Did you know?Each year, FFA chapters around the country celebrate National FFA Week. The

week-long tradition began in 1947 when the National FFA Board of Directors desig-nated the week of George Washington’s birthday as National FFA Week in recogni-tion of his legacy as an agriculturist and farmer. The first National FFA Week was held in 1948. Today, FFA Week always runs Saturday to Saturday and encompasses Feb. 22, Washington’s birthday.

National FFA Week did not start out as a week-long event. At first it was National FFA Day. The 1933 National FFA Convention Proceedings records the beginning of FFA Day in this way: “Stewart of Montana requested the floor at this time to present a matter of general interest. He suggested the idea of having a special Future Farmer Day some time during 1934, preferably on one of the regular national FFA broadcast-ing days. It was pointed out that the various state associations could perhaps plan special state broadcasts also on that day and that chapters might plan their father and son banquets on the date specified. The idea seemed to meet with general del-egate approval and after some discussion it was moved by Stewart that the Board of Trustees arrange for such a day; motion passed.”

Educate and advocate!National FFA Week is an opportunity for FFA members, alumni and sponsors to

advocate for agricultural education and FFA. It’s a time to share with local, state and national audiences what FFA is and the impact it has on members every day.

National FFA week: Feb. 18-25, 2017

The Annual FFA Banquet is an opportunity to recognize the outstanding achieve-ments of the youth in the various chapter of the Greene County FFAs. The Greene County FFA s will hold the 50th Annual FFA Banquet on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at 7:00 pm in the Assembly Hall at the Greene County Fairgrounds. Many awards will be presented to local FFA members recognizing their participation in career develop-ment events, community service activities, and special achievement awards. Along with recognizing the FFA members, local businesses and individuals will be honored for their support of the agriculture education programs in Greene County.

Local community leaders, alumni, and friends of the FFA are cordially invitedto join members, parents, and other guests for an enjoyable evening of celebration. Reservations and tickets are available by contacting any FFA advisor at the local schools or by calling 372-6941 extension 169.

The Xenia FFA Chapter will hold our annual AG Day on May 11, 2017 at the Greene County Fairgrounds. This is one of our major events on the year and educates 5th graders in Xenia school system about all things Ag related. Our chapter members begin planning in late January and we work diligently every day in order to get every-thing ready for around 400 5th graders. We have multiple sta-tions set up for the 5th graders to participate in. Each station has a Xenia High School FFA member running it. Last year was very successful. There were many members that stepped up in showing their respect to the teachers and students. This year will mark our 10th Annual Ag Day so we are going all out. We are going to be adding new sta-tions so that the students will

get to experience more through their agricultural experience. Our stations vary from having 6 different animals to making a garden in a glove and donations. Some other stations that we are adding would be meeting the officers and fish and wildlife. During this we have a break so the students and our members can eat lunch and then they can go back to learning about agricultural. Ag Day helps our members with their communica-tion skills, leadership, and work-ing together. This day is very important to us because we feel we need to educate the 5th grad-ers about what many people do in our community to help feed the world.

At the beginning of the school year, Cedarville-GCCC FFA Members held a community-wide, and school-wide drive to collect household items, clothing, food, and personal items for victims from the Louisiana Floods. The students collected over 3,000 items that were shipped directly to shelters in Louisiana.

The students raised almost $300 for the shipping, and the Beavercreek UPS Store donated the remaining shipping. The stu-dents were able to receive updates from individuals receiving the items from the shelters. Additionally, local news cover-age was provided to the students; which was very exciting as well.

Two Cedarville-GCCC FFA mem-bers attended the first-ever Confer-ence on Character that was hosted by the Ohio FFA at Central State Uni-versity. Kayla Hor-ney and Bel Martin attended the event of approximately 50 students. The meeting focused on having good values, and making choices based on your mor-als instead of the ‘popular’ thing to do. The students had a wonderful time and look for-ward to having more students attend next year.

From leadership conferences, to group trips, speeches, and competi-tions, the Xenia FFA chapter has cul-tivated a multitude of opportunities for success and personal growth for its members. Through these activi-ties, students learn life skills such as fiscal responsibility, communication, and public speaking, with career based experiences scattered throughout. The goal of the chapter is to transform members into tomorrow’s leaders and amplify their service in each oppor-tunity that presents itself. As a fresh-man and new FFA member, I chose to commit myself to the program, and four years later, I am thankful I did. The experiences that the FFA offered helped me conquer my fear of public speaking, lead others, and grow into a confident and driven individual. The Cedarville-GCCC FFA Chapter is plan-ning to host their annual Pancake Breakfast on April 29th from 8-11am in the Cedarville-GCCC Cafeteria. The students will have pancakes, sausage, and drinks available for a free-will donation. Additionally, student

The 2016/ 2017 Greeneview FFA Officer Team President Madison Kilbarger , Vice President Brad Eakle, Secretary Nick Shaw, Trea-surer Dalton Bull, Reporter Kelcee Marcum, Sentinel Riley kilbarger and Student Advisor Cody Rowe and all the active members would like to thank everyone who sup-ported the club and their annual Fruit Sale. The fruit sale proceeds pay for students to compete in the various FFA competitions and activities. This year students com-peted in General Livestock Judging, Soil Judging (land evaluation), Par-liamentary Procedure, and Public Speaking.

