

Tristan Plummer had a lowcross cut out well by keeper ChrisHumphries, who also blockedAshley Kington’s effort with hislegs and pulled off an acrobaticsave to turn another Plummereffort over his crossbar.

Weston had penalty claimsfor handball rejected by Christ-church referee Adrian Quelch.

In a Brislington attack on 24minutes, striker Neikell Plummer, brother of Weston’s Tristan, wasbrought down and Mike Rimmeropened the scoring from the penaltyspot.

FORMER Yate frontman Darren Ed-wards put away an injury-time pen-alty at Lodge Road to earn Gloucesteran FA Cup third qualifying roundre play.

Trailing 2-1 with time running out,Edwards converted from 12 yardsafter fellow ex-Bluebell Matt Groveswas brought down in the box by MikeB r ya n t .

Until then, Jake Cox’s long-rangeblast had looked like giving Townanother famous victory, after DarrenMullings had equalised Bryant’s de-flected opener.

Gloucester striker Will Morfordwas denied by Yate goalkeeper Mar-tin Horsell early on, before LewisHaldane shot across the face of goal atthe other end.

Bryant broke the deadlock twominutes before half-time whenGloucester failed to clear a free-kickand the midfielder’s shot beat MikeGreen via a deflection.

The visitors levelled just short of thehour-mark when Tyler Weir centredand Mullings arrived just in time tobeat Horsell with a deft glancing head-

despite strong protests by thehome players.

However, Ingram did better on86 minutes when he was broughtdown and equalised from thepenalty spot.

The game looked to be head-ing for a replay when, deep into in-jury time, Brislington were awardedanother penalty when Kirk handledwhile lying on the ground.

Again, Rimmer obliged from thespot to sent the jubilant visitors homein triumph and into the fourth qual-ifying round for the first time..

Early goal blitzputs Bath intothe next round

BATH reached the fourth qualifyinground of the FA Cup with an im-pressive victory at Fairfax Park.

Bath knew they had to buck uptheir ideas after three successive de-feats – and they had this tie virtuallywrapped up in just overh a l f - a n - h o u r.

Bridgwater, who staged a four-goalfightback in the previous roundagainst Bristol Manor Farm, neverseriously looked capable of a repeatperformance, although it might havebeen a different story if Wallingfordreferee John Busby had awarded aspot-kick to the home side when theywere 2-0 down.

Kristian Miller appeared to bebrought down in the penalty box, butBusby decided he went down too eas-ily and booked him.

Bath got off to a flying start bytaking the lead in the ninth minutewhen David Pratt scored with a head-er following a corner by ChrisAllen.

The Skrill South side snapped up asecond from a penalty in the 29thminute. Miller was adjudged to havebrought down Adam Connolly andAllen stepped up to make it 2-0.

Bath made it 3-0 after 32 minuteswhen Allen netted with a sweet volleyafter Pratt pulled the ball back fromthe goal-line on the right.

Bridgwater, unbeaten in 15matches prior to this game, playedbetter in the second half and topscorer Joe Bushin missed a chance toreduce the arrears from close range.

But towards the end Bridgwaterkeeper Chris Wright came to hisside’s rescue by making two smartsaves from the lively Ross Stearn, asBath completed a job well-done andpocketed £7,500 in prize money.

Bath head coach Lee Howells ad-mitted the FA Cup win at Bridgwaterhad eased some of the financial pres-sure on the club.

“The FA Cup ranks really highlyfor us because it’s money,” said How-ells .

“A couple of years ago we won a fewgames and got £100,000-plus. Thathelps the club and the board of dir-ectors, helps me get better playersand better players bring better res-ults. It’s very important to us.”

Mixed day forRyan as Unitedlose to leaders

RYAN Bennett proved to be both heroand villain as Mangotsfield wereedged out by the Division One South& West leaders at Cossham Street.

North Leigh applied early pressureand Andy Caton headed wide fol-lowing a corner.

Bennett was booked for a foul on 16minutes, but he gave Mangotsfieldthe lead seven minutes later. NorthLeigh goalkeeper Paul White droppedthe ball from a corner and Bennetthooked home from close range.

However, North Leigh equalised on33 minutes when Mangotsfield's Tom

Parrinello turned a cross into hisown net.

