Green IssueThe City of Fort Lauderdale has launched a campaign to incorporate green living

habits. The sustainability plan’s three-word rhyming moniker, Green YourRoutine, was a big influence for our annual Green Issue. You may have noticed

the conveniently placed bicycle racks (like the one we photographed for the cover)throughout the city.

Here at Society Scene, we know that life is already quite full so we understand thatyou don’t always have time to ride your bicycle to work – or that you live in Browardbut work in Palm. We understand that living a green life – a lifestyle with minimalfootprint on our environment – can sometimes feel like more work than it’s worth.

But, Society Scene – typically devoted to coverage of charity events – sees firsthandhow small efforts can easily add up to huge impacts. Not everyone can donate hundredsof dollars to a nonprofit, but if hundreds of people can attend one event thousands ofdollars can be raised.

I’m a firm believer that charity begins at home – and, like charity, being green andcaring for our environment begins with every one of us. I can’t always ride my bicycleto work or take the train to events in Palm Beach, but I do when I can. And if everyonedoes this when they can, we have the potential to make a big difference for ourgeneration and those to come.

Scene & Be Seen includes coverage from recent events that supported theenvironment – like Guy Harvey with the Sea Turtle Oversight Protection group (STOP)and other locals including Society Scene Publisher Stacy Ostrau planting sea oats on thebeach last weekend during the Tortuga Music Festival.

Our resident movie buff, assistant editor Keisha Hatchett, uses the upcoming releaseof “Avatar” at MODS’ IMAX theater as a metaphor for what’s taking place in our ownplanet on page 12.

The fashionable Joanie Cox-Henry shares some of the latest beauty products andcompanies that are not just reducing their carbon footprint but giving back to theenvironment in ways that consumers can feel good about.

I recently moved into a bigger apartment and had more space than furniture. Increative – and sometimes questionable – circumstances I found myself scanning yardsales and bulk trash nights in the neighborhood. Surprisingly, furnishing my new nestwas easier (and cheaper) than I’d imagined. Photographer Kara Starzyk captured someof my repurposed home décor on page 16.

In addition to our regular calendar of nonprofit events we’ve compiled a page ofupcoming green-minded events and activities to help you celebrate Earth month andEarth Day on April 22.

And because the world works better whenwe work together, pages 26-27 feature localactivists and what they’re doing to make adifference for our community’s footprint.

Closing out the issue, we leave you with 10simple ways to green your own routine.

The truth is, life can be quite hectic andcomplicated at times. So instead of adding tothat, we encourage readers this year to takesmall steps, make them habitual, teach themto younger generations. The goal is that oneday all of these small efforts will eventuallylead to big impacts, intrinsically embeddedin our lives – as natural as the water wedrink and the air we breathe.

EDITOR’S LETTER

On set at the DIY home decor shoot, photographer Kara Starzyk snapped thisof me and my mom, Cynthia England, who was visiting from Texas. It seemsapropos, after all she is who taught me thatrespecting mother Earth is a way of life.

Quality Does Matter

When I think about the term “green,” I think of trees, recycling, the crayon color, polar bears, melting ice caps,Vice President Al Gore and “Avatar”- yes, that James

Cameron film about the blue people that finally dethroned “Titanic”as the highest grossing film of all time.

Indulge me for a moment. Travel into the future, to the year 2154on the planet Pandora, inhabited by the “Na’vi” people. Earth’snatural resources are practically nonexistent and the humans from theResources Development Administration look to this strange worldto mine unobtanium, a valuable mineral. What happens next is theexploration and exploitation of a beautiful terrene filled with colors, creatures, forests and history.

The climax of the film occurs when the “Tree of Souls” is threatenedand the creatures living on the planet fight back against the guns, fireand bulldozers. As a moviegoer, I felt a sense of pride and catharticjoy watching the “Na’vi” save their people and their home.

It made me think of the many things that we can do here on Earth, tosave the polar bears and those cute penguins that look like tiny menin tuxedos. “Avatar” wasn’t about demonizing humans or interspecieslove triangles. I think this film was about preserving an amazing worldthat may seem frightening and pointless to outsiders, but possessesa stunning range of life forms that work together to co-exist. Wecan translate that to our world by working to preserve its beauty andappreciating all of the weird creatures that help this planet run everysecond of every day of every year.

If you haven’t already seen the film, a special edition will be shownApril 18 through May 18 at the Museum of Discovery and Science inFort Lauderdale. For more information, visit www.mods.org. I can hearthe music playing, must be time to wrap it up. Now, where was I?