This year Madison Kilbarger and Cody Myers received the State Farmer Degree in Columbus Ohio. The chapter was also honored at the State Convention for their con-tribution to Church World Services.

The Greeneview chapter sent del-egates to the National Convention in Indianapolis. Cole Hiser received the American Farmer degree. This is a great honor that took a lot of work and dedication to earn.

All members helped install a Frisbee Disc Golf Course located at the school that is open to the pub-lic during after school hours. FFA Members learned hands on skills such as measuring, drafting, and using tools.

Students enjoyed supporting the Jamestown Lions Club Parade by decorating and entering the float in the parade. Special thanks to the Mr. Kent Clark for driving, provid-ing a trailer andsupporting the Club.

The Sentinel is stationed by the door and makes sure the door is open to our friends at all times. The Xenia FFA Chapter holds many events each quarter for students. One of our most important events for new members is when we hold our Chapter Green Hand breakfast on Novem-ber 6, 2016, for 21 first year students earning their Green hand degree. The officer team cooked green pancakes, green eggs, and bacon before school and students were invited to come in and enjoy a nice breakfast before their school day began. We also held a Green Hand Banquet at our chapter meeting on the night

of November 6 in which the parents and friends of the students receiving this award were invited to attend. Earn-ing the Green Hand degree is the first step to a successful FFA career. It shows your commitment to go going the extra mile both inside and outside the classroom. The students must set a plan to complete an SAE, and pass a test covering the basic knowl-edge of the local, State, and National FFA Chapter. The Xenia FFA is very excited about what the future holds for these exceptional students.

This winter Cedarville-GCCC FFA Members decided to hold a winter cloth-ing drive to help provide warm hats, scarfs, gloves, and coats for a homeless shelter and free store in Xenia. The clothing drive was extremely success-

ful! Nearly 200 items of clothing were collected and distributed to the groups selected to receive them. Thank you to all the students and classes who partici-pated! They plan to repeat the project next year.

Each year the Greene County FFA Alumni sponsor the Tractor Rodeo for all youth taking tractor projects through 4-H.

The Greene County FFA Alumni meets the last Tuesday of each month. All former alumni are invited to join this very active organization. One of the primary activities promoted are the Kiddie Tractor Pulls. The Alumni also provides scholarships for area high school seniors who will be pursuing further education in agriculture. We do many Career Development Events or CDE. In these contests we compete with other chapters around the state of Ohio to test our knowledge and see how we stack up. We began the year with the Soils contest. We judged both rural and urban soils in this contest which involved FFA participants study-ing soil types, properties, and overall risks (ie. erosion). After the Soils con-test, we turned our attention to the Ag Food Science and Technology contest. In this event, we were required to com-pete in the areas of aroma identifica-tion, flavor identification, triangle test, food safety identification, food analysis, customer inquiry, and product develop-ment. Parliamentary procedure was the topic of our next CDE. This event judged our officer team and other mem-bers on our knowledge and expertise of Roberts Rules of Order. This contest was held at Cedarville High School and our team placed 6th in the District.

Spring CDE’s are right around the

corner and will include poultry manage-ment, dairy products and technology, equine science, and general livestock. Our chapter hopes to continue its suc-cess in the poultry contest this year, after finishing in the top five in the state in each of the last two years. We also plan on having several members par-ticipate in public speaking. The public speaking contest consist of both pre-pared speech competitions and extem-poraneous speech competitions. The freshman will also get have the chance to take place in the FFA Creed speak-ing contest also. There is also an online exam called the Ag Cooperative Educa-tion contest. This is an online exam that covers a wide spectrum of ag-related and FFA related questions. Our team has also been successful in this contest, placing 2nd and 4th respectively, in 2014 and 2015.

