WHAT IS THE MOVIE BASED ON
The Lorax delivers a strong message about conservation, and like Wall-E, it shows us the future if
people continue in their materialistic ways. Big businesses are demonized with greed, pollution, greed
and money, and have no interest for other people and our natural environment.
PLOT
Thneedville is an isolated town, run by a crooked entrepreneur called O’Hare (head of a bottled air
company), where there are no trees or any natural flora for that matter (except for humans). A 12
year old boy named Ted (Zac Effron) has a crush on a high school girl called Audrey (Taylor Swift).
Audrey wants to have her very own Truffula tree growing in her backyard. Trying to impress Audrey,
Ted hears of a mysterious hermit called the Once-ler (Ed Helms) from his Grammy Norma (Betty
White). Ted sneaks out of town to find out what happened to the trees. He finds that outside of
Thneedville is an empty and polluted wasteland – which was actually caused by the Once-ler. Flash
backs show the Once-ler harvesting the last of the world’s Truffula Trees to make his invention called a
Thneed (which can be made into almost anything). Ted finds the Once-ler who tells him the history of
the Truffula Trees and their guardian, The Lorax. The Once-ler gives Ted the last remaining Truffula
seed in the hope that he may be able to restore the environment. O’Hare does everything he can to
stop Ted, so that his business of selling oxygen bottles is not impacted.
MY OPINION
It is easy to follow the simple story line with a great set of characters. There is a very obvious message
about the importance of conservation and the beauty of the natural environment throughout the
film. The message is quite a contradiction because of the consumerism that was used in promoting
the film. The illustrations and use of colour provide a very clear picture that is quite sterile and too
manufactured. However, the Truffula trees do not look real which is kind of odd because they are
supposed to be natural. The music was rather annoying, particularly the song How Bad Can I Be. The
only singer in the cast, Taylor Swift does not even get to sing one of the songs. Overall the movie was
passable, (I would not recommened it) and I would rate it 1 out of 5 stars.
