GreenThumb Relicensing Info SessionsGreenThumb

All GreenThumb gardens on NYC Parks property are required to attend one of these sessions and sign a new four-year license (2019-2022), as current licenses will expire on December 31, 2018. The NYC Parks GreenThumb license agreement is an essential part of stewarding garden spaces and helps ensure that community gardens remain valuable assets. The license agreement outlines the terms of use and rules and regulations for the garden – and this process can be intimidating but GreenThumb staff will be on hand and in your borough to answer all of your questions. Garden groups should plan to have a representative attend one of the re-licensing and information sessions listed below. Please RSVP with your Outreach Coordinator or online at bit.ly/RelicensingInfoSessions.

By-laws Requirements for the 2019 RelicensingAs we get ready for the 2019 relicensing of all GreenThumb community gardens, we would like to inform you that GreenThumb will be requiring all community garden groups under Parks jurisdiction to submit copies of their by-laws to their Outreach Coordinators as a prerequisite to being licensed. We will offer workshops on group structure and by-laws every quarter during 2018 (Organizing for Garden Success), and we encourage members of your garden groups to attend these workshops in order to help you prepare. This is a great opportunity to bolster the strength of your gardening group through a shared understanding of membership rights and responsibilities, rules and procedures, governance structure, and how the group makes decisions. Please connect with your Outreach Coordinator for more details.

To download the full by-laws worksheet, please visit tinyurl.com/GreenThumbBylaws

At the minimum, your bylaws must include the following (but you can always add more!):

• Your garden’s mission

• Membership (how to join, rights and responsibilities after joining, protocol if a member is unable to pay dues)

• Decision-making process

• Leadership structure

• Process for changing the bylaws in the future

• How the garden group handles conflicts and disputes

• Finances

• Rules for garden members (what are gardeners allowed and not allowed to do?) and procedures for what happens if a garden member does not comply with the rules of membership

GreenThumb Safe Soil Gardening RequirementsPrevent heavy metals from entering your food by adhering to the GreenThumb requirement of growing food crops in containers or raised beds lined with landscaping fabric and filled with clean topsoil and compost. In addition:

• Add organic matter such as compost to your soil. Organic particles will bind with metals and help prevent them from being absorbed by your plants.

• Keep pH levels close to neutral and make sure drainage is adequate helps to assure that the contaminants don’t move in your soil. Your ideal pH level is between 6.5 and 6.8. If soils contain heavy metals, a pH closer to 7.0 is better.

• Keep play/seating areas and pathways covered in mulch to reduce exposure to the soil.

• Wear gloves when gardening and thoroughly wash hands after gardening. Shake off any excess soil from boots and clothes before going home.

• Thoroughly wash produce and peel root vegetables before eating.

For free lumber, soil, compost, wood chips, and mulch, pick up request forms at any GreenThumb workshop! You can also download the forms at greenthumbnyc.org/resources.html after attending a GreenThumb workshop.

Art in the GardensGreenThumb’s original public art program, Art in the Gardens, started in 1985. GreenThumb is reviving this program to expand the definition of what community gardens are used for. We look to follow in the footsteps of Art in the Gardens and cultivate collaborative relationships and partnerships between local artists and community gardeners for the creation of a wide range of art works. Murals, sculptures, film screenings, performances, experimental art, music, and poetry all have a place inside community gardens. This program will:

• Review public art proposals on a rolling basis for artists and/or community garden groups that have worked collaboratively with the surrounding neighborhood to develop an art piece they wish to install in a specific community garden.

• Offer Request for Proposals (RFP) for a specific initiative

• Promote one-off performances (such as music, poetry, and film screenings) that occur in community gardens.

If your garden is interested in hosting a public art piece or you would like more information about the Art in the Gardens program, please reach out to GreenThumb’s Project Planner, Ariana Arancibia, at [email protected].

Feeding sheep was only one activity bound to delight youngsters at the early days of the City Gardeners’ Harvest Fair. Besides a petting zoo, there were hayrides, 4-H exhibits, clowns, puppets, races, and games.