A minute later, Conor McDonaghshould have given the visitors thelead, but he fired high and wide of thegoal.

There was little between the sidesin the second half, with Mangotsfieldbattling well and matching the lead-ers in all areas.

But with a draw looking likely, thegame turned on 79 minutes whenBennett brought down McDonagh inthe penalty area and Stuart Hole slot-ted home the spot-kick.

Mangotsfield boss RichardThompson brought on three substi-tutes to try to rescue a point, but theirmisery was compounded when Ben-nett was sent off for a second book-able offence.

PAU LT O N ’S progress in the CalorSouthern League Division One South& West promotion race took a knockas they were held to a draw at lowlyF leet.

The visitors found Town goalkeep-er Ryan Pryce in fine form, withefforts from Mike Perrott and NickMcCootie repelled early on.

Instead, it was the home side thattook the lead on the half-hour whenRob Carr crossed for Danilo Cadete toturn the ball home.

McCootie fired wide in responseand Ben Lacey was denied by Pryce,

who also kept out efforts from DeanEvans and Brandon Barnes after theb re a k .

However, ten minutes into thesecond half, Dan Cleverley fired Paul-ton level, and a Josh Klein-Daviesheader put the visitors in front on thehour mark.

Just eight minutes later, though,Fleet dragged themselves level as Ca-dete returned the earlier favour toCarr, who made no mistake.

There were no more goals, but thegame ended with ten men each asRove r s ’ Evans and Town’s Ben Whitewere sent off.

Pa u l t o n’s Red Insure Cup tie athome to Yate tomorrow has beenpostponed owing to the Bluebells’FA Cup replay away to GloucesterC i t y.

DEFEAT away to Wycombe Wan-derers on Tuesday night in theJo h n s t o n e ’s Paint Trophy was anew low point in an already dis-appointing season for BristolC i t y.

After a very good performanceagainst Port Vale in the previousgame, which ended on a sournote after Aiden Flint’s poorback-pass had allowed Vale theequaliser, I expected City tobounce back and really go forit.

Hindsight is a wonderfulthing, but I expected SeanO’Driscoll to stick with the sameline-up and allow them to taketheir frustrations out onlower-league opposition. Wehave not won in 19 league gamesand any win, albeit in a cup, would have helped raise con-fidence. The fact that we werealso without a game this week-end owing to international fix-tures was even more reason togive the same players a run-out.

The head coach saw thingsdifferently and instead gave anopportunity to players from thebench and the fringes of thestarting 11. He also handed adebut to 16-year-old academyplayer Joe Morrell, but unfor-tunately for the youngster, theexperienced players around himdid not perform and as a resulthe struggled to make an im-pact.

Without being disrespectful toWycombe, we should have gonethere and won irrespective of theside that we fielded. O’Driscoll, who is normally supportive ofhis players, pulled no punches, describing the performance asdisgraceful and pathetic.

I read with interest an articlein the Bristol Post about howthings have changed at the clubin terms of finances, and it reallyopened my eyes. There is nodoubt that the job O’Driscoll hasto do is a difficult one, but thatd o e s n’t change my view that weshould be seeing more from thesquad at his disposal.

O’Driscoll attended the FansParliament this week, alongwith Jon Lansdown and AmyKingston. I was interested toread some of the output fromthat meeting. By all accountsO’Driscoll was happy to answerquestions, wanting supportersto gain a better understanding ofsome of the challenges and frus-trations he has.

He said that he understandsthe disappointments and angerthat the fans have experiencedover the last few years andknows that not winning a leaguegame this season is unaccept-abl e.

Results on the pitch shapef ans’ feelings and getting thefirst win and then moving up thetable will help, but we have torealise how far the club havef allen.

I’m disappointed by the lack ofleadership at boardroom level. We need chairman Keith Daweto come out and explain theirplans and what they have askedO’Driscoll to do. The silence isdeafening from the board andthis is adding to the disconnectwith the fans.

Croatia won’t be easy even without some star names, says McCall

SCOTLAND coach Stuart McCall haswarned that Croatia still have plentyof quality to call upon for tomorrow’sfinal World Cup qualifier at HampdenPark, even if they decide to rest someplayers who are walking a discip-linary tightrope.

