PAGE 3BASKETBALL CONT.

Christopher is a brilliant basketball player and his passion for the sport is seen at every practice and match. His leadership qualities are outstanding: he motivates the younger players with ease and also encourages his team mates to practise at weekends. His team mates look up to him and aren’t afraid to ask him for assistance. His motivation to improve and his perseverance are commendable. Christopher embodies basketball going above and beyond attending practices at school. It is a great loss to the team that he is matriculating this year.

Dakalo is an amazing basketball player with talent that is seen only in professionals. Dakalo lives and dreams basketball. He grasps new skills in seconds and is able to use everything that he has learnt during matches. He holds the game of basketball and his team mates so highly in his heart that he motivates them without even trying. His sense of humour, paired with his serious desire to win and to be great, made him a brilliant captain this year. He was able to work with the young players, guiding them wherever possible and encouraging them to improve.

PAGE 4SWIMMING

SWIMMINGSwimming in Term 1 was a great success; there were lots of new faces joining the squad as well as many old. While the term started out slowly with learners gaining their fitness after the December holiday, it was not long before the squad was organised and improving weekly. The seriously dedicated swimmers showed their commitment throughout the term and attended every practice; this made a huge impact on the team, and, as a result, by the end of Term 1, we were placing second in our weekly galas and spirit was at an all-time high. Interhigh was a huge success for Greenside High this year, with us placing second overall, missing first place by only seven points and, even more excitingly, having 12 swimmers qualify for Prestige, the term's most signifcant event.

SENIOR FULL COLOURS

It was our great pleasure to award Leilah Bhyat with Senior Full Colours, as she truly deserves it. Despite all other commitments, Leilah always finds the time to train and push herself to improve. As a result, Leilah qualified for Prestige this term for backstroke after placing 1st at Interhigh. Leilah is an enthusiastic member of the Swim Squad and never fails to support her teammates.

SENIOR FULL COLOURS

Joachim Grobbelaar has had an excellent season and qualified for Prestige in the maximum three races, Butterfly, Freestyle and the Individual Medley. Joachim has also been achieving outside of school, recently having qualified for his Level 3 swim SA. Joachim is the captain of the school squad and always exhibits excellent school spirit and a commitment to his sport, sometimes training twice a day. Joachim's dedication to the Greenside Swim Squad over the last three years has been outstanding and, as a result, he has become an irreplaceable member of the team. We congratulate him on all his tremendous achievements.

TENNIS

This year our tennis teams have been fantastic; we had more learners taking part in tennis than ever before! It was also the first time in many years we had not only one but two girls teams entered into the league and we are sure there will still be big things to come.

The boys were undefeated and some of their scores were more like a cricket score: 99-0 and 95-4! Moreover, Lwazi Ngwenya (Grade 8) was chosen for the Gauteng Provincial team.

SQUASH

This year, we had about 40 girls join Greenside High’s squash club; there were quite a number of junior new-comers and the girls are well on their way to becoming good players. The squash girls worked well as a team, to improve their game and celebrated a very successful season – but most important of all - the girls had a lot of fun playing squash!Senior Half Colours were awarded to Kamera Soodyall, Kimberly Masanzu and Progress Obiaka

Kamera Soodyall Progress Obiako

TROPHY FOR BEST PLAYER FOR GIRLS SQUASH

Kamera Soodyall is young lady who has an outstanding record of achievement for squash this year – she was the highest- ranked player and played at number one position.

She won all of her nine matches - even against the top school in the league!

This is a brilliant result and we look forward to watching her development next year.

TOUCH RUGBY

Touch Rugby has been one of the growing sports at Greenside High School. This year we had four teams: two junior teams as well as two senior teams, boys and girls.

We were very excited to have five learners playing in a Senior Provincial tournament this year and we look forward to having more learners representing the school in the Junior Provincials in September.

A big thank you to all parents who supported our teams in sad and great moments.

TROPHY FOR GREENSIDE HIGH TEAM OF THE YEAR

First Team Touch Rugby Boys

Caleb Mdiza

According to his coaches, Caleb is truly amazing. His touch mind has grown so much and he plays so well that his opponents know that, when he is on the field, Greenside is on the front foot. His vision on the field is in a class of its own. He is a player who can be relied on for his skill and leadership without fail. We are very proud to see him going to represent the country in the Junior World Cup teams in Malaysia this year. He is the well-deserving recipient of the Piontkowski Touch Rugby Player of the Year award. We have decided to create a new award not only for Caleb but for any of our learners who qualify for a natonal team that will represent South Africa in any of the recognized school sports. This award will be known as Greenside Gold!