Society Scene! Yes, this publication has always been about bringingpeople who strive to help others into the spotlight. We love to sharethe good things that are happening and help spread the word on howyou, too, can make a difference. So, let’s focus on the good. And quitefrankly, green is good.

In all three of our locations they are also havingdaily bake sales where all the items are baked by our teams and made fresh daily. Our company goal is tonot only raise awareness but to raise $12,000 to donate.” Names of individuals purchasing the $5 and $10donations will be entered to win raffles of goods or services worth more than $400.

Aveda’s Light The Way Candles cost $12 and 100 percent of the purchase price helps protect clean water, supporting Global Greengrants Fund water-related projects around the world. “As landscape architects we are constantlyfocused on promoting intelligently designedoutdoor spaces.

People are attracted to and use spacesthat are well designed. Thus leadingto healthier living, through comfort andwalkability. Access to public green spaceis a proven amenity that makes citiesmore appealing for the attraction of newbusinesses and new residences whileretaining the younger population.

We are educating people on the powerof design, the importance of not ignoring theoutdoors, and shifting the conversation onhow physical improvements can impact acity, through our monthly open to the publicexhibits during FATVillage’s ArtWalk in theFlagler Village neighborhood.”

“Propane autogas is an economical, clean-burning, domestically produced fuel that is beneficial to ourschools and our community.

We have ordered 98 Blue Bird school buses equipped with the ROUSH CleanTech propane autogasfuel system for the Broward County Public Schools. We expect a six-month return on investment for theadditional cost of the alternative fuel buses — and then substantial savings in operational costs over thelifetime of the buses.

Each bus will displace about 40,000 gallons of smog-producing diesel and emit 150,000 fewerpounds of carbon dioxide over their lifetime. They’ll be in operation for the 2014/15 school year.”

“Waste, trash, overuse, misuse, brown desert, blooming desert, wet andcold Colorado River, dry washes, trucks, trains, and more trucks, windfarms and solar arrays.

A woman fighting to save the pristine desert eco-system, a manplanting acres of mesquite trees to produce nutritious mesquite flour inthe middle of nowhere; a small jojoba production company fighting a bigpower company that wants its land.

Grassroots actions taken by heroes fighting to make a differencein our world. It’s amazing what you see when you’re on a 3,000-milewalk!”

“One important issue in South Florida is reducing food waste – we throw away tremendousamounts of food at home and at institutions like schools, grocery stores, and restaurants.

Approximately 25-50 percent of the food we grow gets thrown away. This has terribleconsequences beyond the obvious waste of resources that could feed hungry children andadults. For example, because almost half of climate changing greenhouse gases are producedby agriculture worldwide, perhaps one-fourth of such gases are generated producing food thatis not used.

Our local Slow Food Glades to Coast group is joining other Slow Food groups aroundthe world in encouraging the public to reduce Food Waste in a variety of ways. One way tobring attention to this problem is by hosting a ‘Disco Soup’ event, where volunteers take foodthat might be thrown away due to imperfections in appearance (not taste) and prepare it for adelicious soup while dancing to a disco beat!”

Scott Lewisincoming leader for Slow Food Glades to Coast

‘Disco Soup’ event that took place in January as part of Growing Green

Communities conference.

“Support the local farmers. It is important to know what we are consuming as well

as becoming less dependent on mass produced foods. There have been farmers markets popping up as well as

farm-to-table restaurants that I have been supporting andvisiting as much as possible.”

Derek Shamboraco-owner of Eco Simplista(www.ecosimplista.com)

“Urban gardening demonstration center creation atI Love Yoga Studio by onsite permaculture designcourses.

If our homes, cities and gardens do notfeed us then we end up taking resources andproducing waste in other natural systems. Ifmore people are sustainable and cities are self-sufficient there will be more landmass available forwilderness and conservation.

By applying permaculture design to evensmall urban corners we can create abundance, diversity, stability and fertility for a resilient future.Permaculture design offers generations to comeoptions and alternatives to confront climatechange with a toolkit of positive solutions.”

Angie Gonzalezpermaculture program facilitator and founder of Permaculture Yogi

“Urban farms and community gardens. They increase access to fresh and

nutritious local food, improve qualityof life and social connectedness withinthe community, provide educationalopportunities, and encourage developingwith the environment, not against it.