C ro at i a ’s 2-1 home defeat to Bel-gium on Friday night meant the vis-itors qualified for the Brazil finalsnext summer as winners of Group Awith Igor Stimac’s men consigned toa play-off place as runners-up.

However, Vedran Corluka, Luka

Modric, Mario Mandzukic, NikoKranjcar, Nikica Jelavic, GordonSchildenfeld, Ivan Strinic, Eduardoand Ognjen Vukojevic are all on yel-low cards and will miss the first gameof the play-off if they are cautionedagainst Scotland.

Josip Simunic is suspended andSime Vrsaljko and Mateo Kovacic, both on yellow cards, have dropped tothe Under-21s, while Ivan Rakitic, also cautioned earlier in the tour-nament, is out injured.

McCall believes Stimac has been

left with a dilemma, but does not feelCroatia will inevitably be weakenedif they utilise their squad fully withthe play-offs in mind.

“As a manager you want to go intothe play-offs on the back of a goodre s u l t , ” said McCall. “I am not so surethat making three or four changeswill weaken them that much, with thestrength and depth that they have.”

There is optimism around the Scot-land camp following the 2-1 win overMacedonia in Skopje in their lastgame and the 1-0 victory over Croatia

MANAGER Chris Coleman feelsWales can strike a blow for theirfuture international aspirations bybringing World Cup-bound Belgiumdown to earth with a positive result inBrussels tomorrow night.

Wales head to the King BaudouinStadium for what could be Coleman’slast competitive fixture in charge ofthe Dragons. Talks over a contractextension have stalled, following an-other frustrating qualifying cam-paign.

Victory over Macedonia in Cardiffon Friday at least moved Wales off thebottom of Group A, a point aboveScotland, and Coleman would love to

John and 16-year-old Harry Wilsoninto the squad for their first taste ofsenior international football, a movewhich the former Fulham boss feelspoints to an increasingly bright fu-ture for Wales.

“When you see that performance(against Macedonia) from an inex-perienced squad, then it is reallypleasing,” Coleman said, “but we willneed that and more in Belgium if weare to do anything.”

It was not that long ago Colemanseemed to have all but secured a newtwo-year deal with the Football As-sociation of Wales, but Septemberdefeats to Macedonia and Serbia saw

oversee another promising displayagainst an impressive Belgian squadwhich includes Barclays PremierLeague talents such as Eden Hazard,Romelu Lukaku, Marouane Fellaini,Kevin De Bruyne and Kevin Mir-a l l a s.

“Alright, there is nothing on it forthem as it (World Cup qualifying) isdone, but we still have a point top rove, ” said Coleman.

“We can’t go there thinking,‘nobody expects anything from us’ –we have to expect something fromo u r s e l ve s. ”

Coleman has looked to integratethe likes of Lloyd Isgrove, Declan

the contract put on hold until afterthe Group A campaign has ended.

Coleman, who took over from thelate Gary Speed in January 2012, ac-cepts it was always going to be a bigask to make an impact among sideswith so much more depth.

“There was a time where I thoughtwe could have nicked third spot, butBelgium, Croatia and Serbia havebeen too strong for us,” he said.

Charlton forward Simon Churchscored the winner against Macedoniaand hopes he can profit again to-morrow, when veteran Craig Bellamywill play his last Wales internationalbefore retirement.

in June, in addition to decent per-formances in defeats to Belgium andEngland in between.

However, McCall urged caution, saying: “You don’t want to get carriedaway because sometimes one bad res-ult can take the wheels off again.

“Without getting carried away, thetraining sessions have been good andeveryone wants to be here, whichthey should do.

“To get Scott Brown back in themiddle of the park has been key andJames Morrison has come back in.”

LEIGHTON Baines is desperate toavoid missing out on another WorldCup with England.

Baines made a late surge into theEngland squad prior to the 2010World Cup but despite starting thewarm-up games against Egypt andMexico, Fabio Capello cut the de-fender loose, omitting him from his23-man party for South Africa.

Baines had said in the run-up to theWorld Cup that he was homesick, although the 28-year-old has alwaysmaintained he would have been morethan happy to represent his countryat the tournament.

He will have a second chance toplay for England at a World Cup nextsummer providing that Roy Hodg-s o n’s men finish the job tomorrownight by beating Poland at Wembley.

