Greendale Health Department Board of Health Report 09/2018Vision Statement: We are a leader in planting the seeds of wellness that support healthy residents and a sustainable
environment for a diverse community
Communicable Disease Control and Prevention
Staff collaborated with Martin Luther High School to
provide immunizations to students in need of vaccines.
Many of the students had complicated immunization
records from other countries, which made entering their
information into the state's immunization record a
challenge! Theresa Rypel did a super job with that!
We worked with medical offices and provided follow up
on foodborne illnesses, including salmonella and
campylobacter, and several cases of sexually transmitted
infections.
Staff provided a tuberculosis presentation at a southeast
regional training session.

Environmental Health
Staff presented on tick and mosquito disease prevention
at the Wehr Nature Center in partnership with Franklin,
Hales Corners, and Greenfield Health Department. The
families especially enjoyed a hands-on activity of using a
tweezers to remove some pretend ticks from a stuffed
animal!
We contacted the Southeast Radon Education Center as
we are planning to hold a community presentation on
the topic in January, 2019, as that is National Radon
Awareness Month.
Programs
Injury Prevention
Monthly
Staff collaborated with the Fire Department to offer "Stop the Bleed" classes to Village employees this month.
The classes teach participants how and when to use a tourniquet and apply a pressure dressing.
Cathy Trecek, PHN, and Mary Jean Green, held a Stepping On fall prevention "booster" class for individuals that
participated in the summer program. Staff also worked to prepare for the beginning of a new, 7-week session
which begins on October 3rd.
Mental Health
Monthly
The Greendale School District invited the Health Department to join their leadership team which has a focus on
social-emotional learning. We will be working with the school district to implement a social-emotional curriculum
at all the schools. Social and emotional learning is the process through which children and adults acquire and
effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and
achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make
responsible decisions.
Emergency Preparedness
Monthly
Ashley Haas, our Emergency Preparedness Coordinator attended 4 days of emergency preparedness training. The
training gave Ashley certification in advanced Incident Command skills. Staff held a community volunteer
training session on 9/26 in which 20 residents learned about our community's annual point of dispensing exercise
held at the Greendale High School. Two resident volunteer coordinators helped with creating and leading the
training session. Staff were busy this month preparing for the 10/23 flu clinic at the high school. We will again
have assistance from the Greendale Fire and Police Departments, Marquette Nursing students, and a large
number of community volunteers.

Successful Aging (SAGE): This committee met on 9/10/18. They are finalizing the Livable Community strategic plan,
which includes focus areas of transportation, communication, outdoor spaces and parks, and health care (dementia-
friendly community). This committee will be presenting at the 10/16 Village Trustee meeting on their accomplishments
and next steps. Thirteen individuals participated in two days of training on the Music and Memory Program for
individuals and families with dementia. The Village of Greendale is now a Certified Music and Memory Program! We look
forward to providing personalized music to individuals with dementia.
Community Health Improvement Workgroups
Monthly
Food and Nutrition: This committee met on 9/12/18. They celebrated a very successful growing season at the
community and school garden! A community garden potluck was held on 9/23/18 and approximately 100+
individuals attended! The group is hoping to have the community garden participate in a food donation program
next summer, as there is usually leftover produce available each week.
Step Up: This committee staffed the Open Market booth on 9/15. The committee is busy planning the 10/21 Fun
Run and Walk. They are still looking for volunteers to help with that program, as usually more than 800
individuals participate in the event!
Substance Use Prevention: This committee met on 9/17 and had individuals share their recovery stories at the
meeting. The committee is working on a stigma-reduction campaign, a 1/30/19 community health and wellness event,
a community resource guide, and a new public service announcement on opioid abuse at the Marcus BistroPlex.
Madeline Eisen educated 25+ families at the Fire Department's Open House on the different places a teen might hide
alcohol or drugs. Madeline obtained a traveling display on the topic from the Oak Creek Health Department.
Vital Statistics/Surveillance/Administrative
