Editorial Comment by Elliot Ridley-Smith;Club Commercial Manager

Hello andwelcome to thelatest edition ofGREENSmagazine. Therehas been lotsgoing on sincethe last time Iwrote and Iwould like tostart off, on behalf of the Rotherfield FCcommittee, by thanking everyone whotook part in the Grand Prize Draw lastmonth. It was a very successful event,so read on to find out how much wasraised!

I also need to thank my wife Annie forher help with some of the technicalissues experienced while writing andpublishing this magazine.

We also have a special feature from anamazing Club Legend. Described as ‘atrue gentleman’ by fellow legend JustinDay and ‘the best scorer the club hasever had’ by Gary Ould. He has thehonour of being the most appearedplayer for the club with nearly 900appearances for the greens and nettingover 500 goals. It can only be DaveHarman. I hope you enjoy the thoughtsand memories of one of Rotherfield’sfinest players.

“The Club has reached a turningpoint in its illustrious 120 yearhistory.”

The next big piece of news are theforth-coming plans for ‘Operation Step7’. The Club has reached a turning point

in its illustrious 120 year history. Aspart of the Mid-Sussex League andSussex FA’s plans to enter onto the firstrung of the FA’s Step Pyramid, Step 7,Rotherfield FC are endeavouring on anambitious project to prepare the club tomeet the FA’s Step 7 criteria.

In brief, the club needs to establishimprovements to the clubhouseincluding toilet and shower facilities forboth players and officials.

Club is initially looking at plans todevelop the current facilities so they arein line with requirements to meet Step7 criteria, which is estimated to costaround £15,000.

First team captain Paul Barnes and Ihave been working hard looking atwhere the Club could secure financialsupport form organisations that providegrants for projects like this.

Once this is complete, the Club maylook at developing the facilities furtherto make a great facility to come andplay football at, but that is quite a wayinto the future!

We have a great playing surface withplans in place to significantly improvethe lower pitch with a professionalcontractor and to continue maintainingthe great surface we have on the mainpitch at the end of this season. Withthis in mind, the Club is eager to beready to progress to the next level forthe 2016/17 season.

We are Club that wants its players toaspire to the highest possible level theycan. With the right playing surfaces inplace and the right facilities in place,we aim to be the Club that people want

Page 4: Greens Magazine

to play for because of the facilities weprovide and the opportunities available.

So, if you are keen to be part of thisClub’s ambitious plans, then please letPete Ford or myself know on 07714837 297 or 07717 567 666. Have anythoughts or ideas on how we can reachour aims or if you have any skills thatmight help us such as decorating,building, plumbing etc then don’t be shy,get involved, we’ve go a lot of work todo!

Grand Draw

Towards the end of last year,Rotherfield Football Club held it’s muchanticipated Grand Draw, to help raisefunds for the running costs of the Club.

“This was a very ambitiousfund-raising event”

This was a very ambitious fund-raisingevent and the Club had never held suchan event before so it was uncharteredterritory for all involved in sellingtickets.

Third Team Manager Mark Powell presents thecoveted replica England 1966 shirt signed byClub President and World Cup Winner GeorgeCohen MBE.

In a space of nine months, we had tosell as many tickets as possible toanyone and everyone we could.

After much arm-twisting, bribing,badgering and being the bane of theClub’s membership, we managed to sellover 2,500 tickets.

The draw was held in early December,combining a Christmas party for thewhole club.

“we managed to sell over 2,500tickets.”

So, after what turned out to be a verysuccessful event, the Club committeewould like to thank every one who bothsold and bought tickets through out thenine months. A special mention toBecky Haygarth for providing thechildrens entertainment and to Harry‘Sinatra’ Hickmott for his vocal virtuoso.

Fond Fairwell

During the Christmas period,Rotherfield FC announced that it’sChairman, Colin Clibbens was to resignfrom his post. On behalf of everyone atthe Club we would like to thank Colinfor his input over the last few years andwish all the best for the future and hopehe continues to follow the Club.

So the next question is who wants to fillthis position? The Club is looking forsomeone who is enthusiastic in whatwe are doing and someone who canlead the club in the right direction. Withthe proposed plans ahead, this is agreat time for someone who iscommitted to driving the Club forward.

So, if you are interested in filling theposition of Club Chairman, then pleasecontact Pete Ford on 07714 837 297. Ihope you enjoy this lasted issue of themagazine and I look forward to writingto you soon.

On the Pitch

Kicking off with our Junior Squads, ourU11 have not had a competitive gamethis year so far but remain in secondplace in the Albion Division.Congratulations must also go to ourU11s for coming runners up in theirpre-Christmas league with four wins, adraw and a loss. They are currentlyunbeaten since the 2nd game of theseason.

Our U12 squad have played threefixtures in the New Year winning 3-2against Tonbridge Cyclones, then losing4-2 to Jarvis Brook and 7-1 to TWForesters. However the side site in 4th

place with games in hand.