If England fail to win they will becondemned to a tricky play-off – andBaines feels there is no bigger mo-tivation for the team to get the victorythey need.

“World Cups don’t come around toooften in a player’s career. Everyone ishungry for that opportunity to getthere and we are one game away fromthere. We know what job needs to bedone and, hopefully, we will do it.

“The magnitude of the game issomething we are all aware of. OnFriday, we had to make sure it was inour own hands and we have to go andfinish the job now.”

Baines was one of the star per-formers on Friday as England de-molished Montenegro 4-1 to remaintop of Group H.

The 28-year-old is enjoying the bestform of his life at Everton, but he isstill by no means guaranteed a start-ing spot for his country because ofAshley Cole’s recent displays.

Baines admits he is playing withmore freedom because of the know-ledge that he is certain to start.

“You enjoy it a lot more when youknow you are going to get a game,”said Baines, who has just 20 caps to

Owen advisesTownsend tostay groundedMICHAEL Owen believes AndrosTownsend will be an automatic se-lection for England’s decisive WorldCup qualifier against Poland tomor-row night – but cautioned against the22-year-old looking too far ahead.

Townsend enjoyed an outstandingdebut, picking up man-of-the-matchhonours and also scoring a mem-orable goal in the 4-1 win againstMontenegro at Wembley on Friday.

That result leaves England know-ing that victory tomorrow will book aplace at next summer’s World Cupwithout the need for a hazardousplay-off, with Townsend now tippedto make Roy Hodgson’s final 23-mansquad.

However, Owen feels it is unwise tolook too far beyond tomorrow, whenhe is sure the Tottenham man willp l ay.

“Certainly he is an automatic se-lection for the next match,” saidOwen. “Andros has been playing par-ticularly well for Tottenham andthere had been a couple of injuries toTheo Walcott and the like so the placewas up for grabs.

“It was no surprise to me that heplayed. We needed to score goals andwe needed to win the game.

“He is quick, exciting and directand he can beat a man. It was a verygood move from Roy Hodgson to playhim.

“But there are so many big gapsbetween games. You might play fant-astically well one day, then be poor inthe next, and your place is underscr utiny.

“Yes, a good game normally getsyou a place in the next team, but thatis as far as it goes.”

With Danny Welbeck on the left andWayne Rooney supporting DanielSturridge through the middle, Owenwas more enthused by England’s at-tacking options than he has been forsome considerable time.

And the eventual manner of victory

his name. “It was good to be able toprepare for the game in that frame ofmind, really, rather than just waitingin the wings.

“It is great to be in and playing. There is a significance with every capyou get and you grow into it more andmore. It has been good to be involvedin more qualifiers in this campaign.

“I’m pleased with how things aregoing at the moment and it was greatto play on Friday and get the win.”

Baines was by no means the onlydecent performer against theMontene g rins.

Wayne Rooney became the highestcompetitive goal scorer in England’shistory when he opened the scoringand there were also encouraging per-formances from Danny Welbeck and,to a lesser extent, Daniel Sturridge.

Andros Townsend stole the show, however, with a goal and an assist ond e bu t .

Baines has been given a torrid timein training by the Tottenham winger

and has backed the 22-year-old to puton a repeat performance against Po-land.

“It was great for him to score thatgoal and he is now an important partof the squad who can producematch-winning performances,” saidB a i n e s.

“It was a great performance and itwas a massive lift for us.”

Many were taken back by RoyH o d g s o n’s decision to hand Town-send his debut and the England man-a g er’s general positivity in thebuild-up to the game.

Ex-professionals came out in forceto denounce England after their drabgoalless draw in Kiev, but Baines seesplenty of reason for optimism shouldthe team get to Brazil.

“We have fresh blood and excite-ment – combined with the experienceof other players – and that mix puts usin a great position to go there and tryand do something there,” saidB a i n e s.

confirmed Owen’s belief that, insidethe dressing room at least, Englandwill harbour genuine hopes of mak-ing a positive impact in Brazil shouldthey confirm their passage.

“One game doesn’t mean we willhave a shot at winning it, but it was apositive result and a positive per-for mance,” said the 33-year-oldformer England striker.

“There is a lot to be taken from that. There is a lot of excitement around.