We created Flagler VillageCommunity Garden, where you cannot only lease a plot to grow your ownvegetable, herbs, or flowers, but comefor free educational workshops on topicsof sustainability and connect with thecommunity in a modern green space. The garden’s mission is founded on theidea of permaculture, which has three

components: take care of the planet; take care of the people; and share the surplus. The garden will be anaccessible example of how urban development can not only integrate with nature but also enable both peopleand other native species of plants and animals to flourish.”

10 ways to GREEN your routine

By Meredith Clements

Green is possible. Green begins with you.

I recently took the Tri-Railup to Lake Worth to visit thePalm Beach Cultural Counciland I had a blast watchingthe sunrise, listening to myheadphones and writing in myjournal. It was a peaceful andproductive way to start my day.

Choo choo choose the greener route.12

Get dirty.

Wear them out(your clothes, not the planet).

This open, scoopedback fashion-forward

tee is made 100 percentfrom recycled waterbottles and a portion

of proceeds benefit theenvironment. Miami-

based boutique My FoxHouse carries the line

by ConSURFvation.$58; www.myfoxhouse.

com.

Check out www.fashionproject.com whereyou can donate clothes to be resold online.

First you select which charity you’d liketo benefit (obviously I’m partial to the

environmental causes), then they’ll send adonation bag that you fill – they cover the

shipping – after your donated items aresold on the site 55 percent of the proceedswill benefit the charity you selected and for

every five pieces sold you’ll receive a $40Nordstrom gift card. Everyone wins!

Chemicals poison our bodies and our planet when consumed. Some ofmy favorite substitutes are:Hydrogen peroxide to whiten teeth and laundry – instead of bleach.Essential oils (like lavender or peppermint) can be used to makecleaning supplies. And to freshen a room put a drop of eucalyptus oilon a lamp – I do this at the office and it smells like a spa.

I’ve always loved this Greek proverb:“A society grows great when men

plant trees whose shade they knowthey will never sit in.”

When native plants are establishedthey’ll use far less water and require

less upkeep.

Plant a garden. I repurposed oldpallets on my patio to make a smallgarden of tomatoes, kale, arugula

and carrots. We’re headed intosummer so vegetables won’t fair

too well, but food forests of tropicalplants (such as banana, papaya, mango, avocado or star fruit) are

generally low maintenance and canthrive year-round in South Florida.

Smell ya later.

Health. It’s what’s for dinner. When we buy locally-sourced foodswe not only support residents in our

own community, but we reduce greenhouseemissions produced from having to ship anapple from Washington, refrigerate eggplantsfrom Canada or package tomatoes fromMexico. Check out www.localfoodsouthflorida.org for a comprehensive list of local suppliers, markets and events in your area. Or visitwww.thegreenpick.com, a Broward Countyorganic delivery service.

Rule the Road (on a bicycle).Broward B-Cycle gives users(both local or tourists) access toa collection of more than 275bicycles year-round (courteousof South Florida’s awesomeweather). I recently signed upand was pleasantly surprised byan additional perk: A handful ofmore than 20 bicycle-friendlyestablishments provide memberswith perks – like 10% off atT-Mex Cantina, a free round ofpool at Blondies’ or $10 off abiodegradable oil change at Eco-Friendly Auto Center.

Don’t just recyclebe a smart recycler.

Visit your city’s Web site for specific guidelines for recycling to make sure you’re being a proactive recycler. Some highlights: take the contents out of a bag and taking the lids off containers (most don’t accept plasticbags or lids); completely empty containers and lightly rinse. I printed off the “quick reference guide” fromwww.fortlauderdale.gov/recycle so my neighbors and I know what can be recycled.

Paper or plastic?Neither.Bag it up!

What’s your shoe size?

Curious what kind of footprint you’recarrying around? Check yourself outat: www.myfootprint.org.

6

Like the 5-second rule foreating dropped food, I try

to live by this rule: Just sayNO if you know somethingwill be thrown away within15 minutes. This goes forwater bottles, disposablerazors, receipts, grocerybags or plastic ware. I’malways surprised by theamount of waste we cankeep out of the landfills.

15-minuterule.

8I know you go through loads

of plastic baggies. I knowthis because I used to, too.I still have a whole cabinet

full of them. But, when I’m atthe store I now use reusable

bags (I keep them in my trunkso I never forget them). Or,

find ways to ensure bags getmultiple uses (like picking upafter your animals or bringing

lunch in them).
