“As a hub for trade, the Middle East & UAE’sAviation Logistics sector plays a vital role in theeconomy. Integrating the regions Logistics &aviation sector, with sustainable developmentbest practices is imperative to drive furtherefficiencies and will generate stronger demandfor the Logistcs Sector.” Road congestion, urbanmobility, local air pollution and the need for CO2reductions and energy conservation will have adramatic impact on the future supply chain of allindustries. Companies will be forced to reducethe impact on the environment of their supplychains and will have to develop sustainablesupply chain strategies in the coming monthsand years.

Realising environmental objectives can be donein synergy with other strategic and financialgoals. A green logistics or Green Aviation policy

often reduces logistics costs as it focuses onreducing energy use and on improving the totalsupply chain.

Whatever the effect on costs, it is obvious thatenvironmental performance indicators, theadoption of a green logistics policy and effectivegreen supply chains measures will becomeimportant aspects of total supply chainmanagement in the near future. Shippers andretailers as well as transport companies, logistics service providers, airlines, airport andport operators will have to integrateenvironmental values into their decision makingprocesses. A well-informed emission reductionstrategy will have to be developed by companiesto meet future requirements. The Green Aviation Logistics Group Middle East(GALG ME) will be an international collaborative

network of supply chain/ aviation specialistsconsultants with a general or specific expertisein areas where companies or local and nationalgovernments can improve the cost andenvironmental performance of their supplychains and transport infrastructure.

Green Aviation & Logistics Group Middle Eastmember companies, authorities, governmentsand international organisations through theirinteractions, will help develop a green logisticspolicy or sustainable supply chain and to realisean energy- and eco-efficient supply chain andtransport infrastructure.. Within the GreenAviation Logistics Group Middle East , themembers will develop and exchangeenvironmental supply chain information, ...” TheGALG Middle East “ will have access to thelatest knowledge, data, best practices and tools

to investigate, measure, propose, implementand evaluate ambitious but realistic eco-efficientsupply chain projects based on well informeddecision making.

The Green Aviation & Logistics Group MiddleEast members will have regular exchanges that, will cover technical innovations and otherdrivers such as green aviation, green aitports, green technology, distance, speed, supply chainconfiguration, transport modes, transport andwarehouse asset utilisation, packaging, reverselogistics, waste logistics and cultural change. The focus will be on a correct and transparentmeasurement of Energy use, Greenhouse gasemissions and other harmful pollutants and onTransport avoidance, Operational andTechnological strategies to reduce energy useand emissions

Airports go green with new eco-friendly initiatives

Usin g Alternative Power, Refilling Empty Water Bottles, Recycling and Composting, Other green airportpractices include using energy-efficient LCD screens on all computers and monitors, landscaping withnative plants, installing low-flow toilets, and replacing paper towel dispensers with electric hand dryers. With the amount of waste and emissions airports produce as a result of their sheer size, the have a longway to go to truly be called "green", but it's nice to know that many are taking steps to reduce theirenvironmental impact in whatever small ways they can.

The Department of Economic Development (DED) has led the initiative to transform a criticalDnata Cargo site — the FreightGate-5 airport cargo terminal — to develop the first carbonneutral warehouse in the Middle East. This will serve as a template for green warehousingacross Dubai that, according to the estimates made during the study, can save 1.9 milliontonnes of carbon dioxide annually by 2020, equivalent to the current annual carbon footprintof some 60,000 UAE residents. The path-breaking initiative is part of the agreement signed

between the DED and DHL last year to develop logistics innovation initiatives that driveefficiencies within the logistics sector through better policy management. The carbonreduction initiative is one of the key work streams that is part of the longer City Logisticsagreement inked by the two organisations.