At international level you need paceand someone who is going to unlock adefence in tight games. We have gotthat now.

“It doesn’t make us World Cup con-tenders, but it does gives us belief wecan hurt a few teams now.”

With Ukraine finishing theirGroup H programme against SanMarino, victory is essential against aPoland side who have been elimin-ated from the competition.

Some feel that will make them evenmore dangerous opponents, withRobert Lewandowski and companyable to play with an increased free-dom to excite what is set to be amassive away support at Wembley.

Owen can see that argument – bu the also feels it will take away theadditional hunger than ensures Eng-land will complete their quest suc-c e s s f u l ly.

“It is an awkward one,” he said. “I

would say it will help us. When youare in the trenches, when you stillneed to qualify, you might go one stepfurther for the cause.

“Poland will enjoy the occasion. Not every player gets to play at Wemb-ley. But they will meet a hungry team,on a real high after the performancethe other night.

“England expect to reach the WorldCup and I expect us to win prettycomfor tably.”

Head coach Alex Guest admitted tobeing disappointed by his side’sbelow-par performance, but believesDings can turn things around. Hesaid: “We spoke during the weekabout the need to come out firing inthe first quarter to lay down a mark-e r.

“Our intensity was good first up,but as soon as they scored, we seemedto drop off. We just couldn’t get ourgame firing, and their aggressive de-fence made life tough for our ball-run-n e r s.

“We ’re trying to make slight ad-justments to the way we attack. Dingshave traditionally had a big set offorwards, who can dominate otherpacks, but that’s no longer the case.We need to add variety to our attacks, but our new approach is taking timeto bed in.”

Dings, who can usually be relied onto produce passion, enthusiasm, anda dogged determination to prevail atLandseer Avenue, were lacking intheir trademark values.

Flanker Stean Williams did his bestto disrupt the visitors’ ball, whilehooker Dave Wheeler and No 8 MikeUren continually offered themselvesas willing ball-carriers. Replacementscrum-half Steve Plummer injectedsome life into the Dings attack, butother than a few second-half scrumsand a flash of magic from wing JamesOakley, the Dings faithful had little tocheer about.

The visitors’ suffocating defenceproved to be their trump card, withthe home side sent reeling by someheavy tackles. Irish led 8-0 at thebreak, thanks to a Scott Tolmie tryand an Ian Cross penalty.

Dings responded two minutes intothe second half with a stunning tryfrom Oakley, converted by Mark Woo-drow, to get back in the hunt. DarrenLivett extended the visitors’ lead, be-fore centre Sheldon Stevens dived inunder the posts for a converted try, which edged Crusaders into a 14-13lead.

Tolmie latched on to an intercep-tion to race in from 60 metres for hissecond try, converted by Cross, beforeWoodrow nudged over a penalty tobring Dings into losing bonus-pointrang e.

But Dings, now pushing for the win, were undone when they were pen-alised for not releasing in front of theirown posts. Cross slotted the penalty toensure his side scooped all four points, leaving the Lockleaze lads nothing toshow for their efforts.

ENGLAND’S David Lynn surgedthrough the field to claim his secondEuropean Tour title and climb backinto the world’s top 50 in the PortugalMasters yesterday.

Lynn, whose only previous win inalmost 400 events came in the KLMOpen in 2004, carded a superb closing63 to finish 18-under-par at OceanicoVictoria Golf Course in Vilamoura.

The 39-year-old, who turns 40 nextSunday, started the day six shots offthe lead, but charged into contentionwith five birdies in a front nine of 30.After a bogey at the 10th, he picked upfurther shots at the 11th, 14th, 15thand 17th to set a clubhouse target thatwas never matched.

An emotional Justin Walters, whobegan the week 126th in the Race toDubai, holed a 40ft par putt on the18th to claim outright second on 17under and secure his card for next

“We ’ve had no injuries at all,so to come through un-scathed is good.

“We gave Bordeauxnothing and that justshowed our mental-ity. In that secondhalf, they neverlooked like scoringagainst us.”

Playing on a greasysurface, Bath couldhave done with a fullcomplement ofsecond-row forwards againsta Top 14 pack not known for takingp r i s o n e r s.