The Xenia FFA chapter has been extremely busy this school year. Many Xenia High school students and FFA alumni participated in the tractor drive in on September 12th. Our students and alumni woke up bright and early to drive their tractors to Xenia High School. The tractor drive in promotes farm safety week and reminded drivers to be patient and cautious while driving on the roads behind tractors and farming equip-ment. Students in the chapter sold fruit, nuts, cheese, and different types of meat to help raise money for the many activi-ties that the students participate in. This fundraiser allowed students to acquire many business skills such as marketing, customer service, communication, and leadership. On September 21st students attended the Farm science review in Lon-don, Ohio at the Molly Caren Agricultur-al Center. Here the students got to learn about the latest agricultural innovations from experts from the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sci-ences (CFAES) at The Ohio State Uni-versity. Nearly 180 educational presenta-tions and opportunities were presented by educators, specialists and faculty from Ohio State University Extension and the Ohio Agricultural Research and Devel-opment Center. The students loved the experience and even got out of school for a day.

On October 19th-21st the Xenia FFA chapter attended the 89th National FFA convention held in Indianapolis, Indiana. 63,000 FFA members and guests from

across the country participated in vari-ous events such as general sessions, com-petitive events, educational tours, lead-ership workshops, volunteer activities and more. XHS FFA students met FFA members from around the United States and were met students who shared the same love and passion for agriculture as them. Some of our former FFA students received their American Degree which is a major accomplishment that took lots of time and dedication. Less than 1% of active FFA members per year earn this degree. This year Ben Harner earned this degree. Ben graduated from Xenia High School in 2015 and attends Ohio State ATI.

Community service is something that the Xenia FFA is very passionate about doing and the students love giving back to the community. This year the chapter has participated in many community service activities such as well water test-ing and Adopt-A-Highway. On October 6th FFA students spent their afternoon cleaning a section US 68 to show love for the environment as well as the com-munity. These experiences allow the students to learn responsibility and show pride in bettering the planet. Students volunteered to help test residents well water for free as well. Many people don’t know how dangerous water can be with-out knowing exactly what it contains.

This winter Cedarville-GCCC FFA Members decided to volunteer to help distribute holiday meals at the food bank at the Presbyterian Church in Cedarville-GCCC.

The FFA members volunteered

passing meals out to the families. They enjoyed their day of service, and the organization plans to con-tinue volunteering at monthly distri-butions. Additionally, a spring food drive is planned.

The rising sun is a new token in agriculture. Through the Xenia FFA, I have learned several skills inside and outside the classroom. Inside the classroom we have learned information from all categories including, business, animal science, and horticulture. One of my favorite in class activities is the animal science sec-tion of the course. We have learned how to properly ear notch pig ears and identify parts of cattle. Outside the classroom, I have par-ticipated in many career development events, ranging from poultry judging to speech con-tests. These events offer a variety of life skills for the students to grasp ahold of. It offers a combative approach for students to take while testing their knowledge at the same time.

Xenia FFA is a diverse chapter with stu-dents from many different backgrounds. Approximately 50% of the Xenia FFA chapter has no prior experience in rural farm work. These students are just as engaged in the activities as those who do live in rural Ameri-ca. The diversity develops many communica-tion skills through partner based activities at meetings. At each meeting we try to expand the students’ knowledge about parliamentary procedures and how to properly run a busi-ness meeting. Along with the business por-tion of the meeting there is social time to get to know each other. The Xenia FFA chapter is making its best effort to create a new era in agriculture by preparing students for the future.

This year, the Cedarville-GCCC FFA Chapter has decided to add a few new FFA Career Development Events (CDEs) to their list of activities. Three students tried the Job Interview CDE where they participate in a mock job interview process, make resumes and cover letters, write follow-up letters, and complete job applications. The students who tried this contest were: Megan Britton, Rebecca Harris, and Merrick Garcia. Megan placed 6th and Rebecca placed 3rd at the Subdistrict

Contest. Merrick placed 2nd at the subdistrict contest and moved on to the district contest, where he placed 6th. Four students created a Food Science CDE Team to compete at the District 9 Food Science contest. Students learned about food safety, identifying food scents and tastes, and learned to respond to consumer concerns. The students on the team included: Rebecca Harris, Sydney Wright, Emma Egge-man, and Jackson Ryman. The students placed 14th at the contest.

The Xenia FFA Chapter had an extremely successful fundraiser with our fruit sales for the 2016-2017 school year. Students sold a variety of fruits, nuts, cheeses, beef sticks, sausage, and beef jerky. The money we raised goes towards paying for events, like AG day, our Chapter meetings, and contests. Through these fundraisers, students learn business management skills includ-ing money management, marketing, customer service, communication, and leadership. Students also learned

how to promote and advertise for the Xenia FFA chapter in a positive way. We are also planning to do many more fundraising events, which will be coordinated by the fundrais-ing committee. We are planning a bake sale at one of the boys’ home basketball games, a 50/50 raffle, and a photo booth during lunch for all Xenia High School students.
