I S S U E
Welcome 2016 It’s a new year that comes with new hopes and goals. My hope is that for the many of you that set New Year’s goals, you are still on track; remember it takes small steps to make big progress.
This year, we hope that you take one step closer to supporting your local community. Perhaps that step is by contributing once a year to the voluntary Acres Green Home Owners’ Association (AGHOA). This small contribution supports many items during the year including the electricity used to light the sign at the east entrance to the neighborhood, delivery of this very newsletter you are reading, improvements to the front garden on Acres Green Drive, matching gift projects for the neighborhood, and the annual 4th of July Parade and Ice Cream Social. Please consider helping out this year.
Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 18 at 7:00 pm in the meeting room of the fire station on Maximus & Yosemite. We will be discussing scheduling the upcoming Neighborhood Garage Sale. Your input on dates would be appreciated. We hope to see you there!

Many thanks t o eve r yone who worked so hard to clear the sidewalks so children and adults alike can safely walk in the neighborhood.
During a recent snowfall there were some questions raised on our Nextdoor website regarding who is responsible for shoveling snow on the sidewalks, particularly on those around the school. Basically it boils down to the property owner next to the sidewalk is responsible for removing the snow on that sidewalk.
The Douglas County School District is responsible for removing the snow on sidewalks adjacent to their property.
South Suburban Parks and Recreation is responsible for removing the snow on the sidewalks next to their property. The trails that are not paved are not considered sidewalks.
The following information regarding snow removal was on the Douglas County website. It is important to remember that Acres Green is in unincorporated Douglas County.
Sidewalk shoveling• Property owners in unincorporated Douglas County are required to remove snow and ice from the sidewalks adjacent to their property within 24 hours after it stops snowing.
• When shoveling snow it should be placed on adjacent landscaping not in the public right-of-way.
The following information lists the order in which the county clears the roadways.
Prioritization of Roadways for Snow Removal
1—Arterial roadways (major roadways with high traffic and high operating speeds) are always addressed first.
2—Collector roadways/school bus routes (those between arterial roadways and residential streets)
3—Local streets and cul-de-sacs: these are plowed during every storm unless accumulations are minor and are expected to melt the following day. Residents are advised to move vehicles off the street if a snow storm is forecast to allow safe access by snowplows.

Meeting adjourned to Swingers for a holiday social.
Keep Warm, but Safe
December, January and February are the deadliest months for home fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). And, heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fires and home fire deaths. That’s why it’s important for you and your loved ones to take extra precautions during the winter.
Thinking of buying a space heater? The NFPA recommends that you make sure it carries the mark of an independent testing laboratory. Install it according to the manufacturer’s instructions or have it professionally installed. If you have an electric-powered space heater,
plug it into an outlet with sufficient capacity. Never use an extension cord.
Turn off space heaters whenever the room is unoccupied or when manufacturer’s instructions say they should be turned off. Portable space heaters are easy to knock over in the dark. Turn them off when you go to bed, or at least make sure they’re placed in lighted areas or out of high-traffic areas.
If you use a fireplace or wood stove, use only dry, seasoned wood to avoid the build-up of creosote, an oily deposit that easily catches fire and accounts for most chimney fires and the largest share of home-heating fires. Use only paper or kindling wood, not a flammable liquid, to start the fire. Do not use artificial logs in wood stoves.
Make sure your fireplace has a sturdy screen to prevent sparks from flying into the room.
After the ashes are cool, dispose of them in a metal container, which is kept a safe distance from your home.
Make sure fuel-burning equipment is vented to the outside, that the venting is kept clear and unobstructed, and that the exit point is properly sealed around the vent. This is to make sure deadly carbon monoxide does not build up in the home
Other reminders from the National Fire Protection Association include:
• Don’t use your oven to heat your home.
• Inspect all heating equipment annually, and clean as necessary.
• Test smoke alarms monthly; install a carbon monoxide alarm outside each sleeping area.

GreenleafPage 10
Buzzzz, buzzzz, buzzzzCan you hear the bees? I can’t either right now
but I hope that this summer I will. I love to have a good strong cup (or two) of coffee in the morning as well as several at work. But straight black coffee? No way, I need it sweetened up (that’s what makes me such a sweet guy).
For years I put sugar in my coffee. Somehow, when I don’t remember anymore, I tried honey and I was hooked. No more of the white stuff, what I really enjoyed was the different sweetness that honey adds to the coffee.
For those of you that use it – you know what I’m talking about. I’m sure that you also know honey is not cheap. Every time my wife goes to the store I hear how expense my habit is. For years I sucked it up and paid through the nose because I loved it.
A few months ago, I was checking out this website where inventors and startup folks try to raise money for the “next great thing.” The site is called Indiegogo. Check it out sometime as there are a lot of neat things and ideas that need funding.
I found two guys, a father and son, from Australia that invented a way to harvest honey from the hive without a lot of the mess. It is called a Flow Hive. It is rather ingenious in that instead of using the smoke to calm the bees, pulling out the honeycomb and extracting the honey, these guys came up with a way to “crank” out the honey through splitting the honeycomb which allows the honey to flow down through tubes where the honey flows right into jars.
I thought this was a cool idea so I decided to purchase one. It showed up a few weeks ago and I put it all together but I’m still waiting on the flow tubes. We have ordered the queen and several thousand worker bees. They should arrive late April, early May.
Besides the hope that I can supplement my honey habit, we hope to help with the bee population and the dwindling bees due to disease because we all need the bees to pollinate the food we eat.
I’m not professing to be a beekeeper, nor do I really know what I’m getting into at this point, but I’m looking forward to having a hive and the benefits it will bring to not only the garden flowers and planting that my wife does each year but to help with all the growing things in Acres Green that need that little extra “buzzz” as well as helping with my habit.
Later this year I’ll let you all know how the hive (and honey) are doing.