But injuries to Dave Attwood, Stu-art Hooper and Dominic Day meantthat the untested partnership of

youngster Will Spencer and flankerMatt Garvey had to do battle.

SEBASTIAN Vettel has revealed thatvictories rather than a place in For-mula One’s history books are hismotivating force.

Vettel is now on the cusp of be-coming only the third driver in F1 towin a fourth consecutive world title, standing alongside two of the greatsin Michael Schumacher and JuanManuel Fangio.

Setting a personal best record offive successive wins, and a fourth inthe last five years in the JapaneseGrand Prix at Suzuka, Vettel is now90 points clear of the only man math-ematically capable of catching him.

With Fernando Alonso finishingfourth, it means the champagne is onice for another fortnight until theIndian Grand Prix where Red Bullshould also celebrate their fourthstraight constructors’ c row n .

For Vettel, standing on top of thepodium at Suzuka summed up why heis in F1 because after the boos atMonza and in Singapore, there werenothing but cheers and adorationfrom the knowledgeable Japanesef ans

Offered a choice between goingdown in history with Schumacherand Fangio, or standing on top ofevery podium on the calendar,Vettel replied: “I prefer the secondthing.”

The 26-year-old German added:“When I was small I dreamed aboutF1, and honestly never thought oneday I would be able to test one of thesec a r s.

“The first time I did I was worriedfor the first couple of laps and Ithought ‘All right, that’s for real men,not for me’, but then I got used to itand obviously wanted to do more.

Lynn surges to the title with a 63season, the South African breakingdown in tears following the death ofhis mother two weeks ago.

Lynn, who struggled to a 73 onSaturday, said: “I was really disap-pointed when I walked off the courseon Saturday, I just didn’t hole anyputts and made seven at 17 andthought maybe I had played myselfout of it.

“Today was just a case of I’ve got togo out there and make as many bird-ies as I can. I must admit I wasthinking of Scott Jamieson’s 60 (inthe third round). If I could dosomething like that, who knows? Thewind was up quite a bit today, so eightunder is a really good score.

“I really caught fire on the frontnine, I was making everything Ilooked at, although I hit it to one footat the first which got me off to a reallygood start.”

THE Stade Chaban Delmas proved ahappy hunting ground for Bath 15years ago when they lifted theHeineken Cup there – and so it provedagain on Saturday night.

Bath missed a clutch of first-halfchances to score tries, but five pen-alties from George Ford, pictured, ultimately proved enough to see themhome and deny Amlin Challenge CupPool Two rivals Bordeaux a losingbonus point.

Instead, from fourth on the grid,Lotus’ Romain Grosjean grabbed theearly lead, and from that moment itbecame a battle of strategies.

On a two-stop, and exercising pa-tience over the opening laps, Vettelmade his work to perfection to finishseven seconds ahead of Webber, whostopped three times, and Grosjeanwho changed tyres twice.

“I’ve now won four times here atSuzuka, which is incredible,” addedVettel. “Regarding the championshipwe have a very, very good gap. It looksvery good at this stage, but we willstill keep pushing. It’s not over untilit’s over.”

Alonso, who finished 45 secondsdown, added: “We have differentgoals now. We will continue to try todo our best on Sundays, and when it ismathematically settled we will con-gratulate him.”

Lotus’ Kimi Raikkonen was fifth, followed by the Saubers of NicoHulkenberg and Esteban Gutierrez, the latter in the points for the firsttime in his rookie year.

M e rc e d e s ’ Nico Rosberg, given adrive-through penalty for an unsaferelease after almost colliding withM c L a re n’s Sergio Perez, finishedeighth.

M c L a re n’s Jenson Button and Fe-lipe Massa, in his Ferrari, completedthe top ten.

First, Rob Conquest powered hisway over, then Steve Hipwell added afifth try, to seal the bonus-point vic-tory. Both tries went unconverted.

An emotional Justin Walters, whobegan the week 126th in the Race toDubai, holed a 40ft par putt on the18th to claim outright second on 17under and secure his card for next

thought we did that. To win anywhereaway from home is pleasing, but inEurope it is doubly pleasing.

And Bath coped well, protecting 100per cent of their own line-out ball

in the opening half and usingthe catch-and-drive to po-

tent effect.Francois Louw was

day of persistent rain. And the Springbok was a pivotal

factor, winning turnovers and frus-trating the opposition to the extentthey began to swing punches in hisdirection as the game wore on.

