We’ve heard it allbeore. Americansdon’t eat enoughruits and veggies.

While vitamin supplementsoer the intrinsic nutrient comp-

onents o the orgotten side-disho American lie, there’s muchmore to these photosynthesis-

grown gits o nature. Fiber, orone, as well as antioxidants andphytonutrients.

One o Max Muscle ’s newestproducts, Max Green Synergyrepresents an attempt to bridgethe gap between traditionalvitamin supplements and goodold ruits and vegetables. Asa ormulation o greens andruits, phytonutrients andantioxidants, probiotic culturesand digestion-stimulating Aloevera, Green Synergy oersbenets o vegetables in astable, powdered orm.

Plus, according to Dr. Phil Harvey, Max Muscle’s chiescientic ocer and developer o Green Synergy, thestu just tastes great.

“I eel that this is the best-tasting green ormulaavailable,” Harvey says. “There are a number o productson the market, and most o them just don’t taste good.I a product isn’t going to taste good as a standalone, people aren’t going to use it.”

the equivalent o two servings o ruits or vegetablesalongside their muscle-builders. Or it can replace sugar-thick ruit juice when mixed with pure cold water, turninga rereshing drink into a nutritional positive instead o anegative.

skin o many ruits and vegetablesare rich in phytonutrients andpolyphenol antioxidants, which havethe principal benet o scavengingree radicals rom the body as wellas helping to eliminate certainundesirable metals.

Nutritionists point to studiesimplicating ree radicals in a horde

o degenerative diseases, includingcoronary artery disease, cancer, neurodegenerative disease, arthritisand various pulmonary disorders.

Packing that ree radical-ghtingpunch in a health package is thekey. Fruit juice makers have tried, boasting their own phytonutrientsand antioxidants, but ruit juices areoten sweetened with high ructosecorn syrup or, in dietvarieties, articialsweeteners. Green

synergy is sweetenedwith an extract o theChinese lo han guoruit. Reputed at morethan 120 times thesweetness o sugar, with a ruity bloomnative to its origins, theall-natural sweetenerimproves palatability orthe American tongue, with a much lesserimpact on blood sugar

levels than most anynatural sweetener onthe market.

“Taste was the mostimportant thing. That, and ocusing on keepingthe product all-natural,”Harvey says.

From concept to ormulationto ne tuning the favor entaileda three-month process o trialand error, Harvey says. Some othe undamental other inclusions,

however, were designed into GreenSynergy rom the beginning.Greener than GreenMother nature gives gits, but doesn’tdeliver miracles. By including Aloevera gel derived rom the innerlet o the plant’s feshy stalk, MaxMuscle is attempting to incorporatethe benets o a nutritional additivelittle used in western tradition.

For those more amiliar with Aloevera as a topical agent, it can seeman odd inclusion. But students o

anatomy know it shouldn’t seem

that way.“The skin and the gastrointestinal

tract both represent the same typeo barrier layer,” Harvey says. “That’sthe easiest way to think about it.”

Two parts o the Aloe plant can beused as a nutritional supplement, but they weren’t created equal, saysMarc Joseph, a San Francisco-

area nutritionist who blogs atmarcjosephnutrition.com.

There are two primary parts othe Aloe vera plant. The inner gel istypically used or its nutritional andmedicinal value to aid in digestion, boost immunity and help heal cuts. The outer lea is used primarily as alaxative.

“Kind o like a cough when your

throat gets irritated,” Joseph says. However, he adds, “Long-term useo Aloe vera can lead to dehydrationand/or dependency.”

Aloe vera gel is a dierent story.Joseph points to research that

suggests Aloe vera has anti-infammatory properties that mayhold promise or suerers oinfammatory bowel diseases suchas Crohn’s disease and ulcerativecolitis. Other research suggests aconnection between taking Aloevera gel and lowered blood sugarlevels in diabetics.

Aloe vera gel has also beencredited with enhancing the body’suptake o Vitamins C and B-12.

“Vitamin B12 especially is a very

poorly absorbed vitamin,” Harvey

says. “Aloe vera helps in thatprocess. There’s something goingon there.”Essentials for Everyone  Another benet o the product is itcontains both soluable and insoluableber, very important or digestion, support o a healthy GI tract and ortoxin and waste elimination.

Those opting or a vegetarian orvegan diet or health, spiritual orconscience reasons will also bepleased with the ormulation o GreenSynergy. Designed to be 100 percentvegetarian- and vegan-riendly, thepowder contains nothing they wouldnd o limits.

In act, the addition o probioticcultures – ound most readily

available in yogurt – givesthem an added gastricboost. Probiotic cultures

support the fourishingo helpul bacteria in thegastrointestinal tract. Inaddition to being essentialor health digestion, some evidence points totheir competing or spacewith harmul bacteria, but not everyone canexperience the benetsrom traditional sources.

“When you’re a veg-etarian, it isn’t always

easy to get everythingyou need,” says MonicaContreras, a nutritionistand ranchisee o aMax Muscle store inPasadena, Cali. “Thismakes it easier.”

Those with lactose-intolerance,and thereore biologically unable toeat yogurt, are also on the receivingend o the probiotic benet, andContreras invariably points themtoward Green Synergy.

In combination with the otherbenecial actors included in theblend, the probiotic element is merelythe cherry on top o Green Synergy.  Although new on the shelves oMax Muscle, Harvey is predicting asuccess.

He’s also waiting to hear some othe better recipes users devise orthe product.

“I’m kind o waiting or sometestimonies o their avorite mix,”Harvey says. “I think people are going

to be creative with it.” MS&F

[ [Green Synergy (GS) tastes

great as a standalone product. But if you want to get creative, here are Dr. Phil Harvey’s three