“Congratulations must also go toour U11s for coming runners up intheir pre-Christmas league”

Next, the U14 & U15 squads have beenstruggling this season with both teamsnot winning a game so far and beingdealt heavy defeats. Our U14’s play inthe Weald of Kent Friendly League atU15 level with a few U15 players in thesquad. However the U15 squad in theCrowborough League, despite notwinning a game, results continue toimprove.

Moving on to our U16 squad who havefaired much better then their fellowsquads. The currently reside in in 6th

place with 6 wins out 11 games. Theirrecent fixtures have been a 2-1 defeatto Paddock Wood in the KO Cup, a 2-1win against Tonbridge Wanderers and a3-1 win over Beckley Rangers. This is agreat set of results considering theyhave only been able to field 10 players!

Finally, our U18 squad, who have beenplaying up a year (so most of the squadconsist of 16 year old players), havebeen struggling this season with onlyone win out of 10. Also it is worthbearing in mind that they are not onlyplaying up a year but also playing in thehighest division.

“we should congratulate all of ouryouth players that have comefrom our U18 squad”

Now moving on to our Senior Squadsand before we look at how well thesquads have been doing, we shouldcongratulate all of our youth playersthat have come from our U18 squadand have been playing regularly for allthree squads, players of the like ofJames Harris, Marcus Williams, HarryChittenden,

Though special mention must go toCameron Fyfe, who has been a regularfeature in our first team this season inhis début season at mens football. Healso recently made his first start withPete Ford’s squad. It has beenrecognised by players, spectators andcoaches a like of his quality.

We hope all the of the youth playersthat have come through to mensfootball will continue to develop with usand enjoy their footballing experience inthe years to come.

Moving on to the Third Team progress,ran by Mark Powell. Unfortuately, thesquad hasn’t played since December sothere is little to report except that theteam continue to improve year on yearand currently occupy third place inDivision 11.

Page 6: Greens Magazine

Next our Second Team ran by Gary Ould.Despite looking like having a promisingseason with much more depth in thesquad with a number of players thathave or often feature in the first team,it is supprising that their season hasproduce mixed results and currentlyoccupying a mid-table position.

Results include wins against AshurstWood (1-5), Danehill (4-6) and SportingElite (3-2).

“With the run up to Christmas, theboys put in some greatperformances”

Finally, on to our First Team ran by PeteFord. This season was always going tobe formidable with high expectations topush for a top-half finish in the PremierLeague.

With the run up to Christmas, the boysput in some great performances withsome excellent results including a 0-4win away to Montpelier Villa, a 2-0 winat home to Balcome, a 5-3 win at hometo rivals Jarvis Brook, a 6-0 win at hometo Lindfield and a 0-1 win away to OldVarndeaninas on the expansive 3Gsurface be hind the Amex Stadium (thatwas the first time in a number ofattempts the first team had beaten theOlv V’s first team on the 3G). Also somegreat acquisitions to the side haveadded to the squads strength with thereturn of Ollie Hume (who travels all theway from Reading to play) and Rob Pellwho is proving to be a tenaciousforward.

Also, Ford’s squad are still in theMontgomery Cup with a Quarter Finaltie at home to Old Varndeanians on the21st February.

15 Questions With Dave Harman

We have been extremely privileged inthis edition of GREENS magazine tohave one of the greatest players to evergrace the Recreation Ground atRotherfield FC. This player hasappeared in games and netted goalsfor the club making him the mostappeared player and also being theClub’s second highest goal scorerthrough out the club’s recorded history.Sit back, relax and enjoy this amazinginsight to Rotherfield FC’s ‘Gentlemanof the Club.’

Page 10: Greens Magazine

Tell us about your first goal for the club;

“Crikey, that was a long time ago(1974), and I would have only been 14!I started playing for the 2nd team in myfirst season in division 4 of theTonbridge League. For some strangereason I seem to remember I scored 25goals that season but unfortunatelycan’t recollect my first one.”

Who was your childhood inspiration toplay football;

“That would have been my Dad, as heplayed for Rotherfield. As I grew upand went up the rec and watched thegames, I wanted to play and half timewas great, for as kids, we got thechance to run onto the hallowed turf(mud sometimes) and try to score goalswhen they had the nets up!”

Who did you enjoy playing with themost;

“I must have played with literallyhundreds and hundreds of guys and topick out any favourites is virtuallyimpossible. However, I would say Imust have played around 700 gameswith Chris Buck so we must have got onpretty well, and we had one thing incommon, neither of us were greattacklers!”

Tell us about your most memorablemoments at the club;

Memorable moments would include;getting to and playing in the SussexJunior Cup Final back in 1976 (weeventually lost in a replay), managingthe 1st team, scoring my 500th goal, andscoring the winning goal in the EdgarGerman/Stubbins cup final in around2001?”