“A couple of years later, Red Bullgave me the chance at Toro Rosso toget some races, and it’s incrediblewh at ’s happened over the last couple

of years. But nothing has changed inthe way I still love racing, I love thechallenge, I’m still nervous when Iwake up on Sunday, still excited whenI walk on the grid and tense, lookingforward to the race.

“I enjoy – not the numbers – but thefact I’m racing, and a great crowdtoday, a fantastic day.

“It would be a shame if you were tootense and if you tried to force thingstoo much, so you have to allow your-self to enjoy it because this (the job) is

“I’m very fortunate I’m one of 22guys in Formula One, that when weleave our hotels we get great respectfrom the fans who are cheering, shouting our names, and it’s justg reat.

“T hat’s what I look forward tomost, and obviously trying to do itagain – and I love trophies, so I don’tmind collecting a few either.”

On a circuit Vettel has made hisown over the years, he suffered a rarepoor start behind polesitter andteam-mate Mark Webber.

That allowed Mercedes’ L ew i sHamilton a chance to squeezebetween them, only to sustain aright-rear puncture after the merestof touches with the left end of Vettel’sfront wing. Hamilton was eventually

Head coach Mike Ford said: “For 80minutes I thought the team was out-standing.

“We had to take the sting out of thegame with a passionate crowd, and I

forced into retirement with severedamage to the floor of his car after hehad limped back to the pits.

Arsenal manager Wenger was right to be fuming about Wilshere’s smoking habit

Bristol Rugby 2013-14The season so far . . .

ARSENE Wenger, theArsenal manager, wasfuming recently overphotographs that ap-peared in the newspa-pers showing one ofhis star players, Jack

Wiltshire, smoking a cigarette.I know Wenger is often seen moan-

ing about one thing or another, but Ido believe he has a point on this issue.Wiltshire, who by his own admissionsays he needs to get fitter, reallyshould take a long hard look at him-self. He is arguably the brightestyoung footballer we have available toplay for our national team, but he isoften absent from games for one reas-on or another.

Smoking is something that we are

all warned about as being bad foryour health, so why a top professionalsportsman feels the need to light up isbeyond me. We need Jack fit andhealthy for England, so let’s hope hewises up and quits the cigarettes.

I have several smokers playing formy team Bishop Sutton.

Honestly, most of them comestraight off the pitch after playing,

and within seconds are puffing awayon a ciggie. This, to me, explains whymost of them run out of steam with 20minutes or so of games remaining.

One of my players admitted to mehe has tried everything to quit hiscraving for tobacco. I asked him if hehad tried the nicotine patches that Ioften see advertised on television. Hereplied that he had, and actually hadone stuck to his arm as we spoke. Iresponded by saying: “T hat’s whereyou are going wrong, you should putthe patches over your eyes.” Puzzled,he asked: “How would that work?”

Laughing, I replied, “Easy. Thatway, you can never find your cigar-ettes!”

While on the subject of smoking, Ican remember being told a funny

story a few years back about a localfootballer. This particular player wasa smoker and was reluctant to leavehis cigarettes in the changing roomsas he feared they may get stolen.

So, he decided to tuck his ciggiesand lighter into his sock when play-ing. Minutes into this particulargame, his team-mates and opponents, along with everyone else watchingwere left dumbstruck, when aftersliding into a tackle his socks caughton fire! That just goes to provesmoking is bad for your health.

Changing the subject slightly, Iplayed in a charity football matchrecently that was held at the home ofHallen Football Club.

Our team, which was lead byformer Bristol City favourite Scott

Murray, included a smattering of exCity and Rovers players, as well assome local well-known celebrities. These included weatherman AlexBeresford and the chef Dean Edwards.who appears regularly on breakfastt e l ev i s i o n .

It was quite a competitive gameuntil Hallen decided to bring on anumber of first-team players, whichmeant they then ran out easy vic-t o r s.

A decent sum of money was raisedthough for the charity, named Boobsand Balls. I was informed that eachHallen player had to raise a certainamount of cash before the match, thisthen entitled them to partake in thegame. I know organiser Mark Jakewayswas very grateful for their efforts.
