• Direct effects– IT/ICTs are responsible for around 2-3% of global carbon

footprint [Gartner, 2008]

– ICTs and CEs account for 15% of global residential electricity

consumption [IEA, 2009]

• Enabling effects– ICT enabled “smart” solution can save 15% of emissions in 2020

[GeSI,2008]

– “Smart” solution can cut global electricity consumption by 30% in

2030 [IEA, 2009]

High voltage AMI promotion plan

1. MOEA and Tai-Power are in charged of this promotion program

since June 2010.

2. High voltage users are accounted for 58% of the total consumed

power. Tai-Power already started to implement AMI for them, for

easier to gain energy saving benefit.

3. Time schedule:Started from 2009, had come up with system

specifications, installed smart meters for 1200 HV users in 2010,

and then completed all AMI installation for left 23000 HV users

during 2011 to 2012.

4. For HV AMI meter product, except electric power measuring chip

(including software) is not made in Taiwan, others component such

as communication modules、battery、meter information

management system are developed by local companies.

Low voltage AMI promotion plan

1. Domestic smart meter industry status:Current Tai-Power’s low

voltage mechanic meter is manufactured by three local manufacturers.

However, the electric power measuring chip (incl. operation logic) is a

core component of the smart meter; still need to be provided by

foreign companies.

2. Early stage goal is to achieve 50% (6M households) penetration rate.

3. To set national AMI standards, take the advantage of Taiwan’s ICT

industry to develop core components, and speed up AMI industry

development. Through large scale deployment and testing projects to

attract enterprises to put more investment and efforts on system

development and deployment.

Summary

Green IT is a very important topic and will have huge impact in energy

savings. Many complicated technological, industrial, and social issues are

involved, which may need collaborations among academia, industries,

and/or even countries to provide large-scale sustainable solutions.

Great thanks to the organizers to provide this wonderful platform for

officials of Green IT gathering together to exchange opinions, and to share

approaches. A new effective and collaborative way is needed to be

explored to make a large-scale change in a short time.

An open platform to engage user communities/countries as contributors to

innovations.

Standardization interest groups may be one of collaboration initiatives in

Asian green IT forum in the future.