Why play for Rotherfield and notanywhere else at the time;

“I lived and grew up in Rotherfield, andcould see the pitch from my house, sowho else was I going to play for! Iloved it so much I never played foranyone else. I have done various jobsfor the club over the years, I wasgroundsman for awhile, committeemember for many years, 2nd team then1st team manager in the late 70s andearly 80s, and even the barman for afew years! Many a time I canremember staggering out the pavilionlate on a Saturday evening, with thetakings, and tripping arse over headover the cricket ropes round the square!Aaah, such great memories!”

What game did you score the mostgoals in;

“I remember scoring 5 in one game(away at Wealden I think). I hadmissed the start of the season andVinny [Justin Day] had already scored 7goals before I had even played a game!This was my first game back and ithelped me close the gap a little, thoughI never did score more than him! I alsoremember scoring a hatrick ofpenalties in one game and I missedanother!”

Where was your favourite away venueand why;

“There was always something specialabout playing at Jarvis Brook. Itcertainly wasn’t the playing surface butit was the local rivalry! Many of thesurfaces we played on years ago weresomewhat agricultural, and our pitchwas one of the worst. I can rememberwallowing in mud over my ankles on

Page 11: Greens Magazine

our pitch around the centre circle (andwhen it was really bad it really smeltterrible), and look at it now, it’s one ofthe best playing surfaces outside of thePremiership!”

What was your worst game(s) and why;

I had very few worst games over theyears (most were enjoyable, and somewere very enjoyable), but two lingerlonger than most, Royal Oak at home;this was a Sunday game and I wasselected by them as the person to befelled the most, eventually I reactedand once two of their players had beensent off, one returned to the pitchwielding an iron bar! The referee and Ineeded a change of underwear afterthe game, but luckily he was wrestledto the ground by his fellow playersbefore he was able to reach us. Theydid rearrange the away changing roomwhile they cooled off! We did win thegame but an armed guard was neededto get me and the ref out of the ground!The other memorable game was awaydown near Ditchling somewhere andagain it was a game with a number of‘disagreements’ and their referee hadtotally lost control and I remembertowards the end of the game chasingone of their players after he hadsplattered Karl Day to the ground offthe ball, and slapping him terribly hardon the back of the head as he ran off,which hurt my hand a lot more than ithurt him! I think we lost the game andI lost my dignity on that day! I wasn’ta violent player, indeed I used to play inslippers most games, I never reallytackled anyone and as a consequencewas not wanted in our 18 yard box, andwas never sent off and only bookedonce (in the Royal Oak game) to try and

calm down the nutters in the otherteam!

How do you feel the club is doing as awhole for both juniors and seniors;

The clubs appears to be exceptionallyhealthy now and in very good hands.In the late 80s/early 90s there was nojunior football and we were down to oneSaturday side at one stage and the clubwas close to folding.

Can you see Rotherfield reaching theCounty League;

I don’t feel qualified to say if they will orwon’t, but what I can say is it is great tohave a dream. However, I think it ismore important to enjoy playing yourfootball (at whatever standard) in anattractive, attacking, skilful way, and ingood spirit.

What challenges do you feel grassrootlevel clubs face for the future;

I think the biggest challenge forgrassroots football is that it needscommitted individuals to make thingshappen and the club is blessed withgreat guys like like Pete Ford, Gary Ould,Dave Hacker and Roddy Harman (andothers) to make it work. Withoutindividuals like them, many of the goodthings that people take for granted atclubs wouldn’t happen.

What was your biggest achievement asa player;

I think one of my biggest achievementsas a player was to play as many gamesas I did, for as long as I did (over 30years), given that I had a bad kneeinjury at 18 (when I tore my cruciateligament) which meant I missedvirtually all of that season and it

Page 12: Greens Magazine

periodically gave way through mycareer. It just shows that if you reallyreally want to do something you cansucceed, and as a wise old sage said tome once, you will have many yearswhen you can’t play football.Generally I was pretty lucky with injuries,as I only suffered a broken nose,dislocated finger, a couple of crackedribs, and torn calf muscles/achillestendon problems towards the end of myplaying career.

Give us your all time best RFC line upwith people only you have played with;

Very very difficult for me, as I haveplayed with so many great players. Soapologies to those not mentioned, but ifI have to pick a squad of 16 for a one-off, must win game, it would be;

Adrian Barber, Dave Wright, John Ralph,Pete Ford, Dave Capp, Roddy Harman,Micky Harman, Gary Ould, Robin Singer,Dave Harman & Micky Mann. Subswould be; Vinny Day, Bev Barnes, PaulGriffin, Graham Remnant, and Ray

Pennels.

Who were your toughest opponents toplay against;

We had a hard time in the TonbridgeLeagues top division for many yearsand did well to stay there for quite anumber of seasons, but teams likeSpartak, High Brooms Casuals,Southborough and Capel were usuallytoo strong for us. I still have thescars to prove that some of them weretougher than others!

Do you have any footballingsuperstitions;

Yes, not to upset Pete Ford, not to gettackled by Gary Ould and to not pass toVinny Day as he scored more goals thanme!

What are you doing now;

Nowadays, I still manage to hobble outand play cricket for Rotherfield duringthe summer months, and in the footballseason I just hibernate.
